@@Jason_Hermann Hi there. I just got this camera in the mail but when in video mode, I can hear the zoom making a lot of noise as it zooms in and out. Is this normal to be able to hear the zoom in and out on the actual video recording? It seems really loud.
@@Jason_Hermann they should make a biger point and shoot with 400mm zoom, in between the rx10 and rx100. an rx50 would be perfect for a small purse or sg. for casueal wildlife and family use it would be a perfect companion next to an iphone or high quality camea smartphone, with a usable biggger zoom.

This is a textbook example of how to review a camera, easily the best I have ever seen. So its September 2024, do I buy the Sony RX100 V11 today for use as a travel camera or wait for something else?
It's still a great option today in my opinion and the technology has not really changed that much to improve quality beyond this for the ultra compact cameras...
I’m a new RUclipsr, after editing my last video I realized that the quality was soo bad! So after purchasing my camera yesterday THIS video and many others of yours have been life savers! New subscriber here! 👏
Excellent video! I just bought this camera at Christmas and have been loving it. This video has been very helpful in learning about the options more in depth. Great visual and verbal instruction. Thank you for sharing.
I just picked up this camera. not a professional photographer. This video really helped me figure out how to set up the camera and use it. Great job !!! 👍
Beyond grateful for this video and I'm sure future videos I'll be watching. Just got my new camera and want to use it this week at a concert. I have been trying to shoot basics the last 2 days, but any suggestions on large arena concert use would be appreciated.
I would probably just leave in in P mode with Auto ISO and zoom in and out as needed taking photos and videos. The lighting is so insane at concerts and changes so much it's hard to say what specific settings to use...
Excellent tutorial. Very useful. We bought the camera 4 weeks ago and took about 2000 pictures during our holiday. But we had one issue. Every 200 pictures or so there were a few )completely) blurry ones, with not a single spot on the picture sharp. So it is not a matter of having the focus at the wrong place. It even happened when taking pictures on a tripod with the self-timer (so, no movement issue either). Any idea where this could come from? We also had the Mark III before and never had the issue there.
Even though I wouldn't exactly refer to myself as a beginner, there were still a number of take aways for me from this excellent tutorial. Thank you, Jason. I used the Mark III version of this camera for many years before I decided to upgrade to the Mark VII last year. Reasons for upgrading were the the auto focusing system as well as the mild tele reach, albeit sacrificing a bit on the quite reasonable optical quality of the 24-70 lens of the mark III. I am using RX100 as an "always with me" camera when my primary camera - the Canon R5 - is too bulky or needed for wildlife shots on hikes with the family. In this case, the Canon is equipped with the EF 100-400 L and the RX100 serves as the landscape and portrait camera. However, being primarily a Canon shooter, I must admit that I do struggle a bit the Sony menu. In your tutorial, you mention the Zebra function for video. In fact, this is also available in photo mode (full manual in my case). I find it really useful as it could possibly warn me of overexposed areas in my scene, if only I knew how to correctly set it up. The challenge in landscape with people in the foreground is usually that the either the people are too dark or the sky is totally blown-out by over-exposure. This could possibly be prevented by lightening the foreground up with the flash. But when I expose for the landscape and then activate the flash the exposure simulation on the display basically treats the flash as an unlimited light source that may reach the farthest point at the horizon. I wonder if the exposure simulation could be set up such that it would just ignore the fact that the flash is activated. I'd appreciate it, if you can point me to the video where you explain some of these issues in more detail. Cheers, Urs
I would just use the histogram as apposed to the zebras for ease of use and so the zebras don't block what you need to see. If you press the display button on the back of the control wheel you can cycle thru until you see the histogram. On the right is highlights and it will show you it clipping if over exposed.. That 1" sensor only has so much dynamic range, so bright back ground and faces in the shade are not going to be possible in one shot unless you use the flash in fill mode maybe? I have not had that camera in a very long time so I'm not 100% sure about the flash options. Zebras can also work and based on the number like 95 for example will show you when the highlights are about to blow out. helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1920/v1/en/contents/TP0001552915.html?search=zebra
Thanks for responding @@Jason_Hermann You are right I guess, the histogram is a more reliable source of exposure information than the Zebra. I actually did set the zebra to the 100+ in the hope that it would allow for some particularly bight spots to be blown out but I did not really notice any difference between 95, 100, and 100+. I also struggled quite a bit to find the settings for exposure series in the Sony menu structure that I still find pretty awkward, but that's probably just me being more used to Canon. In fact, I searched for this function in the menu, as is the case in Canon cameras. It would never have occurred to me to look for this function in the single/continuous shot fn menu. Once I found this with the help of the manual finally, I did not understand why anyone would want to individually press the exposure button for each shot of the series. So, the sense of the BRK S function evades me completely. But I think the BRK C is really going to be useful and I am a bit annoyed that I did not search for this function any earlier. It would probably have yielded some stunning pictures on alpine hikes with the family last week. I do not trust the in camera HDR function because I want to have all the data in raw format and do the processing in LR and PS, and this is regardless of the camera brand. Just one more question: in one of the your videos on the RX100 vii you briefly show the camera with a quite intriguing base plate installed. I thought it might be from SmallRig but although they have a quite elaborate rig for the RX100, I don't want to sacrifice too much of the camera's compactness by adding a wooden grip. So I wonder what that base plate in your video was and where to source it.
