Rules for this challenge:
- When I beat a trainer, I must immediately steal their team.
- Pokemon from trainers must match the levels, abilities, movesets, and exact statistics of the Pokemon
- If the trainer used items, you may use the same items while using their team
- No fighting wild Pokemon to gain levels
- Must play on Set Mode
- Can re-organize the team how I see fit
This is not a Nuzlocke and battles were re-fought and save states were used. This is a challenge to determine if this is possible at all.
Special thanks to the Pokemon Emerald Speedrunning community for the information. The spreadsheet I used with trainer data can be found here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Part 2 of this challenge is out now: ruclips.net/video/wrksA7j1u48/видео.html
This is like that guy who traded a paperclip until he was able to trade for a house.
Scammed by the marill pic instead of wingull on the hidden power guessing game
Nooo omg 🙈 Yes it should be Wingull instead of Marill, and fighting is not very effective against flying type. Here come all the comments lol
@@RylockesI mean, it would still be accurate if you’d done this in ORAS, since Fairy also resists Fighting
@@Rylockes oh my god I spent so long thinking and the only answer I came to was Steel type but there's no Steel type in Gen 3 😭
@@dazeen9591 that's gen 1. There were several steel types by gen 3 already
@@pipoledo Steel wasn't in Gen 1.
This video ended up being over an hour long, so I decided to split it into two parts! Part 2 will be out next week!
That's a lot of research throughout the playthrough
Okay
Did you research this first to see if it was possible or did you just jump in and figure the problems out as you went?
Would love to see this done in platinum! Awesome video
Bruh just upload the video in its entirety next time, blueballing like this is super shitty.
Ryan: Hiker Mike
Me, quietly: Hiker Miker
15:32 Fighting should be neutral against Marill in Gen 3, Because Fairy didn't exist back then and Marill was a pure Water type until Gen 6.
Yeah i was confused for a bit too but he put a picture of marill there instead of wingull
it should be steel
@ink0rp3r4ted5 fire resists steel so no, he meant to put a picture of wingull in there instead of marill. If you go back and look, he has a wingull on his team
I’m so glad someone asked this
Mentioned this is another comment, but I accidentally put a picture of Marill instead of Wingull. It was not very effective on Wingull’s flying type, making it Hidden Power Fighting!
This would honestly make for such a fun game in and of itself.
I mean, there’s Pokémon Rocket but that’s not quite the same.
Poor Tabitha. His parents must have really hated him to give him a confusing name like that.
Maybe it was his chosen name
And people complain about the ORAS character design changes. Nobody would ever confuse fat Tabitha for a girl.
Oh this has me hooked, I already know I want to see this on Platinum or other games, and this Emerald run isn’t even finished yet
I appreciate being open about it taking multiple attempts takes to defeat some opponents - I think it would be interesting to learn exactly how many times it took in some cases, or at least if some took longer to defeat than others.
Edit: Of course I had to post this with only 6 minutes left in the video, right before you went into more detail about the savestates and such. While I'm personally curious exactly how many resets some fights took, that discussion was basically what I was curious about! Thanks for going into that.
Would be so cool if it were like "yeah this fight is a 5% winrate and this fight is a 15% winrate, meaning the whole run is a 0.8% chance to happen."
I like to think that whenever you beat a trainer you just swap Pokemon afterwards. Like Brandon's now got a Level 6 Mudkip and whatnot.
I'm getting deja vu... hasn't someone done this exact thing before?
Smallant did it in Crystal!
I got tripped up by the marill replacing the wingull when trying to figure it out lol 😂
I still don't get it 🥲
@@emilymonkey because wingull was part flying type that’s how he was able to tell the hidden power.
Yeah I was like Marill is water/fairy type but wait did fairy exist back then no it didn’t so no can’t be fighting so confused lol
@@kitten8444 yess though!
This is one of the best challenge concepts ever. Can't wait for the rest!
I want to see this challenge in USUM becauseI think it would be fun using all of the randomly strong NPCs' Pokémon, which those games have more of than most. You could even use totems and the allies they call as an interesting twist.
Waaaaah didn't expect that ending, I just thought it was going to be impossible, the end. Such a cool concept! I'm definitely hyped for the follow up!
Love the concept! Your videos are always so interesting 😊
I appreciate all the effort that goes into these challenge videos, having to get footage of all the failed attempts. I especially love this type of challenge and look forward to part 2! Hope to see this type of challenge for other games, would love to see a Platinum version of this challenge
haven't finished the video yet but I can tell this will be a fun one to watch. It would be cool if your player sprite in the overworld also changed to the trainer you last beat.
