Wow, even Sony themselves don't make comprehensive guide videos like this. Hundred thumbs up to you sir.
Thank you sir ;) I'm trying my best to help those in need out.... I'm really glad you are finding my content useful and informative! A big thank you for all the comments!!
i'm at 6 min and already amazed by how incredibly well you describe everything. It's so clearly explained, but also make me feel like i'm exploring a marvelous peace of creation and make me love the camera. Thank you, that's a talent of yours, that's amazing :)
I really appreciate your comments and I'm glad you are finding the video helpful Gabriel ;)
I bought the VI more than a year ago. I only used it as a point and shoot to get better resolution than my iPhone but never figured out how to use it beyond that. Your video is wonderful and perfect for a beginner like me. I'm looking forward to being able to finally understand how it functions and achieve better results than the iPhone! THANK YOU very much!
IPhone is crap. Got a Galaxy instead.
5 years later, this video is still the best tutorial resource for DSC-RX100
I bought the camera on the advice of a friend who knows a lot about cameras. I myself am a duffer with cameras & photography. This video EXCELLENT! Just right for a duffer like me. Thanks a lot. 👍🙏
Thanks for sharing :)
Best video I have seen, Sony don't give you a manual thats any use at all. I'v had the camera a year now and was really struggling to understand the vast menu you get. This video has set me off on the right path to learn, can't tell you how grateful I am, Will be checking out all your other videos Graham
Thank you Graham for the very nice comments and I'm really happy to hear the video helped you out ;) Many more Sony How-To Videos Here: ruclips.net/p/PLFE32AB0363640EDF
This is without doubt one of the best instructional videos on You Tube. I've owned perhaps 20 different cameras over the years. I will soon buy both an RX100 vi and an RX10 iv. I have White's books and Friedman's books on both cameras. But I've learned more in 35 minutes from this video than I could have gotten from the books in a week. Subscribed to your channel, obviously.
thank you! i just bought this camera 2 days ago on a whim because i needed a super small point n shoot that took DSLR level photos but was light weight without a huge footprint because i was planing on taking it with me for motorcycle camping where space is very limited. this video helped me out greatly mainly with navigation of menus and understanding each and every little icon.
Very good news and thanks for the comment!!
Can't believe how you can talk continuously for a half hour, and actually do a great job explaining the camera. Nicely done!!
Thanks and yeah, I can just ramble on and on sometimes it amazes me as well ;)
Just bought a secondhand VI and couldn't be happier, or so I thought, and then I found your channel and
The Holy Grail of Sony RX100 VI tutorials!
Welcome aboard!
Bought this camera recently. Your video was extremely helpful. I really appreciate it! Your channel is now my go-to for Sony camera tutorials.
Best video for starting out with the rx100m6, no other like it, Jay seems to understand that not all of us are great at using this camera so we need full descriptions, Great job
Great teaching video
Jay, GREAT video, and as a lifelong Canon dude who just bought his first Sony, I'll be referring to it a lot. One suggestion: add timecodes to your description. For example, I was wondering how to shoot HDR video. I figure it's in your video somewhere, but as a reference, it would be easier to be able to just jump to a specific topic.
I'm glad I stumbled upon this vid so I know you did a whole tutorial on the menu and functionality. I'm very new to photography. Never been big into it, but I just bought the VI last night after a month of research. I leave in April for a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine, over a 6-7 month period. And this is the camera I chose to take to vlog and take pictures of the adventure. These vids are gonna be a major tool for helping me figure this thing out.😅
I just got this camera and when I say I’m a dumbass with photography. I mean it. Watching this makes me feel more comfortable with this camera, I actually bought it a year ago and I am just getting it out of the box in the past week and experimenting. This video is awesome. I’m going to watch it over and over.
I bought it 3 weeks ago. and I love it. it's my first camera
Best RX 100 VI Guild ever, Just brought one, and been disappointed, looking thigh the menu to try and find something, killing. I ended up use my note 8 phone instead sick I really learnt so much, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am not such a fool.
I'm really glad the guide helped you out! Be sure to practice using various settings and you will have the camera functions down in no time ;)
Just got the camera - thank you so much for this video! Very very helpful to get started using the camera.
You are very welcome and thanks for the comments!!
Thank you!! This is THE REVIEW of a new camera!!! There are tons of open box videos, which are not informative.
Thank you for the kind words, but My full Sony RX100 VI Review is actually Here: www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-rx100-vi-review-real-world-lab-and-tutorials/
Thanks for the great video tutorial.👍
I have come from a Sony A7iii and my first RX Camera will be the RX100 VII. Will be referring back to this video.