Hi Jason, excellent video on what is a very complicated camera. I am actually asking for advice. If my question is out of turn just let me know. I want to photograph fungi. I have managed to get some really good pictures by experimentation but would appreciate knowing what you think would be the ideal settings for low light macro and dynamic scenes. Thankyou
SUPER - and I have experience! Always used Sony cameras from digital dinosaurs thru Alphas and this served as a wonderful refresher. I learned a few things too. GREAT job and I will watch your other vids. Thank you.
Jason, What a terrific video. I've owned three different Sony RX100's and never really understtod all the features. I've owned the Sony RX100 VII since it was introduced and relied on the manual (big mistake). Thanks to your terrific video, I know how most of the features of my camera works. I look forward to looking at your other videos on this terrific camera.
awesome tutorial! i just bought the mark 3 and its helped me a lot, as it is quite similar. Also been watching your other video which explains the different photo modes. Thank you!
I too bought this camera yesterday. Your video was a fantastic tutorial and got me up and running after one hour. Many thanks for taking the time to produce such a thorough, informative and easy-to-follow lesson.
Great tutorial. Thumbs up and subscribed. I bought this camera at the beginning of November and its NYE. Just now getting around to using it. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the excellent content Jay. I've only had this camera a few days now but watching your videos has made learning its features a joy! With past camera purchases I'd buy the tutorial books & download the manual. I did download the manual & as others mentioned it would take a while of eye strain to get a fraction of what you covered. It's great to watch & try what you are teaching. This camera is amazing & with your content I can explore & be more proficient faster. Really appreciate your usable content so clearly conveyed. Thanks again!!!! Bob V
I would have thought that one of the most important camera functions for new camera owners would be the delete function. So far I havent worked out how to delete multiple images without going through a long process deleting one at a time. And of course...there are no logical clues available for me to work it out with! A beginners video would have been the logical place to learn that info surely. I did learn a lot from this video though & appreciate that it is out there for confused people like myself to learn from. So thank you.
What you want to do is format the memory card to delete everything quickly in one action... MENU → (Setup) → [Format] I thought I mentioned that in the video, and I apologize if I did not... Jay
Thanks so much for this! Question: I note that the camera will run off USB power. I have a powerpack with an output of 5v 2.1amps. Is that safe to just plug in directly vs using the a/c adapter that comes with the camera? (Seems this camera does not require using a dummy battery either).
Fantastic Video....Thank You so much for taking the time and effort to make it....My RX 100 is being delivered tomorrow and really looking forward to getting my paws on it now..
I don't have the camera in hand anymore so I am not sure. I think if you turn on the camera by popping up the viewfinder it will automatically shut off when closing. However, I think if you turn the camera on with the power button and the viewfinder is down, the LCD screen will have priority. So, if you pop-up the viewfinder then and close it the camera will switch back to the LCD screen? Have you tried playing around with the viewfinder settings?
