Real world review - always great production value. I especially like the smooth pannings and the fresh music choices. Thanks Jared, Stephen and to everybody else who worked hard on this...
Woah, I don't know is it because of the editing or something I can't tell but the content quality seems to be bumped a lot so I see what u were talking about in your latest podcast.
Regarding the “dainty” nature. I use a Sony leather case which offers good protection, looks great and makes it super easy to carry. I’d never go out without it. I have an RX100 v and a RX10 iv. I’ve found them a great combination to travel with although the sensor does have some limitations in low light.
Your real world review of the M4 pushed me into the world of Sony photography. When I first heard about the M6 I was excited and waited for your review...and I think I'll hold on to my M4 for a bit longer...or at least until that $1200 price comes down a bit. Great review though!
Just a small thing re: fragile, not sure about the VI but I've had the original version for 6 years and it's been with me every day in my bag. And the bag's been on a heap of motorbike rides, overseas travel, survived being thrown in the ute (pick up) every day going to construction jobs being used to snap jobs in progress and final results and it's still going great. Only thing failing is the coating on the rear screen making it increasingly harder to see what I'm shooting in strong light. Got the leather case for it at time of purchase which has worked well.
Fro - just watched your RX100 VI review. Nice job. Enjoyed - as I have it's big brother and am considering... IMHO you provide a fair assessment. Thanks, dale
My mom bought the VI and I‘m just impressed, how far they have come with the RX100 series. The image quality ist impressive for such a small camera and I would go for this one before purchasing a mFT or something like it for traveling etc. She bought an IV some years before and the combination is like having a lot of stuff in you bag. I think a lot of people underestimate those cameras. What it is really missig in this version, is the F1.8 at the widest. Thats the one of the two things I have to complain with the VI/VII. In this point, Sony should think about something like the lens in the GX5 II. The IV-VA are litte beasts even on events or weddings. I shot with my old RX100 I in parallel to my A7RIII and I love the results of the I. It’s more grain, buts it’s more private, so I get images I don’t get with the Alpha. Fros style of edeting his images is hard for these files. If you’re some one who goes more for an overall softer film look, these cameras are perfect. The G5X II also comes with the old style EVF from the RX100 IV-VA and you might not like the way how you have to pull it out, but your eye leashes dont touch the surface of the EVF the hole time, with this construction. So I’m between the VI/VII/ and GX5 II now.
Thank you for video, I was curious how you will like RX100 VI vs. V. I own secondhand RX 100 VA for maybe 3 years and I love it :) because of size, fast aperture and dynamic range of sensor. I take it almost everywhere, it almost replaced my trusted Pentax K-5 II. And, ofc, I shoot RAW :)
I have a MK V that I use all the time for Street and absolutely love it, but I also use the ND and shoot at 1.8 regularly so I unfortunately will not be upgrading... That said, never drop one of these... I did and I had to get pliers to bend the battery compartment back out so the door would close, then file down the rough aluminum to smooth so it didn't scratch me and my clothes every time I used it. It survived for sure, and still works a year after the drop just fine with zero issues... It's just not pristine anymore... It fell out of a jacket pocket as I was walking, and took a good bounce on the concrete so I'm actually surprised that the superficial marks were all that were done lol
Jared, this review is a great photography school. We can see the whole process of framing and taking great pictures - amazing! I wish I could shoot such photos with my DSLR...
Good review. Another option is to get the RX100V (not the VI) which has an equivalent FOV of 24-70, a classic zoom. It gives you f/1.8 at the bottom and f/2.8 at the longest length. It also gives you a built-in ND filter, which is advantageous for shooting wide-open in bright light, and for video. Thanks!
Love the hair! Thanks,Finally a camera review that shows you what the hell you’re talking about as you’re doing it, and shows you real results by an obvious professional ! Sorry....Man it just took me 20 videos to find one that showed me what the Camera could do. It’s a real pain in the ass! keep up the good work!! Thanks 🙏
Would it matter if I just use it in automatic mode for every shoot? Because I don’t really know about the ISO or aperture etc. would it be a huge different between automatic mode and manual mode?
Jared in several of your videos you said that, (I’m paraphrasing) “all filters are worthless, maybe if your in a paintball tournament or something, that putting glass on top of glass is just stupid and too throw filters out of you have one on etc etc.... I’m curious as too why you endorsed ND filters (which I love) on this video? Thanks for your time Jared I appreciate it.
