You're way too kind about the video on this, not because it looks bad, but the 5 minute 4K recording limit and the overheating really kinda make this not very good for even basic video shooting.
newfoundmass The overheating and 5min limit is really only an issue if you’re shooting interviews or a performance. For thr vast majority of potential buyers of this camera - where it will be used as a social camera or a vacation camera, the overheating and recording limits are a non-issue. I have mine in South East Asia right now, and have had no problems shooting 4K clips all day long in hot and humid 36C weather.
Here's how I use the RX-100-- the V and soon the VI-- It's phenomenal on a gimbal. Easy set up with its light weight. I use it as a B-camera in interviews. A lock-off wide shot in conjunction with broadcast cameras. The image holds up-- matches nicely to the bi. And the A-camera has the good audio. Great for a quick photo. Much easier than lugging a full sized DSLR, though sometimes I do. If I were to design this camera, I would have kept the 24-70mm and ND filter. I would have the external mic jack. I would move the battery door-- mounted to a gimbal or tripod, you have to take the entire rig apart to get to the battery door. Why buy the VI? Autofocus upgrade and touch screen. For my B-camera situation, touch to focus is much more desirable and I won't miss the ND in that situation. I will appreciate a little more throw on the zoom. I'm usually closed down beyond f/4 because I want 2 subjects in focus, so the added depth won't bother me. But I will keep the V because it's a better gimbal option. I don't need the longer lens on a gimbal, but I do need the ND because I use the gimbal in all different lighting situations, and I'm usually on phase autofocus for gimbal work. It does a nice job. I will also appreciate the shorter focal length on the gimbal for a more cinematic look. For straight Vlogging (I don't...) add a Shure shotgun mic with a memory card. Sounds decent and solves the external mic problem.
This is the first RX100 that I would even consider buying, as the focal range is just too limited on the previous models. However I don't like the lack of a hotshoe, I don't like the lack of a mic input and I don't like the price.
The overheating at 24 Celsius is a bit of a drawback considering that is not very hot for a good portion of the planet, but with such a small body heat dissipation is next to impossible.
I guess most people who are more into photography than videography could still be fine with a Mark III, despite its shorter zoom range and slower AF. And for video, the Mark IV and V are still fine compared to the VI - especially because they've got a built in ND filter and a wider aperture.
at the same time though... what's the point in having video in such a small camera? I wish they got rid of the video altogether (or very basic video). If I'm doing video on a regular basis, there's SO many cameras around the 1000 dollar range that are way better than this tiny camera. The only people that will use this for video is family or friends just catching some "moments". And that doesn't need to be crazy quality. Or shit, Iphones are better at it at this point. (yes this video is 5 years old now... but even back then, phones were good/fine for capturing "moments" on video). I'd prefer more still photography focus than video on such a tiny camera that will never be a great video camera.
I have the RX100V as a secondary camera and i think the VI is not a good release for these reasons: - Prices should not exceed 1000$. - 22-120mm with faster aperture would have been better choice. - Removing the ND-filter was stupid. - Should support UHS-II - Some improvements to the battery life, it's terrible. - Microphone input and USB-C should've been added.
Lars Isaksen, these features won't necessarily be more expensive by next year. Also, 1200 usd or even 1000 usd is pretty costly and should have enough built in margin for additional innovations.
Well if you are ready to pay 3000$ for all that than yes. Otherwise, you don't appreciate the powerhouse it is already. There are limits to technology and production cost. You can't have it all. And while you list is something I support like many, its not reasonable to ask for all that and same or less money.
For those with budget, no issue at all. For the conscious one, like me, considering a compact an almost all around camera for travel, would do away with Fujifilm X70/XE-2 with 27mm f/2.8 with the XF 18-55 as back up. Thanks Chris and Jordan as always!
For half the price it would be fine. I also don't get why every Sony model needs to get more expensive. A6000, 6300, 6500, RX100, II, III, IV, V, VI... stop it.
Normally technology gets better and also cheaper, so that you have the same price with more features. That the cameras (especially Sony) getting more expensive with each model, doesn't make sense.
Michael Kehm If Sony could sell massive numbers of the VI, the price could come down. That's not going to happen. Do the prices of new, upper end models of Subarus, Fiats, Fords, with new features, etc., stay the same or come down? No, they rise, and for the same reason. How about high end bicycles? New releases cost more with each new release. The A6000 is still available and so is the RX100 V, so it's not like you're forced to buy the latest and greatest VI.