Thanks for your video and the nice presentation. I was trying to use the Panorama Mode with my Sony RX100 VII camera. Unfortunately this is not working. Please tell me if I have to do anything else to make this work
Thanks so much for the detail and step by step outline you work through. Just picked up this camera and your video has made me even more excited about this purchase, it's usage in our upcoming travel & adventures plus every day options. Awesome 🤩
Jason you’re the best I have learned so much! I sent you a little tip for all this help! Sorry I don’t have much money and I know you deserve more but keep doing this amazing stuffs! I really love the content and it’s so helpful for newbies like me! God bless you man
Absolutely the best video I ever seen on buya camera I'm buying this tomorrow I was looking for a camera fir taking pictures now I found a nice small camrea.
I hope you and your family are in good health. Liberty NY (Red Apple Rest) brings back memories. Great presentation. Very useful in my decision whether or not to purchase the camera. Can you tell me if RX100 is suitable for street photography at any hour of the day? If not can you make a suggestion? I want to stay in the compact camera arena. TYI Joel
Hi Jason, Another excellent video. I have a question regarding my RX100 vii. On page 6 of the Toolbox icon under File/Folder Settings why is my New Folder not available? When I chose New Folder I get the following message "This function is currently disabled". I have firmware version 1.00 which I believe is the latest. Do you have any ideas as to why the New Folder selection is disabled on my camera? Thanks
I'm honestly not sure I never tried to do that. In the manual it says in the notes area that folders will be automatically created in certain situations.... It seams like you should be able to make one. You have the camera in photo mode correct?
@@Jason_HermannThank you Jason for your reply. Yes, I'm in photo mode. It's just a PITA that my day to day images, sometimes in the hudreds, all get saved to one folder on my SD card. I'll just have to live with it as is. Thanks again.
Wow - great video! I've been using the a6400 ever since it came out, but just picked up the M7 to lighten my load a bit on hikes. I'm used to the Sony menu system, but still picked up some great tips from your video - thanks!
Phenomenal camera! Pictures and 4K video were sharp and in focus. I put the camera on “P” and everything else automatic. I did burn thru some batteries but the quality product delivered, that was minor. Just buy a couple extra batteries. Thanks for the tips, it’s my first Sony and look forward to any additional videos.
You don't have to, but it makes it faster when importing which is why I do it. The reason it is faster is because the computer needs to read all the files on the card before the import will start using Lightroom for example.
Hello, thank you for the tutorial. I have the sony cyber shot, exmor R, but does not have the connector for microphone. Do you know if there is a way to adapt a microphone to this camera?
Omg, this was the best video ever! I'm a Sony newbie, and this video has definitely made me feel a lot less intimidated by my purchasing decision. Thank you for this. I am headed to check out the rest of your tutorial videos on this camera. :-)
would you still consider this one of the best compact cameras on the market at the end of 2024? im looking for a good point and click camera to last me the next couple years since I'll be traveling to a different country. i don't care much about video, just photos.
It's the best ultra compact option in my opinion, but there are larger sensor point and shoots and larger lens equipped point and shoots as well to chose from. All of them are great in there own way, but this one is specifically awesome because it can fit in your pocket easily and has all the power of a Pro camera pretty much.
@@Jason_Hermann perfect! i really appreciate you responding despite how old this video is! I just picked one up off ebay because of how compact and powerful it is.
I saw your video on the Sony RX100 VII for the first time. I am impressed beyond words; the way you explain is amazing. However, it is impossible for a mortal like me to remember all the sophisticated features and how to set them etc. Do you have a printed book which explains everything about the RX100 VII? I find books much more convenient than videos. Would feel honoured if you let me know. Once again, you are an amazing teacher.
Wow, thanks! I do not have a book, but there are many on Amazon you can check out here: amzn.to/3b8q1ay Gary Friedman's books are extremely detailed from experience. Also, the Sony Help Guide is pretty darn awesome and can be printed from a downloadable PDF file if you like. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1920/v1/en/index.html
Hi. If I use the image stabiliser in active mode, doesn't that also reduce the image resolution? Background: We make trash films and this is the first time we're about to use a better camera, namely the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 VII. We only shoot in Full HD because our editing equipment is simply too slow for 4K. Also, our films are not good enough in terms of content to justify 4K. 😅 What presets would you recommend for filming? We are not professionals. The camera should help us out, so to speak. Maybe make a video for amateur filmmakers as well? Thanks for any reaction! 😊
Yes it does technically, but there is more than enough resolution to maintain 4/k so the end result looks effectively the same... HD you have nothing to worry about either in that regard.... You can use the creative looks to get different styles on camera if you want. I use the standard profile, but you can play around and get many different looks with those tools...
