I love the way you actually replied every single person in the comment section mostly peoples don't do this even i had some questions and i already found someone in the comment section who already asked you the same question and i got the answer without even commenting and waiting for your reply your new subscriber 😍😍
I was actually just looking at the differences between the two and after a lot of back and forth, I finally settled for the a6400. Your video really helped cement that I've made the right choice!
I definitely think you made the right call! It really is a better camera in my opinion. I can’t wait until the next apsc camera comes out and it’s basically the a6500 with all the new stuff from the a6400
I was thinking getting a6500 before but with limit on 4K and over heating I went with G85 then when a6400 came out it did not have 4K limit and no over heating so I bought a6400 and very happy I did.
I’m glad you’re loving the a6400. Also, just for the sake of sharing, there’s not really any overheating problem on the a6500 and there’s an app (hack) you can install to override the record limit on it too. So you could have used the a6500. But I think you’re better off now anyway 😉
It appears that most of the points refer mainly to video rather than photography. I personally have had a shaky hand increase iver the years and the IBIS on the a6500 makes all the difference. I think the a6400 is a great camera but IBIS is a game changer, especially with lenses lacking the Image Stabilization. Great review!😊
which camera should i buy a6500 and a6400 i am little bit confused because a6500 lauched before a6400 i think it is accending order that a6300,a6400,a6500,a6600,a6700, but i know today that a6500 launched in 2016 and a6400 launched in 2019 then i have three to four options sony a7ii, a7rii,a7sii,a6400,a6500 am so confused because i am buying my first camera and i want to buy a sony camera not canon not nikon because the content creators which use the high professional mirrorless camera like canon eos r5,6,they also switched to sony due to autofocus i hope u guide ,me ...............................
I want to use older telephoto lenses and telescopes with an adapter to e-mount. The 6500 has a 5 axis in-body image stabilization. This was well explained here. Telephoto Sony lenses cost more than my first car.
Having the Sigma 1.4 trio (with no OSS), the a6500 was a no brainer for me. Its great to have the IBIS to be able to lower the shutter and shoot with less noise at native ISO.
@@dunnadidit Yeah, guess I would too, if it wasnt for Sony pricing in Europe the a6600 at a crazy high USD1800...! I got a second hand a6500 with low shutter count and mint condition for only USD700. I am saving that USD1100 for more glass instead. Cheers.
Reasons to get the a6400: - Flip up screen - Improved Auto-focus - No screen deeming - Color Science - Improved Menus Reasons to get the 6500 - In body stabilization - app functionality - custom button - accessories - more option if you want to buy used
@@maayaantow1034 For me A6500.. That ibis will remove the micro jitters for non oss lens.. and no matter what gimbal you use if you have no oss or Ibis it will show.. Plus if you have full frame surely you have lenses with no oss so having a crop sensor with ibis is kind of a great back up..
I use a5100's and don't shoot 4k. Am upgrading to a6400. Flip screen, touch focus and better AF is main reason. I also think it will play well with my a5100's. Great show as always!
Narrow Path - yeah the rolling shutter on all the Sony apsc stuff is pretty rough. But just being a bit careful seems to do the trick for me. My stuff is also mostly for RUclips so it’s not a huge stress for me if there’s a bit going on.
Bro. I was convinced i was going to get an a6400 but i did not realize it didn’t have two custom modes on the dial, which i use ALL the time. I used a 6400 a couple of months ago cause i wanted to film an event and it has no recording limit and better heat management but damn that sucks that they nerfed the custom modes amount. Great review!
There is a bit of a workaround for that I believe. You still get the one custom mode with a few sub-custom modes. But I think every time you format your card the sub ones disappear (I think)
On the A6400 there are now 3 memory recalls under the recall dial position (MR) which only requires a couple of extra button presses (only takes a couple of seconds). they are saved to the camera's internal memory too, there is still the additional 4 SD card saved memory recalls as well. so actually one more memory recall than the A6500.
Totally, but I honestly find myself not using them because of those extra couple button presses. It feels clunky and inconvenient to me. But you’re right, it is there!
@@dunnadidit Personally I never use the memory recall because it locks the white balance!!!! You can still dial in a temp but the set white balance feature is greyed out which is completely dumb the point of the memory recall is ruined by not being able to grab a white balance from white/gray card etc - I really hoped they would have fixed that in the a6400 etc.