But normally you also get new entry level models with newer technology. The A6000 will always stay the same. And that's stupid. If the A6300 and A6500 are not replacements for the A6000, then they should at least make a NEW A6000. Just like Nikon or Canon does with Nikon D3000, D3100, D3300 or D5000, D5100 or Canon Rebel T2i, T3i. And not let the old be in the market for the same price it costs 4 years ago.
Was really looking forward to the Mk VI. Sadly the no mic input, nerfed ND filter, drop in aperture particularly make it a no buy for me despite the extra reach and colour improvements. Other ergonomic issues and buffer lockout are less problematic but overall too many compromises for the money.
Obviously the wardrobe choices were a highlight for me, although am i reading too much into Chris's shirt as a countering statement? Anyway, looking good guys, see you soon!
The best camera is the one you have with you. There are so many missed photos/videos because a large camera distracts the subject(s). This camera fits in my pocket and can shoot very quickly and in LOW light. I do wish it was less expensive. NOTE- These are very expensive to repair. Do get/use a leash or mini tripod stick. These are small and slippery cameras. I now have three versions and II, Iv and V. I don't hink he VI is worth the upgrade, but well worth it if coming in cold. The older versions are available and SUPPORTED. Buy an older version if a budget concern.
Signifficantly cheaper, even a cashback deal is actually running in many countries, PLUS: Faster aperture and ND filter (the VI isn´t coming with one).
the mark5 is still the best, if only they gave it a software update to get HLG and the new menus it would be great. mark 6 is just a smaller and cheaper RX10 alternative, which is pretty sad when you have greater zoom range image quality will always be worst, and then you lose the aperture and you also lose internal ND filter. this new zoom lens seems even more fragile than before
Totally agree, i'll stick with the RX100 V, which is really the perfect sweet spot for this camera. The zoom is nice in concept but i feel that more people are using this for video now so the additional focal length is pointless, especially when compromising on the lens speed.
Glad I went ahead and purchased the RX0 instead of waiting for the RX100VI. This pushed me to get a handle on using my iPhone for photography/video, and between the RX0 and the phone I’m happy.
Isn't the RxO basically like a phone camera (sensor size/ quality)? How did that even hit anyone's radar as anything but a specialist camera for multiple camera set ups I have no idea... It seems limited or expensive outside of special uses... Not meant for use as a stand-alone camera even.
It's the same sensor as in the RX100 series. If you want to know what the camera can do, check out Sony's Alpha Universe RX0 playlist. Unlike the RX100VI, it has a mike jack and can be used, with an adapter, with standard ND filters.
Sad that they did not know to put the camera in 50mm equivalent to get the optimum closeup (macro shot) capabilities like the MANUAL and Sony Site says...
Mobility is really underrated. I think there are some people who want to enjoy their trips while get some interesting shots when needed. This point and shoot can get jobs done while not being a burden for your trips. Except for the price it is. But I think people who consider buying this would not feel price is any problem for them.
The best camera is the one you have with you. Agreed o mobility- There are so many missed photos/videos because a large camera distracts the subject(s). This camera fits in my pocket and can shoot very quickly and in LOW light. I do wish it was less expensive.
Literally the only benefit to me would be for taking photos at a baseball or football game and not lugging around an rx10 for that. But I agree, no ND filter sucks.
Wat, how did you make the eyepiece of the viewfinder pop out? My 100V doesn't do that. You have to pop the finder and then move the eyepiece out manually, then push it back in before the finder can go down.
The extra contacts needed for UHS-2 interfere with the memory stick ones. Unless Sony decides to ditch MS for good, you'll never see a UHS-2 singe slot camera, or dualslot dual UHS-2 body.
+ferongr: Good point. But Sony should make the switch. After all, Sony makes SD cards as well. (They can still sell Memory Sticks for older models that only use them, but probably only four per day are sold around the world anyway.)
Y’all easily make the best camera reviews on RUclips. My only wish is that you would put in a “blooper” reel at the end of each review as I’m sure with these two dudes there are a few of them. Would make the videos that much better.
nice video, thank you ! I have a question, if you say you could only use the internal mic for this video, how did you shoot the kayak zoom at 1:35 was it really internal mic ?
Chris, a question. I will be travelling Europe for 2 weeks this summer and have the RX10 mk1. Is the convenience of this ones small size worth giving up the constant f2.8 and built in ND? 1080p is all I need for video. Thanks
Lucky Never the lack of ND is more about exposure than how smooth the footage is. Unless you mean the depth of field? If by smooth you mean the frames per second then you would actually raise the shutter speed meaning your lowering the exposure, so you're less likely to need nd. But yes you're probably going to be shooting in f8 at least during the day.
idontwanttotalkabout no you would want faster shutter for faster frame rates, that then get slowed down later. Otherwise when they are slowed down, each frame will blur even more than 24fps. Typically you double the shutter according to the frame rate. 24fps = 1/50, 120fps = 1/320
James Travis I'm guessing he means non stuttering appearance which is what you get if you have to shoot at 1/2000 in bright sunlight which a nd filter really helps with.
