Thank you for your comments and suggestions ;) #1 not true...WB is critical even when shooting raw as is it effects not only color, but also exposure. Exceptionally informative video. Thank you for the great set up guide. Set mine exactly the same way and shot some fantastic motorcycle racing shots. The tracking hardly misses anything using your settings, even the riders eyes when it could see through the visor. 👍
Thank you ... very informative.... oh and thank Jase for doing the hard work... without him on his bike or running we wouldn't know just how good the tracking is on the A7c.... Regards... Yoki..
... and yes we can. Go to Menu/Camera icon 2/Custom Key/select the camera button (3/3) then select Tracking On. So far testing is exactly what I hoped for, no need to touch the back of the camera to initiate, just press the camera button and tracking locks on.
Jason, great video. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been shooting my off-roading videos with a Canon M50 for a while and then I started taking photos at my sons soccer game and have been enjoying that as well! I’m looking at a used A7iii or A7C. I think the A7C would be better than the A7iii for my off-roading videos, but do you think it will hang in there for sports? Mind you, I’m no pro 😂
Hey there, yeah the A7C can certainly do sports with the downside being the smaller lower quality EVF I would say and ergonomics are not quite as good. With that comes the smaller form factor though which is great for size/ weight sort of thing. The Auto focus is very similar to the A7 III, being slightly better I would say on the A7C based on my experience.
@@Jason_Hermann thanks Jason! I appreciate it! I’m sure the EVF is probably better than my M50. That is great that the AF is good. The M50 doesn’t refocus between shots in the high speed burst mode. I don’t need an A9 or an insane sports body as I’m not a pro but it sounds like the A7C is right for me. I appreciate your help! - Geoff
I recently got the 70-200m lens so I decided it would be a great video for those interested. The A7C is a highly capable compact full frame mirrorless camera, but the newer A7 IV is stealing the show these days ;) All the best, Jay
Hi, nice video... I recently sold my gen1 70-200f4 lens for the newer updated one. Was out shooting a hockey game and couldn't get the thing to lock on and stay as the original lens did. Curious if you know if we can select one of the custom buttons on the lens to trigger focus lock like we can by touching the back of the screen? Will try and see, but I also sent back the lens and will see if it was a bad one or user error... cheers.
Jason - This is great, thanks for posting. A bunch of us have tried to figure out how to use PocketWizard triggers with A7Cs as a 2nd or 3rd remote. For some reason, Sony decided not to use their multi-USB although they use it on less expensive cameras (e.g. ZV-1). Any chance you've ever tried to figure out how to use a remote trigger?
Hi Jay. Thanks for another great video. I wonder if by chance you had an opportunity to use the Tamaron 35-150 f2-2.8 lens and specifically mounted on the A7C? I’m wondering if that could be good enough to be a “do almost everything” kind of lens? Of course, maybe also have an ultra wide angle 17-28 or 16-35 to cover that range. I know it’s an expensive lens and very heavy… but it might also mean not having to carry two lens (28-75 and 70-180).
I have not had a chance to use that beast yet ZT Sizzle ;) Yes, it can do most everything in that range and it's awesome from what I have seen, but not very practical for everyday use in my opinion. Especially if you want small and compact for the A7C like myself. You would have one lens less in the bag thought to your point...
Thanks Jay, I am totally going to set my a7c up just as you suggest and then try it out with my 70-200f4. What a time saver! Btw, do you think that you could get decent results with the Tamron 28-200 with the same set up? Obviously the aperture setting would be different. Your little boy is not so little anymore but still has the same cheeky grin! Such a good model for you!
Hello there, yes you can get great results with the Tamron 28-200mm, but the AF is not as good in that lens as fe 70-200mm, so the hit rate might not be as good tracking moving subjects wise. It will still do a good job though, don't get me wrong. I would not expect a 10 out of 10 hit rate is all ;) My son Jase is getting big! I am very fortunate to have two wonderful kids that don't mind helping daddy out with his camera games :) All the best, Jay
I've been trying to find the right settings for plane spotting at the airport. Typically these planes are moving, so I'm going to give these settings a try. Only difference for me is the Sony 200-600mm lens. Let me know if you have any additional recommendations for that. But it sounds like this may work just fine. I'll try it with a tripod and hand-shooting just to see.
