Glad you enjoyed most of Na’vi River journey. I’ll pass that along to the team. We chose projected water in the Running Root scene as we call it for two reasons. The first is forced perspective. The waterfall is actually much closer to the ride vehicle than you think it is, but the scale of the projected water makes the feature appear much further distant. The second is running water is invisible under UV light. We used a very small amount of visible light to accent certain elements in the Canoe ride, but adding enough visible light to illuminate a water feature that large would foul the UV in that scene, as well as the ones before and after.
@Joe Cashman you should tell the team that they should paint all the dark ride ceilings with Vanta Black paint, that doesn’t allow light to hit. It would make the sky’s look much darker and harder to see. This could work for Pirates, The inside of the Mexican Pavilion, and other rides set at night and are inside
@@kitchensinkchronicles3272 From what I've seen I don't think it's a pepper's ghost; it looks like a clever use of projection mapping. Why? Because the skeleton doesn't perfectly align with the Jack Sparrow animatronic as the spotlight turns on. Either way it does seem like it belongs in this video though.
I utterly love that you took the time to talk about the “cars” in the London scene of Peter Pan. That effect has always stuck with me since first riding the ride as a kid.
They use it in the new Beauty and the Beast ride in Tokyo for the transition of the beat to the prince. I’ve seen a video of it and it’s pretty effective there, too.
As a former professional magician, I very much enjoyed this episode. Did you know there is a concept maquette used for the ballroom scene in the basement of the Magic Castle in Hollywood? One of my favorite things to show people when I go there. Also, would love a follow up to this video about illusions used in ride queues (like the lab scene in Flight of Passage.)
The Indiana Jones one really did blow my mind. It absolutely feels like the car moves backwards, and even though I've experienced that illusion in real life (parking the car just as the driver next to you starts to back out of their space & you slam on the brakes because you think your car didn't actually stop) I never would have guessed it was used to such fantastic effect on the ride.
My favorite forced perspective illusion is in the haunted mansion when you exit the attic onto the balcony and can see the graveyard below. The angle and placement of the various ghosts and effects makes the graveyard look massive and totally chaotic.
I think the effect in Storytime with Belle is incredibly effective, as it combines several different methods, including mirrors, to make a mirror become a doorway.
I think one of my favorite mirror effects actually is sadly new defunct.. Just before you dispatch on Indiana Jones Adventure there is a large wall of mirrors on the left hand side of the tunnel. When the door segment actually worked, the mirrors would move on the side of the wall to disguise the room moving positions for the next vehicle. The mirrors still remain to this day, but no longer move since the door feature is in B mode permantley. I hope one day this gets fixed in a way that it can be returned to it's former glory, it was such a small detail not everyone noticed because it was when your seatbelts were being checked.
I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that the fire effect in pirates is so good that, in an emergency where the lights turn on and you have to evacuate; they turn the effect off so it won't be mistaken for real fire
I heard a rumor (idk the story exactly) but that the flames looked so real that firefighters were called and I think the firefighters thought they were real too.
According to my Keys to the Kingdom tour guide, the metal thatching on the Tiki Room was because they couldn't find available/affordable authentic thatch artisans at the time (thatching has to be done to rigid and exacting standards to withstand the elements). When it came to creating Animal Kingdom, however, they were able to bring in real African thatch builders, and the roofs there are made of real straw thatch. It was pretty awesome to see her clang the metal "straw" of the Tiki Room roof, too.
You missed the Rei hologram effect from rise, pretty ingenious one. Also more mirrors... and I was actually able to bring the chamber of destiny effect to life in model form too. Sorely missed effect.
In the Peter Pan Ride- in the model of London, you may notice some "Clouds." The are actually just milky-translucent plastic garbage bags wadded up on the ground.
Another great video. My favorite illusion is the one that blew me away as a kid. I could not figure out how Disney got an entire pirate ship into the attractions. I remember floating between the ship and the fort being mesmerized and wondering if we were going to be hit by a cannon ball. In fact my imagination went into overdrive when telling friends about it and I said one landed in the boat and we had to get get it out. I was only 4 or 5 so cut me a little slack please.
