Once you own a metal folding roof in the winter and enjoy the warmth and luxury of said roof you will never go back to soft tops. The E89 is a work of art both inside and out. The new Z4 seems like a cheap attempt at having some kind of roadster in the BMW line up. Unless it performs like a M5 I will be keeping my E89!

You know what puts me off soft top cars....
Once you’ve put the roof up and down a few times the canvas has permanent ‘creases’ or wrinkles. Spoils it for me.

86Rikki you are right! And also when it’s been in the sun for a long time it will start to loose colour!

I've never found this to be a problem, had myself several soft tops over the years and as long as you periodically clean and protect the material all should be fine...no different to taking care of your paintwork really.

I’m starting to appreciate the new Z4 more now and what I love about it is the new colors. So I did some research to this colors and found that there is a Z4 e89 produced in limited editions called the ‘Mille Miglia’ exactly in such color and it even has similar rims. It would be interesting to see more old Z4’s transformed in these new modern colors.

Drew Aron do you think it will ever make a comeback on future models?

I think BMW could make a hard top coupe version of the new Z4, although they may have an agreement with Toyota that prohibits this (to avoid competing against the new Supra).

The E89 has the elegance, charm and traditional look of a BMW roadster. The new Z4 looks more focused on being a sportscar rather than being a grand tourer and it is a radical shift to the design of a BMW roadster. To me the choice for either one depends on what the driver wants out of his or her roadster. I still like the E89 more than the new Z4, especially with the older 6 cylinder non-turbo engine for its reliability.

I loved my 35iS in white and I now own the M40i in red. I agree that the back looks much better on the new version, but I do prefer the front view of the older car, less fussy. As for the roof, I have just come from an MX5 RF, so I do like the metal version and I think the 35iS is a stunner with the roof closed (like the RF). However I do remember how much of a pain the lack of space with the roof down the 35iS was, so maybe practicality over space and weight wins out for me.

One thing I am not to keen on the new g29 z4 is the folding soft top. I have owned both e85 and e89 z4's and in my opinion would take the hard top convertible over the soft top any time as with soft tops the draw back is trying to keep them clean, they also get stretch lines on them over time and start to look old once weathered especially with our climate here in the uk.
Also the hard top as you know gives you the look of a coupe when top up and roadster when down eliminating a need for two different versions of car like the e85 had.

I also wasn't feeling the new one at first, I thought I would see in six months how I felt about it then. I looks much better in maroon than the launch grey.

What a lot of people seem to miss while reviewing the new Z4 (even all the big car channels) is the change in tyres.. BMW seems to have dumped the run-flats and now fits "normal" Michelin PS tyres.. I think this will have a big impact on how the new car handles compared to the old one..
I'm still not sure about the new Z4.. I have a 2010 E89 30i right now and tbh I think the lines on that look better, especially with the roof closed.. But I'll have to see the new one IRL to make my mind up.. I really like the hardtop on the E89 because it's my only car that I also use in winter.. I understand the pros of a canvas roof with more bootspace etc, but for me it would be less practical then the E89 with hardtop.. Most people buy these type of cars as a 2nd car, not for daily driving, so I understand BMW's choice to go back to canvas, but for me it's a shame.. Also a shame only the topmodel has the inline 6 cylinder still, but that was already an issue with the E89 after the facelift, it was the major reason I bought a 2010 30i as I wanted that great and unfortunately last NA 3.0L inline 6-cylinder..

I know, the run flats were a nightmare, really screwed up the handling (like my Mini Cooper S) so glad they are gone on the new version.

Not impressed with the design, will keep my E89 35i, also 340PS is not are real power upgrade to previous version (US will get 380PS though), I’m happy with the E89 :)

Zimba Motoring Mine is a 2010 model and I’m having it for over 5 years now, had no issues really apart from replacing the high pressure fuel pump (like for almost all N54 engines) and a few rattles in the front console sometimes when temperatures outside drop (goes away when the car warms up though), E89 has a very timeless design imo and I love the hard top since it’s my only car also for winter. I’m just not into the new front lights, they lack that sharp mean look of the E89 :)

The headlights should have continued to join the front grill. It would look more aggressive.

I live in Chicago and the soft top only is not a good proposition for the winters here. I wish BMW had at least offered an option to get hard top upgrade. Plus love that the E89 looks like a proper coupe when the top is up. Soft tops to me personally just ruin the beautiful color scheme of the car.

The G29 looks pretty nice. I would never buy one as I like the hard top of the E89. But, your video where you show the G29 next to your E89 and there is not comparison. Camera angle after camera angle the E89 just pulls my eyes away from the G29.

the new Toyota z4 I mean z4 BMW does not feel right. Yes it has good tech and so it should but the design does not do it for me. Love my z4 e89 and I will make it look sicker. IA

don't know about you guys, but I really think the E89 looks better. the new one lost the classic long hood and "the Shark like style" if you know what I mean, the new Z4 looks like a sort of weird hybrid of a ...I don't know, SLC and SLK.

Nope, sorry just don't like the new one at all. Will stick with my E89. The E89 has that classic European roadster look. The new one's front end looks too short, it's squat and square looking. It doesn't have the elegant look of the previous model. It looks like a Japanese car rather than a BMW, I understand it's to be the new Supra too which makes more sense. It looks like a new Supra to me rather than a new Z4. Soft top roof is a big step backwards too. There's just nothing I like better about it from the outside. The interior is nicer, I'll give it that. I'm waiting to see if they do a coupe version, might end up looking better.
I'm not sure what to do now when it comes to replacing mine, I was hoping to get a new one. I'm not a big fan of BMW's design direction with any of their new models really. I think Mercedes' new designs are much better. I really like the new C class coupe especially. Might be my last BMW for a while tbh, see what the next gen look like although we will probably be the best part of ten years before we see a whole new Z4.

feuder ali I totally agree, I’m a little bit confused with their models, engine and design direction. There’s a bit of soul and magic missing.

Hate the new version, from the front it looks so much like the Fiat 124 Spider.
You spend all that money on a BMW roadster and most people will tell you that your new Fiat looks nice, lol.