For recording video I don't use this lens very much, but if I were to record sports I like in this video, I would use this lens yes. I usually use wider angle prime lenses when I record in front of the camera, but a lens like this is great for outdoor sports, close wildlife type stuff, portraits framed views and things like that would also be great with this lens recording video.
Well, not all... ;) The camera settings make a bid difference in achieving accurate focus. On sensor phase detection AF is a game changer and tells the lens when and where to focus... IQ is mostly the lens to your point, but the killer sensor also helps :) All the best and thanks for the comments! Jay
Jay, this is a great video. You are using the 7c with the old menu system. I assume this would be the settings for the a6600 which has the old menu. Can you redo this with the 7 IV menus.
Which lens do you recommend for dog photography on my A7C? I tried the Tamron 28 200mm but it was not as sharp as the 18 135mm I had on my A6100. I'm looking for the Sony 70-200F4 or the Tamron 70-180F2.8 Also the Sony 70-300 is on my list. Maybe you have some tips? Thanks for the great explanation and tips 👌👍
For dog photography I would recommend something with the fastest AF motors, in this case being the Sony FE 70-200m f/4 G OSS Lens. The Tamron 70-180mm is also a great option, but I don't think the lens AF motors are as accurate shot after shot. I could be wrong, but that was the feeling I got after using the Tamron over the Sony which I now own.
Excellent vid...I use my camera predominately with the same lens and body for surveillance photography. Do you think I can apply this set-up for a burst of the video while shooting movement?
@@gearhigher2027 No you can't shoot video at the same time and take photos... You can screen grab shots off the video footage though if you want, see here: ruclips.net/video/HCp0ixyS1eE/видео.html
The A7C is newer and offers better autofocus performance, but the Viewfinder is much smaller compared to the A7III. If you love viewfinders, then you want the A7III. Otherwise I would go with the A7C or newer A7 IV.
Thanks a lot for advice, I was trying it out today but I'm despite the fixing shutter speed at 1/1000 in the ISO MIN setting, it keeps dropping to 1/500 or 1/320 etc, obviously making the results not great. Am I missing something? Do I need to go manual to make sure it doesn't move?
@Jason_Hermann - I recently upgraded to an A7V, and I wanted to know if there’s a way to lock focus tracking (like you did with your son) WITHOUT using the touch screen? I had an A7iii and it was easy to program the center button to do that, but it seems they’ve done away with that on the A7V.
Yes if you use expandable tracking as your focus area and AF-C then aim at your subject it will start tracking in as soon as the focus locks on using the shutter half press or AF-On button if you have one programed. That is how am shooting now and I am planning on making a new video about that soon using my A7C II and A6700, but I waiting for a Ninja recorder to arrive, so I can record the camera screen with much better quality.
@@Jason_Hermann - thanks for the reply, I can do that if I have to but I was hoping there was a way to just hit a button to track, similar to what you do on the touch screen. My old A7iii had a function called Center Lock Auto Focus, so I could program a button to do what I want, but that function is nowhere to be found on the A7V. You just click the button to toggle on and off, no need to hold the button down.
If you go into Setup - "Photo" Custom Key/ Dial Set then navigate to the Rear 2 AF On button by default. Change that to Tracking ON + AF On.... That will then enable tracking by just pushing that one button with no screen. It also works with the shutter button for me after enabling it there for the AF-On button. I believe they are tied together in that way.
Anti-fliker is for when you are having issues with lighting that is conflicting with the cameras shutter speed, so I only use that in those situations... Setting ISO to Auto can work if you are using the auto minimum shutter speed option I showed you in this video at the 3:35 time... You can also hard sett he ISO, but it's nice to use as low as possible as long as you have a fast enough shutter speed.
I have heard about that, but don't know anybody personally that that happened to and I think it is very rare overall. I never had an issue with my A7C, but if you are planning on using this in a pro environment, meaning talking thousands of shots per week for example, I would consider getting the A7 IV which has a way more heavy duty shutter mechanism that can take a lot more lifecycles....