Great comparison man! Answers most of my questions about the two. But one more thing, is the AF in a6400 really THAT good? Or is it something of an incremental increase from the a6500? I really want the a6400 because of its new features, but the lack of IBIS is kind of a turn off and IBIS has been very helpful to me
you had me at number 2 . I'm sick of my pano and canon cameras, focus hunting and focus breathing. I just can't trust them to get the shot that I need, especially when it's a one time deal thing. most of my stuff I can get again but on the odd occasion, you don't get that chance. nothing is more infuriating then running through an edit and seeing THAT shot out of focus and having to edit around it. a real pisser.
I hear you... now I just have to start to remember to turn autofocus back on after I do a manual focus shot. I have a tendency to lose shots from user error 😞
I'm waiting for the a6500 successor. There has been so many rumors about it right now, so to buy the a6400 seems odd. Remember that Sony launched the a6500 less than a year after the a6300.
Yeah I’m excited for it too! The rumors were around long before even the a6400 though lol. Hopefully next week’s announcement is something new for apsc.
Dunna Did It what is next weeks announcement? I thought the three registered cameras that were rumored were supposed to all be announce on the 16th/17th? It ended up only being one announcement.
Still praying for the a6700/a7000 to be announced soon that will hopefully carry the best of both worlds! That's when I'll get into photography, but it seems like a legend by now. "Son, I lived in the days that the people of planet Earth spoke of the a7000"
My primary camera is A7R iii and the default lens is 24-105 when I travel. I like to carry a second camera for longer reach but concern the weight. I own an A6000, and like to upgrade to a newer model. I don’t do video and too ugly to want to see myself on the screen. Thank you for the clear comparison. I don’t carry GM lenses, they are too heavy so an used A6500+70-300 will be perfect for my need. Maybe an extra 35 or 55 prime. Look forward to retire, travel and shoot a lot of memory.
A6500. IBIS and purchasing a mint deal used! In saying that, would love if sony had designed it so you could purchase and install either a flip screen or a simple tilt screen. Like a plug and play. Screw in the hardware. Done. That would be cool!
Good indeed. Yes the screen dimming in the A6500 on 4k is disconcerting, and I have had a tendency to up the exposure, to my regret later. Also the A6500 menu, it takes constant use for several months before you can go everywhere you like. For instance. You are in a quiet room, and you want to turn the focusing and shutter sound off >> where is it ?? Group 2, page 9 I think. But isn't that absurd. Whenever I see someone struggling with a small black camera I think. Yes, there he is trying to start up the A6500. But these cameras are good and small still. I hold the A6500 with the pancake 16mm lens in one hand, it is totally non-threatening on the street.
Totally agree! I don’t seem to find the menus as confusing as some people and I don’t have anything memorized by any means. But there is a lot going on in there so I can see what people are talking about. And yeah, I think that’s one of the reasons I haven’t gone full frame... I really enjoy the compact size of these cameras!
I knew that the the rolling shutter is really bad in the all the Sony APS-C cameras, but now after half a year I can say that it really does affect my workflow negatively
I know this is an old video but I I can choose the 6500 or a 6100 for the same price. Is there any reason to pick the 6100? I mostly use my ZV1 for video and just want this for photography. Your videos are always great! Thanks!
Great question. If you’re going for only photography, I’d say that the a6500 is the one to go for! You get some features that you lose on the a6100 like the flip screen but that matters less for photos anyway. Hope that helps!
@@dunnadidit Thanks for the reply. I found the 6500 for $999 CDN and it seemed like the best photography option as even the 6400 was a couple hundred more... but I thought I’d get your opinion.
Hi Dunna! Is worth to mention that the autofocus is that perfect when you have decent glass and controlled light Sadly I had to got rid of my A6500 basically because the the menus are kind of 1995 tech and the handling was made for little Japanese hands, and the ibis wasn't that good (that's from photography perspective). For Video the camera is a beast autofocus and image quality but the dim screen you mention and some overheating issues made me jump in to the Panasonic G9 and my workflow has improved a lot. However, I really miss the Sony's near perfect autofocus in some situations. Best Regards.
I'm a wedding videographer and I bought the A6300 as my gimbal cam over the A6400 and the A6500. Why over the A6400? No mode dial C1 & C2. Menu system does not matter to me as I always pre-set my cameras before shooting, that is also why the mode dials that are missing is a big loss. As of the moment, I don't care now about the picture profiles, I found that the SOOC is fine enough for the type of shooting I do. I'd want the autofocus, but then again, I don't generally trust autofocus and find myself always checking the focus. Flip-up screens are for vloggers, I need a fully articulating screen. Why over the A6500? All I'm getting are the touch screen and the IBIS. I use a Panasonic cam as my main cam, and I never use the touch screen for shooting purposes, even in menus I don't use it. It's turned off right now in my cam. IBIS... isn't important to me. The cam will be for my gimbal, I turn off the IBIS or any IS when I have the cam on my gimbal. So, if I bought the A6500, I'll be using it as an A6300 basically.
