I still love my Lexus GX 460!!! I actually bought mine after watching some RUclips videos (including yours). It's been running flawlessly, and I've also added a lift, wheels, tires, etc. A real joy to drive. 🤘
Smart move to buy the older GX. The new v35a engines are having major issues. Recalls from LX, Tundra, Sequioa. And it’s not just “debris”, they have main bearing issues etc
Love this. Owner of a 23 and already have 51k miles on my pig. Quiet, comfy, tank-like, and can also tow my boat and go on offroad camping trips. The ultimate do-all truck for me.
I bought a 23 precisely because of the NA V8 reliability and old-school solid build. I live in CT and I regularly get over 20 MPG. No highway driving, mostly rural. I bought two of the last V8 Tundras for my work for the same reason. I don't have to worry about my employees breaking down.

Man, that assessment about relaxed driving versus aggressive driving is so spot on. So interesting hearing the same startup chime I hear almost every day in one of your videos lol. The new GX is pretty darned cool, but I gotta say, I'd have a hard time getting it over this one. The V-8, the no-nonsense interior, the freakin' analog gauges - it's just what I want. 🥰
The whole oil change thing is so true. On my IS 500, I also have a 5,000 mile interval. The 2UR-GSE engine is weird though, and the dealership is most likely going to use a synthetic blend oil. So, I bring my own synthetic 5W-30 oil because I want to be able to drive it like I want and not worry about the oil life. I'm still doing 5,000-mile changes, though! But yeah, I had the same thing happen when I did my first oil change early to get the break-in crap out of there. "Well, technically you don't need to do this until 5,000 miles..." And on the wife's BMW, same thing. I'm sorry, I just don't buy it. 10,000 miles on the same oil with a boosted engine, driven by my lead-foot wife? No thank you. I will do 5,000.
4:38 This is the key reason why I'm seriously considering a GX. At the moment, I daily drive an ATS-V in the rural midwest. My commute is absolutely full of giant potholes, construction zones with giant bumps, etc. My poor magnetic ride struts are destroyed from it, and I'm tired of getting beat up in an otherwise comfortable car. I just want something that's stupid smooth. I'm old enough now, also, that the 500whp the ATS-V puts down with a tune is just ridiculous anywhere but a track, and I'm rarely driving it on a track. I have been considering something like an accord or a Jetta GLI, but the roads here are so terrible I'm not sure it'll be hugely better. Now the debate is whether I want a GX470 or GX460.
@@elonsus9747 I very nearly bought a 470 a couple years ago, but changed plans after the frame of my truck finally let go from many years of salty winter roads. I have leaned toward a 460 for daily driving comfort.
The fuel economy of the 460 is pretty great when its driven properly. Like you mentioned, coasting to slow down, looking ahead, keeping speed in check. Over 20 highway is never an issue for me. I thought I had an alignment issue as well, but had it aligned and still usually need to add some steering input. Good too see I'm not alone there. I do have some additional vibration in the steering but next thing is probably a tire balance.
Yeah, I had mine aligned 3 times within the first 1500 miles of ownership (23' GX Luxury bought in January of 24 new). The alignment is a lot better now after we had the dealership double check it and have the senior mechanic drive the car. But it's still not perfect and I've come to the conclusion that some amount of steering correction is just necessary.
I absolutely adore my GX460. I’ll NEVER have kids but I love having all of these seats for having friends in the car for road trips. I can always seat 5 of my friends comfortably in here with no loss of power driving in high altitude areas and ski/beach stuff. @Tedward these are also great for driving on the beach in Ptown
I have driven a lot of GX460's and they all pull in one direction or the other. So, me being the person I am I've done lots of research on this. The tracking issue you're experiencing has to do with suspension geometry, primarily kingpin offset or what they call "scrub radius" which is the distance from the steering axis to the center of the tire. To reduce the kingpin offset the lower control arms in the new GX550 are quite a bit longer than the GX460's. This makes the new GX track more on center than the old GX, it also reduces kickback in the steering. The longer lower control arms also create a more stable "on center feel" and increases the strength of the "return to center" characteristic while eliminating the pulling to one side or the other with the crown of the road. The reason I went so deep into this is because I have a 200 series Land Cruiser and my dad has a GX460 that I drove 3000 miles about a year ago. My Land Cruiser consistently stays dead center no matter what lane I'm in, eventually it drifts a little but all cars do. The GX felt like if I was in the left lane it was constantly pulling to the left, if I was in the right lane it was constantly pulling to the right which made my 3000 miles tiring. The road had to be completely flat for it to track straight. I actually stopped to get the alignment inspected because I thought something was wrong, but they just confirmed everything was in specification. During my research this also led me to discover my Land Cruiser has longer lower control arms and the Tundra has even longer ones. Land Cruiser drivers have actually swapped control arms in favor of the Tundra control arms to give more suspension travel if they have lifted their Land Cruiser.
