With a price of 1049 Euro for the body it's really closer to the prosumer range than entry level or even above-entry like the d5600. Main problem are still lenses, though. It's not a good feeling to invest into a system that the producer is not really focusing on or committed to. Sony clearly prioritizes FE. There really is only one player who takes APS-C even serious and that is Fuji.
Id Argue Sigma's great sony APS-C lenses support the a6x00 enough that Sony doesn't have to try as hard, especially when they still have FE lenses to work on. The FF Mirrorless is still what Sony is furthest ahead at, them competing with Fuji more aggressively doesnt make as much sense.

Don't worry the a7000 will come. And it will have everything. Headphone jack, 7,5 stop IBIS, epic subject tracking. I am sure they will also do better with the screen and make it flip down. To avoid blocking the tripod mount, they will place screw hole up top.
One thing I love about the A6xxx series is the handling. There's no other mirrorless camera that you can use with one hand so easily. Especially not the Fuji bricks. Such a great body for street photography.
I think they glossed over the deep upgrades this camera has received over the 6300 and 6500, like the new processor, which is not only tied to the more automatic, reliable autofocus, but also, the speed of the autofocus, when this camera came out, it had the fastest autofocus of all cameras, not just aps c, also the new chip actually brings ~15% more battery life with the same battery, the better colour science, the overheating was completely fixed! Another thing that this review doesn't mention at all, is that the screen doesn't dim at all now, that this camera has the higher quality, magnesium alloy body compared to the 6300, that the menu system is better now, basically being the same as the A7 iii and quite a lot of small, but for some people very major improvement, I'd just like to say that this review was not so DeeP.
There are no picture profiles on the A9, so while having the contrast turned all the way down, it still has very limited DR in video recording. The GH5 has a number of profiles to help you capture an extended DR, so while the sensor is 1/4 the A9's size, the video DR is better. At least until Sony gives the A9 some damned picture profiles.
Chris is the first one, I've heard mentioning there must be a6500 replacement on it's way too. Thank you! That's why this is lacking in some areas. Also I don't really get why everyone is moaning about the flip screen going up. You can buy a bracket to go under the camera, so you can have the mic on the side and I actually prefer the screen on top. I find it less distracting when I'm in front of the camera, and it's not as noticeable for the viewer either, I find.
Agreed, flip up is more comfortable imo. Sony needs to sell that bracket for an underside mic, which would mean that the flip "UP" screen is a purposefully engineered element which I fear it may instead be coincidental. I wouldn't want the next camera to suddenly be Flip down. I worry that Sony is only half-ass'edly trying to meet vlogger demand.
Great honest and fair review... to many people expected a high level professional camera and I truly think they were unfair and not open minded to who this camera is intended for... definitely not a professional photographer. But most professional photographers egos are way bigger than any camera that could ever be produced. Great video like always guy's, thank you
I think that Sony should have considered working on a better sensor readout, if possible. You could pop this on a stabilizer, and maybe even get around the headphone and mic issue that way (depending on how you "rig" it) but that rolling shutter is pretty tough to get around.
You are definitively the best : first ones to mention the huge rolling shutter / wobbling I instantaneously found chocking first footage I saw, talking about the timelapse and making clear no video is created (bummer, the app did it, Sony come on, you nearly got it), emphasizing the bad vlogging setup it represents (why the f*ck don't they just put a fully articulated screen like Panasonic), showing the new menu customization interface (the pictogrammes will be a huge time-saving trick for both new Sony users and older ones), talking about the no recording time limit (which is pretty huge for some people I think) and all Chris' speach about new autofocus is so damn interesting and right ! 😊 Thanks a lot guys, contrary to a lot of other pro RUclipsrs you don't just "scratch the surface" of the equipment you review and that makes all the difference. Keep the good work, you rock ! 😉
See, I think we've been so "wowed" by Sony for so long that a release like this disappoints. We are all holding our breath for that camera that has a true fully articulating screen (off to the side like Panasonic), headphone jack, IBIS, and a better battery. It was probably a good call not to launch this at CES cuz of how lack luster it really is, knowing we want something more!
