- In the video, I'll be attempting to complete a full game of Pokemon while not encountering any wild Pokemon. If I see a single wild Pokemon, I will restart the run from the beginning. Is this even possible? Can I beat this Hardcore challenge? Watch the video to find out!
This is not a Nuzlocke, as you will see. My only goal was to beat the game without seeing any wild Pokemon.

I say this challenge was successful. At the end it didn't say "A wild Zekrom appeared" but it says "Zekrom appeared" so it isn't a wild pokemon
I would also like to add to this with the fact that when you get a fossil Pokémon it is basically the same thing, you created the Pokémon from an item, and formally put it into a Pokémon for you to own it, so technically Zekrom is just a legendary fossil Pokémon you get to chose what ball it goes into
Agreed. Catching a pokemon does not mean it was necessarily a wild battle. In the gamecube games you could catch pokemon in trainer battles. 'Wild Pokemon' just means 'random encounters', and this encounter was not random.
I say it's unsuccesfull, because he clearly wrote in the tittle "not SEEING a wild pokemon". He clearly saw the wild pokemon the professor was catching, because it appeared on the screen ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(But if we don't include that, Zecrom is not wild, so you won)
Why no plume fossil?
Just fyi, they started making this distinction starting in G5 for certain special encounters.
Ryan put a Starly in the thumbnail because he never had the chance to learn which wild Pokémon live in Unova.
Perfect comment
Yes
gen 5 and its pokemon are too trash to be put in a thumbnail, it's a disgrace and a mistake of the franchise.

That shiny Minccino was a sign of good things to come
or a sign of mockery from the professor herself saying, why do you torture yourself like this
The fact that the game specifically didn't use the word "wild" when Zekrom appeared is a good enough argument for me. You did indeed complete the game without meeting a wild Pokémon. Congratulations!
Keep in mind that canonically Zekrom is TRAINED, both Zekrom and Reshiram had previous trainers.
@@autistic_potato1037
Yep, very good point. All the more reason this challenge was a success!
He beat it without *catching* a wild Pokémon, but failed to beat it without *seeing* a wild Pokémon, his actual goal. He saw the wild Pokémon the professor caught at the beginning.

It's not wild, it's a trade.
It's a fossil
@@djt08031996 That's more accurate. I think it's basically a fossil that doesn't need a machine to be restored.

Well there's a reason he takes such high risks, it's because he has a fool proof plan.
Nah it's kinda dumb. Just reset
I literally did a double take. Wild.
During the majority of the video, I was wondering if the Zekrom encounter would make the whole challenge null but when the "Zekrom appeared" text popped up, I was laughing that the Devs inadvertently saved your run by making a unique battle text.
Wow!
Was half expecting a Pokémon coliseum joke at the beginning as even if you tried there are no wild Pokémon to encounter in that game

POKETUBERS NEED TO STOP BREAKING STORY ASPECTS.
I believe this could also be done in Platinum? The starter fight with the Starly is removed and Giratina’s text says “The Distortion World’s Giratina appeared.” I can’t think of any other forced wild encounters.
probably hard due to the large amount of HMs, but totally doable! you could cover everything with a torterra or infernape and a vaporeon, though! cut/rock smash/rock climb on the starter and surf/waterfall/strength on the vee. you could even remove rock smash and cut via the move deleter when you get to him in canalave since they're optional past the early game, or just delete rock smash and move it to the vaporeon if you want to keep all the required HMs to access more items and trainers for money and xp. you could even evolve a togepi into togetic for fly and defog with almost no xp required - just raise its friendship by running first. the only hurdle i anticipate is gardenia's gym and the galactic base in eterna being hard with a solo grotle or roark's gym being hard for a solo monferno, respectively - even if the latter can evolve it needs a fairly significant level advantage to sweep on its own
@@TigeriPlaysGames don't you get lots of free pokemon in platinum too?
@@Malam_NightYoru you can get an infinite amount of fossil Pokémon when you reach eterna city
Gen 1, FRLG/LGPE, Gen 2 and Emerald are all possible because there's no forced Legendary encounters. I don't remember if BW2 forced you to fight the Swords or Justice.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 Kanto is not possible in gen 1 or the gen 3 remake due to Snorlax and Marowak. RSE is not possible as you are forced to battle a wild pokemon when you select your starter. I am unsure about GSC or HGSS.
I think you completed the spirit of the run, even if Zekrom is a small asterisk on it. Well done, I'm impressed this was achievable.
I'd argue Zekrom isn't wild by technicality over the "Zekrom appeared" line the moment I saw your game choice. I'd say Nebby from Gen 7 works too, but I can't remember if there are static encounters there.
Also I was wondering why you wouldn't get the Archen fossil all the way back until I remember Archen can't fly before evolving ahah.
Good job! I'd say it's a success. Though I'd agree with some other comments I found that safe states should be allowed next time.
Alola has the Totems. While the encounter text don't says "wild xxx appeared", I'm pretty sure that other NPCs say they are wild Mons. (Also they call regular Mons for help)
The first patch of grass in sun and moon forces a wild encounter, and getting your starter in ultra sun and ultra moon has you fighting a wild pokemon as well.
But you could throw Archen in the daycare and level it up until it would evolve.
Why is no one talking about gen 1 it doesn't have any mandatory legendaries and the catching tutorial is optional
@@NaveenKumar_M Gen 1 has Snorlax as a mandatory wild Pokémon. Similar in Gen 2 with a mandatory Sudowoodo.
Wild or not, an endgame legendary you're required to fight/capture to serve the plot line of the game is arguably just a minor asterisk. You avoided every other possible scenario, well done!!