Does this GX460 pulling issue also affect the 5th (current) gen 4Runner? Also, is there a fix or something you can do to reduce or eliminate the pulling issue on the GX. Thanks!
@@michaelllewellyn4441 I'm really not sure about the 4Runner. The fix would be changing the lower control arms and supporting hardware to adjust the kingpin offset. I'm sure there is something on the GX 4Runner forums about this. Hope that helps, and good luck!
The cost of fuel is categorized as a "reliability tax". I am a real estate agent and daily my GX at +/-16mpg. I have only had to do routine maintenance and I'm almost at 100K on the odometer. This is a forever car!
Tedward I’m in sync with your experience. Also mine seemed to pull to the right more than I thought it should. After I got some miles on the tires and properly inflated them it was neutral, still sensitive to the curvature of the road surface as you say. I feel like my GX is happy at 75 and is relaxing to drive at that speed. It just doesn’t seem like a vehicle built to drive faster than 80. And I get 20 mpg. I believe the KDSS lean affects models with the air suspension. Which I don’t have. Or you either I believe. Coils all the way baby!
Bought mine in December and have just over 10k. Love it especially on long drives. Ha! I did the same thing as you - I’m a much calmer driver - comfort, plenty of power and not super maneuverable = relaxed driving ! Great review
17.5 mpg long term. 21.5 on long drives. Also - I changed oil at 1500 and at 5K and 10k. Now every 5K and they use Lexus Oil (surprised). Like you I’m figuring an easy 400k
Agree with you about oil changes. Changed my 23 460 at 1800 and then 3000. Next May it will get changed again with whatever miles it has...Likely 4000.
I noticed that pull to the left with my 23 wrx and figured it was the road too along with the fast rack. I drove it for about 9 months that way and finally got a bug up my ass to get it checked. Subaru did an alignment at no charge to me and did see that it was out. But that first alignment didn't do anything. Regardless of how the road was banked slightly I was always pulling to the right. 2 months later (this last may) I had them check it again (again no charge to me) and they seem to have fixed the issue (measurements showed pretty much the same misalignment). But I do notice now when I did a drive to Taos from Tucson that the pull was now lane dependent like what you experienced. Dose the GX have a fast rack? Are gone the days when you can expect your wheel to be centered on a straight road?
many vehicles if not most will pull to the right ( in the USA) ESPECIALLY if your in the right hand lane for two reasons; 1) the slope from the center to the right side is from gravity and 2) a safety factor from the manufacturer while in a two lane road for avoiding drifting into oncoming traffic in the other lane.
They sell a spare tire kit for the Type R, that was the FIRST thing i bought after i bought the car. No effing way was i gonna be effing around with a tire goo pack, and pump.

When I was younger my cousin's dad had a 2011 GX460 we took a all day road trip up and down Dominican Republic. I fucking loved that thing plush leather seats and ice cold AC and simply chewed up the miles. My goal is to own one at some point idk when. But like you said I want something that will eat up miles and do it reliably and comfortably.
Hey, I've got that same model, with the red seats. Picked it up on Dec 23rd, at a big discount, because they wanted to clear the yard of the '23s, to make room for the '24s. I've got about 9,000 on it now. But you're thinking about the miles wrong. You're supposed to go for high score.
You had a new sonic gray civic si, I had one too. You have a fancy japanese SUV with red leather interior? I do, too. We're brothers from other mothers lol. I looked at the GX but ended up with an Acura instead. It didnt feel as antiquated to me. Anyway. Love your videos, as always.
Yeah they say the same thing for my car (16,000 kms or once a year) but I do it every 6 months which works out to about 7,000kms. Good peace of mind and a great selling point later on down the line. Even if I'm wasting money doing it every 6 months I'd rather waste some money than waste an engine.
