My favorite lame Disney activity is going on the Kilimanjaro Safari on a really hot day when most of the animals are sleeping, and then getting to listen to the tour guides awkwardly attempting to make jokes to fill the whole 30 minutes, since none of the animals are out. Disney World may be expensive, but you really can’t put a price on that kind of entertainment. @@pfifltrigg after looking up a bunch of articles/transcripts about this, I *believe* the turkeys are sent to various farms now, though there is some suspicion that they are just killed later in life (i couldn't find a lot of evidence to back this one up tho). they used to be sent to a farm called Frying Pan Park (yikes) but for the past few years, they've been sent to a place called Gobbler's Rest at Virginia Tech's research center where they kinda just chill out/provide DNA samples for research purposes (like genome sequencing and stuff). they mostly only live for a year or two (in one case i saw like 8 months) instead of the 5-10 year lifespan because the turkeys are selectively bred to gain so much weight their bones can't support them (not a complete downer tho! there was another case of a presidential turkey named Courage who lost a bunch of weight thanks to its handlers and it lived for 6 years). i spent about 30 minutes looking this all up anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk,,

Your description of "orange swirl" soft-serve resonated with me: "I keep getting them, even if I'm not like feeling it, if I'm full, if I'm cold, I will get them anyway because I know I can't get them at home." This is exactly how I feel about egg salad sandwiches from convenience stores in Japan. I am not exaggerating when I say that I average one a day every time I come here (and I've been here for 90 days on this current visit). If I see one I will buy it, even if I just had one 12 hours ago, or I'm not really in the mood. I will buy and eat it just because I know I can't find its equal in the US. And the thing is, I seldom eat egg salad sandwiches in the US unless I make my own, and the egg salad I make is nothing like the somewhat bland egg salad they have in those sandwiches.

      @trippmoore 3 года назад +27

Hmmm, I live on Oahu and we (used to) get a lot of Japanese tourists and there are also many American's of Japanese descent living here for generations as well. Because of this, we have quite a few Japanese-style things on offer here to cater to both of these groups as well as the "local" population that has become a true melting pot of various cultures. It's actually one of the best things about living here. At least for this haole from the mainland, it is. It's like what the rest of the US would be like if we truly were the country that we sell ourselves as to the rest of the world and our own citizenry (at least in this one respect. We still have plenty of the same problems as the rest of the country). But I digress... The point I wanted to bring up is that I love egg salad sandwiches. I never really thought about Japan being a place for a great egg salad sandwich, but now that you mention it, it seems like the kind of thing that they would excel at. Especially of the pre-packaged, convenience store variety. And now that I think of it I know I've seen them in ABC Stores and 7-11s. I'm sure they have the same quality Japanese-style egg salad sandwiches here for all these reasons, or if just to cater to the Japanese tourist market for a little piece of home while abroad. So now I must seek out these egg salad sandwiches locally and have one today! I will report back on my success or failures. Is there anything I should look for in seeking out the perfect specimen? Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa!

On my last trip to Disney, my family took shelter in The Carousel of Progress to escape the rain, along with an entire theatre of people who had the same idea. Little did we know that we'd all be spending the next hour together as the ride broke down and trapped us all in the 1940s, slowly eroding away at our sanity as the show repeated itself on and on and on--seven times, I think. By the time the ride spirits deemed us sufficiently conditioned--indoctrinated--and saw fit to release us to the next decade, we were all together, a bunch of strangers, reciting the dialogue and singing the song. The ride then proceeded to break down again later on, but only for one repetition--as if to test us. We dutifully sang along and were allow to escape our torture, released back to the muggy Floridian landscape.
It's a treasured experience, and pretty much the only thing I remember from Disney; all my other memories were eclipsed by going to Universal that same week and crying when I walked into Hogsmeade for the first time.

Not just goats! There is an underrated section in the “spider museum” where you can watch actual veterinarians treating the park’s animals. I watched a surgery on a duck through a glass wall. They also have a special phone that you pick up if you have a question and, if they are able to, one of the surgeon’s assistant’s will pick it up and answer any questions you have. It was absolutely incredible. It feels like you are peaking behind the curtain in a way. Where else are you going to be allowed to watch something like that?

