I have the m7 version I bought solely for travel in Africa. The zoom is incredible for street photography as well, as I use it often. I'm considering picking up the m5A as well for low-light photos of food when I am indoors. Both cameras have their place I think. Thank you for this wonderful video!!
I agree completely. I just bought the 5A about a week ago, and could have chosen the VI or VII. But, along with the things you pointed out, I realized lately that I hardly ever even touched the zoom on my Lumix LX100, original RX100 or any other camera, and if so, only by small amount! An old Canon SX50HS (50X optical) just gathers dust in my apartment, along with another high-zoom, recent Lumix I barely use. Besides, if I really want lots of extra zoom on the 5A, the semi-digital 'clear image zoom' can probably come close to the quality of the extended optical zoom on the VI and VII, and can be further tweaked in post production, if necessary to look almost as good. And (with lots of megapixels), photos can be cropped substantially as well, in order to bring a subject closer in post production. Big zoom is always tempting at first- but then, how often do we really use it? Plus (here in Canada anyway) $600 more for the V!!?!! Hell, I may as well go buy the Nikon P1000 (for 125X optical zoom), take a few videos and photos of the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and it's moons like everyone else, then let that camera gather dust too.
Thank you for the explanations. I am an amateur with no technical understanding. You have just saved me a bunch of money. My Rx100V just gave up after years of faithful service and beautiful photographs. I’m opting for the VA.
After watching your video, I went ahead and purchased the RX100VII, and I think there are a few points where the RX100VA is not as advantageous as you suggest: 1. f/2.8 vs f/1.8: With a 1-inch sensor, the equivalent depth of field in full-frame terms is approximately f/7.5-f/12.2 for the RX100VII and f/4.9-f/7.6 for the RX100VA. The difference is minimal, and no one justifies paying a premium simply to move from f/7.5 to f/4.9 in equivalent terms. The comparison to f/2.8 vs f/1.8 primes on full-frame doesn’t really apply here. 2. Low-light performance: The RX100VII’s advanced optical stabilization effectively compensates, enabling slower shutter speeds and addressing low-light situations without needing a wider aperture. 3. Zoom reach: The additional reach on the RX100VII is a significant advantage. With a 20MP sensor, you can’t crop much, so having extra optical zoom makes a real difference in versatility. Overall, I find the RX100VII to offer better flexibility and usability, especially for varied shooting scenarios.
I have to tell you that the f/1.8 is not two stops brighter than the f/2.8. It's only 1 and 1/3 stops brighter. Likewise, the f/2.8 at the long end is only 1 and 1/3 stops brighter than the f/4.5
Thanks for the comparison! Confirmed my decision to purchase the VA two years ago. I have a mirrorless camera for telephoto pics, and wanted the 1.8 lens for low light pics while traveling.
Thanks, video still very useful in 2024! totally agree with your conclusions, just picked up a as new RX100v (very close to the VA) at great value. With the combined effects of covid pandemic (less travelling for a while there), the silicone chip shortage (less production) and the advancements of Smartphone image processing, the compact camera market is a bit frozen in time right now. Thus your advice is still current !
Thanks for posting. I'm currently research RX100va. Does the RX100 vii have auto focus vs rx100va - no auto focus? It's my understanding, that's what makes the rx100 vii better. I've seen rx100va going for $625 used. I'm really considering it. Thanks again.
I have the original, had the III (got stolen), but now use both the VA and now the VII. They are so small and portable it’s actually nice to have both.
Thanks for this video. I am deciding on a new compact camera, and your comparison is very helpful. I know the Canon G5X and G7X are different "beasts", and have their own Pros and Cons, but you have given me plenty to think about if I decide to go Sony. I tend to agree that the faster lens of the VA could will push me that way for a good all round travel camera. Thanks.
You will regret going with the shorter lens for traveling, trust me. I had owned 4 different models of the rx100.bthe rx100 vi or vii are there ones to get
Went to England with my Lumix LX100 a few months before I got the Sony RX100 VA, and (like the year before) there were problems with the hard-to-get-at, tiny recording button in the back. Both years, I lost some great footage, as the recording light would blink on and off, so you couldn't tell if it was recording or not, and I didn't always have the opportunity to retake the video! The video, and still image quality was fine, but I've had it with that camera!! Ironically, the much cheaper Lumix ZS60 I brought (less than half the price!) was far more dependable! Anyway, when the LX100 'did' record video, it had a wonderful little helper, whilst traversing around London- a Zhiyun Crane M2! So, now that I have the even smaller, and lighter, Sony RX100VA, I can't wait to return to England with that propped up onto my little Zhiyun Crane M2! But (like the rest of the world) I have to wait for the damned pandemic to settle down!

