  • The government of the Australian state of Victoria put out an ad aimed at promoting trans acceptance. Unfortunately, it’s essentially telling women to prioritize the feelings of trans people over even their own physical safety. Let’s talk about it.

    Telling a woman to ignore her gut instinct is a dangerous message.

    • @Artryom
      @Artryom 6 дней назад +3

      Not in support of this ad in the slightest but not necessarily in support of that message of yours either. Imagine a lady has a knife on her person, riding the elevator with a stranger, perhaps a shy or quiet young man on his way out of his home to a job interview. He’s as peaceful as her yet oddly something in her “Gut instincts” is telling her to strike first, fight or flight are often gut reactions often in tandem with gut instincts, something about him is perhaps making her “Feel” unsafe but her gut reaction is almost always to strike first, fight first, rather than someone else’s flight first. In this it is fight. Telling anybody to always listen and sometimes not ignore their gut instincts and reactions is an equally dangerous message. How to reconcile this?

      All you have to do to figure this out is think. Women go through the world more cautiously than men for a reason. First, is our physical safety. Men are bigger, stronger, and have way more testosterone pumping through their bodies. Women are so much more likely to be physically violated that I doubt if there’s even a statistic for it. The other reason is the way we’re made by nature to be hyper vigilant for every kind of threat around us, because we’re the ones who will spend way more time protecting babies and children. Normal women are always on the lookout for any potential threat to themselves and their children. We look out for other people’s children, too. Sorry if you’re little feelings are hurt by us doing what we’re made to do.

    We used to have this thing called “stranger danger.” The premise was “if someone feels strange, they probably are. And it’s safer to leave their presence than stay in it and face possible danger.” - we used to teach kids to trust their gut and follow their instincts - now we tell women that they have to stay in uncomfortable situations in close quarters or they are bigots - and if their instincts tell them to flee, that’s violence towards the person they are fleeing 😑

      Exactly! I'm not Australian, but I am a SA survivor too and screw someone else's feelings when it comes to the safety of myself, other women and children. If I see a man in the women toilets or locker rooms, I'll scream. I don't care what anyone says. Pronouns or self ID'ing be damned, you still have the physique of a man! You shouldn't be in there! I don't get why there are even women that accept this! We constantly have to be on guard as women, especially around men we don't personally know. (sometimes even around men we think we know) I'm not saying that all men have bad intentions, but we have no way of knowing which man does or doesn't. That makes it so dangerous. And there are plenty of predatory men using this self ID'ing stuff to their advantage. We have to keep fighting this. I fear that one day, the governments are going to force us to accept this, but we can't jeopardize the safety of women and children, no matter what.

I remember being 9 or 10 years old when adult males started becoming inappropriate with me. During my preteen/teen years, I had men leer at me, stick their tongues out at me, grope me, rub up against me, try to hug or kiss me, say sexually inappropriate comments, try to give me rides. It happened all the time. I know most trans women aren't out to harm children or females, but we don't know who's doing it to get into women's spaces. As a man, I would feel very unsafe stepping into an elevator with another huge man pretending to be a woman. Why? Because he's not just a man in an elevator, he's chosen to be a caricature of a woman, which is extremely unusual - 100% of people I've ridden with in an elevator in my 65 years have been exactly what I have expected them to be: men dressed and acting like men, women dressed and acting like women. This scenario as described in the clip would by so bizarre according to my lived reality, I would feel incredibly uneasy. Why? Because I can't predict whether that is a passive pretence by a psychologically confused individual who thinks he's a woman, or a potentially aggressive pretence by a psychologically disturbed individual playing a sinister role. Most likely it's the former, but I can understand why isolated women, in a lift who deal with male aggression in many forms, would be uneasy or frightened.

There was enough space in the elevator, why didn't he gave her more space? It's a common behaviour in an elevator situation to try not to stand too close together, unless you have to because it's full. That sort of behavior make me angry, it's threatening, rude and disrespectful. Like the manspreading next to a woman in the public transportation. So the woman had to make space to get comfortable again.

    Australia showed its true colours during covid. This doesn’t surprise me, but it’s still deeply unnerving. A woman’s greatest asset to her safety is her intuition. It is vital to be able to listen to that little voice telling you to get out of the lift, to decline the man offering to help with your groceries, to ignore that man asking for directions, etc. Most of the time, after women have been assaulted, they report that they “had a feeling” but ignored it because they wanted to be polite. Ignoring those feelings gets women killed. And there has recently been a murder spree against women in Australia. Never let anyone tell you to ignore that little voice. It could save your life.

People who have dogs typically dont have problems with being with dogs, it's those who dont spend time with dogs who mostly dont like it. We all work with people literally everyday though. Some might truly choose to believe that women have an "easier life" than do men, and want to ride that perceived social gravy train they believe women get.

MANY times, no one offers a seat. Why is a trans woman mode deserving of a seat than a pregnant woman or a woman carrying a baby?

      @filmjustice4172 Oh, I agree 100%. I just thought it was ironic how the world seems to react to both of these ideas with such contradiction. And realistically yeah most trans women are safe too I think it's more the idea that if your alone with another person (literally anyone) and you feel unsafe then removing yourself from the situation doesn't make you a bigot it makes you reasonably cautious. Just funny how in one breath society says most men are dangerous, and then in the next, they say well, but if they wear makeup and a dress, then they're automatically safe.

    I work at a hospital, in pharmacy. On some floors, when I deliver meds to the med rooms, I have to pass by a nurse's station. Most of the time, it would save me a few steps to walk behind the nurse's station. If there are only female nurse's present, I walk around it, because it is THEIR safe space. I will only ever walk behind it if there is a male nurse present, or if I am accompanied by a female from pharmacy. It's ingrained in my conscious and subconscious mind. I don't feel like I'm particularly threatening, but I feel like a little effort on my part goes a long way toward trust.