I would absolutely argue that the run is a success. If I can be a lore nerd for a moment, both Reshiram and Zekrom have had a "trainer" (in a relatively loose sense) in the Twin Heroes of Legend. The twins battled for their beliefs, using the pokemon as their "champions" as it were, which sounds a lot like a Pokemon battle with different stakes. I'd say, the Twins of Legend should count as Original Trainers, and you are just on the receiving end of a trade made through millennia. The "Zekrom Appeared" being different from every other pokemon battle text means that they (GameFreak) had to have thought about this, and made the conscious decision that Zekrom is not wild, and changed the battle text accordingly.
This is absolutely insane. My jaw dropped when I realised your tactics to deliberately faint and get yourself back to that Pokemon center. You sir are a genius at this stuff. I've loved your channel for ages and I have no doubt you'll keep making amazing content 😍
Pokemon Black and White emphasize their story first and foremost. There's hints to the lore scattered throughout flavor text, and one of the most prominent is actually available in... Castelia City, I believe. Probably because the Relic Castle is right nearby. There's an NPC in the Art Gallery that discusses the Tao Trio's origins, and it states that Zekrom and Reshiram were both owned by trainers previously. This is why Zekrom and Reshiram are shiny-locked and why they are not referred to as wild. They are static components in a story. And by technicality, even though they "disappeared" on their trainers, they were never officially released to the wild.
technically, you could avoid the zekrom encounter by filling your box and party entirely with other pokemon. If you do this, zekrom will actually leave and you can encounter them later at dragonspiral tower. The next question is, how do you fill your box without wild encounters? If two of your pokemon happen to be compatible with breeding (i'm too lazy to check your available pokemon's egg groups, sorry), you could fill the box with eggs. In the past you could've used dream world to get pokemon there (i think), or you could trade with another game to get a ditto or compatible pokemon (but that could be considered cheating)
You still have to encounter and kill Zekrom
All monkeys and starters are in the Field egg group. They are compatible provided you get a male and female
Damn I can't believe I never thought of this. Time to redo the run with this rule applied!
...joking but I also wouldn't mind it
breeding is mentioned? oh no...