Oh he doesnt like them for photography, but you kinda need them for video if you wanna get a blurry background effect and a proper shutter speed so the video isnt too smooth or too blurry, y'know, the double your fps rule for shutter speed which will usually tend to be for 30fps 1/60th of a second making your exposure quite bright along you high aperture, therefore, in video its needed the nd filter.
I just purchased one for an upcoming trip to London. I wanted the best point & shoot I could get for LTL (Less Than Leica) and this seemed to be the best choice. I love my Nikon D750, D500 and collection of glass, but I don’t love the weight and bulk. The thought of walking around London day in and day out with even a pared down kit makes my feet hurt before I even cross the pond. I’ll let everyone know how the trip goes with the new toy. If it truly stinks, I’ll probably take it back or sell it because honestly, there isn’t much point in owning anything in between an iPhone and DSLR except for travel involving flights.
Joseluis0015 , I did indeed. Since I haven’t had a point & shoot since a Canon Powershot G9 (which after just looking up came out 12 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun! 😄) it’s tough to compare it to other cameras. It’s crazy expensive, but it does some pretty incredible things. My only regret is that I wish I had purchased it at least a couple weeks before my trip and learned how to use more of its advanced features than trying to learn as I go. That being said, I can tell you two small things that annoyed me. First, for a “point & shoot” it seems to take longer than it ought to, to retract the lens after you’ve hit the power button. Second, battery life is surprisingly dismal, which is why I bought three extras. I’d typically burn through three batteries in a day of casual shooting and occasional short video clips. If you have the money and the time to learn the features, I don’t think you can find a better camera this size with this quality. I chose this version with the 200mm equivalent lens over its brother with the faster glass and shorter reach because as a tourist, I figured I wasn’t likely to be dealing with a lot of low light situations, but there are plenty of things I wanted to zoom in on, where using your feet to zoom just isn’t an option. I think this might be the only high quality pocket camera with this long of a zoom. Otherwise you need to move into the “bridge” camera category, which certainly aren’t pocketable.
@@SyrPipeOrg I'm just now seeing this... Thank you for your mini review! If I do end up getting it, I'll make sure to have time to use it before my trip.
Yes. I enjoy ‘real’ world reviews. I particularly like ones like yours that are ‘balanced’ neither doing a sales pitch nor completely rubbishing a camera like this. As you say there will always be some trade(s) off. Not matter which camera you buy or choose. ‘Horses for courses’ as they say here in the UK. Thanks.
I have both Panasonic LX100 Mark 1 and Sony RX100VI. Panasonic has the advantage of good external controls, quick to adjust what u need for the scene, and the fast aperture for fair subject isolation. RX100 VI has the strenght of a very good optical reach and you can take more photos and subjects when you are strolling around outside. Probably keep RX100 VI and a compact like Panasonic LX100 and RX100 V for better subject isolation shots. Anyway it's better than carrying a full sized dslr with several lenses when you travel often
to add , sony's clear zoom extends the zoom range more. It's slightly inferior to optical zoom but better than the digital zoom, which u can still add to the focal range
Thanks for the review Jared, it has helped me make up my mind whether or not to buy it, and the verdict is not buy it. It's simply not worth the upgrade from the RX100V. I bought the V because of the 1.8-2.8 F-Stop, as I like to take it to live music events, in fact, that is the only reason I dropped $1,000 on the point and shoot v5, I would much rather use my Canon 5D4, but the venues say no. :-(
I’ve had the Mk V for about 12 months now and I love it. I’ve shot lots of street pictures most of which I’ve been happy with, I use it as a visual note book for reference shots for drawings and paintings and down load the pictures onto my iPad for alteration if I need to. I’m now thinking of trading up to the Mk6 because of the extra reach which would be very useful but I can probably find a mint one 2nd hand one for a decent price if I hunt around. Two things though, buy a hand grip, there are a few options available, mines aluminium and is basically a bracket that screws in to the base and provides a side grip. With regards to the lanyard, a simple bead will do the job or do as I did and tie a knot in the right place!
RX10 II with the 24-200 2.8 and ND filter, mic & headphone jacks is the ultimate "jack of all trades master of none- IF it's in focus" camera. The features of the RX10 IV & RX100 V/VI are fantastic and fix all my complaints, but I wish sony didnt take away the constant 2.8 and ND's.