Hi, Thank you for a fantastic video I am now seriously considering the RX100 VA but in a quandary now the ZF1 is out (which I know if for vlogging but HAS the mic input and also the fast lens) I know it doesn't have a viewfinder just the screen on the back but keen to hear your views?
Great review. I only wish the menustructure of the Sony's was much easier to use. Which gimbal/steadycam do you advice when using the RX100 VA? Do you also advice the RX100 VA for outdoor/sports videoshooting? I am surching for a camera to use while running and skiiing. At this moment I use the TG-5 of Olympus. Great camera, but the sensor is very small.
Though one year down the line, (saw this video just now), here's a tip if it still helps. Get a gimbal called Hohem iSteady Multi (quite cheap). This gimbal supports the Sony Rx 100 series of cameras (except the original Rx 100) with a cable that can take a snap or start/stop recording directly from a button on the gimbal. I have personally used it on RX100 iii.
ALinsdau You can actually can thanks to this. Check it out: mogopod.com/products/magfilter-threaded-adapter-ring?ref=Cheesycam.com Thats why I was asking if it would suit better a 52 or a 58 for an extra ND filter.
Very cool. I’d use the smaller one if it fits. The RX’s lens isn’t that wide but check for vignetting just to make sure. Sorry I don’t have more help than that.
I finally bougth the 58mm one. Man, it’s absolutely fantastic and works better than expected. No vignetting, good grip when it is attached and no problems at all with the lens. I surely recommend you to take a look of this product for a future review.
@@ALinsdau Now that you say that, with Sony's recent advances in lens tech, maybe they could make it an F1.4 - F2.0 16mm - 55mm lens... Every other lens maker that competes with Sony on specs ends up with larger, heavier glass... and the Zeiss design on the original RX100 is pretty old...
Check the video data rate on the iPhone pro. My iPhone XS only does 16Mb/s with the camera app as a default. Go into settings to change it but it’s a slow process. You need the ProMovie app to easily change the data rate. The phone is convenient but my Sony is more capable, plus the optical zoom blows away digital zoom on the iPhone.
Does the va have face tracking in af-c? This is killing me. I have children that I photograph all the time which points me to the vii with its face/eye tracking but man I dont want to lose out on an nd filter and. a faster lens!
I think they are just releasing and releasing models which lack on some aspects intentionally so you're looking into the next gen with more interest. If they give you the camera which is in the middle between these 2 models they would reach the maximum they can get from a compact camera immediately.
I think it all depends on what you do and what you need. I wouldn’t have paid 1,200 when it came out, but I just got the two cameras for under a 1,000: a Canon G7X III (new) and a used Sony RX100 VI for telephoto in good light, and they cover all my needs when traveling.