2 reason why this cam is great = 1) The New AF is *Huuuuge* for VideoCentric users (amateur /small video production) 2) It’s good enough to fight M50 (ML Apsc Best Seller) since M50 has 4K 1.7X Crop and Dual Pixel AF don’t work in 4K A7000 with new body is gonna out soon, but i predict the price will be around 1300-1500 usd This A6400 is very interesting, great value
Rolling shutter and lack of Ibis are the only two limitations of this camera. And that means you'd have to improve your shooting techniques with or without a gimbal. I'm a Canon user and unless they come up with a better FF soon or Sony releases another upgraded model this year, I'm seriously considering getting this camera for video.
You were saying now we do not need to pick a AF mode for various scenarios. So, the ultimate AF mode for the A6400 is which mode? AF-C? That it will do all the AI to help focusing?
Is it possible to display the level gauge AND the histogram at the same time. Is it possible to manually set the white balance using a grey card while in video mode?
I've used the a6300 in almost everything situation since it came out. I run n gun with it a lot and to be honest rolling shutter is hardly ever an issue.
They missed a load of stuff here that's much improved over the a6300 (which I'm on as well). I will be upgrading to at least an a6400. The rolling shutter hasn't bothered me once since the a6300 was released.
Very good, balanced review! For most of the people most of the time this is still an excellent camera. Sony make some excellent lenses for the APS bodies, and prices are quite a bit less than full frame equivalents. Sony get a lot of criticism for their menus, but that's something you adapt to and stop noticing once you get used to it.
I use an a6000 and 55-210mm kit sony lens and I just can't auto focus, it will only sharpen lets say the eye of the bird and none of the feathers. I also as a result manual focus and lose my shot half the time as bird has flown away. How is the a6400 with the 70-350mm focus and the sharpess of getting the whole body of a bird?
Hi Chris and Jordan , would like to ask does A6400 AF system works better than A6500 under low light condition? Im thinking to downgrade my A6500 for A6400 just for the improved AF system , but seem no one on youtube mention how does A6400 AF perform under low light condition such as dim lighting indoor wedding reception dinner. The A6500 was pretty bad for me, so I get you. While I haven't used the A6400, I have an RX10M4, and have used the A9 somewhat extensively, and can say that those two cameras eat the A6500 for breakfast... and the A6400 is supposed to be even *better* 😮
What do you mean not a good "vlogging" camera? Video IQ looks great, amazing AF. It is small and great for travel. Does someone need to take selfies 90% of the time when making a travel video? If someone needs to speak to the camera could alway have someone else film or use a tripod and a lavalier mic. Also could use the phone connected to the cam to check if the head is not cropped before hitting "record". Only thing I wish there was a way to monitor audio via BT or headphone jack, to check on background noise when interviewing someone. The AF improvement is really an amazing step forward, with direct Eye AF tracking. No more need of a thumb joystick and no more fiddling when taking portraits or event photos if switching from horizontal to vertical framing. It really allows a photographer to capture the decisive moment, to compose without worrying about where the AF points are or pressing the eye AF button. I hope selfie videos in vogue will just look dated and narcissistic very soon

Hello guys what would be the ideal choice between the sony a6400 and panasonic fz1000II for making home and landscape videos. Greetings from Portugal. Thanks
Great review but I disagree with the vlog comments... There are options to reposition the microphone so they no longer hide the screen. Also no one that vlogs has headphones on monitoring the levels... Saying that I think it would be good to be able to have that option regardless... Ibis, the ibis on the 6500 has already been proven to only really help in situations when taking stills... Vlogging wise there's still tons of jerkiness... If you want steady footage your best option in my opinion is to go for the 6400 for its tracking abilities and just use a combination of lens Oss along with a gimbal...
Guys, after watching this review I understood what's going on. A6500 has IBIS, not on 6400. Sony did this on purpose. Why?? The main goal is to lure and lead, lure competitors like Fuji, Canon, Nikon to fight them at this price point with similar features which directs their focuses on entry/mid category, if they go this route, they're competing with a top popular, sales proven brand - Sony, which is tough, if they're not competing, A6400 will grab sales in this market category. Sony can easily add IBIS with this latest focusing software, faster buffering on the next model which targets mid to high market segment, holding on now because the moment Fuji, Canon and Nikon make their moves, that model will surface. Sony have the advantage because of their leading mirrorless market establishment, they're are in control at this moment and that's what matters in marketing and sales.
