    Honestly they really did Alan Turing dirty in this game, just like the Brits really did him dirty in real life.
    Jokes aside, maybe a buff to him would be 1 extra diplomatic vision in all civilizations you are at war with? (because of his role in breaking the enigma code and stuff)

    • @wombat4191
      @wombat4191 3 года назад +3

      Him being possibly the worst scientist is enhanced by the fact that he overlaps with the engineer Ada Lovelace, who also boost Computers, and her another skill is far superior. So if you got Lovelace, Turing is almost completely useless. And boosting Computers isn't that hard anyways, though sometimes you will want to rush it to get flood barriers (why is it unlocked by computers btw?).

      I would argue he has some nice uses. On a deity game where you are focusing solely on 1 science victory, on a map of 11 other deities, science and G.Scientists go fast. He helped me complete the tech tree that littttle bit faster on my way to research laser stations. Because the future era is ALWAYS random, he has use in at least getting a better chance to find the tech to help win

  • @levsonc
    @levsonc 4 года назад +43

    There is a phrase that eurekas are random, but you can reduce randomness by getting eurekas that you can get by self. Just don't use scientist as soon as you get them, wait until the moment when easy to get eurekas will be triggered already. Yes, it adds a bit of management, but you get a good science progression in return, so this worth it.

    • @Jack_Rakan
      @Jack_Rakan 4 года назад +6

      The thing is, on deity you need to beeline the important techs, and ignore inconsequential ones until they become prerequisites later in the game. And at that point you finish the leftover techs in 2-3 turns anyway, regardless of if they are Eureka'd or not. The best you can do is remember if there are any Eureka's you're currently working towards (like building a University next to a mountain, or a second University, or a certain Civic that would give a Eureka is currently being researched), and delay activating the GS for a few turns.

  • @brandobatel

    I think janaki should be moved to a 3. If not a 2
    At that late point in the game, you are likely chopping rainforest as you mass settle. On top of that, 400 sci per tile isn't that much. It might help you a bit but everything costs a good deal then.

    • @ShaqPlaque
      @ShaqPlaque 3 года назад +1

      Get open borders and send her on an expedition to Pedro or Kupe or someone else who hasn't chopped their rainforests. Janaki can see up to 7 tiles, as opposed to Galileo who sees 5 at most or Darwin who sees 4 at most (2 or 1 max on some maps). I agree with Saxy Gamer on Janaki's rating

  • @deanlemckeevans
    @deanlemckeevans 4 года назад +12

    I agree with most of the rankings I might put Abdus Salam as a 3 since I find a lot of the Eurekas are harder to get later in the game and it provides a eureka for all of the techs which will save a lot of time compared to the other scientists which just give you a random couple eurekas

  • @tonyvu3235

    Carl sagan insta builds the exoplanet expedition so the 1 charge is not a big deal

    • @wombat4191
      @wombat4191 3 года назад

      Yeah, definitely worth rank 5 imo. Combined with the engineer Korolev you can surprise your competition in pvp. If another player got Kwolek and seems to be leading, everyone will try to bring them down. Then you just push through two of the 4 buildable phases and snatch the victory. Provided nobody realized you got Sagan and/or Korolev.
      That is of course if your pvp goes that far before someone wins by domination. Still great ones in pve as well though.

  • @matthaeus5373
    @matthaeus5373 4 года назад +9

    Another thing with the eureka scientists is that (especially later on) you will have boosted or even researched all if not most of the techs from the scientists era, depending on how much science you have and how many great people everyone else is earning.
    So some of the scientists are literally one good for 1 era score for recruiting them late on, so don’t be afraid to pass on some of them

  • @torstenwinkler8610
    @torstenwinkler8610 4 года назад +9

    Maybe you could tackle this by going the other way. Take a Victory type (like Science) and make a video what great people are usefull to that victory. Because from a players point of view you don't align your strategy to what Great People you can get, but you try to get the Great People that serve your desired victory type.

    Food for thought: regarding the new tech/civic shuffle mode, I think Eureka scientists really get boosted for being able to reveal a tech's location. I actually had Alan Turing save some coastal tiles from early flooding (everyone and their damn soothsayers burned the ice caps before it was even the industrial era) thanks to him revealing computers and letting me b-line it instead of probing for it.

    You should state what the eureka for chemistry, mathematics, and computers are. Some eurekas are hard to get. Others are easy but kind of orthogonal to the strategy you are following. Having the boost for free and having it NOT be random can be powerful and this wasn't even discussed in this video sadly.