What has better image Qaulity in stills between the RX100 MK1 and the RX100 MK5A, also I would prefer the 5A over the 7 any day, best wishes from Scotland.
The stills are very comparable. Arguably the Mk VA would have an edge because the zoom range is shorter. If you shoot in RAW, you can get even more out of the images.
Check your layers. I have a complete course on fiction book layout that might help: www.udemy.com/course/adobe-indesign-for-fiction-book-layout/?referralCode=F6143EC886AA19A04476
Thanks! Very informative video! Now Sony has released the zv1 which satisfied your need. But I still being hesitate to choose between va vii and zv1. I just need it for traveling photos, not much for vlogging. Which one do you suggest me to get?
I often have been finding I get better film and stabilization from my Samsung S10 phone than my RX100 VII depending on the situation. The very narrow field of view for selfie length shots is a challange. Shooting film while driving down bumpy New Orleans streets with lots of potholes really needs a gimbal but between the S10 phone and the VII I think the phone does better with stabilization. I also seem to get more artifacts and large square pixilations in the VII footage I don't see from the phone shot in the same environment. I can get much better night shots and pictures of the moon from the VII with the greater control over the ISO, larger sensor and zoom.
Are you using the smart stabilizer mode on the RX100? It has 4 different modes (as you may know?). The higher level of stabilizing does cut down the field of view - that does make shooting selfies a lot tougher.
@@ALinsdau I have used all the levels of stabilization and the S20 phone stabilization works better in most situations along with giving a wider field of view. The VII just going into video crops the field of view from the photo mode. The VII takes great photos but the video leaves a lot to be desired. I found a good written review I posted a link to below that covers a lot of the challenges with the VII that I wish I would have read before I got the VII. I also got the grip kit and half the time the buttons don't work on the grip as the wired connection to the camera comes loose too easy. The VII maybe could be improved with a software update or maybe when they put out the next model VIII with fixes but for the price of this camera it failed to deliver in many ways. www.theverge.com/2019/12/5/20995864/sony-rx100-mark-vii-camera-review-price-specs-features-microphone-jack
Yeah, i like the 200 zoom of the new Sony RX100 vii. And i am glad they finally added an ext mic jack...BUT i wish it had an f1.8 lens. I also wish it had an internal ND filter like the new Canon G7Xiii. I hope Sony releases an update to the VA with an f1.8 lens. I would probably go for that over the RX100 Vii
They're both great in the daylight. In darker locations, or at night, I'd still choose the VA. If there was a new version with the f/1.8-2.8 lens and a mic input, I'd buy it today.
I gave you a thumbs up but I'm not going to subscribe. However, I AM 100% in agreement with your reasoning behind preferring the IIIa over the VII. The ability to shoot in low light at lower ISO settings AND (you neglected to mention) the ability to get shallow depth of field, i.e. creamier bokeh, softer back and foregrounds totally trumps all the other advantages of the VII. You are one of the CHOSEN beings with SUPERIOR perception and taste. The supreme being has spoken.
VI and VII was made for Cellphones photographer who don't care, or they just don't have idea of F stop and they worry is just to zoooooooom. I just got a V at ebay at an incredible price, beside I only do photos, so I really don't care about mic.
so the rx100va has a 124-70 1.8-2.8 lens and the rx100vii has a 24-200 2.8-4.5 lens .How is that 2 stops of a difference ?! It's 1,3 stops , not two. A full stop is from 1.4-2.0-2.8-4.0-5.6-8.0 etc . If the rx100Va would have a touch screen, mic in and a bigger battery i would have bought it when it was released. Also if the VII would have had maybe a 24-200 2.0-4.0 lens, a nd filter and a bigger battery i would have also bought it instantly. Sony just doesn't want to give it all and make a perfect camera. PS: also making reviews in 480p ? Really ? It's 2019 , not 2009 , at least use 1080p.
Technically correct - the wide angle difference isn't quite 2 stops. Going from 1.8 to 2.8 is substantial, though. The bigger battery would be huge - I went through 3 batteries filming my winter camp last week. However, the camera would have to be bigger. Having an ND on a 2.8-4.5 lens doesn't make a lot of sense except in bright daylight. I really don't like eating hard drives alive for review videos at 1080p since 87% are mobile views. I've started uploading in 720p so it look a bit better - it's a balancing act.

