I keep getting comments so just to clarify: The title is referring to the Level 75 Barry fight in Pokemon Platinum. There is also a Level 85 Barry fight in Pokemon Platinum that you unlock after entering the Hall of Fame 20 times. If you think you battled the Level 75 Barry fight as a kid, you did not, as it is not accessible in the game without ACE or hacking. You might be mixing it up with Diamond/Pearl's harder Barry fight which is Level 74. This D/P fight also requires 20 Hall of Fames. This is all explained in the video. I definitely should have been more clear in the intro so more people would either watch through or realize which specific fight I'm talking about in the title immediately. I was planning to offer $1000 to anyone who could prove to me they unlocked the Level 75 Barry fight to drive home the point, but since ACE exists you could fake it and I wouldn't be able to tell 😔. The unlock method of this fight sounds so much like a rumor you would hear on the playground as a child. It‘s so much in line with stuff like: ”You have to beat the Elite 4 X times to unlock mew/deoxys/Arceus/a Pokemon your classmate just made up“

Rumor on the playground says you can unlock CharVenuToise if you beat Elite Four Gary's final pokemon by using a Explosion with a level 69 Graveler, then go to mewtwo and use every HM before you enter the battle. You will instead fight and can catch CharVenuToise!
Barry was probably the best "Friend" rival in the series. It's the only one that really captured the actual tone of that type of rivalry with someone you are friends with, yet still genuinely competitive towards. Felt the closest to the type of talk directed between actual pvp battles between my friends and I.
I don't know man I think all the rivals kind of blow. None of them take the league challenge the full way. Blue is the only rival to keep pace with you and actually beat the league. Every game after theres a set champion and your rival ALWAYS drops out of the league challenge. I'd say Blue is the only good tue rival because he's the only one that takes it all the way.

I remember I GRINDED the elite 4 as a kid and got over 50 completions of the hall of fame. I noticed that Barry’s team had gotten stronger but i thought that just naturally happened as time went on
Exactly what I thought. I kind of just played the pokemon league for fun to try to get all my pokemon to level 100 and I must have beat it like 35 times when I was a kid. At a certain point, everything knew that I found, I just happened upon. I didnt know that the whole heatran thing existed until like three years after I started playing lol.
Beat that shit over 80 times as a kid so I could make a bunch of mons level 100, I would be excited to fave level 80 Barry because that was free exp, then going into battle zone for more free exp lol

I did ACE in my Pokémon Gold VC to give myself infinite rare candies with Quagsire, which I *think* needed Pokémon with moves which were easiest to get with Quagsire.
Fun fact: In the Resort Area, someone gifts you a Villa without furnishings. To unlock certain furnishings you need to meet conditions like planting a number of berries or hatching a number of eggs. For the piano you need to win the Pokémon League 10 times, after you get the furnishing Cynthia will visit you on occasion and her theme plays when you talk with the Piano. Back when I played Platinum I wanted to have all the furnishings, but all of them together cost a lot (even more than you can hold at once). So I decided to battle trainers with an Amulet Coin to gain the necessary funds. Because of that I ended up looping the Pokémon League, way more than 10 times. Too bad that I restarted my game (after trading all my Pokemon to Soul Silver). I would really like to check how strong the rival was at the end.

Yes, this has been documented before, but an *extremely* small minority of people have heard of it, since the resources to find this information bury it under loads of other, more pertinent information. It's about the level 70 Barry fight that is, in the official games, unused, but that many people assume was supposed to be a middleground. He talks about the level 85 fight in the beginning to give us background information.

Barry was great rival, he was always a step a head, he was friendly but he wasn’t a push over. His erraticness made his battles during the main story unexpected and when i was a kid i lost to him a few times. Love him he was a consistent rival
Good points but I also appreciate Barry a lot because he reminds me of my childhood best friend in appearance and personality :) And the way he drags the player along to his wild 'adventure' at the start of the game brings me back to childhood when we frequently did the same thing... I feel horrible for not talking to my old friend for years and telling him about his similarities to the character...
I guess this looks impressive compared to the rivals in like gens 6-8 but this sounds like a real low bar tbh, especially when resorting to scraping the bottom of the barrel for a compliment like consistent. Like Blue comes with the unexpected appearances and being a step ahead shtick but doesn't have the annoying "I'm gonna fine you!" tic and hyperactive gimmick.