Which exactly app you mentioned for time lapse for Sony 6400? Because I’m planning on buying this camera specifically for time lapses. Is it complex to shoot time lapses with this camera? And what about the quality?
I agree - this is a family/consumer camera and a good one at a reasonable price point too. Whether it is the best or not is for each and every individual to decide and I'm not going to foray into that realm of discussion.
DPReview or other photography enthusiasts, I plan on going to Tokyo next year and I plan on buying this camera in between now and then. However, I'm not sure what lens to take. I plan on traveling light and I need an all around lens to use for almost everything (portraits of friends, landscape and a few videos). What would be the "jack of all trades master of none" lens to use in all these situations? Thank you for ya'lls time.. P.S. I don't know much about photography but I plan on mastering this camera as much as possible.
I actually wish @DPReview would talk more about the high frame rate shooting capabilities of DSLR/Mirrorless cameras that come out. Do the ones who that shoot 120fps shoot it w/audio?
Love your honest thoughts on the camera. Not that I am in the market for one (using Pana G9), it is amazing how much tech is stuffed into these cameras. Vlogging camera? I don't see how.
Sony must've ignored the complaints of reviewers of the EOS M3, M5 and M6 flip screens and looked at the success of their RX100 series for them to go in the direction they did. The problem is nobody really sticks an external mic on top of an RX100 V.
Just spent more than $7K today for my A7r III set up. Going to get the A7r IV on launch day around september. The 6400 is only $800 for a bunch of goods that it offers. You all should wait til black friday and it should be around $500 or so.
Great review as always guys , just one small suggestion , when taking about cameras overheating results , it wold be nice if you could give us a a rough estimate of temperature the device is tested in . We often see reviewers mention how well devices operate in cold Europe for example , but if your filming in the cold of morning or a cooler climate area , and saying the device did not over heat , really it does not help us out much for those of us in warmer climates. Cheers.
Great review! I love your common-sense and positive attitude, Chris. Also, you were pretty steady when Jordan said you were hand-holding the camera to film him. It looks like a nice camera at its price point. I think people expect too much these days, the camera companies will run out of improvements if they implement too many every time a new camera comes out.
You should shoot the review video with the camera you are reviewing. Have 2 cameras of the same kind..one to shoot the review and one to carry it with you

NO, I CANT REST UNTIL MY CAMERA HAS A 10,000 MP SENSOR WITH 12D AUTOFOCUS AND 700K VIDEO ALL IN A RETRO STYLE BODY TO TAKE PHOTOS OF MY DOG AND KEYBOARD
But my facie. It needs selfie and videome featuressss wwwwaahhhhhhhhhhh!!! You don’t get us and you never will!!!!!!
Until I get that gigapixel video, I'm one grumpy camper!
@@fiatlux8828 wow. same.. and of course it should be less than $100!!!
@@fiatlux8828 You actually dont get the full megapixels that your sensor has because of lenses, think of it as a bottlneck if you know about video games and hardware stuff. *Note* I do know you were saying satire but I just had to say it.
will those new AF features you mentioned, as well as the new animal eye tracking, be a something that is released for older camera models or only available in the 6400 and newer models?
I'm from SD....and that's a TOUGH neighborhood. Still, glad to see anything from my hometown.
I’ve been using the 5100 for my vlogs I’m excited for the 6400 but I’m worried the lenes won’t move back and forth between that and the A7 when I eventually do get it
hi. jordan mentions this camera is NOT a good vlogging camera.. what would be you and Jordan's pick for a compact vlogging camera w 4k video?
A7iii
Glad to see Chicano Park getting some love on your channel
Always love your guy's videos. Thank you.
Loved the cameos, especially TCSTV!
I like the lady host.
okay I'm thinking about getting this camera but also getting a battery grip for it does it use the same battery grip as a6300?
And Camera Conspiracies makes his appearance (after his shirt did earlier). I'm sure he'll be thrilled...haha.
