My sister and I inherited my father's huge coin collection years ago after he passed away. He started collecting coins in 1926 and had purchased numerous coins from Stack's of Nyc. A few years later my mother started having financial problems and Stack's sent a representative to our home in Milwaukee to look over and appraise his collection which we sold to them. My mother is now 100 years old and if not for my dad's coin collection she would not of been able to afford to live a comfortable life since he passed away. Enjoy your videos.

There are lots of knowledgeable folks in one place and you could get multiple quotes easily or maybe get a tip on who’s buying for more. Usually several buyers on site. All are usually sellers. But some might want specific things to buy or not buy. Google “coin show near me” and you might find one nearby.

This Silver wasn't sold out of my actual stack of Silver, but it was sold out of smaller stacks of sellable Silver that I've been slowly building with lower quality Silver coins over the last decade. A coin shop owner has to cover overhead so I make this comment starting with that. He has spent a lifetime learning what he knows to feed his family. His livelihood depends on estate coins left by collectors to be sold by heir's who are not collectors. If you inherit a large coin collection, unless you are going to spend the decades like this man has to become an expert or sell them one at a time on ebay this is how you sell your collection

I was told to keep all my sleeved, carded coins with receipts and prices marked as such. This makes it easier for them. I stay away from any coins that are plated or colorized. I found all my loose coins metal detecting and know they are only worth the storys I have finding them. I do have the first year state coins in silver. I know those are worth more being they are silver.

Very helpful to see how a coin dealer would evaluate what you have and how much you could expect to get for various items in comparison with what they retail for. In percentage terms, it looked like the 1/10 oz. gold coins and 1 oz silver coins retain the most resale value with him offering over 90%. I was a little surprised he would only pay 80% on the Morgan/Peace dollars by comparison. Of course, some dealers will only offer you melt value on common silver dollars, so his prices were reasonable. Sounds like we should focus our stacking on the most popular bullion coins.

I really like this guy a lot. He’s a character and definitely a treasure trove of information. I’d definitely buy from him. Curious, how long did it take you to build this relationship you both have. I’m sure it didn’t take too long. He definitely seems like a good cat, not trying to pull one over on anyone. Straight shooter.

I have never gone and talk to a coin dealer As Nice And as full of information as this gentleman. Every single coin dealer I have spoken to over the last five years have all been assholes. So I have done most of my research on my own buying books and doing research on the internet. So if you are just starting out with either a new coin collection or one that has been handed down to you be very careful where you go and who'd you talk to you about your currency collection.

Definitely going to share this video on my compiled links for hobbyists I know in the Philippines that are starting out. Thanks again for going an doing this and give my thanks to CoinGuy for the time and honesty in dealing with this type of stuff.

Its interesting to watch this video a year and a half later because that silver is worth almost 10 more dollars today than it was then. Silver is over $26 as I type this and was $17 at that time.

While I order a fair amount from monument metals, I also regularly go to my LCS and keep good relationships with them. They know me by name etc. Occasionally I will buy from them even if it is slightly more than I can get online. With that, they also cut me deals occasionally. Ive also spoke with them about their buy back conditions...what they prefer...what prices they offer for generic, maples, eagles, premium etc.
What ai have learned is that there is a lot of benefit in stacking silver eagles and maples.

I used to have one coin shop in my town. He did nothing but sit behind a counter with a scale in front of offering people a discount to melt...seemingly no matter the quality or rarity of the coin you show him. I once brought him a coin easily worth $1,200.00....he tossed it on his scale just the same and offered me discount to melt. The coin shop is no longer there...they demolished it and built a nail salon.

Love the breakdown. It really helps everyone understand what they need to focus on when they walk in the door. If it's just standard bullion, then spot price minus premium for his sales margin. If it's others, then the year/grade and popularity then comes into play. He didn't worry about the toning on the silver for the stuff that was not sealed as a collector's item. I guess he was expecting it to normally age from the mint as it's being handled. But proof with toning I guess is still a thing with silver. Love how he says you can take it and split it up across these forms. And depending on what you're trying to stack at the time can be the outcome. And I didn't have to hear a bunch of politics! Thank you for that!

I wish every coin shop owner was as classy as him. I recently went to a shop and he showed me some bags of his recent buys... so I started picking some out to buy, but he wouldn’t sell because he hadn’t examined them all yet. So I pointed to a bowl on display and he said the same thing. I was only trying to show some love to the local economy, but couldn’t. So, I like Guy.
