    This is, I must say, the slickest anti-Mormon propaganda I have seen to date. The distorted use of truth and half-truth, the background music, and graphics are markedly more sophisticated than in past efforts by apostates. We are not deceived however. And no one else need be.

      Everything I have quoted here is directly from lds.org. I invite you to read the essays these quotes came from for yourself. If these facts seem "anti-Mormon," you might want to ponder why the church is putting them forth as factual and historical truth.

    It’s sad to think the Church excommunicated faithful, believing members in the past because they learned of some of this information and simply brought it up with the Brethren.

    The half-truths and misrepresentations in the Gospel Topic Essays are even more evidence to me of the falsity of the claim that the Mormon church is "the one and only true and living church on the face of the earth". It's a masterful whitewash job of some of the worst examples of "lying for the Lord" that I've ever seen. How could the "Church of Jesus Christ" possibly be built on such dishonesty?

  • @robpaulson7992

    Let's start with the fact that these essays are all ANONYMOUSLY written. We are not told who wrote them, nor are they cited in any official publications of the church, such as manuals or magazines. Also, why are they in such a location that is somewhat difficult to find on the church's website (unless somebody tells you where to look) and why are they not more widely publicized to the general church membership? This feels kind of sneaky and deceptive, like the church is playing games. Why not be up front about who wrote these essays? And why not make all church members aware of them? Seems like they don't want anyone to be able to quote them as official church publications, or attribute their content to any specific church leader. Also seems they don't want people to know about them, except when somebody is already having a faith crisis.

      My Seminary teacher "asked" me to read these essays ( I don't even know they existed) because I told her I'm studying Mormonism history( she told me that I shouldn't be reading things on the internet cuz that's all undocumented and from people who sinned). I guess I become a bad student to her, but who cares? her action only makes me feel uncomfortable and proving what I am studying is somehow right.

    As a LDS/Mormon adult, I'm very concerned about Mormon apostles specifically instructing church educators to use "inoculation" techniques in teaching our children about the inconvenient truths about our doctrines and history. Let's be clear: "inoculation" is a very deceptive approach and the Mormon Church should stand fully on its own and shouldn't need deception to be effective. Truth matters and deception should never be used in trying to lead people to truth.
    So what is "inoculation" and why is it deceptive? It is a technique that follows the metaphor of inoculating against a virus, and is a technique long used by authoritarian regimes, unethical marketers, and cults. In this technique, a person uses a weakened, lessen form of a "virus" (i.e., in this case, use a little bit of the truth about Mormonism but intentionally do not disclose the full truth) so that when a person is fully exposed to a strong form of a "virus" (i.e., the full story on the history of Mormonism and its doctrine) the person is able to withstand the onslaught of the full "virus" (i.e., in this case, their extreme shock/cognitive dissonance that what they thought the Mormon Church purported to be is not actually what it is).
    I call on the Apostles and Church leaders to renounce their campaign to "inoculate" our youth. This kind of deception is wrong and can only backfire in the long run. Truth matters, so let's just deal with the full truth about Mormonism without intentional lack of disclosure, apologetics, deception, and the like.
    Why are we ashamed of being different?! We are what we are! We believe what we believe! Here's an idea: Let's not lie about Mormonism and let's fully inform our children and potential converts, so they don't feel we've tricked them.
    The truth about Mormonism should stand on its own and should attract the right people who are worthy of God, our spirit father. Yes, we believe in eternal polygamy, multiple gods, becoming gods, having our own planets, God was once a man, Adam created the Earth (under Jesus' direction, who was under God's direction), we have the priesthood and everyone else practices priest crafts, we must baptize and marry everyone who has ever lived on planet Earth, we have sacred underwear with sacred symbols that protects us, we have secret handshakes and secret names, we must practice polygamy to enter the highest Kingdom of Heaven, we don't believe in eternal Hell, we believe Jesus and Satan were actually brothers, we don't believe in the Trinity, the Atonement isn't enough as we must perform righteous works and confess all our major sins the Church leaders, we have sacred symbols and handshakes to pass angels and gain access to God, all other Churches are an abomination, we reject many of the Bible's teachings and consider it a useful but flawed book (modern scriptures and modern prophets are better), gays and LGBT people are willfully choosing against God's plan for them as gender was pre-determined before Earth, Joseph Smith largely translated the BOM with his peep stone looking into a top hat and not touching the golden plates, Joseph Smith had many wives and a couple were 14 (not "several months shy of 15") and that was not normal or legal at the time, the garden of Eden was in Missouri, ancient Jews came to the Americas and wrote the BOM, God wants us to avoid alcohol, tobacco, tea, and coffee and if we don't we will not be worthy of His presence.
    Let's just get out the truth about Mormonism, move on, and stop being ashamed!! It's filthy that so many Mormons are so ashamed of Mormonism that they won't be honest about it. They just want to be "normal" and to pretend they are just like everyone else. We're not! Remember that we were supposed to be a peculiar people and we were supposed to follow God and His ways, not the ways of the world.

