As a 4’11 female I’ll never be a VS model but that doesn’t mean I won’t cheer them on from the sidelines! Why can we not just celebrate the fact that we are all different and have different abilities and skills. Instead of this ‘what about me’ jealousy that seems to be trendy at the moment 🤦🏻‍♀️ it doesn’t come off well, not everything is meant for everyone and that is ok!

I see a lot of beautiful ladies on here talking about how short they are, so I want to share my story. I hit my full height of 5'10 at 12 years old. I was super skinny as well. I spent the next 6 years of middle and highchool being bullied to no end. I was called names like "Viking, Stork, Giant, String Bean, and Amazon Girl." I was lanky and flat chested. Then, when I was around 17, I was told I could be a model several times. My self-esteem was ruined, and I couldn't bear the thought of parading in front of people. I am now almost 40 and still have self-esteem issues. Even those who fit the mold of your typical model are bullied to no end. Just be kind to everyone no matter what.

As a fat woman, I have absolutely no problem with the old Victoria’s Secret.
I loved watching the yearly shows.
They are the Victoria’s Secret angels.
They are not meant to be “attainable“
they are meant to be heavenly bodies beautiful women showing off gorgeous lingerie, wearing angel wingswith fabulous music playing and great special effects or whatever.
The whole aesthetic is what attracts everybody.
If you feel like you’re just looking at a Walmart
runway show wearing Her Way underwear, with some crap pop music playing
it loses ALL of the appeal .
Depending on your bra size, you can get your own Victoria’s Secret bra and panty set. If you don’t feel sexy in that lingerie set, that’s on you. That has nothing to do with the women on the stage for less than an hour.

My brother wouldn't have learned to walk or talk without me pushing him and I regret that. Me pushing him is now labeled abuse and he knows this. He's a terror and is well aware of the line "He didn't know any better he's disabled." He uses to hurt, manipulate and control people. He was allowed to abuse my mother and I almost went to jail for defending her because he's disabled for one of many examples. I hate him and I'm the bad guy because he's worshipped for his disability as many are. This showed me how things go when the norm becomes babying and showed me what privelage looks like.
Humans need push every now and again some more than others. This babying creates spoiled people who will do the worst.
I am very happy your doing so well and I do hope you got a support system though. Keep up the hard work.

I met a woman in her mid 30's, she was probably 20 pounds overweight compared to healthy weight, and I want to say 5'2". She didn't want to work because she felt like she was entitled (key word there, we hear it a lot from Millennials and Gen Z) to being a professional ballerina who tours the world.
I pointed out that millions of girls around the world start training at a very early age, sometimes as early as even age 3. That they train for years, starve themselves, and even then, only a tiny fraction of them end up BARELY making a subsistence level of income as a ballerina, working themselves into chronic pain and suffering, and their career only lasts a handful of years.
Her response was "you Republicans are ruining the world and need to go." My surprised face (I'm not registered with either of the two parties, I have major issues with both, the parties mind you, not their voters, I get along with most voters).

Has this woman ever danced before in her life? I feel like after a couple dance practices, she wouldn't want to be a ballerina anymore. It is much more demanding than the average office or retail job. She's also ignoring the fact that virtually all ballerinas are retired by her age. Even if hypothetically she had an opportunity to dance with some company (would never happen), does she really think that she would be able to keep doing it into her 40s and 50s? Delusional.

It also becomes dangerous! As a retired paramedic, in the few years before I left, I witnessed trainee paramedics be pushed through their training, regardless of the fact they kept failing all of their assessments, and demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge and skills. Regardless of the fact they were clearly not capable of doing their jobs, they were continuously pushed through until they found ways to ALLOW them to pass. They then go on to work as qualified paramedics, continuously making dangerous mistakes, at times costing people their lives! Seriously, do you really want to put your lives in these peoples hands? I'm sure there are other professions that are dealing with similar issues. It's dangerous, and needs to stop!

