I love that Todd uses all of the drums and percussion instruments on a regular basis. Nothing he has is just for show. This guy means business. For Styx, I think it is the drums that really make this band a heavier rock band than with a more conservative drummer. I get that he is filling John’s old shoes. I do think that Todd not only filled them shoes, but also upgraded them to a serious pair of boots, of the ars kicking kind. Todd pays a very respectful tribute to John, and then goes on to making the job impossible to fill if ever there were a time when Todd considered leaving. Todd , you’ve gotten my vote, since the very first note. Thanks man.
As a musician myself, guitar player and ex drummer, you get to that point where whatever comes to your head is automatically transferred to your body. And that is when music becomes fun.I see that in your playing. p.s. Your drumming is fantastic.
I could not agree more. And sometimes the cymbals sound like fine China breaking and tinkling. What a fabulous sound where you are sitting Todd. The snare, like you said Bob dudeface, is some powerful crack.
Absolutely incredible. Nothing here that you wouldn't think " I could never play that. " But the feel, accuracy and how good that damn kit sounds is just unreal in all aspects. Very few could ever touch this guy.
Styx has been lifted from the Ash's, it's amazing that I only discovered Todd, last year and that he's been playing w/them for about 8yrs or so. I love his interpretation's of these classic songs from such a powerful band.
In reality he has been in the band since 1997. I saw the band live in 99, and numerous times since. He is a beast on the skins. Mad skills and passionate about his playing!!!
I will Never look at a Drummer the same way going forward because you Absolutely Kill it and it’s something we Can’t Appreciate with ALL the Other Activity. 👍
WhoDarestheMAN gamer To each his own captain of the super cool drumming experts. RUclips would have been bankrupt years ago if it weren’t for comment warriors such as yourself. 🖕🏼
WhoDarestheMAN gamer Aww... Did your feelings get hurt little boy? Keep editing your replies. I know it’s virtually impossible to get a complete thought out of that underpowered nugget you call a brain. Next time, remember if you have nothing nice to say, maybe stfu and move on. Love your playing Todd. Maybe one day you can be a real pro like this tool.
WhoDarestheMAN gamer I remember the first time I played a 4/4 beat too. You must be a learner thinking you’re great. Get back to your practice pad, little man.
For you non-drummers - his left hand is OVER the drumstick prior, then it's suddenly under. That's the difference. The grips determine the motion between a forearm motion, and a wrist motion. At about 1:27, notice his right forearm is moving, but only his left wrist is moving (not his left forearm), yet they are creating the same percussion. He's simply "flicking" his left wrist, but striking with his right forearm, yet they are totally in time. Notice all the power strikes come from his right hand... THAT is literally the art of this!
Love this angle and hearing the drums live! Just a little, tiny bit more audio of the songs would be nice. Just enough to know where in the song you are. Killer stuff, though! Thanks for sharing!
FWIW he stated in another video that he doesn't want the other musicians up too much in case they feel they didn't have a strong performance on that particular part of the song (I know... like there would be any concern with Styx). So it's a matter of him respecting his band mates.
Kick ass drummer, no doubt! My only feedback would be is that the songs could breathe more without the need to fill in every possible space with licks. You have truly changed the songs from originality.
OK TODD.... I'LL MAKE DEAL WITH YA.... 🤫...🤔... YOU, I mean, I can really see and tell how much it truly troubles you to play that specific set of Reference Pure's... so, you give them to me... keep the cymbals, they are a very special thing and it does take awhile to get just the right timbre from your cymbals, sometimes years before they all fall in place and play well, and "nice, nice" with each other, and those are special to you, Ohhh, I can tell that for sure!! But I love the way those little round noise makers sound, not too mention the finish...!!! They certainly make my Honey Amber Pro M's look.... well a bit like an "Orangy Sky," and they really should "be out with another guy...." "it's just a broken lullaby...!!" But to My Pro M's, if I have to, I will say, "Bye, bye love...!!" 🤔 It's a thought.... Right... Nooooo!!??!!?? Ohhhh....Kayyyy!! 😔 Happy Holidays... ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!! PEACE !!!!!!!!!!🤘🏼
That's my thoughts too, I'm not a massive fan of ringing Tom's tooooo much. I think Todd likes the big arena sound, very fat sound is what Todd prefers, from how hes talked about his playing generally.
apiece ofdirt Exactly! Tremendously technical musician covering a not so technical player in john ponazzo. I don't remember john playing any quads in any Styx songs. Same w guy who replaced Danny seraphine in Chicago. Danny had so many signature fills that he just does his own thing on .its disappointing. Your basically a tribute band drummer do it right we all can hear how good you are
Great way to learn drums. Wish there was a You Tube when I was a kid. Back then you paid some talent-less asshole $10 a half hour. You Tube has some of the best in the world showing you stuff for free. Take advantage of it...
Man if it wasn’t for this guy! I don’t know where Styx would be today as a band! Damn he’s awesome on the drums!
That ending though good lord. Guy doesn't miss a beat!
Todd is a top shelf drummer playing with a top shelf, all-time great band! Great to see them carrying on some 45 years, sounding as good as ever!
Todd Sucherman.
Blowing me away since 1996.

