Same here, flip out sideways is cumbersome and awkward to deploy and you lose the benefit of flip up compactness when street shooting. This Sony screen is by far the best compromise for vloggers and still shooters.

I just bought the a6400 tonight. Can't wait for it to be delivered. I was a bit concerned about the missing IBIS, but I thought the same way about it that I'd rather have a newer camera and invest in a gimbal than getting the a6500 missing out on a lot of the awesome features of the a6400 which you mentioned.
Best of all, I really got an amazing deal, pretty much getting the camera for half of the retail price with two lenses included and I will hopefully also get a cashback for it, so in the end, it will come down to around 496 USD.
This will be my first mirrorless, changing from an a58 which did me good services over the years being my first DSLR, but now the time has come for mirrorless and I am really excited about it.

I used to work at one of the top camera rental shops in NYC... for 14+ years, I could shoot with virtually any camera system. I was forced into early retirement due to a disability, and the only camera I personally owned was the A6000 with the kit lens. And a bunch of GoPros (but they don't count :-))... YIKES!!! I was waiting for the refresh of the A6500, but my sister enlisted me as the main, albeit somewhat slow, photographer for my nephew's wedding in mid-April. I just ordered the A6400 along with two of the 3 Sigma lenses (I bought them from FotoCare... I will use your link for gear in the future; I like supporting 'brick & mortar' shops for most things, but I know you have bills to pay). Thank you for such a great review: I started shooting with a Canon F1N in the mid-80s, pre-IS... in fact, PRE-AF! Shot Woodstock '99 for Canon & Kodak using a DCS-560, when reading histograms was a prerequisite. The young whippersnappers of today... IBIS... sounds like a type of bird... why, when I was your age... :-). Thank you again for all you do for us... and best to you and your beautiful family!!!!

I picked the a6500 as the upgrade for my a6000. The selling point was IBIS.
Thing is, I don't vlog, and I don't often even shoot video. Stills almost all the way, and sometimes with manual lenses that I could not previously hand-hold without a firm elbow rest. I can drool over the new eye-auto-focus and the my-menu --- but I still went for IBIS
And... I did not wait for everything to come in a new a6700/a7000/aWhatever simply because the a6500 has now become affordable to me: that new wonder model will not be.

Same as a stills shooter, found an affordable used a6500 body under warranty. The ability to use 3rd party lenses in low light handheld at extremely low shutter speeds >> 6400's features which are vlogger focused. To each their own.

I did not yet see the entire video but a reason you DID NOT MENTION and most reviews do not mention but is very important to me is the fill-in flash. I have always loved them on cameras for when I need just that little bit of extra light and do not want to take the time looking for and setting up a flash. I love them but others do not seem to, because it is almost NEVER mentioned in reviews.

I had my a6000 for about 5 years. Served me well however I did notice a few overheating issues where the video would literally cut, stop recording and camera completely shutting off. I've done things to go around it like opening the battery lid compartment and pulling out the LCD screen to cool it down, but those are the perks of buying cameras nowadays packed with so much technology in such a compact form factor. It's finally died on me with a crack in the viewfinder, and after changing the settings back to my viewfinder (which I previously turned off) to test it, the LCD is no longer working and there's no way going back to the settings to turn it back on. I'm hoping the a6400 would give me a better experience, because the a6000 was a joy to use and lens selections is far ahead against competitors. It'd also be a hassle to re-sell my Sony lenses only to buy more for a totally new camera system other than Sony. For me, it wasn't a hard choice.

Well in Hong Kong, I find both are selling for around the same at less than $850, but the a6500 being an older model the depreciation rate would be much lower than the a6400. Plus I only use the non-stabilized sigma lenses. Color science could be corrected in post. I don’t do much sport so autofocus is not as important. I think I will upgrade to a6500 from my current a6000.

Sony should come out with an external stereo video/vlogging mic for the A6400 that plugs into the hot-shoe but doesn't block the lens. The cage options for the A6400 are awesome. I've heard that you can use the USB C port as a headphone jack, but you've got sound level indicators on the screen, so you can see if the camera is recording sound and at what level it is recording. Overall, great camera and great review! Might have to upgrade my A6300.

Great review! Up to now, most reviewers have been crybabies that this camera isn't an A6700/A7000, but it's actually a genius move by Sony to get newbies into their APS-C platform, or even get A6000 owners like me with shallow pockets to think about stepping up. Honestly, when the price of a camera goes north of $1000, I start looking at the A7iii. I had no interest in moving from my excellent A6000 to the 6300/6500. They didn't offer enough to think about spending that kind of money. But the AF system and price of the 6400 has me looking at my budget. I don't do video much at all, and I've never noticed a problem with shake in my photos, so IBIS isn't a necessity. What really got me was the Eye/Face/Object AF and performance upgrade you noticed using the Sigma 30. I've moved my rig to the A6000 and the 3 Sigma APS-C lenses (16, 30 and 56), and the 6400 is the first body that I'd consider buying now if I'm staying in APS-C. Thanks for another EXCELLENT review!

