You hit the nail when you said, this car doesn't need a bigger engine. It is much more powerful than most of its drivers will be able to handle. I had lots of fun when I could testdrive it a few days ago. The only things that I would have liked even more would be a manual gearbox, further reduced weight, slimmer lines and less electronic assistance. I don't need HUD, line-assist and artifical engine-sound in a roadster. But taken as it is, I still like it a lot and it is without question much more comfortable and safer to drive than many older, more classic roadsters while it still preserved most of the fun-aspects. Well done BMW and nice review!
What a fantastic down to earth honest review for the everyday sports car use it is intended for instead of those M40i this and that reviews as though the 2.0i isn't up to their personal motorsport standards, yada yada get a Caterham or go racing then !!!.......... Well done man !!!!! Everyday luxury sports car, not track car !
Nice review! ✌️😎 And I’m also pleased to see the base model being test driven for a change, instead of the M40i that most journalists want to get their hands on. I’ve yet to test drive any of these, though I intend to try them all, and may hire one for a day or two to make a better assessment of purchase desirability. From everything I’ve read and seen about the three engine choices, I suspect that the 2 Litre 255 BHP variant may be the way to go, because it’s lighter in the nose than the M40i and so - if the mid-range model is chipped (such tuning options are already available) - one would end up with a car that’s easily fast enough for most drivers, more frugal than the 6 Cylinder model, and more nimble in the corners. Sure, the Straight 6 sounds better, but the 255 BHP 4 pot actually sounds remarkably sporty for a much hated cylinder configuration.... much nicer sounding than the Boxster 4 pot allegedly, and also, the smaller engine is surely cheaper to service and maintain than the Straight 6? Incidentally, you commented that the exhaust note on the Z4 you drove sounded like it was coming from just behind your head...? I think that’s probably because BMW pipes the engine sound electronically through the sound system speakers, and there are large speakers mounted behind the seats... More and more manufacturers are resorting to that technique nowadays, to compensate for the relatively unexciting exhaust output from the smaller capacity, 4 cylinder turbo engines that are becoming the norm. 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks again for a sensible, down to Earth and fun review. 🙋🏻♂️
I love the look of this car, thanks for reviewing the 20i! Thinking about getting one in February. That's the car most of us are looking for anyway i think.
The first 6 sports cars I had were standard/manual. After the 10th time being stuck in rush hour traffic for an hour or 2 , you will opt for paddle shift believe me.
Taking a sports car to rush hour traffic is like taking ice cream to the desert. It just doesn't belong there ;) But of course I get what you're saying :)
Thanks for a very good and informative video. By the way, what you hear 20 cm behind you is not the exhaust but the loudspeakers producing the exhaust note which is expected by the common sports car driver.
Hans-Joachim Schumann No way, haha! I know that quite a lot of cars nowadays have this speaker function. I’ve driven quite some cars/brands with the exhaust note coming also through the speakers. But I never thought about it in this Z4. If I wouldn’t know, I’d say it’s the real exhaust sound. To bad the real engine and exhaust sounds are diminishing in cars... Thanks!👍
@@PureDriveTV The exhaust pipes are still real and functional on the Z4 but the exhaust noise isn't. The racing driver Tim Schrick mentions it in his critical video published here 9 months ago (grey Z4 with Munich license plate, "M" beginning) (in German).
Great video. It's a nice looking car but personally I prefer my E85 and having a manual box and proper dials, rather than that odd looking screen. I reckon in sunlight that would be invisible.
Jon Elson I prefer the manual gearbox above anything!👊 And I like the E85, very nice car. About the screen.. I had quite some sunlight at the end of the day of shooting this and the screen was actually fine. I did experience some “invisible” screens in some older cars though. Thank you!👍

First of all thanks for the great video. I ordered the car in the full equipment as you test it and will receive it on the 20th of May. The video makes it a little easier to anticipate the day I drive it myself. At the moment I drive the E89 2.3i. A BMW I appreciate, but I also like to exchange for this.