Kanto games have the Snorlax blockade.
Johto games have the Sudowoodo blockade.
Hoenn games have the Poochyena/Zigzagoon right after you pick your starter.
Sinnoh games except Platinum have the Starly right after you pick your starter.
B2W2 has the Crustle blockade.
X & Y has the Snorlax blockade.
Alola games have many required wild encounters in trials.
Sword & Shield has required wild Pokemon encounters in the 3rd Gym.
Legends Arceus also has many required wild encounters to rank up to unlock new areas.
Scarlet & Violet has the required wild encounters in Area Zero.
That leaves Platinum and Blaclk & White as the only Pokemon games that you could complete without finding any wild Pokemon.
Fun fact: You can indeed complete Black and White with only exp from trainer battles, even if you have a full team of six with balanced levels, because of how the exp system works.
No, I was thinking "Why does he pronounce Zekrom like that?"
Zekrom, Zebstrika, and most of the city names.
Cool thing. There is an already solved example where Heart Gold / Soul Silver players manipulate the rng seed by starting on a specific frame
A Sans "no-hit" doesn't count the forced damage in the end, so I'd say you accomplished the mission anyway.
If you evolved Larvesta, it could learn fly which would let you fast travel without dying.
could also revive archen instead of tirtouga and evolve it into archeops, which requires far less grinding (obtained at level 25 and evolves at level 37)
@@Alphabet576But you can only grind on trainers that would mean Sammurott would be at a lower level like level 55-65 i think cause the experience would go to archen not samurott
@@Damarpw7 imo insofar as this is an issue with using archeops it's a much bigger problem with using volcarona
Larvesta evolves at level 59
No shot
@@Damarpw7I think there’s enough wiggle room since bw uses level scaled exp, so what would be 50 exp for a level 60 Samurott would be like 2000 exp for a level 25 archen
Also with 3 Pokémon as early as nimbasa you can just grind the battle subway for infinite rare candies lol
"This tree at the dreamyard is required"
In fact, that's the only required HM use in BW. Makes you wonder why they even bothered with it.
Also yeah, in a run like this especially, but in general, it's funny how the game constantly tells you how important a balanced team is, but in the first 5 gens, it's much faster, more efficient, and easier to just put all the exp, EVs and TMs into one pokémon instead of spreading them out over 6. (TMs in the first 4).
even if the zekrom "counts" as a wild encounter, it's still impressive to beat the game with only ONE wild encounter, and that encounter is forced anyway. this video was really cool!
You never got the message "A Wild Pokemon Appeared" so I say challenge success!!
7:30 Due to the cubic experience function and the level based experience calculation in generation five, number of battles that result in a level 70 Samurott would be the same number of battles required to have a level 64 Samurott and level 64 Pansear, and that number of battles would be about 4x as much as getting a level 45 Samurott and level 45 Pansear.
I wouldn't count Zekrom as a wild Pokemon in this case. Honestly, most challenges start with asterisks at the beginning. "The run starts after you get your starter." "HM slaves don't count." Stuff like that. Not that that's a problem, but the fact that you didn't do that is already super impressive to me, even if Zekrom does count as wild.
The moment you choose oshawatt was the moment you gained my respect. He is the best boi
Zekrom wasn't a wild Pokemon. You burst into his house and forced him into a tiny ball.
I would simply close my eyes whenever a wild Pokemon was about to appear
I might be blanking on it, but I don’t think there’s a forced wild encounter in fire red/leaf green. Even with HM’s being an issue charmanders line learns the required cut and strength, and you can buy the magikarp and evolve it for surf
Update I completely forgot about Snorlax
There is also the ghost in Pokémon Tower
Cold storage has no wild Pokémon inside the building
You sold me with your explanation of why Zekrom doesn't count as a wild encounter. If the game doesn't say "A wild Zekrom appeared!" then it's not a wild encounter.
The editing on this one was great. Really above and beyond. Hope to see another letter-based Nuzlocke soon!
Personally, with Zekrom being a REQUIRED catch, I don't know why they didn't just add it directly to your party.
To trick children into using the Master Ball on a catch rate 25 mon instead of an actually difficult legendary

