I ordered it using your link. Took a month to come from USA to UK so was very excited. Tried to fit it to my A7CR and it was TIGHT, super tight. Got it half way and panicked that I might never be able to get it off again. Had to use extreme force to get it off, to the point I thought it might break my camera. Now have to try and find a UPS drop off point to return it back to USA. It has A7CII stamped on the rear so it's for sure the correct version. I have left an Amazon review that should be published in a few days.
@@SPDTDLSecond this. I pushed mine all the way in my A7 CR and had a super hard time getting it out. It does make the camera feel super stable. Pity about the poor fit.
I bought the A7Cii fir the compactness so was hesitant to add bulk but got the smallrig plate & thumb grip based on this review and absolutely love the aesthetic & practicality of both! Thanks mate!
Love the video. There is nothing wrong with mixing form and function. The best picture is the one you actually take. Having a camera that you enjoy will motivate you to take it out more and capture more moments. Too bad the hot shoes limits which accessory you can use. I’m going to buy that thumb grip right away
Thanks for watching! I do use lens hoods on my 24mm and 50mm lens. Not on my 35mm 1.8 just to keep a smaller profile. Keep it in my camera bag just in case though!
Mine was tight. Most amazon reviews would agree. Also, it made it difficult to press the custom button because it sat a little too low. lastly the grip itself didn't feel natural. It's not normally where your thumb goes when you hold the camera. Sony should have just extended the thumb resting area on the camera itself. That'll be in the A7Ciii
Great video! Very informative! Just ordered the Clever Supply Co. leather strap. I have a question about the eye cup -- does it work with glasses? Thanks!
Just downsized from the full size bodies to the A7CR and A7CII. The grip still isn't large enough for me. They put a large grip on the 6700, why not on the A7C cameras? I'm currently using the PD hand grip strap which makes the grip usable for me. Another problem I have is that I like using L plates on my camera bodies. I'm currently using the PD plate which allows for the attachment of PD buds (or whatever they are called). But the placement of the memory card slot on the left doesn't allow for an L plate (as far as I know).
Would you happen to have a small travel case recommendation. Ice searched high and low and the best thing I could find is this hideous Lowepro bag. It won out from everything else I tried because it fits the camera exactly and makes the camera very quick and easy to access while providing adequate protection on the go. I've had to personally alter the bag to get rid of the orange and make it less hideous but I would really like a functional and good looking bag. Kameratasche Lowepro GearUp Creator Box Modern, travel size.
I've never shot with a flash. Could you do some videos on why/when you'd use it? Any videos I've ever looked at are tailored more at professional portrait photographers (not me)
Thank you for the video. Familiar with most of your recommendations but the flash was new and unique to me. I will look to get one. I just wish that you didn’t have to remove the thumb grip to use it. It’s why I haven’t adopted the eye cup either. I just make the default work. I do wish Sony had used the same eyecup design as the A6700. Haven’t received my thumb grip yet. Hope mine is well thought out like yours looks. Had one on my A7C but sent that one on to the new owner.
I saw how the thumb grip you linked is for the A7c. If that’s the case, do you feel any thumb grip designed for the A7c should work for the A7Cii/a7cr, as well? Thanks.
Oh nice! I was waiting for an eyecup to come out. Glad to see a good thumb grip too; the one I got was blocking the angled Menu and C1 buttons. Thanks for the recs!
Man, i really love your Videos. I started with Photography when i was like 14. And i got the A7C a Year ago after a lot of research and comparison. After i got the Camera i found your Channel. Since then i get a lot Good Input from your channel for that camera and photography at large. Really enjoying your Video Style, the Accessory Input, and also your Pictures ! Keep on the Good Work and have a lot of Fun with it !
Yess i have it (for a7c the version 1 of the grip with the base). It has a nice big handle and canera strap connector. However the camera is heavy now. It is good for video and better stabilization but for photo with a flash, it is heavy. I tried recently without, and it is definitely a good amount of additional weight.
This video is about affordable accessories and the Sony grip is definitely not affordable haha. I already made a video about it though and in the end I still prefer the Sony grip. Both are great in their own ways though
That’s a difficult question to answer because it depends on the person’s shooting style. Many would argue that a 24-70 2.8 is one of the most versatile lenses but I think it’s a little too bulky on the A7C cameras. Thus making you want to go out and shoot less. To me personally the 35mm 1.8 is my versatile lens.
What don’t you understand? I probably won’t make a video completely about it but I’m happy to help where I can. It’s just about as straightforward and simple as a flash can be!
The SmallRig plate has the QD-socket! Glad to see that SmallRig is now providing it. Wish the black one was designed like the silver one. I might get the silver one for my black A7CR just for the design difference. 🤪
Great video, Dylan. I am considering following your recommendation and getting the Junior Flash. But I have a question: what would you use as a diffuser? A piece of parchment paper and an elastic would probably do but it doesn't look very professional.
@DylanBlackburn and why you don't use extension grip from sony which was in the box? You think silver grip that you recommend is better? Just honestly!
I really wish the silver thumb grip wasn’t sold out. I bought the silver small rig grip before that sold out. And I have the peak design system on the way so I can use it with the strap I already have

I appreciate you asking before you buy so you can help support the channel! Sadly, as far as I'm aware of I can only share affiliate links that got to US Amazon. I appreciate you regardless though!
Hey Dylan, your video is really insightful for me. It helps me a lot to choose accessories for my A7C2. However, in my country, they don't sell finger thumbs for A7C2 but only A7C. Can I buy an A7C finger thumb, and then use it for my A7C2? Thank you so much for answering my question