You know what’s crazy, when I was a kid I loved platinum. I had done everything I could in that game having close to aroundd 800 hours on it. I kept fighting the elite four multiple times because I thought it was the coolest thing. I fought this Barry fight and years later I didn’t even know it was a secret fight.
Fun fact, Nemona in the Pecharunt post-dlc content now has the highest AVERAGE level of an opponent. Red still has the highest single mon with the 88 Pikachu, but his team's average level is lower as Pikachu is quite a bit above his others.
I just checked out your Remote Code Execution video and even that seems incredible to me. I’m curious, where do you even learn to code something like that? I’ve studied game programming at my local community college but it was all using Unity and I’m starting to get more interested in modifying existing games and learning their inner workings.
@@Klaxynd I started with purely playing around with memory editors and programming scripts, then go a degree in industrial engineering/computer science. Reverse engineering and hacking is something I just taught myself through videos, documentation and trial and error really. Most reverse engineers I know are people who are just passionate about breaking/understanding games and kept doing it.
Having played my Platinum save file since Christmas 2009, I may give ACE a shot if there are no drawbacks to try a true 100% completion. Thanks for the video on this obscure gen 4 battle, love these kinds of videos!
Going into this with only the "knowledge" that the two additional battles are unlocked by entering the Hall of Fame 10 times (the one with his team leveled up by 10 levels) and 20 times (the one with his team leveled up by 20 times; famously, at the time, this beat the record of "highest leveled Trainer-owned mon outside a battle facility" that Red's level 81 Pikachu set all the way back in GS). As Pokemon Pearl was my first Pokémon Main Game I owned myself and Pokémon Platinum my second, I played the Sinnoh games for 3 years until I bought HeartGold. I naturally did the Pokémon league dozens of times in Pearl and Platinum. So, the Berry level 85 fight was something totally normal for me and always fought against him on Saturday. I even used the underground glitch to spawn inside him. Man, I miss my childhood.

I have been playing Platinum a lot lately, and I was wondering why the Rival's levels didn't increase after I had beaten the Elite Four 10 times in total. Then I stumbled upon this, which explains everything. Thanks for making this video!

The sad thing is that I probably would've unlocked this as I always farmed the Elite Four for money so that I could afford the expensive stuff in the Villa. I'm really sad that the Diamond and Pearl remakes didn't include any of Platinum's content. What were they thinking?
I unlocked his highest level team in Pearl. Pearl was legit the only game I had for over 4 years. I played it until the time stopped at 999:59, and more. I never knew it was related to the HoF total. I've beaten it exactly 50 times on that save.
As a tcrf reader I live and die for stupidly niche information like this, and Platinum is my favorite mainline game! Thank you for making content like this and pioneering gen 4 research in 2024.
I didn't rechallenge the Sinnoh Elite Four until recently, and it was only to unlock the last piece of furniture I needed to complete my Villa. I was even able to buy the Ribbon Syndicate Ribbons for my Battle Frontier Garchomp.
funny enough i used to run the hall of fame to level up my pokemon, using a team of 4 and 2 random pokemon to level. if i walked around a little more as a kid i mightve found this battle myself, no luck however. cool video!
Watching clips of these games reminds me of why I couldn’t get into them. The animations and battle speed are super slow and there’s performance issues they corrected with Gen 5, which I played before 4 so it was a real struggle to get through.
I did the highest level version of this fight as a kid on my copy of Platinum; had no clue it was so special. I remember logging on and always feeling the need to beat everyone in the house/barry. I had no idea not many people had seen his level 80 fight. Gen 4 with HGSS and Platinum was really peak pokemon
I remembered barry levels getting higher. I beat the hall of fame on platinum a ton of times to unlock the cynthia piano in the resort area, and that his mon levels were higher than what I remembered
I love gen 4 so much. Its my first pokemon and the aesthetics and nostalgia is heavenly. We have the arceus lore, without us pokemon wouldnt exist. Gen 4 so much that i only use sinnoh pokemon in every game
I like how back in the day the Platinum health bar speeds were seen as this amazing boost compared to Diamond and Pearl, but after another 15 years of Pokemon games, even Platinum's speed feels pretty damn slow. Hell, I remember it feeling slow even once BW rolled out.
Im gonna have to verify this on the weekend when barry is around again rather than manipulate in game clock, but as a kid with only platinum as my physical game, I just enjoyed smashing through the league just for the fun of it, so im very certain this fight was unlocked for me cause i also frequented that battle resort place where we fight all those familiar faces. Platinum really just remains my favorite, and yes thats with bias included too lmao.
Barry was one of -- and unfortunately the last of -- two friendly-ish rivals that were genuinely threatening, with the other being May/Brendan. In fact, Gen 4 was pretty much the last Gen to have had threatening rivals with the questionable reboot that was Gen 5; why they did that reboot and how they went about it still eludes me and baffles me to this very day, especially as it set the stage for every single Gen since.
@@snailcakes9119 Wally was pretty much a pushover outside of Victory Road, yes, and May & Brendan did indeed not get a fight with their starter's second evolution until the remake, but back in Ruby & Sapphire their starters also jumped from Lvl 5 base form to Lvl 20 first evolution, so it was pretty threatening in a surprising way. Funny, now that I'm reading it out loud, it looks like they made May and Brendan peak in the mid game so that Wally could take their place at the end; well at least ORAS made all three justice... at the cost of the Battle Frontier... 😔
Pearl/Platinum was when I discovered EV training, and the best exp post EV at least in my eyes was the E4 so i'd grind through to max its level. Put so much work into that game lol when I saw this video I thought it'd be something new but like many others are saying, it was naturally unlocked for me.