So there's another Pokemon battle.
You could theoretically skip the long walk back by evolving archen into archeops and teaching it fly. However that would take more effort exp balancing and thus more strategy than lol just hit it really hard
Was so offended that you picked tourtuga after complaint about not being able to use fly- but then looked it up and found out that Archen can’t use fly. Arceops can but it evolves at level 37 so that’s a mute point
Love the idea. Good video.
Your voice almost gives ai. It’s so monotone and droning. The few times you show emotion, are way more captivating. I know it’s old but
Zekrom isn't wild because the game doesn't call it as such. Pretty open and shut case. I don't think the argument for thinking it's a wild encounter is nearly as persuasive as the argument for it not being wild.
Technically you could count Zekrom as a gift because the dark stone was given to you
It seems that saying "[legendary pokemon] appeared" is something they devs decided to do from gen 5 onward, so I wouldn't count that as a reason to think it's not wild.
However, I will still choose to believe it's not wild simply because of the Orb, as it's basically like an egg at that point. Any pokemon that hatches needs a pokeball from the get go, so battling it is just a special way of catching your "hatched" legendary.
Really clever choice of this game to avoid absolutely every wild encounter compared to the other games btw
I suppose death warping is fine and sturdy might come in handy (though you have more than 2 gift mons for switch fodder you might been multiple switch folders in one fight)
My mind ofc first went for Archeops to have fly
Ah yes, ZEEKRUM
This was a fun challenge run. Pokémon White bug spray edition.
Definitely a success btw. The game didn't classify Zekrom as a wild Pokémon.
I feel like, if you told someone in the actual region that you'd become Champion of that region without ever meeting a single wild Pokemon, they'd scoff and say "that's ridiculous, SURELY you met one at SOME point", and then you said "well I guess I technically encountered the Zekrom I was carrying around in my backpack, but I don't know if it was wild... does that count?", they would look at you like you were insane.
What I'm saying is, yes, that challenge was successful.
This man DOES realize that he could've grinded his other pokemon in the Daycare without encounters, right?
What would be the point? He'd have to risk a lot of encounters going back to the daycare to retrieve the Pokemon, and he didn't actually need a second Pokemon to fight. The others all served support roles.
@@jedimasterpickle3 You don't have to go in the tall grass to gain XP from the daycare.
It only counts steps.
In fact, since this is Unova, you could just beeline straight from the daycare to the bridge to Castelia without touching a single patch of tall grass.
@@kinglyzebra6417 The bridge is a risky spot because of the shadows. Any step could have a Pokemon encounter. And for what? A Simisear? A Carracosta? This challenge heavily featured minimizing potential encounter spots, hence blacking out on Route 17 to warp back to Icarus City. What's the point of having to make more trips through risky areas that aren't needed?
@@jedimasterpickle3 leveling up his other Pokemon.
And my point about the bridge is that there's plenty of encounter-free space available by the Day Care.
@@kinglyzebra6417 Why does he need to level his other Pokemon when his starter swept the game? The other Pokemon he got did their job just fine without being at a level to actually fight. And the bridge is not encounter free. Each step could have a shadow spawn, and each shadow could contain a Pokemon
Me, playing Colloseum: ... What's a *wild* pokemon?
I love how ironic this challenge being done in black and white is, considering the evil team wants to "liberate" pokemon from their trainers.
Not sure about this generation but in the third gen you were able to use cut out of battle to cut tall grass. Would have been tidious for sure but also cheaper
Yeah but you also encounter a wild Pokémon when you get your starter, and later Wild Kecleon with the Silph Scope. And in FRLG you have to encounter Snorlax.
@@jjcelever never meant to do this challenge in these games, but if you Could cut the grass in 5th gen he could have saved money (more of a funfact than a serious advice)
I am not 100% on this, but iirc cutting tall grass was removed in gen4 and onward

well Zeekrom is definitely not a valid wild encounter, Zekrom on the other hand can be argued to be 😬
in all seriousness, it definitely doesn't count as one, so this run is 100% valid
I admit, I thought going into this that Zekrom was going to count against you, but the fact that it doesn't call Zekrom "wild" in the text when you encounter it (which I hadn't known would be the case until you said so) convinced me. Valid run. Zero wild pokemon encounters. Complete success.

Currently only on the first few minutes so you may address it, but technically if the only rule is to beat “a Pokémon game” without seeing a wild Pokémon, you could just play coliseum. XD: gale of darkness might work too but I can’t remember if you’re forced into battling a wild Pokémon when poke spots are introduced
I think the run was valid and zekrom was not wild, but I would have liked to see you beat N and Ghetsis without using it.