Best and most informative video I’ve ever come across. I’ve recently bought this model of Sony and I’m ready to explore away from Auto thanks to you.
Awesome and thank you for the comments!
This video is fantastic. I look forward to viewing the other specific topics. I took this camera on an extended trip instead of a larger DSLR. I was so pleased with the versatility and quality. I shot in manual mode much of the time (even manual focus) and was pleased with the control I had of the images.
Very good guide for my camera !
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the comments :)
Got mine tonight, checked out a few videos to help me out... yours is the best one so far. Thank you so much! #subscribed #liked
Excellent instructional video. Clear & concise, step-by-step review of features with good quality video of camera up close. Looking forward to additional videos.Thanks.
Thanks Rick ;)
Just here dropping some appreciation thank you for this video
You hve saved me hours of reading the manual. Thank you!
Thank you Mary for the comments and kind words ;) I'm really glad I could save you some time!
Thank you very much, very detailed guide. Just bought mine and your video was what i am looking for..
Such a great video ...!
Thanks man, this is awesome for a complete noob like me
now im sold out for this camera..thanks a lot!
Great video 🙌🏼 and love how the links is in the description for the other videos. You making it real easy to learn.
Thanks Denzel ;) I really appreciate the comments and feedback on the links!!
Hi, could you please make a video on the best settings for the Sony Rx100 VII, thank you
This was a fantastic introduction to the camera. Thank you so much.
Thanks, can you remind me the setting for landscape? I have the V, not the VI
I recently got the RX100m3, just found this video and Your chanel, very informative and helpful, thanks
October 2019 just bought great video it was helpful
Do you have a video on how to set-up the remote feature for this camera?
good stuff just got my rx100 vii
Awesome tutorial! I've had this camera for four months now,and have taken some great shots. Perfect for what my my particular camera usage needs are. This video will definitely help improve on my knowledge of using this camera. Thanksagain!
Great review just bought the M7 so it helped me enormously , thank you.
Thank you and here is a very similar, but different beginners guide video for the M7 if you would like to check it out ;) ruclips.net/video/q57UXSqkoYo/видео.html
thanks for the video! it's so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
This is perfect, I needed this, thanks so much Jay!
I greatly appreciate all the information. It would be helpful if you slow down and elaborated on some of the features. Those of us that are just starting don’t have the experience that you do.
I really appreciate the comments and feedback :) I totally understand what you are saying, but the video would be hours long is the problem I face.... Have you tried pausing as you watch and play with your camera? Also, if you have any specific questions, please free free to ask! In addition I have a ton more videos explaining specific features in more details here: ruclips.net/p/PLFE32AB0363640EDF All the Sony cameras work the same pretty much, so when looking thru the list it doesn't really matter which camera I'm using for the given tutorial ;) Jay
Excellent first guide on this camera, thanks a lot Jason!
Jay - I recently discovered your RUclips channel - and just wanted to say thanks for the extremely thorough, highly informative videos. I really appreciate you sharing your in-depth knowledge combined with very “approachable” style.
Much appreciated Dan and I'm happy to help :)
Great tutorials!!
Thank you!
Thank you! Your video helped me get acquainted with the camera quickly and easily. I'm coming from a standard point and shoot, and I really needed this tutorial. I'll be checking out your other vids! Again, THANK YOU!
Great guide!
Thank you :)
Stellar video Jay.
Wow! Great video, thank you very much. You really helped me out in the understanding of this incredible camera!
Thank you!
this was sooooo helpful!!!! thank you!
You are very welcome, and thanks for the comments!!
This is very helpful , thank you !
You're welcome!
Thanks for making this !!!
Thank you for the nice comment ;)
Honestly, the Sony RX100 4 is by far the best camera ever despite of the new features these new camera has.
Good overview and appreciate the detail. Helped me a lot.
Fave stars 👏
Very informative. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Excellent vid thanks!
Thank you!!
Dude you are awesome! Thank you for taking time out to do this.
So helpful!!!! Super thanks for your tutorial!!!!
Very helpfull, thanks
You're welcome!
Great Help!!
Awesome, thanks for the comment!
Hi Jay,
When I am in Aperture Priority mode, it seems that the F stop only goes up to 11. Can it fo up any further? Thanks
I remember the great compact Olympus camera xt3 sensor 1984 .Sony is the same compact and smart camera at this time
Thank you .
Welcome 😊
Great video, thank you!
Awesome, I love the video!
Thank you
You're welcome
Hey Thanks Dude! This is great little video that I think is going to save a couple hours of dickin around. Kudos, Gracias, and/or I owe you a beer!