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you for answering. 👍 By they way, what is "intelligent" about the highest level of stabilisation? I wonder if there is a better instraction-manual online somewhere since the one that came with the product explains almost nothing in detail. ☹️
Thanks again for this video, as well as the others in your RX100 vii series. I'm methodically watching them, camera in front of me, as I ensure that I'm learning all the features & capabilities in my new (March 2023 purchase) camera. I'm only half way through the video but this is SO HELPFUL!!
Fantastic, Jason. You are the top of this game. Your absolute fluency is mastery. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Thank you for the video! I was hesitating if to buy this camera, but your video helped me to decide. It's great camera with so many functions!
You're very welcome!
what a great tutorial. I watched it all. and I usually watch how to videos that are 15 mins max lol. good job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant Jason. Massive thanks for a terrific tutorial.
20 seconds in and I know this is exactly what i need! THANK YOU!
awesome to hear and thanks for the comments!!
Jason, another great job. I just placed an order to purchase the camera. Can't wait to set it up, thanks
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks, I have now ordered the RX100 for our holiday in New Zealand. Again, many thanks for your good work and advice.
Just received my new camera. Your overview was outstanding and appreciated! Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I’m a new RUclipsr, after editing my last video I realized that the quality was soo bad! So after purchasing my camera yesterday THIS video and many others of yours have been life savers! New subscriber here! 👏
Awesome to hear Study Buddy and best of luck to you :) Just keep plugging away, be true to yourself, and your audience will find you!!
Tutorial is very helpful. Learned a lot of things in your video. Thank you.
Thank you :)
Jason is fantastic. He has helped me so much, and I highly recommend watching as many of his tutorials as possible.
@@Jason_Hermann, I'm sure I'll be shooting videos more than photos. Thank you for this information!
A great professional presentation that we all want, thank you very much!
Great video, Jason. You have provided service. Thank you.
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing and I'm really glad the video helped you out ;)
Thanks to you, I just ordered one. You should publish a instructional DVD. This camera is Rocking just like tutorial!
Really appreciate this video. I got this camera last week and this video has really helped me learn the camera.
Great to hear and thanks for the comments!
Wow. Excellent job Jason. Just the right balance of overview & detail. SO worth the time to watch.
Thank you Doug :)
Glad it was helpful and thanks for sharing :)
So so massively helpful, I'm on my way to check out the other videos about this camera that you've made.
Thank you :)
awesome tutorial! i just bought the mark 3 and its helped me a lot, as it is quite similar. Also been watching your other video which explains the different photo modes. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you!
just bought this camera which arrives tomorrow, 'used to Sony menus but this camera looks like its got an extensive one! Can't wait for it to arrive!
I too bought this camera yesterday. Your video was a fantastic tutorial and got me up and running after one hour. Many thanks for taking the time to produce such a thorough, informative and easy-to-follow lesson.
You my friend have another subscriber. I'm an absolute beginner & this was really insightful. I'm getting this camera at the end of January!
Thx for this movie. It really helped me :) I also buyed the front grip really useful! I will look also to the other videos.
I love this guy he really takes the time to explain his camera. Thank you so much for the lessons I have learned . You the best
Good Video, thumbs up. But where is that Video mentioned about all the different modes? That would help me, a new rx100 owner alot. Thx
ruclips.net/video/KNz8RGQz0so/видео.html Thanks Jon!
Great tutorial. Thumbs up and subscribed. I bought this camera at the beginning of November and its NYE. Just now getting around to using it. Thanks a lot.
Best user guide on YT by a mile!
Thank you Kevin :)
AHHHHH! I just learned something I've been trying to figure out since I got this camera. Thank you!!!!
I'm happy to hear that ;) Thank you for the comments!
Bob V
Thank you Bob :)
Jay
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you.