I have an a7R II and that is why I upgraded from 6000 to the 6500 last year. The 6000 is the real bargain, but when the light isn't on your side, the answer is IBIS. In the mean time I also bought a Lumix G9. When Sony bring out a 6600 with IBIS plus High Resolution and a nice bright big EVF as already available on the LUMIX G9 and coming soon on the A7R IV, I'll be at the front of the queue. After using a G9, it is clear that Sony are miles behind in terms of good EVF.

Regarding the mic and display issue, many don’t know that some mic manufactures (such as Audio Technica) produce compact mics that pretty much just stick out of the 3.5 jack and can be turned in different directions. That may not be ideal when you need stereo sound, but for most people doing mono audio, that’s a super nice solution that doesn’t require getting any extra parts because no hot shoe/cold shoe mounting is needed.

In all honestly I've found the ibis on APSC is a bit of a gimmick, it helps a tad but people expect it to be that super stable level of ibis found in the full frames but its not the case, the travel is a significant amount smaller. If you want proper ibis pick up a Sony a7/a9 range.

Another great review. Thanks. I did just buy an a6500 and still happy with my choice. I assume I can correct colors in Lightroom, which was the major thing I cared about. I also wanted IBIS because I shoot handheld a lot and I have several Sigma lenses with EF mount from my Canon cameras. And I do shoot sports a lot (well, circus shows mostly, which is kind of like sports), so having larger buffer is nice. But it is great to know all the benefits of a6400. If Sony comes up with the a6600 that includes IBIS, might be worth an upgrade.

I might upgrade my A6300 to A6400 in some near future, very interesting comparison review! one of the biggest small disappointments to me was lack of SD UHSII slot.... quite a bummer. Instead, they keep obsolete Memory Stick for some reason. I can't understand that. There is virtually no cost to adding UHSII support, except for marketing/product positioning reasons.

Great video man! Was contemplating the Sony 35mm lens and the 18-105 to have a good range for the A6400 I am going to order. I am going to be doing a lot of video, vlogging and photography. Should I do a Sigma 30mm instead? Was only doing the Sony lens because of the OSS. It’s not that big a deal though?

Great job on the video, I'm shooting short videos and more interested in low light so it's actually a toss up between used A7 original model with small body as a second camera vs A6400. This is really nice to know they did such a good job on the 6400 though.
I second the flip up screen, it makes people's eyes open up just a bit wider and brighter.

It rides with me in my backpack 24/7, and I have had 0 issues even with the motion/banging around. Probably 5k pictures taken. I don't do a lot of video, but the lack of stabilization has been no issue for pictures. the sigma 56 is insane sharp. The only downside is that if you want to use silent shutter inside, it's literally not usable. But if that's not an issue, then stop messing around and get it :)

Excellent videos. I had ordered an a5100. After I saw your a6100 vid, I cancelled the order and ordered one w/kit lens. Then I saw your a6400 videos; cancelled the a6100 and ordered an a6400 with severe buyer's remorse. Until I saw your other 6400 videos. Now; I will NOT cancel and am waiting for my new a6400 w/50-135, and plan to get a Sigma 30mm. Yippie! My first good camera was a Canon AE1 Program. My last really great camera was a Canon F1 which I dumped for $100.How about reviewing streaming hardware w/s6400; HDMI to USB vs HDMI to h264/H265.
Lastly, the Sony camera has WiFi. It records using h264 (old should upgrade to h265). So why cannot they make it send h264 or h265 over the USB or WiFI? Thanks for the reviews!

Was wondering about your opinion. I just purchased the A6400 and A6500 - like to have a lightweight setup for travel. Lenses: Sony 10-18mm f4, OSS; Sigma 16mm f.14; Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. My original thought was to use the A6400 for video and the A6500 for photos. I am thinking about returning the A6500 after watching this video, getting another A6400 + Sony 35mm f.18 OSS (or the Sigma 30mm). What do you think?

The Sony website shows specs for the a6500, a9, and a6400. They all indicate that these three cameras use the BionZ X processor. Sony may very well have updated the algorithms in the A9 and a6400 though.