Much appreciated Alex ;)
any way of getting a good bokeh for portrait shots instead of just macros?
Your best bet for the maximum bokeh effect with this camera and portraits would be to get the background scene as far as possible from your portrait subject. Then zoom in to 200mm effective with the camera and get as close to your model as possible depending on how you want to frame the shot. The further the background is in relation to your subject will ultimately determine how out of focus the background looks. Or in other words, the best Bokeh effect. Larger sensor cameras and/or faster lenses make this much easier, and the backgrounds do not need to be near as far, just to give you a little more information. WIth this camera however, I would start with the tips I just gave you and then play around from there. I hope that helps!
@@Jason_Hermann thank you ! will try
Great video, learned a ton of thinks. How can I use my RX100as a webcam, either via USB or HDMI ?
HDMI would be the easiest way via a Camlink geni.us/6aodP for example...
Very nice video, thank a lot. You me mentioned links for zoom and focus features. I could not find the link under the video. Could you pls let us know how we can reach these videos? Thanks again.
Thank you and Here is the auto focus tutorial: ruclips.net/video/fXKhJgnb9mg/видео.html I don't have one for zoom, sorry...
Great video => liked and subscribed
Thank you, Jay for your response to my question below. Another question….can anyone recommend a camera case for the rx100vi that has a grip on it? The ones I have found won’t work because of the grip. Thank you so much.
I don't think they make any like that, because the case itself tends to act like a grip a lot of the times depending.
Appreciate the video. Could have done without the 2:45 of intro/ explanation of how RUclips channels work however
Thank you for the comments and feedback ;)
Thanks!
Thank you very much DJ :)
For a beginner I would recommend an hx90v or hx99 ... let them start and see if they enjoy it ... for a lot less money. I doubt a beginner could tell the difference in the images.
Jay, Great help! I am having a problem getting the camera to connect to my Iphone. Can you explain the WiFi and Bluetooth setups sometime? Thank Again!
same here - many options and manual is really no help.
Great video..
What a great video. Can you tell me how to increase the saturation of the photos? Compared to the DSC-HX90V, the pictures of the RX100 MVI are faded with few vibrant colours.
Thank you for the help
You can change your creative style to Vivid and that will fix that ;) MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Creative Style]. helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1750/v1/en/contents/TP0001140462.html?search=creative
@@Jason_Hermann thanks a lot
Thank you for the tutorial!
But How do you transfer the photos to and iPhone wireless... I downloaded the playmemories app and I can’t do it! Please help!!!
Have you tried the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile App?
thanks A LOT for the video, I'll check others as well.
Great video. Got my camera yesterday & this has helped so much.
I have a question & hope you can help. I followed through the menu with you & on the record settings it will only let me go to 25p 100M. It doesn’t give me a greyed out option of 30p 100M, as you recommend. Is this to do with the memory card? I’ve just bought a 256gb integral ultimate pro SD card but have a feeling that might be where the problem lies. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Your camera is set to PAL mode, Mine was set to NTSC. It depends what region your camera was designed for. MENU → (Setup) → [NTSC/PAL Selector] → [Enter]
Re Memory Recall: The are actually several pages of items for saving to up to 7 memory banks. This is about 90 items of data spread over about 10 pages. Use the rocker down area when in Memory Recall to see all pages. This feature is so much more powerful than the function button or My Menu which only allow you to change settings one by one. With Memory Recall, changing to a different memory bank can change many settings simultaneously. A real time saver. Memory Recall also can store the screen view as well as the horizontal and vertical default focus points for flexible spot. Documentation in the RX100 m6 Help Guide is very poor. This topic could use a comprehensive video if you don’t already have one. It took me about a month to appreciate all of the nuances of Memory Recall after I bought the original RX100, which is far less powerful (only 3 banks and many fewer pages of data).
Thank you Kent! I really wanted to keep this video as simple as possible for newer users, but I really appreciate your input and sharing of the knowledge! Perhaps I will create another video with a more in-depth look at a few things. The camera is crazy powerful!!
Hi,
Is the touchscreen only for focus or also for example the menu?
On this camera just focus...
Hi, question! On my pervious sony cameras, my viewfinder would always show my photo for a few seconds after taking it. On this camera, it doesn't show me my photo unless I go to check it out. Anyway I can can change that? thanks!
Yes, you can change that in the menu here: MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [Auto Review] → desired setting.
@@Jason_Hermann thank you!!!
Great tutorial. We just one but I do not see a time lapse mode. Does it has that option?
