If you're trying to find a lens that works for almost all scenarios, it's very difficult....but the 24-70 probably where you want to start. However, the 24-70 is not very compact. If you're just getting started in photography, the kit lens may be a good option. It has a decent focal length range and it doesn't break the bank. It will help you learn the camera and which focal lengths you like best so you can make a more informed decision when you decide to step up to more expensive lens. Hope that helps!
For some reason I can't reply to your other comment directly. A kit lens is the lens that you can purchase with the camera body as a bundle. Good bang for your buck if you are just getting started and don't really know which focal lengths you like yet.

Just ordered the A7C so this list is great! By the way what lens do you use with your A7C and do you use any UV filters to protect your lens from dust and accidental scratches when your not using a ND filter?
Awesome! It’s a great camera. Check out the video on the cage because I recommend that over the L-bracket now! I have a bunch of lenses, but I’d say that my main are 20mm 1.8 G, 16-35 2.8 GM, 85mm 1.8 G, and the 70-200 G. I don’t use UV filters because I can’t stand the idea of putting a sub-par piece of glass in front of a beautiful lens unless I have to. The only times I use UV filters is when the conditions are really bad...like windy days at the beach, or dirt getting kicked up from bikes, cars, etc. Hope that helps!
This is going to sound bad...but I always just use the UV filters that BH give me for free when buying lenses. Lol. Maybe that’s why I don’t use them often 🤷🏻♂️ haha
@@MattYamamoto100 Hey for just keeping dust out, I'm sure that works just fine haha. Looking forward to more content you drop related to the A7C. Can't wait to play with it soon!
You could try some ETTR if shooting on really bright days if you don’t want a VND...but I highly suggest getting one. It not only helps for photos on bright days...but will also allow you to get some cool effects with water and keep your shutter speed when shooting video. I had trouble on a super bright Southern California day at about 2pm. A 6-9 stop VND would have made life a lot easier. 😊
Great video as always, enjoy the presentation and content. I’m a longtime Leica user and also anything small, non obstructive that I can come up with (my first was a (screw-mount). Recently have gotten into the A7c from the A7r IV thanks to your videos. Will be following and looking forward to new content. Thanks
Hi Matt, I just bought an a7c. I charged it up and made sure to give it a full charge before using it. Now I m here changing the settings and stuff but I notice that my camera gets warm. Does your camera have this effect to? I'm just a bit concerned.
Great video man! Bought an a7c for vlogging over on my theme park channel and I am loving it so much. I picked up a cheap $40 variable ND filter that is.... um OK i guess. I didnt wanna spend big money cause I wasn't sure how i'd like using one. I'm finding that I love the look of vlogging at f/2.8 and since i wanna follow the shutter rule, a ND filter is a must. Since I mostly vlog on bright days at theme parks - which variable ND should I get as far as stops goes? I'm leaning towards the 6-9 stops like the one you have.
I highly recommend trying the peak design leash strap with the A7c. I used the slide lite previously but because of the stiffness of the material where it doubles over at the locks I found that while using the camera I just didn’t care for the strap. The leash solved that problem 100% and it’s plenty comfortable enough for a lighter setup like the A7c and Tamron 17-28.
@@MattYamamoto100 appreciate all your vids, I sent the A7III back in my return window and got the A7C thanks to your review and I’m so glad I did. Also got the RavPower charger in today. I had no clue it was coming with two batteries as well. The charger alone was worth $50. I’m not typically one to use 3rd party batteries but until I pick up another Sony, if I find myself in a pinch I will try them out.
