The whole second half- and climax - of the movie rests on the song being good, and if it wasn't then this movie wouldn't have had the ability to make 76 million dollars during its 3-month-long screening back in 2000.
Charles During, the guy who comes on the stage last, was not only an excellent actor, but a hero and badass as well. He was a WWII vet who landed with an Artillery unit on the Normandy beaches after the initial landings. After being wounded by a German anti-personnel mine he spent six months recovering. He was awarded three Purple Hearts, and the Silver and Bronze Stars with Valor, as well as the WWII Victory medal, incredible man and hero!
He played a WWII vet in NCIS, season 2, episode 7, that had lived almost 60 years with the guilt of killing his best friend while hiding from the Japanese. If you haven't seen this show and episode I highly recommend it.
I once read that the directors originally wanted to actually have George Clooney singing the song himself, but after just 15 seconds of him singing, they decided to hire a actual singer. That's how the band Union Station ended up singing the actual song!! 😆

I thought it was George that asked to do the singing himself and they let him do it. Then they hired someone to dub over it for the release because he was not good.