Similar thing happened to my sister with ballet. She loved it, was great at it, had all the talents. She far surpassed her peers in skill. She was a natural. However, she chose to quit that dream when she was in her mid teens because she realized it wasn’t realistic. Despite all the hard work she did, she had to face the fact that she’d struggle to get any parts, because she was too tall. She wouldn’t be competing with mediocre girls who did ballet as an activity for parts anymore, she’d be competing with other girls on her level and even above who would be more likely to be picked for being shorter. Tall girls don’t do ballet, because tall girls are heavier to lift and thus more strenuous on the bodies of their male dance partners. When you’re looking for shorter women for partner roles, you’re going to build up a catalog of women in that height range, so even when you’re hiring for non-partner roles, you’re going to still look for dancers who will fit in with the line up. Ballet is a sport of conformity. My sister didn’t conform, so she chose to pursue a radically different career path that would allow her to prioritize being a wife and mom.

The standard of soccer in the UK definitely increased when the rules of only amateur participation were relaxed, as this allowed players from poorer backgrounds to participate and not only rich gentlemen. It's not the company's fault that people forget that the whole point of a VS model is that their beauty is unattainable. This still isn't the way to go, it makes them look laughable as a chubby 17 year old who stands at 5'7, and also it absolutely insults their original models who worked hard to be there. If people cannot adjust to the world around them then that is their problem, they shouldn't be catered to and have the other parties (the original VS models) be left empty-handed when they deserve to have their titles.

It's so annoying how much it hinders naturally speech and communication because people have to tip toe around what they say in order not to offend someone who gets offended by pretty much everything.
Another thing is, this whole thing isn't equal, like less than 25% of people, probably way way less, who just so happen to have the loudest voices, they're in control of the media, most popular websites on the internet, etc, are trying to force everyone to care about their feelings, their insights, but they don't do that for other people. An example is Carol wants to talk about her sunflowers but Brenda is triggered by sunflowers because they remind her of the war in Ukraine, and she expects everyone to know that sunflowers are national flower of Ukraine.
Why shouldn't Carol be allowed to talk about her sunflowers? Don't people consider the fact that shaming her like that might hurt her feelings?
If they want to preach about the caring of feelings then they should back it up.

"representation matters" only if you can't see your own humanity in another person. If you need to see a person your same color or size or gender illness in order to feel associated with them, it's because you don't quite see people who aren't the same as the same kind of human as you as as human as you.

For example if we talk about superheros, let’s just say in the Justice league it’s just Superman, Batman, Flash and Green Lantern. Yes all are great heroes but it’s just one demographic. Do you need to be a white man to only like them and empathize with them? No ofc not but what about someone who isn’t that demographic. Everyone on earth does NOT look the same. Do you want to show that women can’t be heroes? Or different races of people can’t be heroes? No bc anyone can have the opportunity to be a hero and that’s why we have representation.

Neither will my two brothers who are skinnier than me, there are certain height and strength requirements for a reason. Reducing the standards to become a firefighter (which has happened in Canada) can literally put people in danger. The more industries this "inclusivity" permeates things like beauty and fashion the more it becomes an excuse for health, job standards, etc.