I've put down a deposit on an M Sport 20i and picking up next week, very excited! Out of the many reviews I've watched this is definitely in my top 2 - great review! Could I ask at 0:59 - where did you get this photo from?
I think this is the best engine to get. I love Z cars but they have never been all about speed like the proper M cars. They are about having the roof down on a nice day and just having some fun. I think the problem for me with the 40i is that it gets too expensive, it's like 60,000+ EUR on the road depending on taxes and for this price I can get a Porsche or if I buy a car that's a few years old I can even get a supercar for this money. I think BMW will mostly sell this 2.0L version because for most Z drivers this gives them everything they need, it's fast enough and it's more affordable. If you just want a race car then better to buy an M4 imo. I still like my E89 Z4 better though tbh, I like the hard top. I think the hard top makes more sense in northern Europe due to the weather most of the year. If you live in the south of France or California or something it's not so important maybe. Even the hard top Z4's have had a lot of problems with water getting in. I'd like to wait a few years for problems like these to be addressed before I thought about getting one of these. Sadly I know from experience that repair/maintenance costs on Z's are not cheap!
feuder ali I think yore right in general. But luckily not everyone is the same, so not sure which engine would sell the most..😬 Leaking problems with the hard top? That’s surprising to me..😯
I own an e86 3.0si coupe manual, I am keeping it as a Modern classics and that straight six is awesome. This is a better interpretation of the Zed 4 than the last model, I'm all for the NA engine but good car by modern standard.
One of the reasons why i would like to see which gear the car is driving in is to make sure the gearbox isn’t faulty and is not stuck in 4th gear for instance.
PureDriveTV not necessarily. Let’s say you have a 6 gear auto but it never goes into 6th gear. I doubt you would notice that easily. You would probably notice decreased fuel economy over time, although this is not granted 🙃
Hello - I'm a little confused when you say 'The other/older BMWs show which gear you are in'. I have had 6 (or is it 7..?) BMWs from 325 (2) via 525 to X3 and X5. All automatics. Not one of them have shown what gear they are in, EXCEPT when in sport mode! What BMWs have you driven that showsn what gear they are in, when driving in COMFORT/normal mode?
CoNr4D You’re right, that would indeed be interesting. But I’m not planning to, because I don’t have a lot of time to make these Puredrive video’s. so whenever I’m able to make a video I want to film something “else”.😁 Maybe whenever I would have more time for this, I’d consider doing that. Ciao!✌️
It's a magic car: when you enter it, your coat disappears (05:09). ;) Great review I can't wait for mine to arrive... I think the 30i is the sweet spot. The 40i is more front heavy and the taxes in Europe... :(
Thanks, great review. I'm miss manual shifting and i naturally aspirated engines in the new BMWs. I sold my F30 328i 2015 in favor to E46 flat-6 ;) Very good that it's still fun in normal speeds, but how is it on the edge? BMW 328i 2015 is not so good on the edge in some situations, and can go from understeer to oversteer. Gratings from a purist.
I live in Hong Kong and just bought this 20i in MANUAL! I am puzzled that you guys in Europe (at least in the UK, now the Nederland) DON'T have it (except Germany perhaps according to BMW website). My car was a special order but cancelled, hence I got a big discount from BMW. Problem is, I just don't seem enjoy it and I do miss the auto box very much, having not driven a manual for 25 years!! I have no confidence to say quickly pull out from stop in traffic fearing my gear changing being too slow! And the set up is so sensitive that lifting up the clutch a bit fast you get a real jerky motion - that makes me miss the auto even more, when you can just floor it down! Also in no way I am getting those beautiful exhaust note you and other channel are showing. With a manual it seems you really need to shift once it gets to about 2500 revs otherwise the engine seems complaining! Any thoughts on that?