Good morning! I own Sony RX100 since it first came out till now & debating to upgrade it to RX100M6 because of 2 important features (to me) are: 1) I can't find "self-portrait- one person" function on the old camera helps me a lot when taking family photos with little kids & cats that don't sit still. All I have to do is set the camera on a tripod & select that function then let it take non-stop photos. Then select the ones I like. The new camera Sony RX100M6 only has "Self-timers (cont.): 2 seconds/5 images. 2) As I don't know anything about camera, the function with "?" question mark on the Sony RX100 help me a lot. I just press it & it will tell me the setting I'm on will do what... I would appreciate if you could help me to figure it out how to use the new camera to complete the 2 mentioned concerns. Thank you in advance!
2:11 "If I had a beautiful girl in here with a wide brimed hat looking out in the distance from behind that would be like an instagram 10,000 likes easy." 😂
What happened with the framing at 13:26? :D Other than that a nice review. Still jealous about the MyMenu with not being backported on my a6000 and a7ii... By the way, I still find those short cuts to the dpreview website for comparison hard to follow - the eye starts figuring out what is shown, which crop is for which camera etc and then before looking at the actual crops, the video cuts back to you. I rather like the plain side-by-side comparisons as you did for the colors compared to Panasonic. A website with all its options and toggles simply doesnt work for short cuts like you do even though I get the point of that - to promote the website.
At least it would be great to get the direct links to the shown comparisons in the video description, so that one could have an easy look and taking the time and pausing the video - which is also not the best option.
Since I have no need for any vlog-friendly flip-up screen I find the Mark 2 version of this camera still works for me. Better zoom as in 28-100 and 1.8-4.9 isn't too bad compared to the newer RX100 models.
For those complaining about no ND filter. for the price, isn't the mag filter or lens-mate the solution that is not to expensive and gives the options of other filters. Be nice for the price of the camera though too have a solution like this thrown in
What still photo (Pro) compact camera with video function. But primarily stills and articulating screen. any suggestions? Still Image quality , High ISO, Macro capabilities, wait for the Canon G1 X Mark lV?
Great video! As an RX-100 Mark IV owner, I wish you'd been more vocal about the 4K video overheating limitation - you mentioned it, but it didn't make it into the final conclusions and it is THE primary complaint I have with this camera. It's a huge drawback and may cause buyer's remorse for some people. It's incredibly frustrating for me to be shooting a 4K video and have the heat warning icon come up. Can you think of any other consumer electronics that can only be used in certain modes for a few minutes? 🤬Other than that, great video - keep up the good work! Oh, and as a former Calgarian who shopped at The Camera Store, it's really nice to see this partnership you have with DPReview. 👍😁
he there I bought this camera last week please can you show us the best setting for blog and other purpose as I switched to sony rx100vi from Canon G7x m2. thanks
This is my travel mate on short trips.IfI leave mye A9 or/and A7 III at home, this is always in my bag. Since this review was made NISI has launched M6, a filter kit tailor-made just for the RX 100 VI and VII. Four filters and holder in a small, compact case. And not expensive at all.
Sony still sells the old versions. Personaly I'm hoping they make something to replaced the cancelled DL1850. That zoom range with an external mic option would be a vlogger's dream, and also make for a good landscape/architecture focused travel camera.
Thanks for the review Chris/Jordan and DPReview. Given the high cost of this camera, my mind is shifting to the A5100 line. Do you think Sony will come up with an upgrade soon? Or is the A5100 line discontinued permanently?
I really like my RX100V as the camera to take when you don't want to lug a camera around, especially for the nice 4k video, but the omission of the ND is a real pain in the VI (also the price). There are after-market ND solutions like LensMate but it's a pain. I have a couple of questions, if you have a sec: (1) How's the video stabilisation, as on my V (m5 in Sony-speak) I find it's poor in 4k (and while I did buy a Crane-M gimbal you lose a little on compactness... although it's probably the biggest camera I'd want to use on a gimbal for extended periods). (2) I assume the HFR video saving hasn't improved and it saves in "real time", so a 4.3 sec clip shot at 10x slow-mo takes 43 seconds to write to card? (3) I also use Cine2 for video (PP6) but changed the colour mode to ITU709 (I thought it was just me, but I've seen others who have done it too), and have seen Still recommended to go with Cine2 as well. Any thoughts? Oh and really interesting comments about the lens, the RX100V lens is really good at f4.5 and f5.6 but less so as you move away from them.