Awesome video. So how well does this camera (or any camera) do when shooting a video, and lets say it’s in Auto, Program, or Aperture mode and the camera has to pick a shutter speed... does it pick a shutter speed that obeys the 180 degree shutter speed rule, or is it close to that? What about when zooming out, does it keep the shutter speed close to the 180 rule, or goes the shutter speed increase as if its following the focal length rule.
It’s always perplexed me on why these cameras don’t have a menu option to force the 180 degree rule (if possible to obtain). It could basically use the shutter Priority logic, and force the shutter speed to be 1 / 2 x FPS
Is it weird that my lens takes several seconds to retract when powering off? I thought it was a frustrating but harmless quirk of the VI but I see yours closes immediately after powering off.
I believe this is normal as far as I can tell.
Can I use this camera (or RX100 VA) to shoot northern lights? What's the best settings or mode for it?
Hi Jay. Could you please upload some original photos in archive somewhere, like google drive or any other host you like?
Yeah, I have a sample photo gallery up here: photos.app.goo.gl/QzLPEKxFsNpGMDmC9 Also, be sure to check out the full review of the RX100 VI which also has a link to the sample photos gallary in the description area here: ruclips.net/video/JWlShZk0KfY/видео.html
Thanks,
Jay
Thanks. Damn, that foto "Happy Birthday" is pretty much noisy. Other fotos seems fine.
Hey @JaySonyAlphaLab Thanks for making these videos on the Sony RX100 line. I find them to be very informative as well as the production value is done very well. I've been trying to understand my new Rx100 VA better but I haven't found much on youtube for it. Would you mind giving some advice on if I should ascribe the RX100 V videos info for the VA, or would it be closer to the VI due to the updates that were given to the VA. Thanks
I want the ND filters - but I also like this Favorites Menu. So the 100VA has both.
My question is if I gave up the Favorites Menu and bought a much cheaper 100V, isn't the Function Button going to basically be a kind of poor man's Favorites Menu?
I see the difference, Favorites is really cool, but.... how much cooler is it than using the Function Button? Is it worth chasing the VA just for Favorites?
I would won't both, but must have the built in ND filters knowing what I know now these days. The favorites menu is really nice, because you can load it with almost any setting and it's hard to find settings in the Sony menus! The Function menu you can't load with any setting, only some settings... so they are different things really... If you use a lot of different camera modes and settings I would go for the VA, because otherwise you might get frustrated with the Menus in my opinion over time, knowing you could have got the camera that has favorites which helps...
Great tutorial!! I’m vacationing Cairo soon. Which camera would you bring, Sony RX10 iiv or the Sony RX100 vii?
Would be nice to have this video browsable by moments…
Hi
I have a question!
how can I use this camera to live streaming or video conversation on my computer ?
i am using windows computer
thnaks
Thanks for these GREAT videos! I am thinking of buying the RX100VA but really need to know beforehand if I can use the ND filter in manual mode, i.e. use the ND filter with a fast shutter speed... I know, I know it sounds crazy but that is what I need :-) Many thanks!
Yes, based on what I am seeing you can have it on Auto, Always On, or Off:
MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [ND Filter] → desired setting.
Menu item details
Auto:
Automatically turns on the ND filter based on the shooting mode and brightness.
On:
Always uses [ND Filter].
Off:
Disables the [ND Filter] function.
Thanks very much for your response! Really love your channel. Great work!

Hello Jay, I have the RX100VI VI. My laptop is a MacBook Pro running OS Big Sur. The PlayMemory app does not work with this operating system so how do I transfer the photos from camera to laptop? Thanks
I would not use the app, and just plug the camera into the Mac with the USB cord that came with the camera. Check out this video for reference: ruclips.net/video/Uc8LQMRd2Pc/видео.html
Great video! So helpful! I just recently bought an RX100 Va because I wanted the faster lens compared to the Mark VI. I had one issue with the camera and sent it back. For some reason, when on single shot mode, the shot to shot time was very very slow...1.5 seconds or more. This was perplexing since with multi shot, the speed was phenomenal. Is the normal? If so, why would one choose to use the single shot mode? I missed quite a few shots because it was so slow. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thanks, and as far as your issue goes, did you have the 2 second self timer set perhaps?
@@Jason_Hermann thanks for replying. I don't know and I can't check because I was so upset that I returned the camera. However, I think it was a lemon since I just bought an A6400 and the default settings are fine with no such slowness problem.
how do i delete all the pictures at one go?
MENU → (Setup) → [Format]. That will delete the entire memory card in one shot ;)
