Well my daughters head was 20 inches around and this was a great fit, is there any way you could see what size their head is, if not, I really think this should work for them

Now I'd like to make matching one for my granddaughters to match their mothers, but 43 rows for the bands make them wider than their adult mothers. Are you sure this is right? I believe you said you did one 44 rows or your 4.5 year old. My granddaughter is also 4.5, but this one looks too big around for her. HELP!
+did you use a h hook, did you do chain 8 to start. My daughters head is 20 inches around and it fit nicely with h hook, the adult was done with I hook. Joshua Faircloth
I dont have a pattern for a doll, but I would do the amount of chains it takes to make it around an 18 inches and then do one less row or change the hook size one size smaller too.
ease of the hook to stitch transition also depends on the type of yarn! I hate using red heart simply bc its a really cheap yarn and it stiff! I love to use I love this yarn (hobby lobby) as its inexpensive but not scratchy and is a softer yarn!
I tried this pattern, and I did the brim by chaining 8 and then 6 hdc like your pattern states, and then 44 rows, but when I sc around I got more than 60 sc. I came right out correct on the adult hat so I am not sure why I cannot get 60 sc on the child size?
can you do an extra rnd to make the hole smaller if you want after the rnd 10 like ch3 the dc in the next Dc then decrease 2 together and so on then to the last rnd of sc

I love the hat but it's like you are struggling with the crochet hook. Have you tried the Boye hooks?

+when you get close to the end then I'd do 2sctog decreases on the last few or more so you can get 60 Kayla Nelson