Compact cameras as far as I know very rarely and maybe never have wider than 24mm (35mm equiv) focal lengths. Wide angle of view gives a unique perspective and differentiates the photos. However affordable ultra wide angle zoom lenses have usually barrel distortion which is very unflattering for faces. Small mirrorless cameras can accept wide angle zoom lenses with minimal barrel distortion and that is a good reason to avoid a compact digital camera. The only good with most compact cameras is that they usually have very small digital sensors and that permits super telephoto lenses with great focal lengths. An example is the recent Nikon P1000 which has a focal length of 24-3000mm (35mm equivalent). Yes 3000mm focal length and 125 times optical zoom. With a little digital fine extra zoom the focal length can reach 6000mm and celestial objects like the Saturn planet or the International Space Station can be shot and appear in photos.
Graham Ramsay As a professional photographer it is a great camera for working out how you may shoot a location or subject; whilst you are in the design stage Also the raw files can be youed in the final production for detail shots where it may be too costly to get a larger camera in position; for car interiors of the cabin or motor.
Why does a UHS-2 card slot matter? I am using a UHS-1 card in my A7III and it works even in 4K 100mbps video. You must shoot fast - I have never waited for a buffer to clear - like ever.
This Channel was dead until Chris and Jordan came here. That was a wise choice.
I wouldn't say dead but muted, perhaps.
TCS is dead now after they left tho
You're way too kind about the video on this, not because it looks bad, but the 5 minute 4K recording limit and the overheating really kinda make this not very good for even basic video shooting.

Josh if you're attempting to record your kid's soccer game or something, the 5 minute recording limit and overheating are definitely deal breakers.
@Chelle It's called a back up camera lol

Wat, how did you make the eyepiece of the viewfinder pop out? My 100V doesn't do that. You have to pop the finder and then move the eyepiece out manually, then push it back in before the finder can go down.
I'm getting this basically because of the longer lens- something my very photo-capable phone (Pixel 2) doesn't have. I'm upgrading from RX100 M3 btw.
1200 camera no mic input, 8 minutes of recording. Good for street photography. Dead end for video.
2:11, of I get Leica Q2, it’s 28mm, can I get a shot like this?
Hi Chris, this Sony Rx100VI looks great especially with the 24-200mm zoom lens, AFI and crisp images.Well done SONY 👏

Guys, if you give focal lenght 35mm equivalent info, please also give the aperture equivalent info! As DPReview you should certainly know this.
You know when Chris uses the word juxtaposition, he's going to swear in his next sentence...
i have the original rx100 and the focusing motor is dead, so the cam is useless brick
so the high price for this is a no go
better to spend on a lens
mine too. when turning on the lens wont extend fully and the camera refuse to function properly
I had one too that died about a year ago. But with the VI out, I picked up a new mark I at its new lower price: about $370.
Mine too. Very annoying.
What's up with the framing at t=13:15?
Haha, Chris and Jordan together in the hammock.. that's true love between two great friends!
Can you use the flash as a light for video at night? Like on a phone the flash becomes a permanent light when shooting video?
hi, have this new mark the same overheating problem like mark V?
Whitch RX100 model is the best for low light photography?
Why no low light shots?
They showed low light performance compared to other cameras...
How long does the battery last by normal fotografy
It's about 105F/41C in Vegas today. I wonder how long this camera would last before shutting down.
What do you think is the best point and shoot camera that is 20mpx? Any recommendations? Thank you.
Great review, guys. I've been considering this camera for a while now and your feedback has helped tremendously. Cheers.
Still waiting for a new lumix gm series with bigger battery and faster engine. Maybe, just maybe 😅
Chris, a question. I will be travelling Europe for 2 weeks this summer and have the RX10 mk1. Is the convenience of this ones small size worth giving up the constant f2.8 and built in ND? 1080p is all I need for video. Thanks
Without the ND filter, are we forced to shoot in F8/11 for smoother footage?
Lucky Never the lack of ND is more about exposure than how smooth the footage is. Unless you mean the depth of field? If by smooth you mean the frames per second then you would actually raise the shutter speed meaning your lowering the exposure, so you're less likely to need nd. But yes you're probably going to be shooting in f8 at least during the day.
James Travis actually, you want a slower shutter. Unless you want to add frame blur in post.
idontwanttotalkabout no you would want faster shutter for faster frame rates, that then get slowed down later. Otherwise when they are slowed down, each frame will blur even more than 24fps. Typically you double the shutter according to the frame rate. 24fps = 1/50, 120fps = 1/320
idontwanttotalkabout although I've probably misunderstood what you've said so sorry about that 🙂 it all depends on what he means by smooth...