Having played my Platinum save file since Christmas 2009, I may give ACE a shot if there are no drawbacks to try a true 100% completion. Thanks for the video on this obscure gen 4 battle, love these kinds of videos!
Going into this with only the "knowledge" that the two additional battles are unlocked by entering the Hall of Fame 10 times (the one with his team leveled up by 10 levels) and 20 times (the one with his team leveled up by 20 times; famously, at the time, this beat the record of "highest leveled Trainer-owned mon outside a battle facility" that Red's level 81 Pikachu set all the way back in GS). This'll be a good watch!

As Pokemon Pearl was my first Pokémon Main Game I owned myself and Pokémon Platinum my second, I played the Sinnoh games for 3 years until I bought HeartGold. I naturally did the Pokémon league dozens of times in Pearl and Platinum. So, the Berry level 85 fight was something totally normal for me and always fought against him on Saturday. I even used the underground glitch to spawn inside him.

The sad thing is that I probably would've unlocked this as I always farmed the Elite Four for money so that I could afford the expensive stuff in the Villa. I'm really sad that the Diamond and Pearl remakes didn't include any of Platinum's content. What were they thinking?

I unlocked his highest level team in Pearl. Pearl was legit the only game I had for over 4 years. I played it until the time stopped at 999:59, and more.
I never knew it was related to the HoF total. I've beaten it exactly 50 times on that save.

I didn't rechallenge the Sinnoh Elite Four until recently, and it was only to unlock the last piece of furniture I needed to complete my Villa. I was even able to buy the Ribbon Syndicate Ribbons for my Battle Frontier Garchomp.

funny enough i used to run the hall of fame to level up my pokemon, using a team of 4 and 2 random pokemon to level. if i walked around a little more as a kid i mightve found this battle myself, no luck however. cool video!
Watching clips of these games reminds me of why I couldn’t get into them. The animations and battle speed are super slow and there’s performance issues they corrected with Gen 5, which I played before 4 so it was a real struggle to get through.
I feel like the real life equivalent here would be to somehow code your Tamagochi to bend reality.

I did the highest level version of this fight as a kid on my copy of Platinum; had no clue it was so special. I remember logging on and always feeling the need to beat everyone in the house/barry. I had no idea not many people had seen his level 80 fight. Gen 4 with HGSS and Platinum was really peak pokemon
I remembered barry levels getting higher. I beat the hall of fame on platinum a ton of times to unlock the cynthia piano in the resort area, and that his mon levels were higher than what I remembered

I like how back in the day the Platinum health bar speeds were seen as this amazing boost compared to Diamond and Pearl, but after another 15 years of Pokemon games, even Platinum's speed feels pretty damn slow. Hell, I remember it feeling slow even once BW rolled out.

Im gonna have to verify this on the weekend when barry is around again rather than manipulate in game clock, but as a kid with only platinum as my physical game, I just enjoyed smashing through the league just for the fun of it, so im very certain this fight was unlocked for me cause i also frequented that battle resort place where we fight all those familiar faces. Platinum really just remains my favorite, and yes thats with bias included too lmao.
Gamefreak honestly put so much more effort than we origionally thought. Makes us appticiate the old titles now even more somehow.
Barry was one of -- and unfortunately the last of -- two friendly-ish rivals that were genuinely threatening, with the other being May/Brendan.
In fact, Gen 4 was pretty much the last Gen to have had threatening rivals with the questionable reboot that was Gen 5; why they did that reboot and how they went about it still eludes me and baffles me to this very day, especially as it set the stage for every single Gen since.

Wally was pretty much a pushover outside of Victory Road, yes, and May & Brendan did indeed not get a fight with their starter's second evolution until the remake, but back in Ruby & Sapphire their starters also jumped from Lvl 5 base form to Lvl 20 first evolution, so it was pretty threatening in a surprising way.
Funny, now that I'm reading it out loud, it looks like they made May and Brendan peak in the mid game so that Wally could take their place at the end; well at least ORAS made all three justice... at the cost of the Battle Frontier... 😔

Pearl/Platinum was when I discovered EV training, and the best exp post EV at least in my eyes was the E4 so i'd grind through to max its level. Put so much work into that game lol when I saw this video I thought it'd be something new but like many others are saying, it was naturally unlocked for me.
Well this is good information to know since I started playing Platinum on an emulator