Hi. I’m just seeing that I’ve missed some comments here. But of course I want to reply. Well, that’s a surprise to me…that these cars do exist with a manual gearbox. I had no idea. This was actually the same with the M5 E60. In the US you could get them with a manual. In Europe not. Quite weird haha. I get your point. Personally I would always go for the manual with such a drivers car. But what I like doesn’t mean that someone else might like that. It’s all about personal preference, there’s no right or wrong. So how’s your experience with the car now, 3 months later? I really hope you can enjoy it more now that you are more used to it. And about the exhaust note… I have no idea. I would say the auto would/should sound the same as the manual. But apparently it doesn’t..?
@@PureDriveTV hi I've had the car for 5 months now, getting more used to the manual, though sometimes I made silly mistakes that really hurt (like not pressing the clutch deep enough and changed gear.....!!!) This is not a fast car, with less than 200 hp, any car on the road, even those cheap Toyota taxis in the street of HK, can easily pass me! But this car has tons of personality, and I can see people really turning their eyes! I like wearing suit and tie, so I guess this makes me feel a little bit like James Bond! The exhaust note is fake from speakers, so I stop debating about it. I have learnt to be happy with what I have, so here I am a happy Z4 20 owner!
@@ManlyHK1 Ooff…watch it with the clutch🙈 Always press it 100% till the end before shifting. And when you press the throttle full untill max rpm/redline…there aren’t many cars that can keep up for sure😁 But only do that with a warm engine of course. Cool to hear that you’re more used to it now and feel happy with it🙏😃
@@PureDriveTV The car will be in for its first service next month - 3000 km. Do you think I can start revving it after the service? Also I find it hard to start FAST from first gear smoothly - a few real bad jerky motions before. Should I let the clutch go fast or slow? If too fast it jerks real bad, if too slow it hangs on the biting point, car not accelerating and causing excessive wear. That's the reason why I don't like manual - on an Auto, u just floor it whenever necessary and that's my idea of fun - not a whole lot of accompanied jerkiness and discomfort!
Nicolas Meyer I haven’t driven the 30i, so I can’t really say. I think that has more to do with your budget. For some people it’s worth to spend some extra money for that 50+ BHP, for others it’s not worth it. If I would spend more than I would save up for the M40i. And if I wouldn’t go for the M40i, than I’d save myself some money and go for the 20i and have some extra cash in the pocket. But once again, I haven’t driven the 30i, so not completely sure..😁
ILoveMashedPotato Cool! Good question. I can’t remember trying that. But I assume these modern cars all have that option.. Ask the dealer, they’ll be able to tell you. I hope you’ll enjoy it!👍
Phoo..difficult for me to say. Of course a 7 series would be better..😄 Even though the Z4 is not a hardcore sportscar, like a ferrari or something.. I think the suspension is too stiff to be driving “comfortably” on “bad” roads.
MPC007_EXP Good question. I have no idea since I didn’t drive the MX5. Could be a good contender, considering (I’m guessing) the MX5 is cheaper, but could provide the same kind of driving fun.
Oh damn, I’m just reading this now. Sorry! Just like Charlie says here: The Boxster is unbeatable in its class. The balance in the Boxster is obviously better and the whole car is just more refined, made into perfection. The BMW is still great though. It’s just very very tough to beat Porsche.
PureDriveTV Z4 looks Amazing. But I test drove new mx-5 with 184 hp and it was incredible machine absolute joy to drive. Didn’t expect at all that it would be such a fun car. Now I have to test drive new z4 and Supra 😀. But I am worried that those cars are 500kg heavier and I think this would make a very big difference in how car react to steering. We would see.
