- Sony RX100Vii (RX100M7) Camera Review - In this review I look at why this compact camera is still able to survive in an era where most compact cameras have 'died-a-death' at the hands of smart phones. I will also review how I can capture professional looking images with a camera that has a small 1-inch sensor (small compared to an Alpha camera but large when compared to a smart phone). I look at some of the camera settings I chose to use to keep the ISO low and how to create figure/ground separation when shooting character portraits.

I own an RX100 VII. Whenever I start shopping for a more capable camera, I watch this video. It makes me realize I don't need better gear, I need to become a capable photographer. It is a pleasure to watch a pro explain the process and I am always inspired by what is possible to achieve with my very own camera.

Somewhat belatedly I'll second that comment. I wanted a more portable solution than my MFT gear, especially when out with the dog or otherwise out and about. Used my Samsung hi-end phones a fair bit, but hated the ergos. The RX100 is a revelation, with a little help from software solutions the results can be phenomenal. For the same reason as I use MFT cameras, my small hands are happy with the size and shape, although I always use the tether.
If only Sony could invent a grip for it. It would be SO easy to drop.

I've probably watched 30 or so reviews (other authors) till now in my search for a small premium camera and I haven't commented on any of those. I did want to say thanks for this review, though. You address the most important issue, in my view, which is "what image quality can I expect out of this camera" and you give examples. wow, the images that you took are stunning! I would never thought that it’s possible to take pictures like that on a camera with 1 inch sensor. Sony packed great technologies in this camera, that’s for sure, but your photo skills are out of this world

What a great review again! I was thinking for a while to get a small pocket one (have a73, a7r3), but not sure of which. RX100VII s smaller aperture concerns me a little, that is main reason to get it. But your video convinced me ! It s also a great teaching video as always. Thank you so much Mark! (Honestly, Sony owe you big as their imaging ambassador. Yes they have great product, but to convince people to buy into it, will need someone like you with deeper understanding and great skill of communication, to convey the message as honest as possible)
Thanks for your positive feedback - As well as looking at the attributes of this camera I used the opportunity as a teaching exercise around the aperture, depth of field and ways to keep the ISO low. Hopefully something that moves beyond the RX100VII and can be implemented by APS-C and Micro Four Thirds users as well.
I have both a V and VII and I love them both. The V is my go-to for low light live music photography

Good review. 3:00 Always worth pointing out that increased depth of field (dof) is has nothing directly to do with the smaller size of the sensor but with the smaller focal length lens that smaller sensors need to maintain the same field of view (fov) as larger sensors. So the Sony RX0 here is using a 7.9mm lens to match the fov of 24mm full frame thus gaining a big increase in dof, just because of that 7.9mm lens.
Love the format of this video review- a focus on the images. It took me a few videos for the RUclips algorithm to suggest yours, but it beats the rest by a mile. Their review focused more on the speaker/themselves than the images they took. I really learned a lot from this video and appreciate your work. Thanks!

I have an A7RIII that is my main camera however I bought the RX100 VII for my trip to the Caribbean because I didn’t want to carry a lot of gear. I got some pretty nice pictures that I even print and put on my wall at my office. The down side is in low light situations but is the trade off you pay for a camera thats small. With the RX100 m7 you can change the focus frame color to red....thats a huge Plus of this camera...Sony please please release a firmware for the A7RIII that allow us to change the focus frame color. Well in regards to the Rx100 I reallyy recommend it 100%.
I tip my hat to you Mark, a quality set of images and information. You show what few other reviews show, solid, thought out use of the camera! not just snapshots that show nothing good about it, instead comparing and doing things we would never do in real life.
I own the original RX100 and use it mostly for concerts (it works very well on the barriers at the front), but I am getting so tempted to upgrade all these years later to a newer RX model.... I can hope they bring back the F1.8 on the RX8. Which could be soon... I hope.
Thanks for the positive feedback John. I'm glad some people notice the quality of the photos in my reviews. I am often invited to watch a review where the reviewer talks a lot, but shows us only half a dozen photos of stuff that was in walking distance of their kitchen. This always has me scratching my head.
This has been the longest gap in model releases for these RX cameras so I am hoping this is due to COVID and Silicon chip shortages than falling demand for these compact cameras. Sony still manufacturer the version Vs with f/1.8 apertures, but the maximum f/1.8 aperture has to be sacrificed on the VI and VII because of the extended zoom range.