    • @orangesilver8
      @orangesilver8 4 года назад +5

      Mathematics has a very very easy eureka. Build 3 different specialty districts. That is something you will always want to do, it's just a matter of time. Thus a great scientist boosting it is really bad. Computers only requires a tier 3 government, or maybe a tier 2 government with a bunch of wonders to boost how many policy slots you have. Again something you always want to do it's just a matter of time. Bad use for a great scientist. Chemistry wants a level 2 alliance, which might be the only one you don't decide to get.
      The other downside of boosting a specific technology is not just getting the boost on your own, but just researching the technology on your own. If you see chemistry is getting a level 2 alliance and that you won't be doing that, you'd want to just research it quickly because that's a very useful science tech. Then 20 turns later you get Mendeleev and he's almost completely useless.

    • @yngfljm2277
      @yngfljm2277 3 года назад

      Unfortunately, a lot of stuff was not discussed in this video which is disappointing because this would've been the best avenue to do so. Like another example of something not being mentioned is Maria Leakey, and having the ability to snatch her up before another civ does that actually is using relics and tourism for a culture victory - even though you aren't. Letting a culture civ grab her for free could potentially lose you the game. It's situational of course, but so is all the Great People.

    • @ShaqPlaque
      @ShaqPlaque 3 года назад

      @@orangesilver8 Honestly, I've started feeling getting the boost on Chemistry naturally is as much a guarantee as Mathematics. If I'm going for a science victory, I intend to have multiple alliances with the AI as a means of deflecting the need to spend as much on my military. Computers is the one I've found to be less certain, as if I'm really crushing it with science production, it's possible I've done so at the expense of my culture production, and I might be nearing Computers before a Tier 3 Government. Even in a Domination victory, I've found the higher difficulty levels means I need alliances so I'm not fighting the world all at once.

    I think a bit of analysis would be good on the scientists that give random eurekas vs the ones that give straight science. For example if 3 random eurekas from an era is higher than around 1000-1500 science then they are closer to equal. However the straight science can be more predictable where it is applied, so still a little better.
    Mary Leaky is probably correct to rate as a 4, but not because she is a 4 in culture and a 1 in science victories. She is like a 7+ on a 5pt scale in culture games.
    Abdus Salam is easily a 1, you'd have to try hard to even get him and have more than 1 eureka to trigger.

    The thing about Euclid and Turing is that the specific eureka they provide (Mathematics and Computers) are two of the easiest eurekas to get in the game, and I'll either have either already activated the eureka or will about to activate it. So basically, they're only providing 1 Eureka.
    Mendelev's Chemistry I think is just a wee bit harder to get, just because the AI can be difficult to keep friendly enough to get a level 2 alliance. It's still bad, but not as bad.

    i think Salam doesnt deserve a 2. ALL eureka is pretty damned strong. obviously its stupidly strong if you get him early in before you have already earned a bunch, or even flat out researched to completion. but even if its not optimal for your benefit, it can definitely be high value to just simply deny it from the ai. even if you are 10 or 20% ahead of them on science per turn, if they instantly wipe out the need for wasting time and production chasing those eurekas, and cutting all their research costs by 40%, they would start seriously giving you a run for your money.
    id give him a 3. hes clearly got obvious situations where hes stupid strong or stupid weak. but most situations, hes a solid choice.

    • @Sidnv
      @Sidnv 4 года назад

      In a science victory, you're often one turning all the techs at that point anyways, so the eurekas just don't matter. In any other victory condition, you don't need any of those techs to win. He comes too late to have any real impact, I would rate him a 1 actually.

    I think you kinda misunderstood Alfred Nobel's effect, if I'm correct it gives you 20 Great People Points for every great persons, which means for instance if you grab one great scientist, you start the following one with 20 GSP right away. I also thinks it works when someone else grabs one, though I'm less sure of that.
    Still not crazy good, but still better than 20 points once.

  • @Cuorion

    I would give Alan Turing at least a 2 because he's a key part for naval domination strategies, since these tend to rush the upper part of the science tree, including Computers to avoid losing half their cities, while getting the Bombers early in the game, and boosting Computers via the culture tree is not gonna happen in this situation.