John Smith oops I meant animal kingdom. Magic is the one with the castle. Yes, they do say it’s more than a zoo but it’s basically like a really cool zoo with a few rides. They added pandora (im pretty sure it’s there) since I went last.
As for the phone lots of people were using it. They also had a speaker that they kept on for most of the operation so you could hear what they were talking about and they did a great job explaining what was happening and encouraging people to use the phone. Most of the little kids had the same dumb kid questions though bit they were super patient and made everyone feel good. The kids only wanted to know the ducks name, how old he was, what his favorite food is etc. only the adults had good questions about the surgery

No one will see this but I have to tell someone that the reason Carousel of Progress stops so much is because whenever someone goes out the emergency exit door in the middle of the ride the system freaks out and refuses to move because it doesn't want the hypothetical person at the door to get crushed, so it just starts the current scene again. Which people don't want to see again so...they go out the emergency exit. Which causes the scene to repeat again. So you get in a nightmare spiral of constant leaving and repeating, and the only ethical way out is to finish the whole thing, because otherwise you doom everyone else inside. -the bootstrappers, it’s the pirate band in New Orleans square and I love them an unhealthy amount
    - cars land. Cars land at day? Wonderful, feels so much like a small highway town in southern Utah. Cars land at night? Life changing. Just like, go sit outside of flo’s V8 and just chill, or like just behind the cozy cone lobby building? It’s so nice I love it there.
    - the benches next to the rivers of America at the intersection of new Orleans square, frontier land, and adventure land. Something interesting is always going on, wether it’s the bootstrappers (my beloved) the jazz band at the French market, the mark twain, something on Tom sawyers island, characters coming in and from the three themed areas, the smell of the popcorn cart and pirates? It’s just the prime Disneyland spot.

A couple things happened to me on one really good trip:
First, I went to California Adventure to attend a showing at the Animation Academy. At that time I was dreaming of becoming a Disney animator, so of course I just loved the show itself. But then the guy conducting the class (Noel I think) brought me up to his desk afterward and gave me a couple of his drawings and this amazing "follow your dreams" speech. Still have his drawings and the pics I got with him ten years later. Super lovely man. I think he's still doing the classes too, so y'all should check him out after COVID's under control.
And later that night, back in Disneyland, I went to the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. I went buy my parents a couple sodas, only to have the cashier be like "oh hey you're the 100th customer today" and they gave me a free banana split (maybe it was ice cream nachos??). Me, a temporarily unsupervised 12-year-old, was given this massive bowl of ice cream and left to my own devices.
It goes without saying that while the scenery, the treats, the shows, the rides all make for a great experience, it's the employees that make it a perfect experience. So thank you to the Disney employees that make each trip special.

But really, I also felt encouraged to share the things I like, even if they might seem lame to some people, because it might resonant or just be entertaining to the right people. So Jenny, not to go all Flynn Rider on you, but thanks for helping me find a new dream!

My favorite thing about Disney World was the time we got stuck on Splash Mountain for almost an hour, and the cart behind us was just directly in the sensor for the cackling vultures that send you off before you start climbing the "mountain", so for that whole hour all of the adults near me and my best friend had to listen to not only two overly excited and extremely loud 9 year olds who thought they were clever, but also said aforementioned cackling vultures.
Then when they finally gave up on fixing it and just decided to evacuate the ride, we got to see all of the animatronics from behind as we were led out of the darkened bowels of Splash Mountain. It was amazing.

There’s a ride next to the “eh” Nemo dark ride called turtle talk with crush and oh my god is it fun. Little kids ask crush questions and the crush talk and responds to them directly but like thru an animated screen. The crush voice actors are so into it and kids are so unpredictable, it’s just a grand old time.

I love Snow White's Wishing Well at Disneyland. It's just to the right of the castle, and no one ever seems to be there. It's kind of the perfect spot to relax a bit, toss a coin in (I think it goes to charity), and listen to Snow White sing to her dwarves.
So apparently Walt Disney was gifted these statues anonymously from Italy and he loved them, but unfortunately Snow White was the same height as the dwarves. He found a way to incorporate them anyway by placing her higher up than them, so forced perspective makes her look much taller.
I have no idea if there's a Disney world alternative next to Cinderella's Castle.

    10. Unlimited soda at the hotels, but only at the hotels.
    9. Riding the monorail through the Contemporary Resort Hotel.
    8. The absolutely terrible dessert you get for free by wearing a birthday pin. I got a cookie with whipped cream on it.
    7. That ride in Hollywood Studios where the ride operator has to interact with the animatronic villains from the movies and then a second operator shows up halfway through.
    6. The Enchanted Tiki Birds is never interesting but completely unskippable.
    5. Swiss Family Robinson treehouse, where you basically are in a line with some interesting props the whole way through.
    4. Character breakfasts as an adult couple with no kids.
    3. The Hall of Presidents, which even before our current administration was incredibly long and slow and weirdly exciting, waiting to see if Harding would cough or whatever.
    2. The Land tour, where you pay extra to be taken through the gardens where they grow a surprisingly large amount of lettuce served in EPCOT.
    1. Finding every penny-squishing machine in the park, where it costs 51cents for a souvenir you made yourself and will probably leave in the pile of change you’ve added to the tip for housekeeping.

(Because I couldn't be by myself, I was forced to ride things like Space Mountain and Tower of Terror regularly, and was gaslit constantly about whether it was ok for me to hate the experience as much as I did) and like... watching this video was so nostalgiac.