Hey Dear, first if all I’d like to say that you and your wife and your beloved baby has been awesome to watch. Thanks for sharing your valuable reviews. One of the best. 👌🏼
I bought A6400 last weekend and i have been trying everything according to manual. I am hugely stressed about the Auto Focus! I am a professional and have been over 20+ years, Canon user and medium and large format photography. I like using manual focus most of the time but Sony (I thought) has something spectacular with this camera. Eye Focusing, Tracking etc. Well, lets say it this way, as much i’d like to think it is me but out of 100+ photos, i can only find a bunch of photos are in focus.
I have the 16-50mm kit lens came with it. Now the question is, is it the lens? But in manual focus and recording videos are fine. It is actually fairly sharp and nice lens. Fits well with a compact camera.
Should i try another lens? Or upgrade this to A7 mkIII? Or change the camera? I want to use it mostly for videos with my Gimbal, yes the videos are fine but a lot to pay just for a video! I’d love to hear your suggestions please.
    Thanks a million. 🙏🏼

Superb video! Please keep creating great content! Specially AWB lock was new to me, even after watching dozens of a6400 videos... Fully agree with the pros. Could you address following topics in your next video :
    1. Eyeaf using the sigma 30mm 1.4 lense. Missing the IBIS when using the sigma indoors?
    2. How good is the smartphone pairing with the new imaging edge app?
    3. How is the video transfer to smartphone using the new imaging edge app? (this could have been a reason #14) do you have the feeling that imaging edge will be offering the other capabilities that playmemories app had?
    4. Battery drain when using the Bluetooth pairing to geolocate the pictures?
    5. Capability of rating pictures on camera. Is the rating visible /can be imported in light room or capture one?
6.light metering mode highlight (could be a reason #15).
It is just a pity the other a6x00 cameras do not get the features of the a6400 which are not requiring the higher computing power of the new processor. I can't believe that color science, highlight metering or AWB lock require a high end processor. The change in the internal Operating System is not reason enough to abandon users of previous models.

i have used gimbal with no stabilization on camera with sigma lenses. it requires lot of work to keep the video stable, and sorry to say it does not work. that's why i am investing in sony a6500. in addition, at lower shutter speeds, i am not satisfied with the images due to a bit of shakiness. again, ibis will rescue me. its just a feature but very relevant in photography and filmmaking.

Another outstanding review! I find my new a6400 is giving new life to my old Canon glass. The 70-300l is terrific with the mc11 on the a6400, perhaps even better than on the 70d. Might have something to do with a weaker anti-aliasing filter on the Sony. As you know the mc11 with Canon lenses on the a6000 is virtually unusable. The modified ef-s 24 2.8 in another winner with the a6400. Haven’t modified (butchered) the ef-s 10-18 yet. Keep up the great reviews and tips.

(Long comment - sorry.) Don't get me wrong. If you shoot video these 13 points do indicate the a6400 may be better for you. Also if you're upgrading from the a6000 or a6300 this would be a great upgrade. But I don't shoot video so many of the 13 points don't apply to me. I thought I'd share these comments in case others are in the same situation. So why am I even looking at the a6400?
I'm looking for a second camera for my portrait hobby, and I sometimes shoot sports. The key difference for me is IBIS and/or lenses with OSS.
    TechnologyMafia's 13 items...
    1) New processor. I actually don't think the a6400 does have a new processor. According to the Sony web site the A6400 has the BIONZ X processor - same as the a6500 and A9. It may have updated software though. The a9 says it has updated algorithms. At any rate it does seem to be a bit faster.
    2) Improved color science. Actually this is a negative for me. If I shoot a portrait session with both the a6400 and a6500 I'd have to deal with skin tones being different from the two cameras.
    3) Auto focus enhancements. I definitely would like to have these improvements.
This is what is attracting me to look at the a6400. EyeAF without holding a button would be great.
    4) Flip up screen. As I don't Vlog or take selfies this is a non issue for me.
    5) Interval shooting. I have the free time-lapse app installed on my a6500 so I already have the feature. But honestly I don't do interval shooting.
    I played with it once.
    6) Improved menu system. I'd like that but it isn't a game changer.
    7) No Record Limit. As I don't shoot video this is a non issue for me.
    8) Runs cooler. As I don't shoot video this is a non issue for me.
    9) HLG for video. As I don't shoot video this is a non issue for me.
    10) Battery life. Better but still not good. I've learned to deal with it. Not a game changer.
    11) No dim screen. As I don't shoot video this is a non issue for me.
    12) Auto white balance lock. Nice feature. I use a grey card and custom WB. Not a game changer. Shows actual ISO. Nice little change.
    13) Price. Yes I'd like a new camera but will settle for a used a6500 for about the same price.
    Why an a6500 is better
    for me
    1) Has IBIS . This is the big one for me. I have six lenses. Three are Sony with OSS but they are not my good lenses. The other three are Sigma without OIS. They work fine on the a6500 but would result in a lower good quality image count with the a6400. I tried using my Sigma lenses with the a6500 and IBIS turned off and the results weren't good.
    2) Extra custom button. Nice but not a game changer.
    3) Deeper buffer. The a6400 buffer may be deep enough but I have often filled the a6500 buffer. A smaller buffer would clear more quickly.
Not a game changer. If your coming from the a6000 or a6300 this would be great.
So for me it's all about stabilization. I'm going with a used a6500 for my second camera. But truthfully I like new things and the a6400 isn't out of the running.

I shoot 90/10 still vs video & that's the reason I will not trade my A6500 for A6400. IBIS is crucial for non native lenses. Yes the better buffer n grip is a real bonus too. A6500 suits me much better.