I have been so conflicted on getting it as I fear it's not as sharp as I'd like but this video has really steered me toward giving it a go. It's felt like abit of a gamble due to the price and not being able to try it out.
I'm put off by the x100v/vi due to the fixed prime as I really want to the zoom capabilities. The sacrifice is a bit of the quality with this camera but you've how good it can look and how the skill of the photographer plays a huge part in having great photo - no matter the camera!
Sony's autofocus tech is very appealing too!

Thanks for all the detailed information. I am still good with the IV and wait for the VIII, maybe, we’ll get the ND filter back then. I would even agree to 2 to 3 mm more body thickness. That is, because I assume the ND was sacrificed to the 24-200 equivalent lens (probably using more space in the body as the 24-70 of V and prior versions). - And Marc, even if your audio is good, I hear very good at high frequencies and for that I recommend: please use a DeEsser for your audio 😘
Impressed with my RX100 VII it delivers great quality images can't wait to take it with me on my second trip to Japan next year.
Now i just need to get my hands on a Sony A7R IV to go alongside the RX100 VII.

I have published ultra high definition images captured with this camera - if you can match this quality with a phone then buy the phone
March 2023. I have a mk V which I have always enjoyed the quality of my shots, all for personal use only and almost exclusive for my vacations. I do find the 70mm equivalent limiting in many situations when it is impossible to physically move my body to frame the shot. I thought about the VI when it came out and also the VII when it first came out but the high cost kept me from buying one. I have a full frame A7 but honestly am no longer interested in carrying the bulk of camera, lenses and a relatively large tripod when I travel or hike. I’m back to considering buying a VII and taking both the V and VII on my travels. I don’t want to give up the faster lens on the V for certain situations but I really want that little extra reach of the VII. The price for a new VII has not come down, at least in Canadian dollar terms. Do you think investing in the VII makes sense given my reasons even though the tech is a little dated now? Thanks for your thoughts.
Although the Vll is a 2019 camera it has the latest stacked sensor and AF tracking algorithms found in the A1 camera. It was ahead of its time in 2019
@@AlphaCreativeSkills. I did buy the vii by the way, very pleased so far. Just one more question. The largest aperture moves from f4 to f4.5 at about 100mm FFe but you talk about creating background blur by zooming in to 200 and getting closer to the subject. Am I missing something in the process, is there a way of getting f4 or f2.8 at 200mm FFe? Thanks

Glad it was helpful! - I purchased a cheap after-market filter adapter that allows me to attach filters to the RX100VII. NiSi make a more sophisticated filter kit and I typically use FreeWell, NiSi or Hoya Pro filters. Most of the time I am not using filters except to smooth waters during long exposures (longer than I can hand-hold the camera). Fixed ND filters have a higher quality but require that you have more than one, that you then need to change if you want a very precise shutter speed and aperture. Avoid purchasing a cheap variable ND filter as many of them are just a complete waste of money (uneven exposure across the frame, serious colour changes etc etc.). I'll call out my Patreon support channel again as I rarely get to answer questions that have resulted from my initial answers here on RUclips.
Ibought the NiSi 52mm True Color variable ND filter for the RX100vii hope thats a good one? I noticed when attaching the mounting the camera creates shadow in the wide focus length on the edges. Didnt see that in any reviews for the camera, kinda disappointed

Thanks so much Mark. Just purchased a used MkVII so those tips on getting great great depth of field & keeping ISO down will be put to great use! Also zooming tip for better subject isolation is very handy in such a small package. Looking forward to leaving my big Nikon kits behind on my next trip o/S, given what this little pocket rocket is capable of. 👍👏

This camera is so good for my needs that I picked up a second one just in case Sony is finishing the RX line. If an m8 comes out I do hope they make it so we can power it from an external battery bank. I can pack the camera, audio recorder, light, mini tripod, bank in a small waterproof cube the size of a toiletry bag. Makes it a no brainer for kayak/packraft/backpack tripping. Great video.

Many people say that compacts are dead thanks to the iPhone etc, but that is not the case at all, and probably won't ever be. There are a few features in this camera that I wish were included in larger cameras, such as multi-frame NR.