I also feel bad for that mayan-shao
You can avoid having to catch Zekrom if your boxes are all full. However, I don’t know how you would fill your boxes, since you can’t just catch stuff. I’m also not sure if it avoids the fight.
The way you roleplayed getting into this challenge was awesome
You definitely completed the challenge. It didn’t say wild Pokémon appear, and you have to get him to complete the game. The spirit of the challenge was complete at worst. But I say 100% successful.
Gold, Silver, and Emerald (you just talk to Rayquaza, you don't actually battle it) have no mandatory static encounters. Every other game has a box legendary or road block (like Snorlax in Kanto) preventing you from finishing the game.
Don't forget sudowoodo in the johto games
Gold and Silver have Sudowoodo and Emerald you first battle is against a wild pokemon.
Great video man, crazy challenges.
Nah you already have Zekrom you're just putting it in a proper ball, challenge success
I say you win. That was very cool run!🤩
Your creativity is unmatched.
This is an interesting new challenge, and you did really good.
I'd say the challenge technically was not completed, since zekrom is considered uncaught and as such wild imho. However, if the spirit of the challenge is to avoid every optional wild encounters that aren't mandated without the use of save states or save reloading to ignore any occurrences, then I'd say it was a surprising big success. Congrats on the success for atleast the spirit of the challenge.
I think a potential interesting alternative to pull this off (though I understand why many might not want to do this) would be a mod. static encounters that block your path either just don't exist, or disappear when you get the key item. there is a safe path through every patch of grass, or no grass at all (would make dodging the grass with barry back in gen 4 funny). wild legendaries either don't exist, or have a different message instead of "a wild ___ appeared". Would definitely be a tough game even with the avoiding wild battles part, but it would be an interesting experience.
100% successful. Good work
it never states that the Zekrom is wild so id say it doesnt count
Subbed for the dedication
The rude at the beginning made me laugh so hard
Maybe Sword and Shield could've been a better call for this challenge? Since wild encounters are less RNG-based and easier to avoid... plus, you only have to fight the Legendary wolf in the postgame, so the only Pokémon that could be counted as "wild" is the uncatchable Eternatus
This Challenge was succesful, aslong as you have fun bro
I believe pokemon firered and leafgreen would be perfect for this challenge. You can buy a magikarp at the pokemon center at the foot of MT. Moon, gyarados make a strong early game partner and later a good hm slave. Other pokemon you can get in the game without encountering them in the grass is:
Gift pokemon: 1 of 3 starter pkmn, eevee, hitmonlee or hitmonchan, lapras, omanyte or kabuto, aerodactyl and togepi.
Overworld encounters/interactable: snorlax, electrode, hypno, the three legendary birds and mewtwo
And also i almost forgot to mention the game corner ones being: abra, clefairy, scyther (exclusive to firered), pinsir (exclusive to leafgreen), dratini and porygon. I also wanna mention that if you buy an abra at the game-corner, you can also trade it for a
mr. mime 👍😊
I would say you completed the challenge, as Zekrom is not referred to as "wild" at any point. For other legendary or mythical Pokémon, like Cobalion or Victini, the game just says "name of Pokémon appeared!", but then when they attack or faint, they are still referred to as "wild name of Pokémon", this however, is not the case for Zekrom or Reshiram (The same is also true for Xerneas and Yveltal in X and Y, and Solgaleo and Lunala in Sun and Moon, and I think Necrozma in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon).
I swear I say this every time I see an upload from you- it's only a matter of time before you blow up. The amount of work you put into all your runs is insane, unlike a lot of larger poketubers.
i don't think i ever thought of the gen 5 dragons as wild pokemon (because i hate legendries and only ever catch them for pokedex 😂). they really didn't ""exist"" until the plot demanded them to, unlike gen 4 where you show up and they're already in existence. or in gen 3, where the legendries are fighting, and you have to go make rayquaza stop kyogre & groudon from fighting
21:05 yeah, but moves like surf and fly are actually kinda good/decent in battle, as surf hits both targets in double battles and has good base power, and fly gives you a turn of invincibility.
In gen 1, you are required to fight at least one Snorlax and the ghost of Marowak
In gen 2, you are required to fight the red Gyarados and the Snorlax
In gen 3, you are faced with the Pokémon harrassing Birch
In Diamond and Pearl, you are attacked by a Starly; this is not the case in Platinum, however you must fight a wild Giratina towards the endgame.
B&W forces you to catch the box legend. i forget what's required in b2w2 but i know fused kyurem is wild
Every generation after that has at least one scripted wild encounter
Personally I don't really care about the specifics of a challenge.
A challenge is successful if it increases the difficulty and presents interesting and refreshing puzzles.
And in that sense, I want claim this was quite the successful run.
As for the interpretation of the word "wild". It could mean at least one of the following scenarios:
1. Lives in a non-domesticated fashion, and is roaming freely in an area. (Many legendaries are not "free" in the sense that they have a job in the environment)
2. It has not been claimed by any trainer before. (Means eggs and fossils also would be illegal)
3. It is referred to by the game as "wild". (Only trainers and maybe some forced encounters are legal)
4. It could be caught in a pokeball. (Only trainers and maybe some forced encounters are legal)
5. It is part of a random selection of pokemon to meet in the area. (Excludes legendaries, except roamers and forced encounters)