Awesome video. Looking forward to part 2. Not sure if you do gen 1 or 2 content but i think those games would be neat.
An absolute banger of an idea and a high quality video. Just when I thought I've seen all the different challenges. Definitely subbing for this keep it up!
Ryan you're such a cool dude! With all your raps, you're freaking talented! I thought it wasn't possible this challenge when I saw the video time, but I 'm so glad it has a continue! Thanks! This challenge is freaking cool! A very difficult one too!!
Bro the idea is just awesome, big probs! And also very nice editing, keep up the great work ✌
Love your videos as always!!! This one in particular is very interesting though. From other comments, apparently this has been done before, but it’s new to me.
Pro tip: random trainers in the older games always have 0 IVS, meaning the HP type will always be Fighting
This idea is so much fun! And kudos to you for going through with it! I'd love to see you try it with Sinnoh or Unova!
Loved the video. Very interesting idea
can't wait for part 2
Posted 4 minutes ago? Nice, I love your videos because they always have quite a lot of strategy and interesting problem solving
We need Atsign to turn this into an actual mod, would be beyond cool.
Didn’t atsign already made the mod for SmallAnt?
He already did. Small ant did this already.
I would love to see this in platinum or B&W!! Especially in B&W, challenging N with an elite four team to then take N's team to face Ghetsis, i think that would be so cool
Ryan, the quality of these recent nuzlockes are so good and fun to watch. I will always be amazed that you dont even have 100k subs, you deserve a million subs tbh, i love your videos. Your nuzlockes are realy different from others and thats why i like them ❤
You, my good sir, deserve so much more popularity for your creative challenges
You spiderversed us 😂
This is a very fun logic puzzle of a challenge lol. Would love to see it attempted in B2W2! (Bonus points if it's challenge mode!)
I CANT WAIT
Smallant did this (on a different game-crystal, I think?) using a mod that automatically gave him the teams of people he beat, and that turned off their XP/EV gain. I think he commissioned the mod from a guy named Atsign? I have no idea what Atsign's rates are---if not too bad, maybe you could save yourself a lot of PKhacks time by asking him to repeat it for any games you want to do this with?
I'm guessing the reason you took Jody's Zangoose was not just for the Zangoose itself, but also for the item Jody had. Neither Bulbapedia nor Serebii are showing me Jody's moveset or what item she had and I don't feel like digging up more detailed info rn, but I'm guessing she had an X Attack since she was in the Strength Room. For that matter actually, I bet that Zangoose knows Swords Dance.
Aaa that cliffhanger!
Would like to see this in black/white or black/white2 since i remember those trainer teams being pretty good actually
7:13 For these guys, shouldn't you get the Carvanha to fight the Zubats?
Yeah but how are you gonna do that in the technical limitations of the base game + pkhex
Love the video and idea
Omg please do this again it looks so fun
9:20 I think you have access to a rival fight after defeating Roxanne, which could compete with Brawly.
I love this challenge!
Would love to see that on the Gen1 Remakes
Just for future reference because of the default ivs given to trainer pokemon aside from very rare exceptions, hidden power will always be Fighting. This is because the ivs by default are 9 in attack and 8 in all the rest because back in gens 1 and 2 the hp dv was completely dependent on the other dvs and whether they are odd or even. So 8 in every stat is impossible as 8 in all but hp would result in 0 hp. Basically each dv was 4 bits (ivs being 5) and you took the last bit of each stat to get the hp stat.
the hidden power type is always fighting for NPC pokemon as their IVs are 0
"3..2...1..."
"Choose mudkip as a starter and use water gun to dunk on every trainer and gym leader until the elote four"
-bash your pokemon against every obstacle until you win the match
"Wait, was that...not what you said?"
-well, no, but kinda yes.
We need a romhack that lets you play through this challenge
Alternative title: Pokemon Emerald but I'm Team Rocket
Very neat idea!
I think maybe you could have used one of Brawly's gym trainers to defeat the Aqua grunts in the museum, and then go back to the Fighting Gym to finish it off.
Drake's dragons versus Wallace McIcebeam? >_>
I pray for you.
Has anyone been surprised by getting hit by Ricky’s Zigzagoon’s surf?
great content!
You could've used the zigzagoon with the surf to surf the the boat with the higher level trainers
This is a super entertaining idea, would love to see it in another game. Fire red maybe?
you probably could have gotten a high magnitude crit to take out torkoal in one hit. it might be 1/100 odds to get mag 10 with crit, but it's just one move to worry about. It would probably be faster than confuse flinch strats.