I recently purchased a cx100 vii. I lost the use of my right arm 33 years ago. I find the freedom of shooting upside-down using the viewfinder, with such a small pocketable size camera very easy. I wanted to shoot surfers from the beach, which is possible. The 200 mm zoom needs cropping in editing yet doable because of the image quality. Thanks for this fantastic video. It's inspired me to stick with the camera and learn to use it properly in order to get the maximum potential possibilities from what I already own, rather than rush out and buy a longer zoom bridge camera, suchlike the Panasonic FZ300, with a smaller sensor. Possibly the best video review on the Sony cybershot rx 100 vii I have viewed to date. Thanks for the time and effort that you have put into this video.

I really had to do some soul searching before I sprung for my MK VA, essentially over the short zoom range. I’ve honestly never looked back, but now I am in a position, and have matrimonial approval to add the MK VII to my camera bag (along with my MK VA....and my Olympus MFT) but havent fully talked myself into doing so, Yet. This review has inched me closer....

I’m deciding between 100v or the 100 vii…would you recommend going with the vii over the v? Is it worth the 300 price difference?
I find the extra zoom on the Vll, that you can’t do on your phone, makes the Vll my choice. It also has the best AF tracking of any RX
Hello Mark - What a great find this is. A very interesting and exceptionally well delivered tutorial showing the amazing capabilities of these small RX100 cameras. I realise that a small 1" can be a tad limiting but only in extreme circumstances. Can I please ask whether this camera is capable of producing crisp and detailed A3 prints and perhaps 18" X 12" Thanks again for a brilliant video showcasing your talent. Adam.
Yes this camera is capable of producing beautiful A3 prints. Keep the ISO below 640 if you don't care much for noise.
Mark, a query if I may. Are the Vietnam photographs lightly or heavily post-produced? I would be amazed if these were out of the box and you do say you do work on them in post. Superb review, thanks.
I spend no more than 1-minute editing each photo. Most of these images had little to no editing. I share Raw files from these reviews with my Patrons

I have a blog post on my website that outlines the changes in features for all 8 models (their are two versions of the V). Version lll acquired the Pop-up EVF, the V acquired the Stacked BIS and the Vl the 24-200 equivalent zoom lens. Your upgrade path will be dictated in what you want to take photographs of, e.g. you will need a V or later to capture rapidly moving subjects.

I appear to be a rare breed - photographer first and reviewer second. I think it's important to base a purchase on what the camera can achieve (as evidenced by the photographs) rather than a 'professional opinion' based on a handful of images captured in the space of 1 or 2 hours.

The photo in 15:17, did you use any lens? How far were you from subject?
That’s at maximum zoom (200mm equivalent) and then cropped to 4K in post.
Wow. I love your photos. This review was one of the best reviews I have seen for this camera and I have been watching them for a few days now. I know you can’t answer all questions but I will ask anyways...I may have to become a patron. But is there any value in buying a rx100 5 and 7 for the higher aperture or does the rx100 7 do enough even for macro work to not be worth the money of investing in 2 cameras for the purpose of having the 2 different focal lengths . I think though, you demonstrated the 7 definetely should suffice even with the 2.8 if a person absolutely can only get one!
You will struggle to achieve figure/ground separation with the wider apertures unless you do Macro with the V - you have to rely on zooming the lens on the VII and moving closer to achieve the background blur.
Mine goes everywhere with me. It really is the ultimate pocketable camera
Just took the plunge.. hopefully I won’t regret it. Been using nothing but my iPhone pro max and a go pro so this should be a step up.

as an ambassador, do you know why they took the ND filter out? was it a technical reason or a product segmentation reason? I can accept the f2.8 for a longer reach than the V but the ND filter removal was an odd decision...
I have an excellent relationship with Sony but they have a tradition of not making statements about design decisions. I have since purchased one of the many filter adapters that are available for the VI and VII so I can add the filters in front of the lens. You actually need to use a variable ND filter or ND 32 filter to lower the shutter speed sufficiently when shooting movies in bright sunlight using the widest apertures or for slowing moving water. The ND filter of the V just wasn't enough for me to complete either task satisfactorily.