  • @ForeverDayGreen
    @ForeverDayGreen 4 года назад

    Some changes i would make.
    1. Aryabhata and Euclid might actually be slightly better than you rated them since they'll also give you the eureka for Education (~150 Science) aswell. If you play a bit around recruiting them you can probably get ~400 Science from them. Thus i would consider them rating higher.
    2. Downgrade all medieval Scientist by 1 tier. Simply because Newton or Galileo are so much better in comparison that you dont want to miss out because you got one of them
    3. Emilie Du Chatelet down to Tier 1. Being in direct competition with Newton and Galileo mean you would probably rather pass on her to get one of those.
    4. Downgrade Darwin by 1. In your average game Darwin will be 1k Science. While he provides utility to make a timing push for a specific tech to get a wonder him only giving you barely enough for a modern era tech just isnt enough.
    5. Ammal down a tier. Again you risk missing on the big scientists of Sagan and Kwolek in order to get an expected value of 1.6-2k science which is basically 2.5 information era eureka worth of science. Difficult to judge tho. As the first Atomic era scientist she would probably rank in tier 5 for me.
    6. Downgrade Salam to tier 1. Again the direct opposition is the problem. If he is the last one left you probably lost the science race anyway.

    Almost 100% agree with all of the rankings! There are only two maybe 3 I would personally change a little bit, Sagan in my book should be a five especially if you build your last space mission in one or two turns is absolutely disgusting and the other two I don't feel as strongly about. With both Omar and Aryabhata I would argue that they come early enough that maybe I would give them a 3. (Aryabhata more so than Omar) Just cause they can end up changing the way you play that entire game if they give you the one or two things you might be missing! Later I totally agree that they kinda suck. D: Definitely getting a like!
    Edit: Side note, Einstein and Kwolek should get a 6/5 for being so good!
    Double Edit: Comments changed my mind, Abdus definitely deserves a 1. Lol

    I'd bump Erwin S. to a 3. The techs he gives Eurekas for have a lot of "only from Scientist or Spy" and at that point in the game, if you're leading Science, you're not gonna be stealing Eurekas from the AI. I generally find him more helpful than the earlier ones is what I'm saying.

  • @andrewsansone9364

    i think Alan Turing deserves a 2 since you can plan to use him once most of the techs you have left to boost are the ones that need to be boosted through spies or great scientists and these go unboosted in almost all my games, maybe that's just me being bad about using spies but i never feel bad about getting Alan Turing.

    You said since Mary Leakey is good for culture victory you'll give her a four, but when you are considering her in a culture victory context she's obviously a five. She's practically a must have for a culture victory.

    • @figa5567
      @figa5567 3 года назад

      not really, I wouldn't say she's a must have by any means. Yeah she's great if you can get her, but chances are you're never going to see her. It's super hard to generate scientist points if you're going for a culture victory, since you're so busy with scaling production and gold and great work infrastructure (ie theater squares and wonders). Chances are she'll fall in the hands of the boys going for science victory.
      Tourism victories usually end up scaling extremely hard with the powerful tourism multipliers you get from wonders and late game civics/techs, and seaside resorts, so it's not like it's worth it to drop the production of those wonders and builders to dedicate some campus research programs towards being able to faith or gold purchase her, I'd say in most cases.

    Neil deGrasse Tyson (Info era) should be one of the Great Scientists that you can bid for in Civilization 6. I'd bet that there already is a mod in Steam that would add him to the list but that wouldn't be necessary for 7 if he was included in the vanilla version.
    Conversation: What would his superpower be? Keep in mind that other players, including AI, could outbid you if they have more GPP/gold than you -it should be impossible to buy him with faith- so we don't want to give him too much game-breaking power. Given his passion for inspiring younger generations to become scientists, my first idea is he would add ALL buildings not built yet INSTANTLY to a Campus district he is standing in, with 2 charges so that he can do it twice! While smart players would send him to new Campus districts that don't have any buildings so that they get a total of 6 free buildings, the AI would likely send him to where it already built Universities and get only 2 free Labs.
    His alternate power only in Gathering Storm could be a one-time severe reduction in global carbon emissions and even reverse one phase of climate change! The immediate effect being unflooding the most recently flooded tiles but each player would have to repair districts & improvements the usual way. Since that would benefit every player in the game, using him this way would grant the player who had him a huge bonus of diplomatic election points (not Victory points directly but enough to buy Diplo Victory one election earlier). I would love to read other superpower ideas if you have any!

    Stephanie Kwolek (and to a lesser degree Carl Sagan) is great on paper, but they arrive far too late in the game. In my recent science victories I never even unlocked them before the exoplanet expedition arrived the nearest star and I won. She should really be an Atomic Era GS at the least. The ones that do help a science game are the Great engineers however. Sergei Korolev IS an Atomic Era GE, and adds 1500 prod to a project (which is nearly enough to instafinish one) and with the mausoleum of halicarnassos gains 2 charges over Carl Sagans 1. Thats a LOT stronger for a science victory than Sagan/Kwolek will ever be. Sagan/Kwolek are better for finishing space projects when you are NOT going for a science victory and want to just launch a satellite or moon landing in the very very late game.