Personnaly i don’t like peak design. The connector are floating around and it is as annoying than the dring terribly noisy that i have completely remove. Instead i bought the smallrig 3212 to give me better grip and the strap hook. I simply need to find some kind of carabiner hook with rubber that i can attach to the strap and attach /detach to the smallrig cage which has arca swiss plate. That way i can shoot handheld and put it on the gimbal and attach easily the strap without any peak design floating connector. Also i read a person online where the peak design connector broke…it is thin and the plastic around could break. It happened. Also some guy had issues with the strap altering their clothes. I prefer the strong sony strap and smallrig cage strap hook with carabiner hook. For this reason a guy attach two peak design connector at each side to have backup. I don’t trust such system. You have to check the connector regularly if you don’t want to have a bad surprise. It is my opinion. All of the strap have broken with a person at one time…

Smallrig makes straps just as good as peak design. I have them. A wrist strap and neck strap, i can switch between them in seconds. Ohh and i have an a7c 📸 , great camera.
Be careful with the hand strap that have no security stop. I read few people that the strap detach on a particular move. I prefer the sony strap with the smallrig 3212 cage. I just need to find a good carabiner hooks ribberized so i can detach /attach the hook to the cage strap holes super fast. Currently i never remove the strap as i use it in photo and video to stabilize. But if i had a gimbal the carabiner hook would be perfect to remove the strap and keeping the strap strong.
Nice video. I’ve been using $20 Fotga VNDs for years, and they’re awesome Provided you know not to max them out (yes, noobs can’t do that on PM VNDs), you’ll find they’re excellent. No wacky colour casts. Get one for every lens, and don’t fiddle around with that gigantor stepup. That eyecup is great. The cage kinda blows the idea of a small, light camera for me. It’s also a shame covering up that camera. I use a low profile arca swiss plate that is completely flat underneath with a retractable thumbscrew. It sits solid and comes off quick (I don’t take it off though).
Thanks for the great input! Yeah, I still have some cheaper VNDs...and I'm used to them..but in my early days, I have been guilty of turning them too far. lol. I love how the PMVNDs are kind of fool proof for beginners. Buy once, cry once I suppose. haha

Would you be interested if I did a full video about the L-bracket to show how you can use the screen with it mounted?
Thanks for watching! :)
Also, another reason I prefer the L-bracket for photography is that it has the built-in arca mount for portrait orientation...which i do very often.
@@MattYamamoto100 Actually I think that video would be pretty interesting. Provides an alternate viewpoint for the folks that are hearing to avoid the L bracket. Maybe change a few minds!
@@GeraldBertramPhotography cool I can do that since I do have both products in hand. For what it's worth...if I know it's going to be truly hybrid shooting day, I will slap the cage on. There are days when I know I'll only be shooting photos, so on those days I reach for the L-bracket. Thanks again!
@@MattYamamoto100 I'm really interested because I out right avoided the bracket for my A7C but I normally like to have my camera on a L on stills days for me. Would love to see if I could make it work for me based on what I see from you.
Does this contain product placements? 😉✌️
Actually no. I published way early on before any brands started sending stuff. 😁 no affiliate links either 👍🏻
@@MattYamamoto100 great thanks for the tip!
@@MattYamamoto100 is there a UV filter that you recommend? I definitely want to keep dust out of the new lens when shooting in dusty environments.
Do you think VND is necessary for photography? How bright the sun has to be for shutter speed of 1/4000 to be not enough with f1.4?
You could try some ETTR if shooting on really bright days if you don’t want a VND...but I highly suggest getting one. It not only helps for photos on bright days...but will also allow you to get some cool effects with water and keep your shutter speed when shooting video.
I had trouble on a super bright Southern California day at about 2pm. A 6-9 stop VND would have made life a lot easier. 😊
@@MattYamamoto100 if only getting one which stop do you recommend? 2to5 or 6to9
@@philipkwon3710 hmmm, if I think about my normal day-to-day...I use the 2-5 more often, so I would suggest starting with that
Great video as always, enjoy the presentation and content. I’m a longtime Leica user and also anything small, non obstructive that I can come up with (my first was a (screw-mount). Recently have gotten into the A7c from the A7r IV thanks to your videos. Will be following and looking forward to new content. Thanks
Is it true that you cannot fold out the screen in all directions when using the Smallrig and if so, why did you not know / say that?