Спасибо! Тоже решил взять 5 версию.
Thanks for watching!
What has better image Qaulity in stills between the RX100 MK1 and the RX100 MK5A, also I would prefer the 5A over the 7 any day, best wishes from Scotland.
The stills are very comparable. Arguably the Mk VA would have an edge because the zoom range is shorter.
If you shoot in RAW, you can get even more out of the images.
for travels i used sony rx1 and sony rx10 iii till now ... time to upgrade both!
If my original RX100 Mark I didn't die from dust and a botched repair attempt, I'd still be using as a backup camera.
ty .
You're welcome!
1.8 to 2.8 is 1 1/3 stops difference NOT 2 stops. Well worth the change for the way longer reach. Sony is trying to keep distance from phones.
Technically true on the stop difference.
Were you able to use an external mic with the RX100 VA?
Check your layers. I have a complete course on fiction book layout that might help:

I'm so happy with my va I use it solely for underwater photography and it's brilliant
Nice! It's a great tool.
Thanks! Very informative video! Now Sony has released the zv1 which satisfied your need. But I still being hesitate to choose between va vii and zv1. I just need it for traveling photos, not much for vlogging. Which one do you suggest me to get?
I'd still choose the ZV1 because of the faster f/1.8-2.8 lens instead of the very slow RX100 VII f/2.8-4.5 lens.

@@ALinsdau I really want a camera with a viewfinder. Would you recommend va over zv1? Or should I look elsewhere?
Just got a used 5A in 200 bucks. super excited.
Thanks for watching.
Thank You Aron!
Welcome!
I LOVE my RX100 V!
It's a great camera.

Subbed! Like your style. How is the mic audio quality on the VA?
This was recorded on my RX100 VA in the wilderness:

Sony RX100 VA have the best Lens !
Too true
In the case of photo ONLY:
Is the VA really better than the II?
I think it is because the lens on the VA is faster so you can use a lower ISO.
@@ALinsdau both are 1.8...

Start here.
Thanks for watching.
I certainly would.
VII or VA for better stills?
Thanks zantigar. You're right - the shallower DOF is a huge bonus, too.
VI and VII was made for Cellphones photographer who don't care, or they just don't have idea of F stop and they worry is just to zoooooooom. I just got a V at ebay at an incredible price, beside I only do photos, so I really don't care about mic.
Faster is definitely better. I was filming in the forest last night. The f/1.8 made it happen. A slower lens would've made the footage too grainy.
it would have been great if you post sample pictures of low light photos for comparison. good informative review otherwise.
Ok next time
Very illuminating. Many thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Lol very misguided more like it
Thanks so much to Ray Romano for the comparison! ;)
Thanks for watching.
It's a bit hard to take you seriously when you keep saying there are 2 stops from f/1.8 to f/2.8...
Technically it's 1.3 stops.
I know.
@@motozest7856 which is a BIG difference
The VA isn't modern enough - too many VII features missing - and that model is getting replaced shortly.
Hard to beat that f/1.8 lens, though.
@@ALinsdau lol if that is all you care about then get a camera with a bigger sensor. The vii wipes the floors with the va.
There is 1 1/3 ev difference between them not 2 ev
You're correct! I wish I could edit videos on RUclips after I post them to fix mistakes. :)
you're wholesome
Thanks!
Vee-aye-aye :)
Thanks for watching.
so the rx100va has a 124-70 1.8-2.8 lens and the rx100vii has a 24-200 2.8-4.5 lens .How is that 2 stops of a difference ?!
Stopped watching after f-stops difference miscalculation.
Thanks for pointing the error out, it should be 1.3 stops.
c'mon GET ON WITH IT!!! too much yarning on.........
hello I ask you who are a super expert I have the rx100 iv I would like to switch to the mark v or the va because of the autofocus and the best buffer and the.chip lsi but in terms of image quality they are superior to my mark iv?
The cameras are very comparable.