James Travis I'm guessing he means non stuttering appearance which is what you get if you have to shoot at 1/2000 in bright sunlight which a nd filter really helps with.
I wonder who makes the decision of where you guys shoot? 😬
Which would be the best SD card to use with the new RX100 VI? Thanks
Is that 24fps RAW with continues auto focus and without exposure lock?
The build quality needs to be upgraded along with a new sensor & overheating definitely needs to be fixed for the $1200 price tag.
Chris and Jordan are brilliant 🔥🔥I will follow Chris wherever
What tripod do I get for this camera?
could you perhaps do an overview over all the rx100 cameras?
Be nice for the price of the camera though too have a solution like this thrown in
If you guys report the focal length in 35mm equivalent, why not report the aperture in 35mm equivalent also?
How are the photos at 200mm equivalent
Rx100 mk6 or panasonic tz200?? Panasonic 320mm but f6.3, sony 200mm but f4.5 i dont know...
What memory card do you recommend for the RX100 VI? Does it support UHS-II? Thanks!
What still photo (Pro) compact camera with video function. But primarily stills and articulating screen. any suggestions? Still Image quality , High ISO, Macro capabilities, wait for the Canon G1 X Mark lV?
8:11 I love that every shot of Jordan that Chris takes, he comes across like a cold blooded killer.
Can't believe you guys can't break 100k subs
This is the camera store?
I have used RX100 IV, and using RX10 II, for video both are great, for still, I recommend a6xxx series.
Good detailed review. Happy to see Chris and Jordan working with DPReview now 👍🏻
The RX100VA has come out. When will we see a dp review on this on PLEASE!!
I just got this camera and I only have 25, 50 and 100 fps available. How can I get 30, 60 and 120 fps?? Thanks!
Can you compare it to Leica C-Lux?
He mentioned Panasonic ZS200, and Leica C-Lux is same camera with higher price.
he there I bought this camera last week please can you show us the best setting for blog and other purpose as I switched to sony rx100vi from Canon G7x m2. thanks
*Are the colors improved in RAW* as well as JPEG? I was disappointed with the greens especially (for foliage) with in the first RX100.
Every camera maker chooses their own color palate that makes the RAW colors what they are.
always like the choice of sceneries by these two.
For the panosonic lumix gh5 used to shoot this video what lens did you guys pair it with?
Dang... You guys are killing it. Great review!
New Leica C Lux compare to this?
Hi thanks for the great video! Question, I have the Sony Rx100ii. Is the picture quality the same or lesser on the ii?
Thanks Chris and Jordan. Nice review !
Thanks for the good vibes! Keep doing what you do!
I can't believe they still have heat issues. I left the Sony system a couple years ago when I sold my NEX-7. I assumed it was fixed at this point.
love these new reviews! I wanted to know if you guys ever edit the photos you take on these adventures?
The reason why I don’t like the rx100 series is because the stabilization sucks but the thing that I like about it is AF is lighting quick
The optical stabilization is indeed not so good but the combination of software stabilization and optical is amazing.
Birds On A Stick true
Sony still sells the old versions. Personaly I'm hoping they make something to replaced the cancelled DL1850. That zoom range with an external mic option would be a vlogger's dream, and also make for a good landscape/architecture focused travel camera.
Should i take rx v or iv....... btw rx vi not supporting mic isn’t.
I have a couple of questions, if you have a sec:
(1) How's the video stabilisation, as on my V (m5 in Sony-speak) I find it's poor in 4k (and while I did buy a Crane-M gimbal you lose a little on compactness... although it's probably the biggest camera I'd want to use on a gimbal for extended periods).
24 degrees C, [75 degrees] and it overheats in less than 8 minutes. That's purely abysmal performance for even a $400 camera.
Why does a UHS-2 card slot matter? I am using a UHS-1 card in my A7III and it works even in 4K 100mbps video. You must shoot fast - I have never waited for a buffer to clear - like ever.
you will also get faster transfer rates when importing your files to your computer.
I think you should do more hammock shots.
What a fantastic review. You’ve got me second guessing now… between this and the Canon G1X mark iii.
is this camera store?
is there anyone can tell me how can take time lapse with sony rx100vi
Really nice camera for discreet street photography
Loving that "Zoom Bro-mance" segment!
The "RX100 VII in 6 weeks" remark sounds amazingly realistic.
Change the bitrate to 60Mbit/s to record longer in 4K. With my RX100IV I get 30min of continuous recording without shutting down.
