  • What gives the best result of top APC-C camera with a kit lens, and a good compact camera? Here I compare the Sony a6000 and a6500 with kit lens to the Sony RX100 IV for sharpness, low light performance and bokeh.
And also throw in some good prime lenses on the a6500 to see what difference that makes.
Also sorry for the somewhat poor audio quality, as the de-noising didn't work this time. I've included sub titles if you have a hard time hearing.

For me this review is reliable, but only in laboratory conditions. Please just go outside and take photos of the sea or a beach with RX100 and A6000 with even a kit lens. Then size of the sensor matters... on RX100 you will only see white waves, but on A6000 you will see a sunlight hitting the waves, etc.. Generally - dynamic range, colors and 3d feeling of the photo.. this is the thing that makes me want to go with at least A6000 with a good lens (for now I own RX100 V, A6000 + 18-105 f//4 and A7 + FE 28-70, so I really know what I say.
    Regards.

Great review. I loved how you showed the difference between kit lens and primes on the 6500. This is one of the more helpful reviews I've seen because of this approach.

    Great review - thank you!
Basically, you need a good lens for the a6000-series cameras. If you don't want to shell out the money for good lenses (and deal with having to change them out and carry them with you) you might as well get the RX100 IV/V that fits in your pocket. The RX100's also are much better for selfies (also have smile shutter - very handy for this) and have built-in ND filter so video is much easier in sunlight.

Glad that you've taken their FF equivalences into account. Alot of other people don't realize how much it can affect pictures between two completely different systems.

Thanks for the comparison. When comparing APS-C and 1in apertures, even though it's the "same" F stop, they are not the same, since they have different depth of field and ISO performance will be better with the larger sensor, so it's not really "same" aperture. The technical term used for this is equivalence, and actually, F3.5 in APS-C is equivalent to F2 in 1in (F1.94 to be exact). So, the APS-C kit lens is a lot sharper than the RX10 if you take this into account.

It was your video that helped me decide to purchase the sony SEL 18-135 kit lens for my a6000 instead of purchasing the RX100 VI back in August of 2018. This summer I decided to start doing video and purchased the a6400. I was looking for a comparison between the Sony a6400 with the 18-135 lens and the RX100VI and came across your video once again. Based on your test results and given that the maximum aperture of the RX 100 VI and VII is 2.8 at the wide end and 4.5 at tele, I'd say that the performance of the RX 100 VI and VII is on par with that of the a6400 with the SEL 18-135. If I did not have a need for prime lenses for my a6400, I'd conclude that my decision to purchase the a6400 was not the best decision, however, because I need and use prime lenses such as the 50mm F1.8 and the 85mm f1.8, I am content to have purchased the a6400. Now, if the cost of the RX100 VI or VII were between $600 to $800. I would have definitely purchased one of them instead and lived with the limitations it may have presented.

That's a great review of both cameras, I have a A6000 with a 35mm Prime plus kit lens, I also have the RX100 mark 4. I only use my cameras for travel, now find the RX 100 is my go to camera, it fits in your pocket etc. I wonder why Sony has never brought in interchangeable lens on the RX 100 series? Cheers

I have considered buying an RX100 but there are three things give the edge to mirrorless cameras and for me, these are the reasons enough to keep using the a6000 and my new a6400. 1)zoom speed, 2)hot shoe, 3)lens options.

The RX100 iv seems less sharp at ISO6400. I would not be surprised if the raw file gets noise reduction in camera. Does anyone know?

Great video. As noted with a good prime it would not even be close. For small cameras the Sonys are great but the 6500 IS the better camera.

William Parmley not all kits are useless. The Panasonic 12-60mm for example is pretty good. The only rule in photography is... there are no rules ;)

Hmmm i found that 16-50 kit lens on sony is okay.. its tad slower than prime lens.. but it will do every kind of photograph just fine..

How about for video? would they be similar? Would the 6500 be "better" for video? of course, I would need a better lens on the 6000 to see a difference. I have the RX100 IV and I like the 120fps option which is not on the 6000...but if the video quality was better I would get one...the 6500 is too much! A good lens for the 6000 is the sigma 16mm f1.4....big but good.
I shot this short travel video with the RX100 iv

I haven't done a video comparison, but the a6000 only has HD video, and a lower bit rate and slower frame rate than the RX100 IV, so presumably the RX 100 IV will be better than the a6000 quality wise.
For video sharpness isn't quite as important, since even 4K is only 8 mega pixels. But a big aperture does help to reduce noise, so that is really the only area I can see an a6000 with a good prime could be noticeably better than the RX 100 IV. If you do intend to use the a6000 at least make sure to update firmware so that you get AVC-S support, which is higher quality than the AVCHD codec it originally shipped with.
The a6500 has the same 4K and bit rate as the RX 100 IV, though the RX 100 IV has some high frame rate modes which the a6500 doesn't (240 fps and more).

thanks!! I'm thinking of getting a camera for gimbal work for timelapse etc I have been using a Canon 70D with a 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 STM which is awesome for daylight but really bad indoors (I don't like pushing my iso past 1600 for video) and I was considering the Sony A6000 but since I already have the Sony RX100 iv I think I should give it a try...getting the A6000 with the kit lens wouldn't help me much really unless I get something like the Sigma 16mm f1.4! I use the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 with the Canon 70D and a C100 and it really is a great lens...hmm...anyway....I will learn how to get the most of out the RX100 iv...it sure is a great little camera...thanks so much for the video!