Great video, what camera are you using while filming this? Thank you 😊
Which exactly app you mentioned for time lapse for Sony 6400? Because I’m planning on buying this camera specifically for time lapses. Is it complex to shoot time lapses with this camera? And what about the quality?
5:01 what is that place. beach name or town. thanks
I agree - this is a family/consumer camera and a good one at a reasonable price point too. Whether it is the best or not is for each and every individual to decide and I'm not going to foray into that realm of discussion.
Does a6400 record at variable frame rate or constant frame rate?
Will there be any audio sync issue in Adobe Premier Pro?
Chris and Jordan, thanks for the tips and reviews. - RJane Style
missed that the screen doesn't dim in 4k, I think that's one of the best upgrades over the 6300.
Another man named Carey! And he spells it right! Hi Brother!
Has the color science been updated since the A6300/A6500? Is it in line with the A7 III/A7R III now?
Does the 6400 have silent shooting? The option to turn off the shutter sound?
Starting out for short films. This or original A7?? Thanks
As always, awesomely good review Chris -> honest and unbiased = enjoyed it. Thanks much :)
Jordan regarding your rewiew regarding videos what can be a better option for vloggers?
I actually wish @DPReview would talk more about the high frame rate shooting capabilities of DSLR/Mirrorless cameras that come out. Do the ones who that shoot 120fps shoot it w/audio?
which of the lenses is better for close picture like 6 to 12 feet?
Hi, how about rolling shutter at 1080p ?
Cannon 80d or sony a6400 which one i should buy ?
Sir, what can you recommend a mid range nikon dslr for photography and videgraphy? Thank you.
if you have the money, yeah it's a B cam, if not, it's an A cam bro :)
haha my thoughts exactly. Him saying 'it's a good B cam' translates to me as 'its a good A cam'...if its good enough for them, its good enough for me
Would you recommend the Canon 80D or the Sony A6400 if I were focused on wildlife videography including macro shots of insects, fish etc.?
6400
Love your honest thoughts on the camera. Not that I am in the market for one (using Pana G9), it is amazing how much tech is stuffed into these cameras. Vlogging camera? I don't see how.
Does the lens 18-135mm making any autofocus noises while recording videos ?
Can you recommend a better camera around the $1000 (or less) price range? I have a vacation coming up in less than a week, and I want a nice camera.
Sony must've ignored the complaints of reviewers of the EOS M3, M5 and M6 flip screens and looked at the success of their RX100 series for them to go in the direction they did. The problem is nobody really sticks an external mic on top of an RX100 V.
Hi sir,
Which one will be better camera for macro, bird flight photography.
A 6400 or d7500 or any other option in these price range.
Please help me
Which lens do you recommend 16-50 or 18-135?
Just spent more than $7K today for my A7r III set up. Going to get the A7r IV on launch day around september. The 6400 is only $800 for a bunch of goods that it offers. You all should wait til black friday and it should be around $500 or so.
Great review as always guys , just one small suggestion , when taking about cameras overheating results ,
it wold be nice if you could give us a a rough estimate of temperature the device is tested in .
We often see reviewers mention how well devices operate in cold Europe for example , but if your filming in the cold of morning or a cooler climate area , and saying the device did not over heat ,
really it does not help us out much for those of us in warmer climates.
Cheers.
Thank you!
Im trying to get a camera sony a6400 or nikon z5?
Great review! I love your common-sense and positive attitude, Chris. Also, you were pretty steady when Jordan said you were hand-holding the camera to film him.
It looks like a nice camera at its price point. I think people expect too much these days, the camera companies will run out of improvements if they implement too many every time a new camera comes out.
4:42 Who is that guy?
blue Tony and Chelsea Northrop
@@jgaskell80 I think you mean Sony Northcrop.
Athaeus oooo apply ice to burn. Prof. Frink needs to check his sarcasm detector 🤭
I believe thats a wild M43 hater
You should shoot the review video with the camera you are reviewing. Have 2 cameras of the same kind..one to shoot the review and one to carry it with you
A6400 , its becoming very confusing with the number on the Sony camera model . which one is older A6500 or the A6400 & can you tell the difference between A6500 & A6400 other then comparing with A6300..?
Which one is better Canon Eos RP or Sony a6400 ? for travel photography
