This is just how I played Pokémon as a kid, starter vastly out leveling the rest of the Pokémon on my team and heavily relying on potions/revives in battle
Ironically I slowly stopped doing this in Platinum, where other than Torterra I also started using Porygon. I don't even remember how I evolved it into Porygon2 and Z considering I've never had friends, but I could never forget my first non-starter companion
We delayed for the glaceon, but did it do anything significant by the end? All the other pokemon are so low-leveled that I can't imagine their coverage really mattered.
Right? Absolute bruh moment on Stuhpy's part, when he doesn't use the Glaceon he evolved _specifically_ for "coverage in the late game"...despite it hard-countering half of Cynthia's team (4x against Garchomp with Blizzard can even outright one-shot it, and Glaceon is 2x against Roserade and Cynthia's Togekiss). Honestly, the guy hypes up his Pokémon and makes it sound like they'll all contribute, just to use them as little more than meat-shields for the sake of making his Empoleon and Lucario the stars of the show...and I'm saying this as someone who _likes_ Empoleon and Lucario, too.
This challenge clearly has no planning. Several times within the video you can tell he first does stuff, then thinks about whether that was the right play. The concept is interesting but the execution is very subpar.
Love this idea! Takes "gift only" runs to a new level. Gen 4 does have a lot of gift Pokemon (DP would have also given Happiny at the cost of Togepi, a worthy trade imo), but games that have game corner Pokemon might be interesting as well. Actually, this run might be perfect in BDSP with the updated experience mechanics to have equal team leveling for the limited experience points. Might even be possible as a Nuzlocke, hmm... You've given me some ideas!
@@Idontplaytf2 Togekiss is Normal/Flying before Gen 6, the first pure Flying type was not introduced until Tornadus in Gen 5, and Blissey is always one of the most broken Pokemon - to the point where many Nuzlockers ban it in their playthroughs.
DP would've lost Eevee and Togepi whish isn't worthwhile because Eevee can fill almost any role you'd need, especially Jolteon's ability to cripple a massive threat with a fast Twave.
5:00 Hey if you or anyone else does a challenge like this, remember that you can overwrite hm moves with one another to save attack slots, this takes longer whenever you need to swap but it helps with challenges like these where your pokemon selection is limited
I used to pick up low level Pokemon from my PC and run through the entire region with my Vs. Seeker to "replay" the game Never even found a shiny in 500 hours of play haha
I think it would’ve made more sense to evolve your Eevee into an Espeon since your team has a huge weakness to fighting types and only Togekiss can tank a fighting attack and even then it takes neutral damage to fighting moves.
So you grabbed glaceon for type coverage which was ice, but empoleon can learn icebeam and blizzard. When you got to the e4 you should have move deleted the hms and actually gave empoleon a viable moveset. Using surf on roserade just looked painful.
I didnt even think about deleting them after I reached e4, theres a few ways I could have done the challenge a lot more efficiently in hindsight, it was my first ever challenge run of any game so I was just kinda winging it the whole time haha definitely need to do more research next time
@@stuhpy As far as first challenge runs go, this was really good! Unless I missed something, you could have also used Choice Specs to boost your Impoleon's damage output or Quick Claw (available even before the first badge) to have a decent chance at taking out Garchomp without it doing anything to you. Other than that, super interesting run and well done!
Oh god There was this one trainer I used to bully endlessly with the VS seeker as a child. I didn’t know how to progress the story (couldn’t speak english lol) so I just fought him over and over and over again. I still remember what he looks like, where he stands, and what team he had.
I don't have nearly as many good things to say about newer Pokemon games but I will say the newer games do give a lot of early Pokemon & getting rid of HM moves was a good move. Also it would've been a good idea to teach Empoleon ice beam
I was literally in the midst of typing "Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't you farm trainer battles for XP by deliberately losing on the last pokemon of a trainer with more than one?" when he said that he was reloading the last save even when he lost for real to avoid being unfair to the challenge intent
Turtwig is my fav of all Pokemon. He was my first choice back then, when I had no idea what Pokemon is even about. It never let my down and is the reason why I still enjoy Pokemon.
Ice Beam + Shuca Berry on Empoleon might have worked against Garchomp. Still happy you didn't take anything to make the challenge easier xp-wise, and only resorted to VS seeker at the very end - good video man !
What I would've done differently is: after reaching the elite 4 go back to the move deleter to delete hm's & go underground for heart scales for the move relearner to get empoleon some moves back.
You could have picked up the Choice Specs which would have trivialised many of the difficult bits. Spamming specs surf from an overleveled Emp is the glitchless speedrun route for platinum I think
Awesome video, just wondering instead of using the vs seeker to get xp, could you have used charm/scary face from togekiss and bastiodon to debuff garchomp and teach empoleon blizzard? Assuming you wouldn't have enough hp fo finish the rest of the team, but yeah. Great video
You didn't mention the seven-stars restaurant at Hotel Grand Lake, by the Valor Lakefront... I'm assuming you thought it'd be unfair to use for leveling?
...he didn't use the Glaceon as anything more than a meat-shield for his Empoleon and Lucario, unfortunately. I know, I'm disappointed too, especially since he evolved Eevee into it specifically for coverage and then didn't _use_ that coverage, even though Glaceon counters an entire half of Cynthia's team.
Haven't watched the video yet but I'm thinking Infernape+Vaporeon is a good way to do this. They get all the necessary HMs between them, and you could teach Vaporeon Ice Beam to help against Garchomp. Speedrunners battle with just their starter in most Pokemon games, so the question of it being possible is mostly just down to HMs.
I feel like once you get the VS Seeker you can just rematch trainers to grind and train, no? I think those would not count as wild Pokemon Edit: Omg I just got to the part where you used the VS Seeker
thinking we should start calling mods/challenges without wild pokemon an 'Orre challenge' since the two Orre games lacked normal wild pokemon encounters (yes, XD had pokespots, but that's a more limited thing than typical wilds)
But you ended it before the most important thing. Did you get the National Pokédex? I'm curious about whether you can get a National Pokédex in Platinum without wild encounters? You need to see 210 Pokémon to get the National Dex. How many did you see at the end?
4 minutes in and the second you hit the grass gym my thought was "couldn't he just level by repeatedly knocking out 1 or 2 mons and dying to the final in certain trainer fights. Interested to see if that becomes relevant.
Could have been better. A lot of people have pointed out that you hyped up things only to just... not use them, using them only as meat shields. It's an interesting idea but fell flat in execution. The item spam felt a bit cheap as well.
You said turtwig was your favorite before the run but I find that my favorite starter changes with whichever I did a run with last 😭 so anyways I was wondering if piplup has become your favorite now?
I really dont get It why not evolving porygon. Like they gave you all the necessary, if you play on a Nintendo 3ds okay its comprensible but if you play on emulator, there are a ton of way to evolve him