Hi Matt, I just bought an a7c. I charged it up and made sure to give it a full charge before using it.
Now I m here changing the settings and stuff but I notice that my camera gets warm. Does your camera have this effect to? I'm just a bit concerned.
Thank you very much !
Does focus tracking works over hdmi?
Yep! I tested in 4k 24p and can confirm that tracking does work while outputting hdmi while recording internally. Huge plus for this camera
It doesn’t work for me while connected to hdmi. Focus Tracking( press object on the lcd and camera tracks that object)
@@AlfaMedtech do you have PC connection turned off?
@@SB-mr2nk Pc remote on, but no tracking over hdmi
what resolution and fps are you at? do you have proxies turned on?
I bought the eyecup and returned it right away. The top of the blocked the top of the viewfinder.
Damn that sucks. Sorry you had that issue. It worked well for me
Thank you for this info! I'm searching for a gimbal for a7c. Do you recommend any?
Zhiyun Weebill 2.
@@MrFraiche Thank you! I’ll look into it.
Hey, camera newbie here - what do I need to buy to continuously power my new Sony A7C at home for say livestreaming instead of draining the batteries?
You'll need a dummy battery and power adapter. Like this one: www.amazon.com/Gonine-NP-FZ100-Adapter-Battery-Cameras/dp/B07D5V8KY5/
@@camerakungfu thank you!
Super!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
I highly recommend trying the peak design leash strap with the A7c. I used the slide lite previously but because of the stiffness of the material where it doubles over at the locks I found that while using the camera I just didn’t care for the strap. The leash solved that problem 100% and it’s plenty comfortable enough for a lighter setup like the A7c and Tamron 17-28.
good info. I went with the slide lite over the leash mostly for how it looked...but I'll give the leash a try. thanks!
Sweet! Hope it works out for you....mine are still going strong!
All of the strap have broken with a person at one time…
Hey! So glad to have come across your channel. Loved the short, crisp and to the point narratives.
Love from India.
I use a song A7C too, and this vid really helped me making a list for future purchases.
Hey Matt, thanks for this video and how informative you were with each item. I am tryin to put together the set up regarding the Polar Pro PMVND and the cover. I love that full set up. Can you please send me links to everything I need to build this set up? Thank you in advanced!
His stuff is junk. What irked me was the 3rd party charger! Don't you know that 3rd party chargers destroy and deplete the batteries life!!!!?????? SAP! Seriously educate yourself!
Don't get the smallrig cage as it doesn't work with the flippy screen
New video is going live at 6am California time addressing the cage vs l-bracket issue. I think you'll like it....or at least I hope you do! :)
How much does all these accessories cost in total ?
Buy once, cry once I suppose. haha
@@MattYamamoto100 you have a great channel going. It's especially nice seeing someone who comes from a pro perspective that can appreciate what the A7C is about.
@@chosenideahandle thanks for the kind words. I'm actually kind of annoyed that the bigger channels are kind of writing off the A7C. I don't think they gave it fair chance...or they're afraid to tell their audience that they're not using the "best" cameras. However, I keep seeing the A7C cropping in some of the bigger channel's videos. Strange
I was just harping to my freind about how satisfying the shutter sound is, and how unsatisfying it was to turn the silent shutter on when photographing a dog who was a bit scared of it. It just felt wrong!
Hello! Thank you for this very nice video! I’m currently struggling to get the Peak Design slide anchor through the small attach on the A7C.. did someone manage to get it through? Cause I’d love not to have to use the metallic brackets for the noise.. thanks !
just name brand slinging right left and center
True, they are all name brands...but I was sponsored or given anything for free. I truly like all of the products in the video. Name brands aren't all bad right? :)
I cant thank you enough Matt. This is a great coverage and set of tips. One question: When we see through the EVF, can I adjust the diopter to set my eye power? I see to see the display on the view finder blurred.
Bravo
Ok, I came for the eyecup... but damn... now I want those ND filters. (Peter McKinnon should pay you for this... seriously.)