Bite isn't physical in this Gen btw
It's a dark type move and all dark types moves are special until the physical special split in Gen 4 :)
Good video!
I’d like to see this in scarlet or violet, since every trainer is optional, and it’d be fun to use the titan Pokémon. Also the gym leaders have awful teams, so it could be very hard.
Everyone says Kalos is too easy, so you should try playing it as one of the many weak trainers
I think I've got how to beet them, Teach Zangoose protect, Once Slaking comes in, use protect on SLakings attacking moves and Sword dance on the frist 3 traunt moves, then just smash.
Next video? How evil. Love the video idea.
My prediction for the Norman fight:
The gimmick of Norman’s Gym Trainers is that they all use X Items (and one uses recovery items instead). IIRC, the Zangoose was used with Dire Hit and might’ve known Swords Dance.
way too many months late (algorithm only JUST showed me this vid) and I'm feeling like "Pokemon, but you play as a Snatcher" would be a silly addition on this concept ... but the implications and work to take over the NPC (or reskin your character as the trainer you just beat) would have been too much work
Best youtuber here before viral
I realized the wingull/marill thing, so I figured out the hidden power.
You can beat the trick room again a few times, as long as you can beat the trainers of the level before, right?
Me trying to figure out Abras Hidden Power type:
"Trainers have 0 IVs, leading to a power 30 HP Fighting"
Done ;D
Also do Ultra Sun/Moon hehe
This is the pokemon game equivalent of that TedTalk guy who traded a red paper clip for a house
Heh heh the zangoose has dig doesn't it so you're gonna do the dig truant strat
Why you have the fairy type on azumarill ? Cause I think it was introduced in Pokémon X and Y 😊
Oh sorry it was a wingull sorry, it’s just the picture that doesn’t match 😂
never knew water resisted fighting 🤔
Firered!
What's the theme you played when you battled your rival the 2nd time?
How is hidden power fighting not very effective against maril who is just water type in gen 3?
Bro is playing as Team Rocket
You should try this in Kanto lol
I'd love to see this but in HGSS or Black/White!
This looks like a Pokemon trainer with daddy issues... gets attached to any new team comes by, acritically
This was different than others seen with similar idea (iirc another I saw could at least train against wild mons and learn new moves if possible) but think they also had a mod do it for them instead of having to manually alter your own team.. not that it made much a difference but it was funny when they would slip up and forget they just battled someone and go into a boss fight with a random team.. but also back-to-back battles got interesting since.. they got a new team right away
Btw Tabitha is a guy
I think it would be more interesting if you allowed yourself to use HMs and also TMs like Strength alone makes a lot of fights a lot more doable
Didn't know they were adapting John Carpenter's The Thing into Pokemon...
You put a Marill instead of a Wingull up for the "figure out what type" pictures. This results in some wrong statements about the Abra's hidden power. Marill isn't fairy type yet (just water), so Fighting would NOT be "not very effective" against it--and if you bring up the Generation II-V type chart, you can see that back then there was NO attacking type that is "not very effective" against Water that is also normal effectiveness against Fire (Slugma) and Grass (Grovyle).
or he just put a marill pic instead of wingull
@@eumorpha876 Yup, that's it. I edited my comment to reflect that! Nice catch.
it would be cool if you do the Steven fight with wallace team obviously steven is always better
Me after beating pokemon Violet:
*I am pokemon Violet*
Abra having hidden power fighting confused me. Since Marill isn't fairy yet, shouldn't it not resist fighting?
The Minun pronunciation makes me rage
11:27 pretty sure it’s pronounced MINE-un, because it’s pronounced MINE-us, not MIN-us
15:30 that’s a marill
20:04 her?
15:35 the puzzle I'm trying to solve is how Wingull became Marill
How is it fighting if it's not effective against maril maril is just water type in gen 3
15:42 Marill :3
if you fought 2 grunts back to back wouldn't after beating the 1st grunt you would have there team then you fight the 2nd grunt and then have there team
You are what you eat.
What happened to Branden team after roxane
Please we need a sinnoh version !!!!
My guessing was thrown off because you put Marill in the graphic instead of Wingull.
I like to see you do this in Pokémon x and y
That'd be rad, actually, with how shitty the AI movesets are
15:42 why is it showing a marill not a wingull?
Tell me what you beat and I'll tell you what you are