Alexandr Nikiti Yeah, the Mazda is a lot of fun to drive. And if you’re really considering buying the mx5 or maybe the z4, than of course there’s also the price difference to think about. Yes, the cars are heavier, but everything around those cars is build for that weight. I haven’t driven the Supra yet, so I can say anything about that. But I assume it’s good. Let me know when you’ve driven them.👍
PureDriveTV actually I checked prices on mobile.de and base model of Z4 costs same money as Mx-5 selection version. In that case I think it is much smarter decision to buy Z4 :). But I am not planning to buy new vehicle. I would wait 1-2 years and see how prices drop and than decide what to buy. In case of Mx-5 I am not willing to pay more than 17000 eur for 2.0 liter. If I would decide to buy Supra or ZR I would probably buy 3.0 liter. But till than I want to rent them or test drive. Problem is that they don’t want to let test drive Supra as there are not that many in Czech Republic. So would see if I would have chance to drive one. From design point I like the most Supra. It looks badass in real! However great think about Mx-5 is that you can drive slow however you think that you go mega fast 😀.
For looks, as I believe the 2009 models look better than the previous, and practicality, as soft tops have inherent issues after a number of years with wear and tear... You don't feel silly driving a convertible in the winter with a hard top...
Russ D Ah ok, I get your point. I do like the looks of the previous hard top aswell. But somehow I feel the soft top suits this kind of car better. Yeah, after some years the soft top starts to show its weak spots, but still.. That’s the nature of the soft top. On the other hand...So far I haven’t seen the first gen Z4 with a ugly or broken top, though. Here in the Netherlands we don’t realy have strong winters, so I guess my look on that is different.😄
FX I’m glad opinions differ...otherwise we would all drive the same cars.😉 I have to say that when I saw this new Z4 on pictures for the first time, I didn’t find it very pretty somehow. But once I saw it in real..damn, I really like the way it looks!👌
The Z4 is the worst BMW car in there lineup. You would know with in 10 min of driving. It seems this guy is really trying to convince him self it a nice car. BMW knows the only way for them to sell any of there cars is to put an M-Badge on them even its fake.
Thank you for doing this! Was getting tired of M40i videos

THE BEST OF THE BEST
❤❤❤BMW❤❤❤❤
Just a question. How tall are you? Is it enough space?
Pawel Zaorski 1.82 cm. The space for me is very good👌 Greetings Maciej.😎
What about the 30I? do you think that this engine is the sweetspot?
Nicolas Meyer I haven’t driven the 30i, so I can’t really say. I think that has more to do with your budget. For some people it’s worth to spend some extra money for that 50+ BHP, for others it’s not worth it. If I would spend more than I would save up for the M40i. And if I wouldn’t go for the M40i, than I’d save myself some money and go for the 20i and have some extra cash in the pocket. But once again, I haven’t driven the 30i, so not completely sure..😁
on the f32 4 series it also doesn't show the gear in drive
RaGeAlucard Ah ok, I didn’t know that. I thought these latest BMW’s were the first ones to have that.
@@PureDriveTV Neither on the e89 Z4 S20i
Koenraad De Wolf Ok, didn’t notice that. I did drive the E89 a few times, but that was on track and in manual mode.😄
Thanks for the info!👍
Im getting this Z4 20i soon. Can the roof be opened using the key or it’s an option? Im looking forward to it
ILoveMashedPotato Cool! Good question. I can’t remember trying that. But I assume these modern cars all have that option.. Ask the dealer, they’ll be able to tell you. I hope you’ll enjoy it!👍
Only if you buy the confort access at least in germany...
is it good car for a bad roads in the city? I mean some road pits in the city(Russia has bad roads)
Phoo..difficult for me to say. Of course a 7 series would be better..😄 Even though the Z4 is not a hardcore sportscar, like a ferrari or something.. I think the suspension is too stiff to be driving “comfortably” on “bad” roads.
Nice test
Thnx!
How does it stack against the 2.0L 184hp MX-5??
MPC007_EXP Good question. I have no idea since I didn’t drive the MX5. Could be a good contender, considering (I’m guessing) the MX5 is cheaper, but could provide the same kind of driving fun.
I will wait 7-8 years for this budget purchase LOL
Powerlove Same here, amigo!!😂
Nice video!
Wu Yifeng Thank you!👍
With a tune
This engine makes way more power
DEADLY noob gaming Yes, that’s what a tune does to engines😁👍
See it for the first time. Is the more powerfull 2 liter worth the money?