Can't Sony issue a firmware upgrade for the a6500 for their improved color science if they choose too. Although highly doubtful I guess. Most videos show not much difference with Sony's IBIS vs. none but your shots definitely had a noticicable difference between the two. Where you using a non stabilized lens on both or stabilized?
I think the color science has at least something to do with the sensor physically. I don’t think it’s just a software thing. As far as ibis, I was using the sigma 30mm f1.4(no oss) for the plant shot, and the sigma 16mm f1.4(no oss) for the vlogging style shot).
@@dunnadidit Cool, I actually use the Sigma 30mm on my a6500. I was curious what it be like on a Sony without IBIS. Knowing how Sony's IBIS is definitely not the best, it was definitely a noticeable difference from the a6400. Interesting about the colors. I would have thought it was all software related but really have no clue about that stuff. Thanks man!
@@FunWithTheBugs I think the color balance can be adjusted "modified" in three ways; sensor bayer filtering, firmware color processor or PS post-processor.
Currently thinking of selling my 6500 for a 6400 at the moment. The screen dimming and no flip screen are a deal breaker for me. Not having IBIS is not a big deal if you use a tripod or a gimbal and if you want to do handheld you can always use a lens with stabilization.
Dunna Did It yeah, I can understand that. Smallrig sells arca plates with 2 screws to go into the bottom of the cage. I would love to see the plate in the cage though too cause then y have access to the screw holes and the plate at the same time.
Danke. It's a hard decision. I have a6000 and learn them for some years. In EU it is expensiv, much money, a6400 and a6500 very much. So what. Thinking and thinking. FujiFilm is also very good. And much money also.
Thanks man for breaking this down. As we discussed on Twitter, I don't think there is enough to sway me from a6500 to a6400 but if you are buying one or the other the a6400 definitely makes the decision more difficult lol.
@@dunnadidit i have 2 x A6500 and do as much photography as video. When I used the control cable on the Weebill Lab gimbal it switches off IBIS and you really notices the difference. I was concerned because 6400 has no IBIS how that would work ? But the autofocus looks really good on 6400 was thinking of selling one and having one of each ? Not going FF cause I dont want to buy lenses again and im happy with the quality.
Very interesting, I didn’t notice the ibis turning off, just the face detect autofocus. I almost never use the connection cable when using a gimbal. I don’t find it helps my workflow very much so I just skip it.
@@dunnadidit being able to control the camera from your phone, move focus point, iso, aperture without touching camera is really handy on a gimbal. I contacted Zhiyun and they confirmed that cable will switch off IBIS which made me wonder if your on a gimbal theoretically footage should be stable without IBIS but it was terrible.
Thank you for a well-prepared comparison. Much to consider. $300 more for IBIS might be worth the choice. Doesn’t the a6500 use the longer-life battery? That might be another reason to opt for the 65. Right now (04/21) nobody seems to have any a6400s in stock, while a6500s seem plentiful. A crafty ploy by Sony to steer customers toward an oversupply of 6500s? Oh, no. Sony would NEVER do that...would they?
In august I purchased the a6400 bundle for 989.99. I seen the a6500 later n thought F***! But now watching this video I’m glad I purchased the a6400. I love this camera. Ion like the kit lens like that my preference but over all FANTASTIC CAMERA.
I hope you’re still answering comments 😭 I want to shoot makeup tutorials, vlogs, and take both wide-lens and portrait photos. Would this camera be the better option as opposed to the Canon g7x? What lens would you suggest getting for it additional to the 18-135 mm kit lens?
Yeah it would be an upgrade from the 1” sensor in the G7x for sure. The 18-135 would be a good versatile lens for pretty much anything, but if you want a better portrait lens while you’re at it, look at the sigma 56mm f1.4
I received a free a6000 with two lenses. Im planning on selling the two lenses and the body in order to upgrade to either a6500 or the a6400 (reason im stickin to aps-c is i already have two sigma lenses 30mm and 16mm) so im just looking for a more of a picture quality/feature update. In my situation, if you could find the a6500 and a6400 at the SAME price, which would you choose to upgrade to? I don't do any video, just photography - landscape, portraits, etc.
OMG, I was planning to buy 6500 because i thought this is the new model. But now i got to know 6400 is the latest, and dont have image stabilization (Got confused now)
The a6400 is technically an upgrade of the a6300, thats why it has some new features but not IBIS. I assume they will come out with an upgrade to the a6500 soon.
