@@CaptApril123 true, just a shame they cancelled it, the show had so much raw potential, it could’ve been the next big thing but was quashed in its infancy
I'm never tired of watching this scene (and the whole episode), mostly because of their reactions. From Jayne's realization what had happened, to Wash's line about finding a crappy town where he's the hero, to Simon questioning his own sanity, and to Inara's "Jayne? Jayne Cobb?!"
I love it because it taught me one of the most important lessons of my life. The importance and power of hope and the lack of truth as a requirement for said hope.
I mean Kaylee is the one person I wanna have by my side when stranded on a lonely island or planet. Crafty and finds the joy in every situation, no matter how bad. That‘s the kind of folks you need in your life.
Weirdly one of the saddest episodes of the entire series for me. That young guy dying for Jane and Jane screaming that he’s not a hero. Always pricks my heart.
Indeed. It is tragic because Jayne did start seeing that the people in Canton really do need help, but his ego got in the way. Then during Ariel he basically reverted to thinking about money before crew despite this episode.
I like when he’s drunk later. “The hero of Canton, the man they call ME!” Also it gets a callback in the comics when they’re on a job and Mal tells Jayne to toss money to a monk. “The hero of Canton! He’s real!” Poor Wash, by the time he gets a memorial he’s not there anymore :( He was a hero and lost his life :(
Mission Serenity never happened. In my head it's never happened. although it's a shame i lose out on the great Operative character but oh well, Wash is too precious.
The way wash sits forward to absorb all of Jaynes story. I get the full vibes of Sailors sitting around in port to port, listening and sharing tales of the sea. Tales that they themselves in some other port will say, “Now I knew a man once ... “ to a 10 person crowd of rapt bar patrons.
Absolutely gotta love Wash at the end (and some excellent writing) going all meta and slightly breaking the fourth wall. “We gotta go the the crappy town where I’m a hero.”
i fell in love with this show - and that's one reason for it - the great humor :D one of the other really funny scenes is where jayne wants to exchange his favorit rifle for the redhead crazy wife xD
*you just know that during this particular shoot everyone was having so much fun and they knew this would be an instant classic and iconic moment within the collective geek culture that surrounds this series*
Guess what I got for Christmas? Yep, a home-made Jayne Cobb hat. It's a lovely knit. When it's on my noggin, I feel cunning. Addendum: At Costco this day, 01-20-2018, grandma pulled on my arm and commented, "I like your hat". I guess she was someones's grandma. She must have been 70-plus. I said, "You do?" She winked and said, "It's shiny." True story ... I swear by my pretty floral bonnet.
Don't give that man that Mudder's Milk! Heroes like Jayne get the best drink in the house! To our man, Jayne. This is my favorite episode of the series. Wash is a classic in this. Thus show was just amazing. A Legendary show that ended too soon.
@@thomaslorigan3586 I'm watching it very slowly - about 3/4 through season 2, but I think season 1 was overall better. I enjoy the show, but it feels weird to be tied to the same town after season 1, like they're stretching it out a little bit. I don't usually gravitate to things that are primarily comedy unless they go all out with it (like Danger 5). I think Resident Alien's Seth Macfarlane-esque style of making quips that might generate a chuckle - but aren't especially memorable - detracts from other elements. The music is phenomenal though, pretty much every episode has a great song that I've never heard before.
@@alexwaters21 Yup. I mean,I could maybe see a new series with new characters in the same verse, but other than that,no. And Wash dying wasn't a mistake,it was the perfect way for the audience to really feel the suspense and dread of the movies end.

Then again, a tavern is not required to be filled with professional bards. It would make sense if most folks in a small town tavern can carry a tempo but not an extraordinary tune.
FOX canceled it because it got low viewership and ratings .. the person in charge ( a woman ... just saying ) decided that she liked the episodes better out of order . So they aired them out of order and nobody liked it ( big surprise).
Think of it this way. Star Wars nearly never got released. Fox nearly canceled their contract with Lucas because of how far behind production was getting. Firefly and most sci-fi TV shows are expensive to produce especially compared to reality shows. Despite Whedon doing well with Buffy and other productions, it wasn't enough "good will" or "faith in producing content" or even "money laundering to your other project" to continue Firefly. I can see where Fox can look at the numbers and say that there wasn't enough demand for the money it took to produce the episodes, but there are definitely numbers that could be argued against that, and there was DEFINITELY interference from Fox themselves that caused issues such as airing the PILOT episode LAST. That was probably the dumbest network move I've heard of, and I hope whichever exec that made that decision lost his or her job. I'll edit my comment later to see if that did happen or not.
@@sirmoonslosthismind I hear they're taking down statues in America these days. Jayne's statue would keep getting put back up by the mudders though, so it'll be fine :)