I call this camera my "therapy camera" because I can leave my bigger camera at home (well, in the car - I'm trying!) and still get great shots. I returned the Mark V a day or two after I bought it because the VI was soon to come out and I wanted the 200mm zoom. I really agonized over losing the additional f stops but it does what good modern Sony cameras do with higher ISO and if bokeh is a problem for a shot I just love, well that's easy enough in post. I've seen and heard complaints about the cost, but what do you expect the best point and shoot on the market to cost and it is still a Sony after all, so that comes with the territory. Therefore, I think its a great camera for exactly what its made for - a "therapy camera" for serious photographers that are paranoid they are going to miss something if they leave their camera at home. I can live with myself if this is in my pocket. Im sure my A7RIII enjoys the rest... and holy crap I picked up my Canon 6D the other day and it about broke my arm off it was so heavy!
It’s an awesome small camera! I took mine around the world including New York! A very reliable camera and so easy to carry around!! I would like a bit more bokeh, but it does have a reasonable amount.
Thanks for the review - very enjoyable and informative. I've got an earlier version of this camera, the RX100-M2, and use it in a housing while scuba diving. The raw ability is essential to getting the lighting right under water. I've used it for a lot of shots in the past few years and really like it except for the lack of a real macro mode. I'm keeping an eye on the new models for a replacement so this is very helpful. Cheers.
It is pricey right now BUT once the VII comes out its price will go down. How many people did buy it original price? And how many waited for the price to go down? A week ago I got my hands on a well loved but still very well functioning mark III. I see its flaws, but it is small and with you so it gets the picture.
Sony barely addressed the common request for full touchscreen interface, but at least this one has touch focus. I guess Sony's camera UI / operating system for their high-end models is not really designed/programmed to support touch control. But we're near the close of 2018 and a no-touchscreen UI seems antiquated. My old Sony NEX 5N has full touchscreen control, so Sony seems very firm that touchscreen is unnecessary, much in the same way that Apple insists that touchscreen on a Macbook would be ridiculous.
Jared, kno any way to connect an external mic to this camera without needing to sync audio in post? thinking a usb c or hdmi adapter to 3.5 mm audio jack? not liking the idea of a zoom recorder ✌
I have to agree with how fragile the camera is. On the 5th day of a 44 day European trip, I didn't drop the camera but may have bumped the lens while extended on the sill of a train window when my cell phone started ringing. Whatever happened, it wasn't much of a a blow. Right after that I got a message to turn the camera off and back on again.. That did not work. I had to send the camera in and it cost $430 for a complete lens replacement. Now I'm super paranoid on handling the camera which I never use without the strap around my wrist. I am thrilled with the quality of the pictures and it has taken my travel photography to a whole new level as an amateur. I just hope I don't just bump it again!
Great Review!!! Thank You. In other hand, if you had to buy a point n shoot camera, which one would you choose? taking into account the image quality and focus. Tnx
Great review. I just got this camera used. One thing you should have shown is the comparison of the raw after editing vs the in camera KPG after editing. In my first few shoots with this camera I shot RAW+JPG and edited my RAW files, converted them to JPG, and compared them to the native in camera JPG. I was blown away on how much less noise and the quality of the in-camera conversion. I may not be shooting RAW with this camera anymore saving a lot of time.
Good review. One thing that all reviewers of the RX100M5 miss is that when you shoot jpg, the zoom range is 70-280. As you mentioned in your review, the jpg's looked good.
Please turn the music down. Going from dialog to music is a scramble for the volume control...every single time. Love your content. Thanks for posting.
As a potential Sony RX 100 buyer this is the best video I have seen yet, Great presentation, I am deliberating between a V or VI My biggest plus's for the V are the lower f stop, and The Smallrig case hopefully preventing damage when I drop it (I will drop it) and adding Additional sound recording, (via smallrig) please feel free to comment, I'm an older person so I will not burst into tears, I had a Mamiya MSX 1000 back in 1976 (I was 17) used Kodak Tri X 400 and developed my own film, Did a few shows, Then Life took over..And your old before you know it, Like to get some shots it, Maybe a U tube video, What do you think ?
Metro-Case makes a very nice screw on grip for the rx100 series cameras, however I don't know if they are making one for the M6 yet since I believe it is a slightly thicker camera.
Would have liked a low light example to see what the difference is between the 1.8 (V) to 2.8 (VI). And if the better ISO on the VI makes up for the difference. Also, the ND is a non issue. If you are using it for travel you want as much in focus as possible. I wouldn't buy it for bokeh type shots.
Jared, fantastic video with great tips for street photography and great details about this little Sony. It seems as though it would be great for travel photos.