The answer for those who already have one is to wait, save more, and don't upgrade until a6500 successor or whatever unicorn a7000 comes out. It's should be out within this 2 months
@@dunnadidit yup you're happy now until there's a6500 successor. Savor the moment my friend. I know this because you have 6500 instead of 6300. I also know the G.A.S is with you. IBIS just makes 3 sigma's and FE lenses shine bright like a diamond.
We are looking into a a6400 and just wondering with the a6500 that ibis is it just for video or does it help when taking stills at zoom? as we would use this for stills mostly and a little video. Should the a6400 be fine or wait for the new a6500 model?
Oh boiii this is a hard choice, after considering a6600, I have this feeling I do not need the new tech always. Brand new a6500 and a6400 from where I am the difference is only $220. Having a hard time here :/
I currently use a canon t5i as my everything camera (projects & personal). I want to switch to sony, but until i can afford an a7iii i think making the switch would be beneficial and the a6500 seems more reliable to be my work horse. Enjoying the content brother, showing love from Arizona
Sounds like a solid plan. The cool thing too is that with the a6500 you can start to invest in Sony full frame glass. So when you’re ready to go full frame, you’ve already got lenses!
The main dealbreakers in favour of A6400: No overheating, and no video recording limit. As for the IBIS: If using OSS on A6400 it really does not make any difference. Perhaps slightly when using telephoto lenses.
@@dunnadidit I believe you. The hack I know about. The overheating I am still not sure about. But A6400 still seems to be a better deal granted many other features. And as IBIS goes, OSS should take care of it. Not that I will get twice the amount of stabilization with IBIS+OSS since stabilization would be split between the two.
Haha I’m definitely on board with the a6400 too, just wanted to make sure you knew those things 😁 I have NEVER had the a6500 overheat and shut down. Even after shooting 4k for 45 min straight in a hot room.
@@dunnadidit Will go for the A6400. Do you think the kit lens (PZ 16-50/3,5-5,6 OSS) will hamper the full potential of the A6400? Or will it be fine for my main uses, like filming our gigs, maybe some PR shooting etc.? I will tap the audio from elsewhere. I am a fairly noob photographer.
Awesome reviews!! Help a bunch. I have two a6500’s and was gonna get an a6400 as a third angle for my videos. BUT, I think I’ll wait till the a6500 predecessor is announced.
My impatience got the best of me!! LOL I went and got the a6400 today. The autofocus alone makes it worth it. Gonna do a review on my channel soon!! Thanks again!!
Great videos! You helped me settle on an a6400 and Sigma 16mm 1.4. Also, did you make your own social media and title transitions or do you have a recommended place to get them? Really liked how smooth and minimal they felt.
I want to get the a6400. With autofocus, do you think it makes a better ronin camera than the a6500? I have two a6500's, I want to get an a7iii as either the main camera or a ronin camera, use my two a6500's as a secondary/static camera, and an a6400 as either a secondary or ronin. What do you think? This is all for weddings if you haven't gathered that, haha. Edit: You kinda answered it with the stabilization advice. Back to a6400 as a secondary/static like I was thinking.
it will look like in a gimbal but with micro jitters.. See most of the videos with a6400 with gimbal and 30mm f1.4 lens.. not the slowed ones but the regular speed you can see the micro jitters..
Hey I’m looking to buy a Sony beginner… mostly for content / studio sessions / street photos for ig / events Would you recommend Sony a6400 a6500 or zve10
I have A6500. I like to have IBIS. I make RUclips video content, but I don’t vblog. Don’t need A6400 with flip up screen. Waiting for successor to A6500.
Didnt know you are in Edmonton, thats pretty dope. I went with the 6400 myself mainly for the flip up screen. Also on a gimbal the lack of in body stabilization isnt much of a factor combined with a OSS lens.
First no IBIS, now having only 1 memory recall? Uhm, this is going to slow me down when shooting a wedding where every seconds count or else you will miss the shot.. I setup my 2 memory recall for 60p and 24p.. I dont want to dig into the menus to adjust those and the shutter speed.. I want this settings on memory for quick option.. now Finally decided to get the a6500..
I had the A6000 and sold it a year ago to get Canon M50. I sold all the lenses I had and the batteries. Is it worth switching from the Canon M50 back to the Sony Alpha world and get the A6400. I like vlogging and taking pictures.
Looking for some help here. I was unsure about which camera to get and after my research plus this video I think I'm gonna go with the 6400. I'll be self filming hunts which means low light sometimes. What lens should I get? Not looking to spend a ton of money, but I want a lens that will function well in that situation.
6500 all the way. I never use video on my camera so the ibis is important to me for photos. I have the XT3 and it's amazing but to many blurry pics compared to my A6500.