Love your content and apologize if this has already been posted but the non-combustible thatch roof material is due to fire safety more so than anything structural in the building code. The building including whatever roof sheathing is beneath the superficial metal thatch material has been designed to withstand the wind tolerances dictated in the building code. I am an architect and do this evey day.
When I was last in DL, the Indiana Jones ride broke down while I was on it right as the ball got to the end of its movement. Lights came on and we sat there for 15 minutes or so. Was super cool to see things with the lights on, but also kinda strange to see how far the Boulder actually was, and to see Jones just dangling lifeless lol. We also got a cool super fast pass for our trouble that worked in any ride any time. Wish I would have kept the FP, as I've not been able to find a picture anywhere, seems like they are rare.
The pinocchio one with the fairy just standing behind you in the dark is absolutely nightmare fuel! I hate knowing there are things there but you cant see them, especially at the parks. I think that's what makes water and animatronics so terrifying for me.
I've always loved the illusion, if you can call it that, of the foggy night and trees on the outside of the conservatory window and outside the window in front of the piano at Walt Disney World. It's so creepy to go from bright sunshine and then look out a glass window at a dark, foggy night with twisted trees.
The cars in Peter pans flight reminds me of an effect from citizen Kane where they show a crowd but it’s really just a sheet with dot shaped holes in it with a light behind it

I think that waterfall is intended to look as if it’s much larger and far away. That would explain the reasoning behind the decision to use a projection.
Disney does need more chill boat rides. And walk through experiences. I love walking through Tom Sawyers island! It makes me feel like I am actually on an adventure!

That makes so much more sense. As someone who has bartended in that lighting, i can verify that moving liquidof any kind has to be watched veeeery closely to be seen. Its why most bartenders just " count the pour"
At 10:19, I’ve more often heard it pronounced “SMELL-ih-tie-zurrs” with four syllables, with an unstressed “tie” located between the second and final unstressed syllables “ih” and “zurrs” - but they could be wrong and you right, I don’t know… I’ve never even seen it spelled! 🤷♀️
I’ve always wanted to go to Disney World as a child, and swore I’d take my kids as a adult, but things just didn’t work out with me and my girls, but now that they are adults themselves, we sit and watch lots of videos, maybe one day in my lifetime I’ll be able to attend with my future grandchildren. Always seems like such a magical place!! ❤️
im late to the party but a lot of the same effects are on monster's inc!! there are mirrors in the door room scene and the locker room/bathroom scene similar to those at 8:14 to make those rooms look bigger, and the randal animatronic that disappears and reappears in the bathroom is similar to that at 2:14 or at 16:55, except the mirror is angled so you dont see your own reflection, you only see the randal animatronic be lit from behind the glass. Also, there's an example of pepper's ghost with the "beauty and the beast" rose in Be Our Guest restaurant in florida and in the beast's library in animation academy in california adventure (both roses use the same effects, I believe. It's some glass with a projection of a rose and sparkles around it, plus a music cue). also in the beast's library in ca, the fire place uses a mirror and puts a projection?? screen?? animation?? of fire on the logs. I would love to say the same effect is at be our guest, but I cant entirely be sure (im not from florida lmao). great video explanation!!
I think the fake waterfall in Navi River Journey is to avoid extra noise. Even just a little water falling is really loud in an enclosed space. Also, it reduces maintenance costs greatly as they don’t need an extra pump or plumbing.
I remembered seeing the hitchhiker ghost when I was a child, but the ride was a little different back then. It was actually sitting in the car next to me when I looked over, not just reflecting in the mirror.
I’d love to see you talk about the mirror from enchanted tales with belle. It’s one of my favorite effects & I go to that attraction just to see it. It’s a really cool piece of engineering!
I remember being 10 years old and seeing 🧚 the Blue Fairy 🧚 wooden figure behind the scenes surrounded by mirrors and not the actual illusion 😅, on Pinocchio’s Daring Journey in Disneyland Paris, summer 2006.
4:40 Me, a watcher/listener of Foolish Mortals: "it's gonna be that not waterfall-waterfall in Navi River Journey-heh, knew it." 11:53 Me, also a watcher of Attraction Labs: "oh the do-the i-the stationary rolling boulder, I know that one!"