I agree with your analogy mostly....I've been changing the oil in my '97 Toyota T100 5VZ-FE V6 cyl ONCE A YEAR f or 22 years without a problem and not even uses any oil in 5,000 miles....now with 198,000 miles!
Couldn’t agree more with this review. Don’t like the GX550’s interior-looks more Toyota than Lexus. The 460 eats miles in quiet comfort, and is old school in so many ways. Newer isn’t always better!
As far as fuel economy goes with trucks a lot of people are stuck in 2005, thinking they all get 10pmg. My 10 year old Denali with a 6.2 V8 will get 18 in the city and easily over 20 on the highway. On a 2 lane 55-65mph backroad I can get 24-26. I don't understand these new super complex V6 powertrains that get marginally better fuel economy. High risk for low reward.
The GX gas Acoustic laminated glass. Not dual paned glass. I have a 2023 GX as well as just finished a 3,255 mile road trip from TX to CA and back last week. I experienced the same MPGs and speed variance as you. My best guess was 22.1 MPG going 80mph avg on cruise in West Texas. I also have the Bridgestone Duelers which I don’t really care for. Great assessment! 👍🏽
2:08 Ted, ever since I started watching your content, I have been giving thumbs up to people who, I feel, drive cool cars. I just never understand why they don't at least acknowledge you. It makes no damn sense!
I own a 2019 GX460. Two things people don't talk about enough are the KDSS (which you did briefly touch on) causing constant adjusting of the steering wheel on the highway to keep it going straight and the seat comfort (they are made for short Japanese people). I get horrible back pain after 2-3 hours (5'10" tall). The lumbar isn't in the right spot/seat shape. I bet your shoulders are higher/above the seat back cushion. Nice vehicle otherwise though. Quiet and surprisingly good gas mileage on the highway roadtrips.
I'm waiting on 2022+ GX to lower in price and then I'll swing for one. I really want a Land Cruiser but those are outrageous in terms of their price and mileage. I could get a relatively new GX with waaay less miles for the same price
If we’re being honest You could probably leave it for a couple years and be fine. But once a year is a good way to keep track if you don’t drive enough
@@TedwardDrives Thank you for the reply! If I wanted that larger vehicle and if we are strictly talking about ride quality, is the lx570 noticeably smoother? I've been torn for a while as you were the reason I started this Lexus journey in the first place and I feel like since theyre both exceptional, it comes down to preference and maybe a slight bump in ride quality? I will mainly be using it as a passenger vehicle and highway cruiser
Current looking for my next car to replace my 2015 Genesis which has been great. Need a better family vehicle. Looking at a 2022 GX and a 2022 Acura MDX. Both around 25k-40k miles. Anything I should look for or any concerns with both? Clearly slightly different use cases but want it for 10 years
i get about 14.5-15mpg driving 90-95mph in west texas in the high desert with elevations ranging 1200-2500ft running 33" tires with 3" lift. I don't even care that i get 14mpg lol
About the tire "noises". Im not sure if you said they are different tires from stock, but did you ever hear any weird squeaks when you put them on? I have a 10th gen civic SI and just put new tires on. Before there was NO noises at all. The day I put new ones on it I'm hearing a weird squeaking noise from about 15-30. Its quiet and subtle but it drives me insane cause im a freak like that and hear every little noise. Maybe I just need to break them in 😅
And that’s what the new Prado in SEA and GX lost Agree on your turbo diesel point of view. Check out the Toyota Fortuner Q variant 2023-24 model and unless the turbo four pot hybrid can do more miles than that then what justifies the price?
traded in 22 4R for 23 GX for similar reasons, but I am not sure it's as reliable as the 4R V6. Reading a lot of owners of GX having to fix valley plate coolant leaks around 100k which is not cheap and timing chain leaks. I'm not sure if these issues were fixed for the 22-23 model year otherwise, plan on a few thousand dollars in repairs.
@@TedwardDrives Your money so your choice completely! You just mentioned doing a lot of highway commuting so I'm somewhat confused why a GX460 would make a good highway commuter at barely 20mpg while using premium fuel.