Great video. I can't wait to get my Sony a6400 (18-135 mm kit) I don't have it yet, but I already think about future upgrades (lenses). What about the 16mm Sigma lens? For photography (architecture) Due to the fact that it is not a stabilized lens is there a risk that images will shaked with Hand-Held Photos?
Great review but I have a question... The 6500 has in camera Image-stabilization and the 6400 does no, but say a 18-105/f4 has built in IS. So which is better built in camera or in lens? What happens when you use the in camera stabilization and a lens with IS?
Great comparison, thanks a lot. inbuilt image stabilisation and autofocus, my two main functionalities. Hence compared with the insane autofocus of the 6400, how much tradeoff is there using the 6500? Cheers.
It’s a tough one. The a6500 has great autofocus as is, but the a6400 is better for sure. If I had to go back to the a6500 now I’d probably miss it but if I didn’t know the a6400 autofocus I would still be totally happy.
@@dunnadidit Cool, man. One question, you're talking 6400, what is it? (Nah, just messing with you. I go the answer I needed. No more second opinion now. Or was it the first? I guess it was the third, right?) ;-)

I’m thinking about buying the A6400 with the 18-105 lens. This lens has stabilization so the no ibis problem will be fixed a little bit. Do you recommend this combo?
I love love love your video, Thanks 🙏🏽 I have made up my mind to buy the a6400 But I am worried if the imaging app is still not working properly on the phone like you mentioned in the video😨😨 Controlling cam from the phone would be great
Hi sir! I don’t know what camera to buy 😅 I am only interested in video making, particulate “cinematic” and smooth travel videos. I’m planning to buy a gimbal as well. This combined with the Sony 18-105 mm f4 lens. My main goal is to get smooth video (Brandon li) style. Should I buy the a6500 or The A6400? Or even the a6600? I’d prefer to go with the cheapest option but will I get smooth video with the A6400 with a gimbal and a lens with oss? I hope you can find some time to answer.
I would say go with the a6400 if you're going to get the 18-105. You'll have the OSS of the lens. Here's a video I shot most of with that combo exactly. ruclips.net/video/d3n7kAOdBBw/видео.html
I’m interested in bird photography and stability with telephoto lenses. If I’m reading you right, the a6600 would be a better choice for me because the IBIS will help with sharper photos. Correct ? Thanks so much.🙂👏🏻. Good review.👍 I’ve heard the Sony bodies turn off OSS if you have IBIS on board. Someone else says they work together. What are your thoughts on this. Both can’t be right.
Question: can you use back button focus and exposure lock at the same time on the a6400 (separate button assigned to each function)? I had to get rid of my Panasonic GX 85 because I wasn't able to do this. Anyone know...? Thanks.
hello there Mr Dunna Did it , just wanna ask, i'm a content creator on instagram, i'm so dilema choosing a6400 or a6500 for making a content , like take a ootd photos , and reels video, using a tripod, which do your prefer sir , thankyou somuch if you want to answer me .
Love ur videos dunna learned a lot from u! Keep up the great work! Question for u what has prevented u from jumping from to full frame? Like u said in ur video a lot of people r selling them a6500 for th a7iii. Now that u have the A6400 for vlogging y not jump to full frame?
Thanks so much! A lot of it has to do with price of switching. It’s a lot more than just the body. But also, the quality from these apsc cameras is great, I haven’t had enough of a reason to jump yet... but I’m always pondering it lol.
I take photos and video and if only the a6400 had IBIS then the decision would be made. I have a Canon 6d right now but just want IBIS, what bodies would you suggest me looking at (any brand) preferably under 1,700$.
I have sigma lenses without OSS. I mostly do stills. You show IBIS is better for video. Is IBIS better for stills too, for example stills with my sigmas that don't have OSS?
Ibis can help with stills, especially in low light situations where you may need a slower shutter speed for more light. It helps to reduce the shake of your hand.
The unlimited recording on the a6400 suits my needs as i record long plays. around 4-6 hours uninterrupted. Though the sony ax53 camcorder is also tempting. Can you do a comparison between the sony ax53 camcorder vs sony a6400?
San Ghuloom I have the Ax53 - get the A6400, the Autofocus is extremely slow on the AX53 - plus you have manual control on the A6400 and a vastly bigger sensor .
San Ghuloom ps, use a USB power bank if you want to go beyond the normal battery (you’ll get approximately 22 hours - uses about 4% an hour ) from another video based on there experience.