Thanks so much for this! Question: I note that the camera will run off USB power. I have a powerpack with an output of 5v 2.1amps. Is that safe to just plug in directly vs using the a/c adapter that comes with the camera? (Seems this camera does not require using a dummy battery either).
Yeah, you can do that, but the battery still needs to be in the camera...
Thank you! I feel like will get so much more out of my camera because of your tutorials.
Happy to hear that and thank you for the comments Charles :)
Fantastic Video....Thank You so much for taking the time and effort to make it....My RX 100 is being delivered tomorrow and really looking forward to getting my paws on it now..
I have a question, is there anyway to change the default setting, like not turning off the camera when I shut the view finder?
I don't have the camera in hand anymore so I am not sure. I think if you turn on the camera by popping up the viewfinder it will automatically shut off when closing. However, I think if you turn the camera on with the power button and the viewfinder is down, the LCD screen will have priority. So, if you pop-up the viewfinder then and close it the camera will switch back to the LCD screen? Have you tried playing around with the viewfinder settings?
Thanks for your video and the nice presentation. I was trying to use the Panorama Mode with my Sony RX100 VII camera. Unfortunately this is not working. Please tell me if I have to do anything else to make this work
What is the error message? Are you in Jpeg image quality mode?
Best lesson ! Wait next . About pp1-10, about best practice for any situations , use with zhiyune crane m2, with ninja recorder or any monitor ...
Thanks so much for the detail and step by step outline you work through. Just picked up this camera and your video has made me even more excited about this purchase, it's usage in our upcoming travel & adventures plus every day options. Awesome 🤩
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this instructional video. I just bought this camera
You're welcome!
Jason you’re the best I have learned so much! I sent you a little tip for all this help! Sorry I don’t have much money and I know you deserve more but keep doing this amazing stuffs! I really love the content and it’s so helpful for newbies like me! God bless you man
Thank you very much Nina :) I really appreciate it and I'm happy to hear the videos have helped you out! All the best, Jay
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for making this and for balancing the detail and usage with the basic entry level understanding.
Absolutely the best video I ever seen on buya camera I'm buying this tomorrow I was looking for a camera fir taking pictures now I found a nice small camrea.
Awesome to hear and thank you very much for the kind words :)
TYI Joel
Thank you Gumbo and I answered your question in another comment. ;)
Godsend - thank you so much, this is just what I needed as a beginner :-)
Thank you so much for this video!! Just got my camera last week and this was so helpful. Excited to watch more of your videos.
Thanks for sharing and I wish I owned one of these for hikes ;) It's perfect for that type of thing...
This is a great tutorial. It helped me a lot!
Glad it helped!
Thanks Jay. I was not looking forward to reading a huge PDF file. Great tips and explanations. Keep up the good work.
What mode do you reckon for a concert? ( taylor swift) auto or sport? Thank you
Auto should do a good job, if not try a few other modes for fun and see what happens!
Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial! Just bought this camera and your vid helped so much.
Nothing to say but thank you so much for your help
Thank you for the detailed tutorial! It was very informative and helped me learn a ton of features!
You are very welcome and thank you for the kind comments :)
Thank you for this video. Outstanding!
Thank you for the comments and I agree it's an amazing camera! Be sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell for new videos ;)
Nice video mate! Can I shoot waterfalls to smooth the water using this camera? Thanks!
Yes, as long as you can get the shutter speed slow enough in the given lighting situation.
Really helpful video, thank you. Can I ask though why you keep formatting your memory card? Is it something we should do often?
You don't have to, but it makes it faster when importing which is why I do it. The reason it is faster is because the computer needs to read all the files on the card before the import will start using Lightroom for example.
Well worth watching the whole way through. Great stuff. Will be checking out other videos on your channel
Hi Jason, have you noticed if the shutter sound on the vii is quieter than the previous versions?
It sounds about the same I would say, but no I did not notice....
A very good tutorial -five of five star. I will follow you here on RUclips 🙂
Thank you 😊
Hello, thank you for the tutorial.
What presets would you recommend for filming?
However, when I turn my camera on, I'm waiting for it to say "Hey guys, what's happening. It's Jay from Sony Alpha-Lab. Do me a solid." I haven't found that feature, yet.