    The one that heals 20 hp per turn is freaking godlike man. Off course he's not that good if you go fo culture/diplomacy/religion but in all cases, if you're really focused on these types of victory there's a chance you're not getting a great scientist at all unless you buy it with gold and faith anyway. And in case you play defensive, this man makes your army almost unbreakable on home territory so... Not my fav great scientist neither, but a goddamn awesome great general in every game.

  • @Larrath

    I think your focus on the Science Victory condition was a bit inconsistent. For example, you decided to give Mary Leaky a 4 due to her Tourism benefit, even though that only helps a Cultural victory -- but in science-focused game she is unlikely to generate more science than Charles Darwin (who got a 3). Al-Zahrawi is totally useless for a science victory, but his benefit for a Domination (or even just an early war) can be easily greater than Leaky's.
    If I can make a suggestion, I would really like to see each Great Person get two scores: one for their standard victory type if applicable (Science for Great Scientist, Domination for Great General and Admiral, not sure about the others), and also a score for the person's best victory type. Would you prefer Al-Zahrawi in a game with strong Domination or Hildegard in a game with strong Religion?

    Janaki Ammai rating are wrong. He comes at atomic age and usually very late game. Most of rainforest are chopped and hard to come by if at all. Also at best 1600-2000 science at that point are not many turns as you often create around 400-600 pr turn, meaning 4-5 turns saved. Basically the same as a late game eureka. I say he is a 1 or perhaps 2 if we are being nice. If he came in a earlier age he might be more viable.

      This is kind of conteracted by the fact that campus spam is a lot more frequent for human players than perhaps other gpp generating districts. So at the end of the day they often have a higher presence in games compared to other great people just because you are more likely to be ahead of the AI on this front. I think this is a good balance because if there aren't so many mediocre eureka ones science victory or science focus might be a bit too strong.

      Hypatia, Newton, Einstein are very strong for science victories, as are the ones that complete space race projects. Mary Leakey is the most important great person for a culture victory. Hildegard is incredible with certain civs that can get huge holy site adjacency (Russia, Mali, Brazil, Australia mainly, but also Japan to some extent). Abu al-qasim is very good if you go for a knight timing push. All the other ones are weak or situational I agree.

      Hmm, I’m conflicted on this. He’s brilliant but Stephanie Kwolek is better. He’s also inferior to his GE competitors because of the Mausoleum. If Stephanie had already been taken I’d get him instantly, but if it were a choice between him and an equivalent great engineer for instance (which I’ve seen a few times thanks to the AI being slower to churn GEs than GS) I might patronise the GE and skip him to try for Kwolek. Then again you might not want the AI to get him so... yeah.

      It now gives production in holy sites equal to their adjacency bonus. Combine that with some of the new pantheons which do stuff like +1 holy site adjacency from tundra, and you can really easily get 4+ adjacency if you just spawn near the top or bottom of the map. You can then double that with the policy card (I think it's called Scriptures).

    Potato McWhiskey would disagree with you on Mary Leahky. And so do I. You might want to build one or 2 Theatre Squares, even in a Science game, because you do need some culture (for Civics like Space Race for the ISS card), and Artifacts are much easier to get in a Science game. And she deserves a 5 for a culture game.

    • @swall185
      @swall185 4 года назад

      Also, you'll have artifacts even in a science game just to get rid of those useless Antiquity Sites. Sometimes, I WISH some British Archaeologists would come and steal my cultural history, just so I can actually build things.

  • @StyxTBuferd
    @StyxTBuferd 4 года назад

    Hildegard not being a 5 is a mistake. At least right now it's incredibly easy to engineer Holy Sites to be +10 or even +20 faith. She is at least on part with Hypatia even with a more conservative Holy Site imo. You play religion into science specifically for her and for some of the other bonuses like Jesuit Education.

    • @Sidnv
      @Sidnv 4 года назад +1

      At this point, if you can get +10 holy sites, Work Ethic just breaks the game in half, so religion is a no brainer to push for. +10 production in the ancient era is just ridiculous.

Combined with work ethic and Bingen that's +18 Faith, +18 Production and +18 Science from a single district. Also, you aren't going to get +15 adjacency, before applying the cards 100% bonus.