    • @dede4004
      @dede4004 9 месяцев назад +13

Exactly. I remember when the school system and the Department of Education STARTED THE...."everyone gets a trophy". The parents and teachers HOTLY contested it, so did we. (My husband is in education) and we KNEW it would end up really bad.
The debate was...(their side) that lowering standrds and making things easier and then giving EVERYONE a trophy regardles, would make ALL the students "feel special" and would include everyone, and no one would FEEL "left out".....and...( The parents , teachers and other side).... was...That giving everyone a trophy would not allow ....the majority of students to learn HOW to struggle and work HARD to get what they WANTED, and deserved if they DID work hard to achieve a high score/level, and would deny those children THEIR opportunity, instead of lowering everything down to the "lowest learners".....and instead of having rewards " handed to them" just because they WANTED something for doing nothing, or doing very LITTLE. (Why not just help the few that were struggling, and keep standrds AS THEY WERE?) This would create a large sub-standard of learning.... SURE ENOUGH, it turned out JUST LIKE WE SAID. And, the " DOE " was WRONG......AGAIN. that group needs to GO. And so now we have a group of adults that arent happy with ANYTHING unless they are the CENTER OF ATTENTION or "getting something they didnt earn, and dont even want to TRY to earn it ". THATS NOT GOOD......because they don't understand the JOY from attaining something from hard work and achievement. The DOE.....ROBBED THEM OF THAT. Their lives are going to be triple hard, and their kids will suffer for their unhappiness, because the "parents happiness will always be MORE important than their childs. It will create a next generation of VERY ANGRY and rebellious children after them, that hate WHAT their angry parents are doing, to see that their paents can't be happy without being "pacified" with something. So, their kids will never feel "good enough" to satisfy their parents need for constant validation and praise.
These adults were CHEATED out of a VERY SPECIAL and NEEDED thing in human's lives. We hear it every single day now......they complain about almost everything as well. Thats sad.....WE TRIED. And we were shouted and beaten down, because not enough folks STOOD UP and FOUGHT TO STOP THIS LUNACY, to let the children WORK to achieve the BEST that they can do, instead of accepting the very minimum work and minimum amounts of effort. THAT doesnt achieve "greatness" in people. It CREATES mediocrity, and creates a selfish attitude of entitlement, but it especially creates ANGER and unhappiness the most.

I worked for Victoria’s Secret for 5 years. And, yes, I accepted the fact that that it was for a specific “type” of clientele. If you were morbidly obese, our bras were NOT for you. We catered to women who were petite to average and were willing to pay a more premium price even if it meant sometimes sacrificing comfort over sexiness and femininity. I liked watching the fashion shows and I liked the era of the older angels who were often more slender than the average woman but usually more voluptuous than some of the couture models.
These new angels look ridiculous to me. Catering to everyone makes any brand lose its appeal. VS was targeted to a specific type of consumer. That type of logic only works for daily necessities that EVERYONE uses, which often falls in line with services rather than goods. I mean- women shopping at VS wouldn’t be the types you’d see going to Lane Bryant. There is nothing wrong with exclusivity so long as you aren’t bringing others down in the process. And in clothing… it doesn’t make sense for any brand to try to cater to ALL shapes and styles; how could you possibly keep up with the inventory without losing money? You’re selling bras and panties here. Not dealing in pharmaceuticals 🗿

Devil's advocate: How do you explain that to someone with a body type issue? Not obese, but they're too short, or male, or a hawkish nose, the wrong skin tone, have a specific type of calf (mentioned by an ex model/ dancer in a women's defense book I read once upon a time)... How do you, not a lawyer but you as a loving person, tell your niece that she's not pretty enough to live her dream because she inherited her grandma's boobs and not the other grandma's?
There are some things you can train and improve for, like sports. Even then injuries happen, lack of sponsorships, everything's a gamble in that perspective. How do you explain and justify that to someone who grew up with stories like Zootopia, or 90s chick flicks, or muffin flipping Xena?
I personally have no issue with roles and jobs existing for body types. The problem is finding the legalese that doesn't discriminate just because of traditional racism or other bigotry and more, "We're looking for a profile that you physically do not fit." This same template can be used by Hollywood for period shows, instead of requiring token colors for a historical Viking or Samurai or Zulu piece.
      Sincerely,
A Hobbit with a disgustingly exaggerated hourglass that couldn't live her dream of cheerleading or firefighting or stunt work due to height, injury and lack of opportunity.