I want to trade my 2021 ES 350 F-Sport for one of this, but the MPG is the holding point, I’m getting an average of 28mpg now, I can not go to 21 or 22, and GX if I’m not mistaken take only premium. But I love the GX V8
Did they actually change the oil. I don't trust the dealers. I do all my oil changes. I only have 30 thousand on my 22 GX and I do them every 5000, but did the first at 3000. The slight drifting is usually more due to the crown on the roadways. Mine has developed a slight vibration that I feel in the seat mostly. Driving me insane. dealer says it's nothing and did a road force balance that didn't help.
Drove the GX550. So disappointing in many ways. The hood rattles while driving. Suspension not so great. Try to shut the door from a feet away and listen to the sound. It rattles like a barn door. I’m so glad I bought the 2023 GX460. The last V8 with a lot nicer interior and more quality.

This is a forever car!
not sure it applies to later models
Your Lexus is such a cozy car ❤
Love from New York City 🇺🇲 ❤️
Agree with you about oil changes. Changed my 23 460 at 1800 and then 3000. Next May it will get changed again with whatever miles it has...Likely 4000.
Well said, my GX calms me down as well. I drive like a grandma now which is fine, I’m just enjoying my car 😂.
You need a 958 Cayenne Diesel my friend!!! Amazing highway burner. Love all the road trips in the GX
Same experience here but until you change the air filter for a K&N. More torque and almost 10% thirstier but awesome on roadtrips.
The reason I will always drive under 1000k, in the first year, so I get the 1 year oil change, a 10,000k first oil change is crazy!
good morning tedward! cool truck too
Amazing car! One of the best Lexus have ever released. I'm jealous, because we don't get these in most EU countries.
Can’t wait to get one at the end of the year. Hopefully prices and interest rates are lower.
They sell a spare tire kit for the Type R, that was the FIRST thing i bought after i bought the car. No effing way was i gonna be effing around with a tire goo pack, and pump.
Where did you get it? I want one
@@TedwardDrives Honda dealership.
The kit comes in 2 parts.
Part #06421-TGH-A33ZA Which is the Wheel
Part#: 42751-CTL-039 which is the tire
I paid $371 including tax
I have an FK8, but i gotta imagine the FL5 one is the same.
Happy to hear you're enjoying your new Lexus. Hopefully, it'll give you many more miles of trouble-free dailying, unlike its TTV6 variant.
It is recommended also to change the oil every 6 months as well. So you do not have to hit 5k
How did you negotiate the price down, any tips?
Love that steering wheel
Me too!!
When are we going to get more dashcam clips? If you have enough a compilation video would be awesome!
My ITS scares the hell out of me driving it on the stock 19 inch wheels with the 265/30/19. I switched wheels to 18x9.5 so I can run a 265/35/18.
This definitely is a quality car 👌
As far as fuel economy goes with trucks a lot of people are stuck in 2005, thinking they all get 10pmg. My 10 year old Denali with a 6.2 V8 will get 18 in the city and easily over 20 on the highway. On a 2 lane 55-65mph backroad I can get 24-26. I don't understand these new super complex V6 powertrains that get marginally better fuel economy. High risk for low reward.
Was never about fuel economy. All about emissions.
Dude! I didn't know it had a sunglasses holder! Thought it was solely used for a kids mirror 😂 thanks man for unintentionally helping me out lol.
THIS! I ran out to my GX to test 😂
It makes no damn sense!
perhaps they do not see you doing that most likely or they are not sure what your intentions are.
I own a 19 GX460 and love it. Also own a 2017 Shelby GT350R with 315 series Michelin Cup 2 tires. No way your getting a spare for that!
Love my GX too!
Nice ride Ted!
What kind of watch are you wearing? Love your videos!
It’s a Garmin 965! Link in bio
@@TedwardDrives You're the man! Thanks so much for responding!!
I'm waiting on 2022+ GX to lower in price and then I'll swing for one. I really want a Land Cruiser but those are outrageous in terms of their price and mileage. I could get a relatively new GX with waaay less miles for the same price
Haha I live around there, funny to see this stretch of the thruway on RUclips 😂
Do you thnk regardless of mileage on the oil you should do it once a year or does age matter for synthetic?
It’s a good idea to change the oil at least once a year regardless of mileage or the type.