Eric458ita That’s hard to say. For some people it is, for others it isn’t. That is a pure personal preference.
How tall are you? because I wanna know if the wind messes up my hair
I am a PILOT in Airline Commander Haha, good question!😄 I’m 1,82m
is the 20i also dual clutch? is it fast?
it's 8 speed ZF.
How is it compared with 718 Boxster?
It's not as good
Oh damn, I’m just reading this now. Sorry! Just like Charlie says here: The Boxster is unbeatable in its class. The balance in the Boxster is obviously better and the whole car is just more refined, made into perfection. The BMW is still great though. It’s just very very tough to beat Porsche.
Now there is manual in 2.0
m sport package?
PPPSTTYO Do you mean if this car has the M sport package? Yes, it has.
This or MX-5 🤔?
Alexandr Nikiti I like the mx5, but this for me.
However great think about Mx-5 is that you can drive slow however you think that you go mega fast 😀.
can i have the budget one please? thank you.
P. Petrance Good choice!😃👌
Good video
Mashetekiller Thank you!
BMW should make a hypercar.
Or atleast a supercar
TheLamboMan I agree! But with a big V12 and no electric nonsense!💪😁
FX Yep...I bet BMW could pull off something really crazy if they’d take the effort.
@@PureDriveTV they just need to pass the sick regulations that are obligatory nowadays
FX Exactly....😔
Feel like they've taken a step backwards with the soft top...
Russ D That’s interesting. Why do you feel like that? Only for the looks or..?
For looks, as I believe the 2009 models look better than the previous, and practicality, as soft tops have inherent issues after a number of years with wear and tear... You don't feel silly driving a convertible in the winter with a hard top...
Although after owning a 2010 Z4 3 litre manual, I'm looking forward to trying this out...
Russ D Yeah, you should! Let me know when you’ve driven it, what you think.👍
I will go for a MX5
Can't blame you. All the generations of the MX5 are great!
Front look like Jaguar f-type.....
Crazy Man Is that a good thing?🙈
Unless you are a show-off you don't need the M40i BUT the basic cars interior is a bit black & bleak.
0:34 hahahaha lol
Mashetekiller 🙈😂
Hey Maciek! 🙋♂️
FX 👋😃
This car is a Toyota 🇯🇵🇯🇵
Fernando I’m quite sure that’s a BMW logo 😁
PureDriveTV my friend this is a Toyota no BMW 🇯🇵🇯🇵😂😂
Fernando I just went to the Toyota dealer, asking for the G29 Z4. They don’t have those, they said.😳
PureDriveTV 🇯🇵🇯🇵🚗🚗👈🏾
Fernando Please don’t tell me that you tell a Supra owner he has a Z4..🙈
Oh God... that new z4 is ugly... maybe higher trim will look better
FX I’m glad opinions differ...otherwise we would all drive the same cars.😉 I have to say that when I saw this new Z4 on pictures for the first time, I didn’t find it very pretty somehow. But once I saw it in real..damn, I really like the way it looks!👌
In reality it looks much better.
MasterSteve I agree!
@John Mitchell it does... won't deny it
Looks much better in reality! I didn't like it either until I saw it in reality.
Really annoying how the presenter is shouting
The Z4 is the worst BMW car in there lineup. You would know with in 10 min of driving. It seems this guy is really trying to convince him self it a nice car. BMW knows the only way for them to sell any of there cars is to put an
M-Badge on them even its fake.
911 991.2 TURBO S You drunk..?
Wait what?
The z4 is not the worst car bmw make. The 2 series active and gran tourer are! Great video mate
Anup Patel I wouldn’t call it the worst, but I agree on those BMW’s...are the least appealing😁
Thank you!!👊
Please do a video on the new 8 series. That car is a beast
I love the g92,ive got one but the 2.0(30)268 hp version. For those who prefer the e serie,i would said the same if i cant afford one.
