Who Owns The Haunted Mansion?

  • The Haunted Mansion looms over New Orleans Square, Liberty Square, and Fantasyland and beckons wary guests to enter if they dare. Over the years, many of these same guests leave with questions. Who is the Ghost Host? Why is there a ghost bride in the attic? Who owns the building, the Mansion itself? Today, I aim to answer 1/3rd of those questions.

    The first time I went to Disneyland I got tired of walking and my grandma offered to let me sit in her wheel chair while she walked around a bit. So im in the line for the Haunted Mansion chilling in the wheel chair near the back of the line, and suddenly employees come out of no where and push me to the front of the line (At this point they only told my mom to come with them) and a lady leans in and tells me Im gonna have to walk a little for this ride but I can get help if I really needed it. Suddenly 8 year old me realized these people thought I was handicap, I looked back at the line, took a deep breath and said “I think I can make it that far...” I REGRET NOTHING.

      wmascolina This happened to me too kind of. I was at Disney this Christmas and I have a heart problem so my doctor subscribed me a wheel chair since I can't walk that far. My brother in law who teases me in a fun way pulled my wheel chair all the way backwards and I was stuck upside down while he was laughing. People and workers got mad at him for bullying a handicapped person and I had to explain that I am okay relax no big deal lol. I even said the old Mighty Python reference "It's just a flesh wound." Easy to say the Mouse wasn't happy and my brother in law almost got kicked out of Disney and we got free passes ha ha.

      Indeed. One of the times I went to Disney World, we were there with my grandfather. Because of his knees and other health issues, he used a scooter to get around the park. Naturally, the entire family took advantage of this.
      And when I say "entire family", I mean up to 20 people would "scoot" right to the front of some lines. Between that and Fast Pass, I don't think I waited in an entire line that entire trip.
      Was cool when we got to be "guests of honor" of sorts at "The American Adventure" in Epcot and go up to the 2nd floor and welcome people to the ride.

    My fave thing about the haunted mansion is that you never seem to know enough. Like I was obsessed (equally with pirates but I now think I know everything about pirates). Haunted mension just keeps having history and myths and more developments etc. I have researched and obsessed with it since I was 12 I am now 26 and I’m still finding out more. It’s the only Disney ride with that kinda history. I feel there should be an hour or 2 long video with loads of myths, clips and different refurbishments of this ride. I can’t get enough and I long for a really in depth video of everything about this ride. I wanna see the kind of documentary that Walt made for for pirates but sadly it was never made for this amazing mysterious attraction! LOVE IT!

      Offhand Disney A theory I have is bizarre but it ties into the Haunted Mansion itself. In his lifetime Michael Jackson made four “scary” songs. Thriller, Ghosts, Is It Scary, And Threatened. I have a feeling that they are all connected to the Mansion. Thriller has Michael and his girlfriend discover the Mansion and Michael comforting his girlfriend and assuring her that he will defeat the ghosts and when Vincent Prices narration at the end of the song happens, it’s actually Price as the Ghost Host preparing to do battle with Michael. Ghosts has Michael now discovering that the ghosts have corrupted his girlfriend as a challenge for a rematch after he defeated them in Thriller and him deciding to fight them once and for all. Is It Scary has Michael now choosing to fight the ghosts for the final time and deciding to intimidate them. Threatened now has Michael as well as good ghosts including Leota combating the evil ghosts for the final time and defeating them rescuing his girlfriend. I know it sounds stupid but it makes sense to me.

    Can't wait for the second part!
    I understand that the 'Master Gracey isn't the owner thing' is accurate but since they've made merch (I have the pin. The lettering is awesome, ok?) I like that idea. Because yes it's after the imagineer, but it can be an part of the story for the Haunted Mansion, too.
    You mentioned it in your vid, that back in the day 'Master' was the term for a younger boy who couldn't be called 'Mister' in society, yet. But, hat if he was the heir to receiving the manor/mansion but died at a young age? In dedication, they had a portrait made of him but looking older, because grief. The portrait ages because Gracey never got to. Realizing this, the mansion became a haven for Ghosts since Gracey couldn't very well have living people visiting because it became haunted. Idk. I know there's holes and I'm probably not making a lot of sense, but it's just something I thought of to tie in some of the things and merch at the Mansion.
    Love your vids!

    Edit: Someone else in the comments (Ian Buck) reminded me that in the Magic Kingdom version(not my home version, as to why I forgot), in the exit crypt you see another Monument to Master Gracie and it says his last bride killed him. Using some deduction, Constance and Gracie were married and she murdered him, as to why she's stuck in the attic and Gracie is Master of the house.

    I’ve always wondered why Constance’s husbands past don’t appear in the mansion? Maybe you will say in the next video! I love the idea of Constance being the owner, however, a lady being in charge of a manor was considered very improper if not illegal in the Victorian era which based on the costuming and architecture we can assume this was during. Although it would be cool if Constance obtained the mansion through one of her many dead husbands! Widows did have a some rights and that was one of them. Can’t wait to see your definitive answer!

    • @racheltheclumsy
      @racheltheclumsy 6 лет назад +3

      Matthew Chenault ah I should’ve been more specific. Women couldn’t inherit an estate or a title. It occurs to me now that such a situation would not be the case in the US. I was thinking of Great Britain.