If we’re being honest You could probably leave it for a couple years and be fine. But once a year is a good way to keep track if you don’t drive enough
I agree with BOTH chriscoulson5365 and TedwardDrives!
What do you think about the lx570? What made you pick the gx460?
The lx was too big for my needs and it’s a lottt more expensive
@@TedwardDrives Thank you for the reply! If I wanted that larger vehicle and if we are strictly talking about ride quality, is the lx570 noticeably smoother? I've been torn for a while as you were the reason I started this Lexus journey in the first place and I feel like since theyre both exceptional, it comes down to preference and maybe a slight bump in ride quality? I will mainly be using it as a passenger vehicle and highway cruiser
I should've got one of these but I was late so I got the 4runner last of the breed too 😂
Current looking for my next car to replace my 2015 Genesis which has been great. Need a better family vehicle. Looking at a 2022 GX and a 2022 Acura MDX. Both around 25k-40k miles. Anything I should look for or any concerns with both? Clearly slightly different use cases but want it for 10 years
Love it. Gorgeous vehicle.👍
I wonder, can you find a lotus carlton? That would be hell of a fun
i get about 14.5-15mpg driving 90-95mph in west texas in the high desert with elevations ranging 1200-2500ft running 33" tires with 3" lift.
Maybe I just need to break them in 😅
And that’s what the new Prado in SEA and GX lost
Agree on your turbo diesel point of view.
I'm not sure if these issues were fixed for the 22-23 model year otherwise, plan on a few thousand dollars in repairs.
if you are conscious of these things...then prepare a budget...plan the work-work the plan!
Got a 2023 GX 460 with 7K miles, getting it undercoated soon & looking into cheap mods lol
beneficial mods are ...side rails/steps and skid plates. The lifts and oversized tires increase fuel usage way too much.
@@beerhunt9013 thanks for the advice!
10K miles for a first oil change would make me feel super uncomfortable as well.
Great video! We chatted irl once and he was super nice as well. Keep up the amazing work!
Would you ever sell your 3 enthusiast cars to help fund a GT3 and do a 2 car garage with the GX?
lol that Malibu is totally tailgating you
My Ls430 also reads about 2 mph faster than I'm actually going
My 96’ LS400 gets about 17-18mpg highway if I can swing it
Do you have to use premium or can you get away with regular? Thanks
many GX 460 owners have/are using 87 octane...it is your call.
I think an Outback XT would be a good choice for you. AWD and can go over potholes/light offroading while being better on gas than the GX.
🤮. No way. I have the right car
@@TedwardDrives Your money so your choice completely! You just mentioned doing a lot of highway commuting so I'm somewhat confused why a GX460 would make a good highway commuter at barely 20mpg while using premium fuel.
I have both. He's right
@@megharper5077which “he”?
Tedward. 460 is so comfortable and quiet compared to the Subaru, and mileage is not terrible if you drive reasonably@mrbsutube5081
I want to trade my 2021 ES 350 F-Sport for one of this, but the MPG is the holding point, I’m getting an average of 28mpg now, I can not go to 21 or 22, and GX if I’m not mistaken take only premium. But I love the GX V8
Get what you love....if it ain't what you expected you can always sell it easily! Many GX 460 owners use 87 octane gas.
The most first world video haha. Still interesting :D
Hope you’re joking. RUclips is full of supercar owners and I’m driving a Lexus.
Do you hear beeping a sound when you’re taking off around 2-5mph?
Nope
Did they actually change the oil. I don't trust the dealers. I do all my oil changes. I only have 30 thousand on my 22 GX and I do them every 5000, but did the first at 3000. The slight drifting is usually more due to the crown on the roadways. Mine has developed a slight vibration that I feel in the seat mostly. Driving me insane. dealer says it's nothing and did a road force balance that didn't help.
They better have since I Paid for it!
When are you going to drive GX 550?
He cannot drive the GX 550 because it has been recalled
I would love that SUV for long trips. So comfy!! Just don't show me the bumper with bloody mosquitoes.
Nice first impression. /s
Ur in a Toyota, u don’t need to do your oil changes in quicker intervals.
What type of person should own this car. I have the money to buy cash but the gas is what is stopping me.
Nice!
8:24, I don’t follow. My GX happily cruises at 90.
everyone has opinions/ideas and mothers...it is up to you how you want to drive!