Hey Jared, i haven't finish it yet your review actually im in 2:00 but you tackle one of the best detailed review on this camera.. Zooming and F Stop! Keep it up. 👊
It'll be perfect for when I go skiing, hiking, climbing and adventuring. Hate having to switch lens and hold up friends but don't want to miss the moments either. But as you say there's no way it'll replace my A7III and suite of G lenses.
The built-in microphone sounds like it's doing a decent job, can't say the say thing about other aspects though. In the vlogging test you can easily see how incapable the image stabiliser is, and the image quality doesn't look like the sensor technology has made any visible progress since we first saw how the 1 inch type sensor performed on the RX100 original. It's pocketable, but so is any other point & shoot, the only thing different is the price.
I was looking for a replacement for my Panasonic ZS50, and decided on this Sony. Would've liked to get the ZS200, and save a bunch of money, but from what I hear, that lens is crap. The main reason I'm upgrading is for a better lens. ZS50 isn't so hot. Thanks for the review, J.
Great job on the review... how did you manage to open the raw images you shot? Lightroom CC and Photoshop plus DNG converter will not open or convert the files......
Always love your reviews and the tone of your voice. I really wish Sony built in some grip and made the camera less boxy, but well... Thanks for this review.
Great video! One thing that I sorely miss is some comparison in less ideal light settings, like indoors or night. Basically, I would like to know how much worse it really is for indoors compared to previous models, to decide if upgrade is worth it.
Bought the RX100 Mk2 when it came out primarily after looking for good compact for low-light concert photography - challenging at the best of times and more so with a compact camera but i'm pretty sure i made the right choice .........now it's time to upgrade methinks but the question is, aside from the built in viewfinder, the better 1.8/2.8 lens and the 180 degree tilt LCD screen is there a difference between the sensors on the III, IV and V models??
I currently have the a7Riii with 24 mm f1.4 on most of the time, for quality shoot, and I use the RX100 III for secondary when I go on travel. For my perfect combo, I would rather get the RX100 VI for the reach, so I don't need to carry the 70-200 lens when I need the long shot. For "really good" quality picture, the a7Riii with 24 mm f1.4 lens is more than enough.
Hey Mr. Froknowsphoto. Just noticed you're left eye biased. Isn't it a pain trying to use EVF's that work so much better with right eyes. On my Sony NEX's, I leave great nose prints on the view screen when I EVF. Grrrr. I wear glasses. I bet the RX100 EVF is useless in bright light as eye is so much further from the EVF. Bring on the huge sunhat/shade. (love your videos.)

Keep in mind, I m making a hit with my street video in Pattaya and I m using a mark 3. Think about what I could do if I was using the mark 6?
I have the Mark V because of the larger aperture. I like these videos where you get out there into the real world and shoot.
It’s an awesome small camera! I took mine around the world including New York! A very reliable camera and so easy to carry around!! I would like a bit more bokeh, but it does have a reasonable amount.
Best review of the camera I've seen to date. Invest the 27:38, you won't be disappointed.
Probably the only camera review for this camera than includes taking photos. Great review focussed on photography rather than videography!
Really love your video! You explain everything so clearly. gonna buy this camera tomorrow:D
Which one did you get?
Another great real world review to be sure...I still can't see myself paying that much for such a TINY camera though.
looks like Peter Mckinnon had a say in this video's direction because it looks really good.
that taxi b-roll sequence gives it all up
Came to the comments for this, plus the music. Mr McKinnon definitely changed the RUclips game
actually I dislike the Mckinnon style b-roll. Totally overdone and quite tacky imo.
Thumbs up for this great new and fresh editing style 👍🏼
I love your reviews Jared, you rock! I wonder which camera you’ve been using to film this footage? The quality is superb. Thank you.
You guys delved into the "RUclips cinematic vlogger boi" side of yourselves for the b-roll. Hate to say it, but I'm not mad about that.
35 mm equiv's including apertures:
24-200 f/7.6 - f/12.3
Sony RX 100 VI
24-70 f/4.9 - f/7.6
Sony RX100 V
Very nice review. How did you process the RAW files? I don’t think LR supports the camera yet.
Good review. One thing that all reviewers of the RX100M5 miss is that when you shoot jpg, the zoom range is 70-280. As you mentioned in your review, the jpg's looked good.
Hey Jared really enjoyed both 5 and 6 reviews, good job!. I am curious to know which of the 2 would you go with from a pros point of view? Thanks
Please turn the music down. Going from dialog to music is a scramble for the volume control...every single time. Love your content. Thanks for posting.
real world review are the bee's knees! thanks jarid! -long time viewer
Good review, why no camera neck strap? There is a protective body that SONY makes.