    • @racheltheclumsy
      @racheltheclumsy 6 лет назад +1

      Matthew Chenault yes, women could inherit by being widowed. What I was trying to say is that women could not inherit an estate or title (although I am not sure about property in general) through parentage. For example if the manor was owned by Constance’s father, and it was an estate with a title (which it wouldn’t have been because it was in the US, I am just using this as an example) Constance would not have been able to inherit. To clarify my point, a woman could not be the lord of a manor, she could only become the lady of one by marrying, even if she was raised with a title. I originally made the mistake of assuming that the manor would be a manor with a title like in the UK, before I remembered that the phantom manor is supposed to be in New Orleans. That’s my bad, but, can I ask, why are you picking on me in a rather unfriendly way? You could have simply added your correction in a nice way but instead you feel the need to be boastful and add unnecessary information ie. Your little diatribe about a civil war battle to get to your example. I don’t see why it is necessary to try to belittle me at every turn. We are all here to have fun and talk about Disney. So why make it unpleasant? I understand the need to correct an inaccuracy, so I don’t blame you for that, however, when you refuse to see what the other person is trying to say (even if they failed to be clear about it originally, which again, is my bad) it becomes less of a conversation and more of a lecture. If I wanted to be lectured on the Civil War I’d probably take a class about it or be watching a video on that. One thing is for sure, I don’t need you to try and mansplain things to me and try to make me feel stupid which is very much what you are doing. You are being incredibly patronizing and I do not appreciate it. Remember, you will catch more bees with honey than vinegar.

    Funny thing is, you're right and wrong. According to the comic book series, William Gracey was a pirate who staged a mutiny and took over as captain, even decapitating the ship's gunrunner and hiding his head in a hatbox (sound familiar?). After his father died, he retired from piracy and settled down in his newly inherited mansion, becoming Master Gracey. However, the ghosts of his betrayed pirate crew came back for revenge and killed his fiancée, causing him to hang himself in the rafters. After his death, the mansion was bought by George Hightower, a wealthy aristocrat who ended up marrying Constance Hatchaway. Constance murdered him as she did with her past husbands, but decided to settle down in her newly inherited mansion and flaunt her wealth for the rest of her days.
    So, in short, Master Gracey/the Ghost Host (yes, they are the same person) and Constance Hatchaway both owned the mansion at one point.

    In case anyone is curious, There is a book series called Tales from the haunted Mansion that tell the stories of some of it's 999 inhabitants. It's meant for kids but that's never really stopped anyone. Not sure if it's canon but you know, might be worth a read.

    Love the vids ! Best source is to watch “tony baxter backstage at the haunted mansion” he confirms that the ageing man in the portrait, is master gracey, and IS the ghost host, and IS the owner of the haunted mansion. There is also unused paul frees dialogue where he says “ i am your host, your ghost host - the lord and master of this mansion”

    If I was Disney, I would either stick to the Captain Gore story, and connect to Pirates of the Caribbean, or make a story relating the the antebellum period or the civil war. Like, for example, the mansion was part of a plantation, or owned by a Civil War General.

    Spoiler alert, or at least my theory as to why, Constance is the owner due to the fact that we clearly see her own photographs and belongings are in the attic, where as no other ghosts are implied to have been residents there through those means. Also, due to her habit of marrying men and killing them off, she would be able to get all their assets, which includes ownership of the mansion from one of her husbands.
    Edit: Realized I posted this a week after this came out, so I guess I'll see if I'm right in watching part 2. Haha.

    Offhand, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but in WDW for quite a while there was a shipping crate outside the mansion. It was addressed to “Gracey Manor”, so in actuality, the WDW version could be considered the home of Master Gracey. Although, this detail obviously came from the fan made storyline arising from Yale Gracey’s tombstone outside the ride. But I guess you could consider it canon.

    I rememeber reading somewhere that canonly the first two ghosts of the house are the 2 men hired to built it. The younger was the jealous of the elder becuae he was getting more praise. He sealed his partner in a coffin in the basement, but becuase only his partner knew the layout of the house he ended up permanent lost with only a candlestick to help him see his way

    I'm a former cast member for Magic Kingdom park and I can unequivocally confirm that Constance is in fact the deed holder of the land and the house. Refer to the rhyme at the end of The Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom, on the large gravestone to your left while exiting the house. 7 Winsome wives, some fat some thin, six of them were faithful - but the seventh did him in...

    I've always stuck to the theory that Master Gracey is the owner of the mansion, mainly because I live much closer to WDW and I'm so used to their mansion. It just makes sense to me, seeing as we assume that the portrait above the fireplace in the foyer is of him, and even if it was never stated explicitly, Disney kind of just went along with the theory anyways (mainly through merchandise, most of which is exclusively sold at WDW). I know that it was never intended for him to be the master of the mansion, but it's such a popular theory that I definitely support. However, Master Gracey is NOT the Ghost Host, even though Disney is now trying to convince us otherwise (at least in the merchandise, but it seems like Disney really can't make up their minds at this point).

    I know this video came out a year ago, but there’s a new photo hanging on the wall in the California mansion (as of summer 2019) and a backstory saying the ghost host is in fact the owner. In the hallway of doors moving on the riders right hand side there’s a tall portrait of a man who is the host / owner. If you ask some haunted mansion cast members they’ll tell you the same thing.

    I think the human is a reference to the haunted mansion GameCube game. The plot of the game is you’re a grounds keeper and you have to make it threw the house. The grounds keeper holds a lantern and looks exactly like the human on the ride. He also shakes in the game and is scared like the human on the ride.