    The Mormon Informant one thing I don't understand is how from your worldview you can justify this statement "The violence the Mormons committed is wrong"
    Taken that it is a given you are an Athiest what is right or wrong? Is it universal and objective or is it subjective and dependent on culture.

    • @TheMormonInformant
      @TheMormonInformant  7 лет назад +22

      I'd like to begin by pointing out that I never made that statement, and am under no obligation to justify it.
      That being said, evolution has selected for pro-social and cooperative behaviors. Empathy and morality are hard wired into our DNA to help enforce these behaviors, and to contribute to the overall success of the species. When humans put this evolutionary ethical code into words, we get the golden rule, which is common to nearly every belief system. So while there is no universal definition of what is "right" or "wrong," humans have collectively decided that harm to others is detrimental to everyone, and is therefore unacceptable. That is where morality comes from: The collective evolutionary consciences of the pack. That is also why there is some variance among cultures as to what is acceptable.

    • @matthewj0429
      @matthewj0429 7 лет назад

      The Mormon Informant I see. So is it right to kill people with genetic defects. For example I have Tourette syndrome because of my genetic defect should I be euthanized to ensure the further success of our species in the long run?
      If another group of humans decides it is not detrimental to harm each other we have no right to interfere with that group. Correct? You are arguing that the source of morality is human authority. This means we have no right to judge a people group with different moral standards than our own.

    • @TheMormonInformant
      @TheMormonInformant  7 лет назад +16

      I made no such argument. Putting poor arguments in my mouth does not give you a moral high ground.
      Eugenics is based in solid science, but euthanasia is obviously not the proper way to implement it. Genetic engineering where detrimental traits are eliminated is the most ethical solution, and causes no harm to the individual while improving the species in the long run.
      Rights are just as subjective as morality. The right to interfere with another culture does not exist unless a group decides it should. The US is constantly interfering with cultures that have different morals, because the people of the US decided that was their right. Other countries prefer neutrality, and feel it is not their place nor right to determine morality for others. Weighing the harm caused by either outlook is difficult, so the rightness or wrongness of interference remains controversial.

    • @matthewj0429
      @matthewj0429 7 лет назад

      The Mormon Informant I apologize for any straw man arguments I may have made against you.
      However why is it wrong to cause harm to the individual in eugenics? You say euthanasia is not the "right" way to implement eugenics. This assumes that human beings are valuable and have some sort of worth.
      An Atheistic worldview can't support the idea of humans having value. We are made up of the same material as every material thing in the universe. Star dust. Therefore our worth is the same as non-living and living things. After all we are made up of the same material and we are only matter.
      So is your claim that morality is determined by human authorities?

    • @TheMormonInformant
      @TheMormonInformant  7 лет назад +15

      Again, I am not making a case for universal morality, but for the collective morality of a cooperative species. In nature, some animals eliminate the offspring which exhibit weakness or disease, creating a stronger gene pool. For them, this is a necessary evil.
      Humans, who generally have greater ability to feel empathy, tend not to engage in such behavior, with the exception of the Nazis. We'd rather harm the gene pool than the individual. Genetic engineering is a win-win, harming neither. The value placed on life or individual worth is once again completely subjective, with some not valuing human life at all. However, the average person is hard-wired to care. Through capital punishment and imprisonment of those who do not value human life, our species has self selected for genes which promote care for others. This does nothing to prove intrinsic individual worth.
      Humans can only have value if there are others to value them, or if they value themselves. There is no intrinsic value in a human life, only the value we individually and collectively assign to it.
      Morality is determined by a community, and shifts to reflect social progress. Slavery, for example, used to be moral by societal standards, but thankfully human empathy won out in the end. Through empathy, cooperation, trust, and education, humanity will continue to weed out other causes of harm, growing closer and closer to the ideal of maximum freedom balanced with minimum harm. Some cultures are further along in that endeavor, and will have to patiently assist less mature ones to attain that goal.

    Unfortunately, members of the Church are not perfect, even members at the highest levels. Jona ran from his appointed duties, David killed Uriah so he could marry his wife. Members are human, and have their agency to choose right or wrong. The wrongs are always more obvious than the rights that people do. Actions by an imperfect congregation does not make the doctrine imperfect. Such is the trial of life.

    • @TheMormonInformant
      @TheMormonInformant  4 года назад +13

      "Actions by an imperfect congregation does not make the doctrine imperfect."
      The doctrine also has its origins in imperfect people. That's how doctrines like the Oath of Vengeance, Blood Atonement, the curse of Cain and priesthood ban, and polygamy entered and exited LDS belief and practice.

      Unfortunately the numbers of faithful members are dwindling. they didn't even read the statistics at the last conference. Doesn't that tell you anything? Also unfortunate is the fact that the essays are only the tip of the iceberg and don't go nearly into enough depth on the issues. The reason people cant leave it alone once they leave is that they are incredibly angry that they have been lied to their whole lives by the very leaders they trusted with their lives. After investing a lifetime into the fraud it is pretty difficult to just sit back and do nothing while you watch the pain and suffering it is causing so many others who are still in.