Yes that's amazing, I just wonder if the batery will last that 4-6 hours of recording, anyway I imagine you use a external power bank conected to the camera if not would be dificult to not stop the video for changing to another batery. I am thinking to buy the a6400 though
Other than vlogging I see no reason to choose the a6500 over the 6400. I do very little video, I think the confusing part is that the sony a7 series has come way down in price and that further complicates my decision making. FF vs APSC! Right now I lean to the a6400 but FF is close, I also have quite a few vintage lenses that would work on both formats
The ibis is the biggest thing for sure, but not just vlogging, any kind of video work, or low light shooting, or sports and wildlife since they use super long lenses. Ibis is more handy than people give it credit for 😉
We've just recently got the a6400, mostly for my girlfriend, but I find it a great camera for vlogging, b cam and as a smaller camera for photography. I was really scared of going down to aps-c from a7r2 but I feel like I might be growing up and actually realising that I can use both in a very similar way. Now just need to get some nice wide-angle lens that fits both FF and APSC :) Great video dude! Defo great info for people that can't decide!
Yeah, people have the wrong idea when it comes to apsc. As long as the light is decent, you should be able to achieve FANTASTIC results with apsc like you would on FF. Thanks for watching homie!
Thanks Dunna. If multiple faces are detected, is it possible to change between faces on the go? How responsive is the touch interface on the A6400? Does the A6400 expose for the face in face detect? It is quite difficult on the A6000, which prioritises a face and wants to stick to it. Without touch interface, I have to use flexible spot M, which slows down things considerably. No joysticks either on A6x00 series. I always use single shot mode in Af-c or Af-s. Thanks again. Would appreciate an answer.

Absolutely!! I’m thinking about the a6600 right now to get the best of both worlds.
@@dunnadidit Yeah, guess I would too, if it wasnt for Sony pricing in Europe the a6600 at a crazy high USD1800...! I got a second hand a6500 with low shutter count and mint condition for only USD700. I am saving that USD1100 for more glass instead. Cheers.
Wow! Thats nuts! Glad you found a good deal tho!
Reasons to get the a6400:
- Flip up screen
- Improved Auto-focus
- No screen deeming
- Color Science
- Improved Menus
Reasons to get the 6500
- In body stabilization
- app functionality
- custom button
- accessories
- more option if you want to buy used
Which would you says is better for filmmakers?
@@maayaantow1034 For me A6500.. That ibis will remove the micro jitters for non oss lens.. and no matter what gimbal you use if you have no oss or Ibis it will show.. Plus if you have full frame surely you have lenses with no oss so having a crop sensor with ibis is kind of a great back up..
Since I just recently got in this market. I want to thank you for this post. This was very informative.
I’m glad it was helpful Charles!
I use a5100's and don't shoot 4k. Am upgrading to a6400. Flip screen, touch focus and better AF is main reason. I also think it will play well with my a5100's. Great show as always!
the 4k video on the a6400 is unusable unless you don't move it at all. it has Horrid jello every time rolling shutter. I returned mine.
Thanks so much TexPat! I think you’ll love the a6400!
Narrow Path - yeah the rolling shutter on all the Sony apsc stuff is pretty rough. But just being a bit careful seems to do the trick for me. My stuff is also mostly for RUclips so it’s not a huge stress for me if there’s a bit going on.
That no record limit on the 6400 is a great feature.
I really want the a6400 because of its new features, but the lack of IBIS is kind of a turn off and IBIS has been very helpful to me
The autofocus is still pretty great in the a6500... if ibis is really important to you, you wont be dissapointed with the functions of the a6500.
Bro if i use SanDisk 80mbps for sony a6400 then will i suffer for it? Or i must have to buy 95/170mbps?
As long as it’s sdxc you should be okay.
@@dunnadidit thanks bro ✋😃
Glad your on RUclips! Thanks for breaking it down simple enough to understand. Cheers!
you had me at number 2 .
I picked the a6400 as the perfect partner for my a7iii - I have not regret that decision
That’s a killer combo!
Two things matter to me: AF beast and in-body stabilization. Why the heck can't I get both of these features in a pre-2021 Sony APS-C camera?????
Still praying for the a6700/a7000 to be announced soon that will hopefully carry the best of both worlds! That's when I'll get into photography, but it seems like a legend by now.
"Son, I lived in the days that the people of planet Earth spoke of the a7000"
Haha we’re all waiting impatiently!
A6600 was announced today, coming in November. I'll probably pick one up as a replacement for my Nikon D7000
Nice Matthew!!
@@matthewpero654 I'm so dissapointed by it. I will probably go for the X-T3
I’m so glad the video was helpful! Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out now!!
The review that i was waiting for!! Nice channel brooo
Glad to hear it!!! Thanks!