The thing is beauty is a sensitive subject for women. We are more willing to accept that we might not be super athletic or talented at singing or super smart, but when it comes to beauty we all put in the work and try the best we can. We don’t try hard at things we’re not good at; we understand we have different strengths but we do ALL want to be pretty (basic biology). The problem is that beauty is so narrowly defined.
That doesn’t mean we’re jealous and can’t be happy for people but it is ridiculous that they make tens of thousands of dollars for their genetics, promoting sexualization, extremely materialistic values, and sex appeal. This is soft porn we’ve normalized with glam vibes - music, float hair, expensive (tiny) clothes.
Men aren’t insecure if they’re not as skillful as a basketball player bc they’re not playing basketball all the time. We’re not envious of surgeons bc we don’t all want to be that kind of smart. But we do all want to look great (sex drive, hormones, etc). Media pushes unrealistic and invasive beauty standards and we’re expected to not get insecure? Do you really think just as many people would have even considered cosmetic surgery a century ago or thought of the crazy kinds of sex that exist now if our society wasn’t oversaturated by sexual content? A person’s sexual experience should be personal - to be discovered w a special someone. But publicizing sexiness takes away from the specialness of the experience. The mystery is gone, men create ideals Thant women feel like they have to live up to, women no longer have the same power on men in sex bc men have become desensitized by sexual content.
What hard work do these models even do to EARN the kind of money they make? Is their career truly admirable? I thought this was a conservative channel - what good does such a career even contribute to the world? Normalize sexualization and profit massively off of people looking at your body .. that’s a talent?

Models workout daily, have extremely strict diets, get up at 4am to shoot, withstand criticism of their bodies, travel extensively...also like most models are actually slightly quirky in there appearance. I mean the huge editorial models.
Lastly modelling has various niches. A model can do commercial, runway, editorial etc so there is actually room for everyone-just maybe not in the niche everyone wants. There is a diversity of beauty. Mind you different regions, products, brands etc like different looks. That's what models go to castings cos each brand wants something specific. Not booking VS doesn't mean you won't book ASOS or H and M or Levi's Jeans etc.
Also anyone you see in a certain position will always be aspirational. We are meant to have something to aspire to. Even a curvy model like Ashley Graham is to me, an aspirational beauty. That's the premise of selling a product-to suggest if you by x product you will acheive y look or etc. Advertising just wouldn't work otherwise. But also life. I'm a writer and Chimanda's writing and career is extremely aspirational to me. But I know it's unlikely my talent will get me that far doing exactly what she does. Yet the idea at least drives me to be better in my lane.
So it's up to individuals to decide they are happy with how they are or carving their own lane or deciding they are beautiful. And let me tell you...those are often the people who do build a name for themselves. Why? Self love is actually, to some extent aspirational.
At some point and actually in some ways, women who say fuck society's standards have or will become aspirational yet people still struggle with self esteem because the work of not gaf what others think, is something a lot are too lazy to do. I personally dgaf about being attractive.🤣 I want to make money, be super accomplished and just live life.🤷🏿‍♀️I think 'baddies' are gorgeous and I've had and have ridiculously beautiful good friends as are super models but that's just not me.

Now it's come one, come all. There is nothing to aspire to, nothing to sacrifice, nothing to separate the people who are willing to give it their all from those who are just whining and pitying themselves and don't want to put in any work...they think they should be allowed to be part of some group just because they want to. Sometimes I think those same groups react too negatively to inclusivity but at the same time I can't blame them for being mad when they're told all the hard work they had to put it to rise above the rest has now been deemed unnecessary.

I'm very small for my age so most clothes that other people around me wear don't look that great on me, but that's okay because I opt for comfort over appearance, and I like how clothes look on other people more vs myself. When I see an outfit I always imagine how cool it'd look on someone else, I rarely think of how it'll look on me.

At the time I was reading it I remember thinking, “This is crazy. The person who wrote this has some wild ideas.” However, I am now starting to see that maybe this is how society may end up, everyone being forced to be equal, whether they like it or not.

We are talking about selling underwear to people of all sizes, what are larger people supposed to wear? They are selling clothing, not body types. If you only make clothes that go up to a size 6 you are going to go broke in this world. If you want different demographics to buy your crap you have to go out there and dance for them to pick you over everyone else. Say what you will, Victorias' secret was going down, the shows ratings were slipping and sales were dropping, the attention was going to brands like Kim Kardashian's skims, (who now has quite a few ex victorias secret models on her roster along with a list talent) and Rihanna's Savage line who lingerie was the talk of the town and selling out... So yes, diversity does sell if its done right.

Not having accountability or goals keeps them stagnant and creating excuses of why they are right and why they should be included is just a coping mechanism. People don’t want to work for anything anymore. And it’s also sad that these people have to be included to validate their identity instead of working hard and validating themselves 🤦‍♀️