If you have trouble seeing through the EVF in bright sunlight, wear a baseball cap to shade the camera and your eyes.
Top tip re lanyards: tie a knot in it to make it smaller so it only just slips over the wrist. It won’t fall off if you drop it 🙂
Man, first time here and I'm in love already! Thx for the detailed honest review, gonna buy this one.
HONEST REVIEW... keep it that way..
Metro-Case makes a very nice screw on grip for the rx100 series cameras, however I don't know if they are making one for the M6 yet since I believe it is a slightly thicker camera.
Such a good review. Did you notice differences in the aperture when you shot? I would love a low light review.
Would have liked a low light example to see what the difference is between the 1.8 (V) to 2.8 (VI). And if the better ISO on the VI makes up for the difference. Also, the ND is a non issue. If you are using it for travel you want as much in focus as possible. I wouldn't buy it for bokeh type shots.
sizzlemann iphonedo review has a side by side shot at the beginning of his video. Massive difference
"better iso" - LOL
Fair enough and nice review. Probably the most important step back of this model that you referred is the lost of the ND filter.
Hi Jared, color photo shown in video look very colorful, what software or program did you use on raw or are they out of camera jpeg
Great review. Anxious to see a review by you of the RX-10 IV. Seems tto check off masny more boxes as an all in one camera
me too, would love a comparison between the two
Thanks for the review. Debating whether to get this or the mark V for taking photos at venues where larger/ILC cameras are not allowed.
Jared, fantastic video with great tips for street photography and great details about this little Sony. It seems as though it would be great for travel photos.
Thanks for a perfect camera review Jared, it looks small but it’s worth it.
I was trying to convince myself not to buy this camera. Now im going to buy it. Quick question: does it over heat quickly like the sonya5100?
Hey Jared, i haven't finish it yet your review actually im in 2:00 but you tackle one of the best detailed review on this camera.. Zooming and F Stop!
Keep it up. 👊
This review is awesome, love the detailed critique. Very very helpful. And well produced.
It'll be perfect for when I go skiing, hiking, climbing and adventuring. Hate having to switch lens and hold up friends but don't want to miss the moments either. But as you say there's no way it'll replace my A7III and suite of G lenses.
Excellent comparison as usual.
Hello,
what about the zoom? Was it enough for your purposes?
At 9:45 I finally put it together at long last. Jared was that kid that said “I like turtles”. 🤯
I have a feeling the RX100 VII gonna cost 2000 dollars!
Well, with inflation, it might.
maybe they will add add a more consistent faster lens. Also, the killer, add a mic input and shoemount!!!
@@michaelbruceallen3700 eh, unluckily it was only one of those ;^;
Jared I haven't seen your videos in a while. After seeing this one. You are still the man.
Hi, how’s the low light performance?
Great job on the review... how did you manage to open the raw images you shot? Lightroom CC and Photoshop plus DNG converter will not open or convert the files......
Always love your reviews and the tone of your voice. I really wish Sony built in some grip and made the camera less boxy, but well... Thanks for this review.
Great video!
One thing that I sorely miss is some comparison in less ideal light settings, like indoors or night. Basically, I would like to know how much worse it really is for indoors compared to previous models, to decide if upgrade is worth it.
Damn those B-rolls look cinematic af!
Gotta say I really like how you shot B-Roll for this real world review
Bought the RX100 Mk2 when it came out primarily after looking for good compact for low-light concert photography - challenging at the best of times and more so with a compact camera but i'm pretty sure i made the right choice .........now it's time to upgrade methinks but the question is, aside from the built in viewfinder, the better 1.8/2.8 lens and the 180 degree tilt LCD screen is there a difference between the sensors on the III, IV and V models??
25:38 these random references are brilliant
good video.. b-roll shots quality have increased drastically.. nice..
Didn't understand half of what you said but this was so helpful! :) Can't decide if I should get it for my new vlogging cam.
Fly With Stella no external mic jack on this camera.
Well thanks for mentioning what your current is!
can it zoom while vlogging ?
Well the photographs you took with it made me want one. Skills, you have skills!
Thanks for the review, I have a Mark III and want to get the Mark V
Love that audio library music
No copy right music
Yea, I swear in 15 years we're going to all have a very specific recollection of "youtube vlogger music", they all use the same stuff.