A6500. IBIS and purchasing a mint deal used!
In saying that, would love if sony had designed it so you could purchase and install either a flip screen or a simple tilt screen. Like a plug and play. Screw in the hardware. Done. That would be cool!
That would be very cool if you could mod your a6500 with a flip screen!
I would choose the a6500 for the IBIS and 120fps. In hopes Sony would update its firmware for eye af.
Couple of things... the a6400 has 120fps. And the a6500 has eye af(it’s not as good as the a6400 though) but that ibis is handy!
@@dunnadidit doesn't have Animal Eye AF though! Just give me an A6400 with IBIS!
Haha agreed!
Connor Sorrentino yes, it would’ve been nice. If they put IBIS in the a6400 nobody would buy the a6500 anymore. That’s why they left it out.
That flip up display convinced me. I think I'll go with the 6400
I shoot so much on it now.
Thank you so much for making it easier for me to choose between the two! :)
My pleasure
I knew that the the rolling shutter is really bad in the all the Sony APS-C cameras, but now after half a year I can say that it really does affect my workflow negatively
how does it affect it?
Hi Dunna!
Is worth to mention that the autofocus is that perfect when you have decent glass and controlled light
Sadly I had to got rid of my A6500 basically because the the menus are kind of 1995 tech and the handling was made for little Japanese hands, and the ibis wasn't that good (that's from photography perspective).
For Video the camera is a beast autofocus and image quality but the dim screen you mention and some overheating issues made me jump in to the Panasonic G9 and my workflow has improved a lot. However, I really miss the Sony's near perfect autofocus in some situations. Best Regards.
Thanks for your input! Definitely interesting to hear that perspective!
Thanks for preventing me from selling my A6400 for a A6500! 😅
Nice! Thanks for sharing
over heat? )
Nope! No problems with overheating. Just make sure the heat setting is on high.
I have a a6300 and love it but am in the market for a second camera to get multiple angles. It’s looking like the a6500 might be my choice
Nice! Hopefully this video was helpful for you!
@@FunWithTheBugs You could turn off the IBIS on the camera to check out Sigma's performance.
@@alansandercock9726 I could but since in the end I will still be using the a6500, it was just good to see the difference in this video.
Great video, bro! Very helpful towards making my decision.
Nice! Glad it was helpful!
Currently thinking of selling my 6500 for a 6400 at the moment. The screen dimming and no flip screen are a deal breaker for me. Not having IBIS is not a big deal if you use a tripod or a gimbal and if you want to do handheld you can always use a lens with stabilization.
me watching videos about the camera I should buy with just $44 in my account! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
Lol! I hear you!
try several thousands in negative balance ,,,,,,,youtubing is expansive lol
Dude i literally have around 40 dollars in my account and I'm thinking the same!

Me with £ 10 :)
But i don't need money im only 16 and recently make my own bank account
you rocks doing reviews and comparissons! i find my self that you can use the accessories from the a6000-6300 in the 6400, keep doing a excelent job!
Thanks so much! Yeah actually I used my a6500 cage on my a6400 for a bit. But it didn’t fit quite right and wiggles around a bit.
I use the smallrig ccs2310 cage. That’s an amazing one with the wooden handle specifically designed for the a6400.
The problem I have with that cage is that it doesn’t have the arca Swiss bottom plate like the older models did.
Yeah it’s tough to make decisions around this stuff when you have to invest so much money into it. Glad the video was helpful.
This video helped me a lot. Thank you😀. Really good video 👍
Thanks man for breaking this down. As we discussed on Twitter, I don't think there is enough to sway me from a6500 to a6400 but if you are buying one or the other the a6400 definitely makes the decision more difficult lol.
Haha totally! I was in the market for another camera anyway, so it made sense for me.
Great review and responses to questions!
Thanks a ton John!
Yeah it’s a bit confusing but the a6400 is the newer camera with newer features haha.
After my A7ii died didn't have the funds to get another so purchased an a6400 and gotta say as a primary shooter I love it.
Dope video bro. Very nice comparison. I have the 6300 and love it. I heard those two cameras are beasts too
Thanks dude! The a6300 is awesome too! It’s really the little brother of the a6400.
A6400 hands down.
Dunna Did It don’t get it, so 6400 is newer?
Correct. The a6500 is a few years old now and the a6400 only came out a few months ago.
The answer for those who already have one is to wait, save more, and don't upgrade until a6500 successor or whatever unicorn a7000 comes out. It's should be out within this 2 months
I’m super happy I got the a6400 even though I have 2 a6500’s definitely use it a lot!