Ridiculous how good he is!!
Perfect base drum tempo at 1:20. My leg gets tired just listening to this.
He’s so fluid in his playing🙏
Every single time i see a new video of Todd he blows my mind, just...speechless
There's no way to describe his talent. It really inspires be to get better . And makes me so very jealous
As a musician myself, guitar player and ex drummer, you get to that point where whatever comes to your head is automatically transferred to your body. And that is when music becomes fun.I see that in your playing. p.s. Your drumming is fantastic.
At 1:03. That was sweet...so tight..friking amazing talent
Todd rocks this song. I love his full "beast mode" at the end of this clip. Incredibly clean playing.
Nice sound when you hit the snare and China together, it's like a gun shot.
I could not agree more. And sometimes the cymbals sound like fine China breaking and tinkling. What a fabulous sound where you are sitting Todd. The snare, like you said Bob dudeface, is some powerful crack.
How many different ways can I find to say "Amazing"? You are the man!
Extraordinary drummer!👍
That's a man's kit! LOVE that 6" tom. Perfect!
Poetry in motion.
Absolutely incredible. Nothing here that you wouldn't think " I could never play that. " But the feel, accuracy and how good that damn kit sounds is just unreal in all aspects. Very few could ever touch this guy.

Yes, Mr. Sucherman, reminded me on another post about his real Tenure w/Styx, I just know, Todd, is my new Bonzo.
I will Never look at a Drummer the same way going forward because you Absolutely Kill it and it’s something we Can’t Appreciate with ALL the Other Activity. 👍
I saw Todd play a Drum Clinic at PASIC in 2012, and he was hands down, incredible!
MONSTER!! Flawless chops!!!
One of the best...if not the best! What a monster!
A machine!! Awesome drummer😉
The splash work at 1:36.... You continue you to awe me.

I mean the splashwork is pretty straightforward. Makes it sound lovely though
Sucherman! what a cool name to say!
It’s just so well played... love it!!
Brilliant as always Sir!
Working it! Love watching you play!
I love getting the raw drum audio. Amazing sound.... great musicianship...
at the end i just yelled "oh fuck yeah" in my otherwise empty appartment.. this doesnt usually happen. holy moly i enjoyed this
Very talented and inspiring!!!
Beautiful !
I'm so glad this guy came to Drumeo. It led me here. Watching him play is inspirational.
Todd! you are such a badass on those drums!
At 1:06 - I love how he switches from matched grip to traditional grip like it's second-nature!
Wow! I love watching this guy!!
For you non-drummers - his left hand is OVER the drumstick prior, then it's suddenly under. That's the difference.

Then he switches back to matched grip at 2:13 for all the power strokes.
What a master!
Absolutamente sensacional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fucking incredible drumming Todd!! Always loved your drumming,so precise, blows me away!!
great stuff Todd!!!!!!
Damn he’s awesome!
Wow! Inspiring!
This kit sounds great
2:36 Just stunning hand foot combos. ✋🦶
Awesome!
Nice and clean= powerfull🙌🙌🙌
Such a long way away from the fresh faced kid in the Return To Paradise live video from 1996.
Sosossossososososo GREAT!
Amazing
I think this is the height of insane chops but 100% impeccably musical drumming.
Wow!
The man's scary great chops!
Genial!
I am anxious yo find out opnions of people who did dislike
This one is for your roadie 👊, who sets up this camera and mics in your videos.
Least it didn’t cut off before the best fills. Awesome
Fuck that ride bell is the stuff dreams are made of.
Slick!!!!
Hey Todd, just curious, have you ever had life in slow motion while your playing? I've only had it once... ??
And a little visit from Tommy Shaw....
2:36, incredible feet action
Yuuuuup. :)
I love the sound of that tone you pull from the bell on the ride. What cymbal is that pray tell ?
Sounds like a SABIAN 22” Chester Thompson “Liquid Ride”, brilliant finish.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Marc Colombo can you please post the video of you playing with Styx so we can see how it’s done?
What is that ride cymbal?
SABIAN 22″ Vault Precision Ride I think . Says that on his web page .
Yep Precision Ride. I asked on a FB video and he replied that that's what it was. He's a gear head and loves talking cymbals. Totally cool dude.
Talk about the right guy for the job or what!!
😃
😲
National laboratories use him to synchronize our atomic clocks.
I see 9 of y'all who can just bite me.
We’re not worthy.

Needs moon gell on toms,,,,

Extremely precise playing but if there was ever an example of overplaying it would be this. It’s like Buddy Rich playing with MC Hammer.