Story time: One day, I was having a great day at Magic Kingdom. The line for The Haunted Mansion was short, so my sister and I went on it. I have been on it many times, but this time, when we passed the floating candle, I loud boom sounded and jump-scared everyone, which was a very funny yet terrifying experience.
5:04 I imagine they made this 'not waterfall-waterfall' so they're not constantly pumping water into the ride, which would regularly need to be pumped back out to regulate the water height. Pumping water is probably more expensive than a projection and bubbles.
Rey from Rise of Resistance. Another MIRROR!!! It’s set above the guests eye level so you don’t see your own reflection and gives the illusion of depth. Her “hologram” is projected on the mirror.
So the question on the hitch hiking ghosts that never gets answered on how it's done is how they keep the ghosts synced to the speed of the doom buggies all day long. It's got to be an actual mechanical connection,
Is nobody going to mention the lava illusion at Primeval World!? It's freaking aluminum foil wrapped around rollers with red light shining on them! You'll never un-see it again!!!
House of illusion, Haunted Mansion, there's footage out there of the early conception with Walt Disney and Rolly Crump. At the time of the footage, the working title was "Museum of the weird" and the way Walt phrases that title is absolutely priceless, he says overly dramatically "myooooooo-seum of the weeeird!" Lol
The giant Boulder traumatized me as a kid lol. My mom had said the Indiana Jones ride is like being in the theaters and just the seats move. I was like 5 or 6 years old back around 1996/1997. I went on and screamed when the Boulder came at me and shut my eyes. Then when I opened them everything was dark which made me freak out even more because I thought we had died 😂 never trusted my mom again.
In the Adventurers Club that used to be at Pleasure Island, they had a character named Beezle, a genie whose head appeared in a floating box in a cupboard. It was actually an actor sticking his head in from behind. The back of the cupboard was a mirror, which was actually larger than the cupboard, allowing the actor behind it to move it around without it looking like anything but the box was moving. Consequently, they had to keep the mirror as clean as possible so that the illusion couldn't be given away by a stain that moved with the box.
Alright everyone, pop quiz!

Great show
Fantastic stuff man. We were in Disney the last week in April. Family surprised us with VIP tour all day. Most magical experience of my life!
Another Peppers Ghost with mirrors: Rey in Rise of the Resistance? Next level stuff!
practical effects are so much cooler and more impressive than screens
I would love to say the same effect is at be our guest, but I cant entirely be sure (im not from florida lmao). great video explanation!!
nice video!! one of my favorite Disney illusions is the magic mirror/door in enchanted tales with belle!
I think the fake waterfall in Navi River Journey is to avoid extra noise. Even just a little water falling is really loud in an enclosed space.
Also, it reduces maintenance costs greatly as they don’t need an extra pump or plumbing.
I know this isn't Disney, but I'd love to hear your take on the Mosasaurus scene on the Jurassic World ride.
I remembered seeing the hitchhiker ghost when I was a child, but the ride was a little different back then. It was actually sitting in the car next to me when I looked over, not just reflecting in the mirror.
That's when Disney could afford to hire real ghosts...
4:40 Me, a watcher/listener of Foolish Mortals: "it's gonna be that not waterfall-waterfall in Navi River Journey-heh, knew it."
11:53 Me, also a watcher of Attraction Labs: "oh the do-the i-the stationary rolling boulder, I know that one!"
Ooooohh. I never got why the scrim in the graveyard scene was there. I guess it never really looked like fog to me
5:04 I imagine they made this 'not waterfall-waterfall' so they're not constantly pumping water into the ride, which would regularly need to be pumped back out to regulate the water height.
It's got to be an actual mechanical connection,
Yeah, I'd say an intertwined gear system under both tracks.
Is nobody going to mention the lava illusion at Primeval World!? It's freaking aluminum foil wrapped around rollers with red light shining on them! You'll never un-see it again!!!
Your videos never disappoint me as far as quality goes, you always do such a great job!
@14:09:
Me inside that room: *flute noises* COME WITH ME AND YOU'LL BE IN A WORLD OF PURE IMAGINATION-
I still need a Sinbad's Storybook adventure video! Please and thank.