@@dunnadidit yup you're happy now until there's a6500 successor. Savor the moment my friend. I know this because you have 6500 instead of 6300. I also know the G.A.S is with you. IBIS just makes 3 sigma's and FE lenses shine bright like a diamond.

Glad you found it valuable! Cheers!
We are looking into a a6400 and just wondering with the a6500 that ibis is it just for video or does it help when taking stills at zoom? as we would use this for stills mostly and a little video. Should the a6400 be fine or wait for the new a6500 model?

Haha nope! Apparently Sony releases cameras like George Lucas releases Star Wars movies... out of order.
Great video. I can't wait to get my Sony a6400 (18-135 mm kit)
I don't have it yet, but I already think about future upgrades (lenses). What about the 16mm Sigma lens? For photography (architecture) Due to the fact that it is not a stabilized lens is there a risk that images will shaked with Hand-Held Photos?
It shouldn’t be an issue with the 16mm for photography. I do lots of photos with the a6400 and they turn out great!
João Vitor Oliveira have fun with the sigma 16mm 1.4 and no IBIS
Great review but I have a question... The 6500 has in camera Image-stabilization and the 6400 does no, but say a 18-105/f4 has built in IS. So which is better built in camera or in lens? What happens when you use the in camera stabilization and a lens with IS?
In my experience, OSS and IBIS have nearly the same affect. And OSS+IBIS is even a little better.
I guess it was the third, right?) ;-)
Im so excited now to switch from Nikon D5300 (very OLD LOL) to A6400!!! Can't wait for it. I'll also make review on my channel. Thank you Dun! 😍
Thats awesome! Cheers!
@@dunnadidit This is the right time to switch! they are giving worth 250$ freebies! it includes Sony Noise Cancellation Bluetooth Headset + cash back.. OMG! 😲😍
I’m thinking about buying the A6400 with the 18-105 lens. This lens has stabilization so the no ibis problem will be fixed a little bit.
Do you recommend this combo?
Highly recommended! I used that exact combo on my recent vacation and it was fantastic!
How about the low light capabilities for videos ? Have you tested it which one is better ?
They will be nearly identical.
I love love love your video,
Thanks 🙏🏽
I have made up my mind to buy the a6400
But I am worried if the imaging app is still not working properly on the phone like you mentioned in the video😨😨
Controlling cam from the phone would be great
You can do it but it’s not a great experience from what I’ve had.
Should I buy the a6500 or
The A6400? Or even the a6600?
I’d prefer to go with the cheapest option but will I get smooth video with the A6400 with a gimbal and a lens with oss?
I hope you can find some time to answer.
I would say go with the a6400 if you're going to get the 18-105. You'll have the OSS of the lens. Here's a video I shot most of with that combo exactly. ruclips.net/video/d3n7kAOdBBw/видео.html
@@dunnadidit Thanks a lot for the quick response! I guess I will go with the sony a6400 then, nice video btw!
Which camera is the better one between the a7ii and a6400 mostly for photography but sometimes for videos but rarely and as my first camera?
A6400 in my opinion.
@@dunnadidit which one is better. Picture quality wise?
this is what kind of comparison video that helps!!
Thank you for dis vid 🤙🏽
Question: can you use back button focus and exposure lock at the same time on the a6400 (separate button assigned to each function)? I had to get rid of my Panasonic GX 85 because I wasn't able to do this. Anyone know...? Thanks.
You sure could, just assign them to separate buttons and you’re good to go!
Dunna you are lovely man, answering all these questions and being sooo informative myLord.!
hello there Mr Dunna Did it , just wanna ask, i'm a content creator on instagram, i'm so dilema choosing a6400 or a6500 for making a content , like take a ootd photos , and reels video, using a tripod, which do your prefer sir , thankyou somuch if you want to answer me .
I would go a6400 especially if you’re using a tripod.
But also, the quality from these apsc cameras is great, I haven’t had enough of a reason to jump yet... but I’m always pondering it lol.
very helpful. thanks man ✌🏼
I take photos and video and if only the a6400 had IBIS then the decision would be made. I have a Canon 6d right now but just want IBIS, what bodies would you suggest me looking at (any brand) preferably under 1,700$.
Well if an a6400 with ibis would have been perfect. You could hold off until November for the a6600
Can the A6400 be used for live streaming on twitch? Does it have a clean HDMI out option?
Sure does!
Did they update the a6500 since?
With like the color stuff you were talking about
I have sigma lenses without OSS.
That would be a fun video to make, I’ll see what I can do!
Thanks for watching homie!
hey how did you find the switch in the end? I'm thinking of going from a7rii to a6400
Thanks Dunna.