Dear Mark, thank you for this wonderful presentation. I am so, so frustrated with Sony’s lack of interest in the RX line. The 2 arguments I hear are that Sony wants to sell entry level Mirrorless cameras, this does not float as the cost of a F4 600 (RX10) or 24-200 f4 (RX100) is beyond entry level and in the case of the 600, even beyond the capability of some professionals. The second argument is that this market segment has been taken over by mobile phones, this also does not float as despite their best efforts, no mobile can combine zoom range and image quality to the extent that the RX line can. Case in point , the 1” sensor DJI pocket is getting enormous attention despite competing with smartphones in the stabilised video segment and winning customers over. As for the RX1…..static from Sony despite the extremely expensive Leica Q range getting a lot of attention for a fixed lens camera. I truly believe from experience that travelling with interchangeable lens cameras is not only bulky but seriously inconvenient and distracting from the travel experience, something the RX line remedies due to lens flexibility paired with image quality. Sony is letting many customers down by not continuing to develop its RX line, it fills a gap between smartphones and interchangeable lens Mirrorless Cameras , a segment so much in need of attention.
I suspect Sony is currently working on an RX update and one of the Alpha managers went on record in 2023 to say Sony had not finished with the RX line. The arguments you appear to have been listening to is, in my opinion, just pure uninformed speculation.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I sincerely hope so, I found that I enjoyed photography so much more with a bridge camera than I did with a DSLR with f2.8 70-200, most specifically when traveling. I will lift my chin and hope Sony will continue to excite and inspire through its technology leadership . If so, I am most certainly in the market for an RX or 2. I own Fuji XT3, and a X100F, X70 and a canon G7X mk1. My dilemma is this. I love my xt3 but it’s no practical when out on holiday when you just want “snaps”, my wife loves the G7X but it’s 5 years old and the images are being to look very soft. The X70 is amazing that’s staying for ever. So that leaves the X100F, 3 years old and only 2600 shots taken with it, so it needs to go. I need a compact which takes GREAT photos, is pocketable. The Canon G7X is now up to mk3,, or do I go Sony RX100 mk7,, price isn’t a issue. Or do I wait for the Sony rx100 mk8, whenever that comes out. The x100F is definitely going it’s just which camera replaces it. Your video was both helpful and hindering lol. I always shot low iso and use flash a lot to fill in “under caps” etc.

I think the RX100 series is reaching maturity. What else would you need this camera to do? Better quality only comes from larger sensors but if you can keep the ISO below 320 this camera produces images that are difficult to distinguish
from images captured with a DSLR. As you rarely need to stop down below f/4 this is quite easy to do.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I have 3 RED DOT Fuji lens as well as a few primes including the 56 f1.2 “ now that’s a lens”, but on holiday I just want to take photos, not worry to much about compression or things like that. Sharp photos and good af and I’m happy,, flip out screen for selfie and the wife is happy. The more I look the more I am drawn to the Sony. If I buy it I will post on here my thoughts. PS I’m not a photographer it’s been my hobby since I got my 1st camera in 1978, a Zenith E SLR,, that taught you how to take photos 🙈🙈🙈😂😂😂😂

I purchased an after-market product whereby I can use 52mm screw-in filters on my RX100 VII. This is the JJC RN-RX100VI also allows me to use a lens cap to protect the built in lens cap. Nisi also make a push-on filter kit for the RX100 cameras if you don't want to 'stick' a product onto the front of your camera.

Just wondering if you are going to publish an ebook for this camera. Due to my activities like tramping and MTBing where weight and room is a factor this would be an ideal camera. My A7III is a few days food. Just ordered one

I was looking at 6600 it’s weight that I’m looking at especially with tramping in the hills and snow. Sometimes I’m a way for a week or longer and my A7III is a feed days food. I paid for the iPhone photography there is about 40% I didn’t know. I was dreaming this would do hmm.

Yes that’s correct -stopping down beyond f/4 doesn’t make a lot is sense when using a small 1-inch sensor as you usually have enough depth of field
Mark does the RX100Vii work with a phone App you can see the image and take a picture with your phone? This would allow remote shutter release in situations where the camera cannot be placed where you cannot see the screen.
Yes - the RX100 VII will work with Sony's Imaging Edge App on your mobile phone.

That is something to consider. Sony South East Asia asked me to enter the sea to photograph the fishing boats in Vietnam for their online commercial. I was up to my waist photographing the boats with splashing waves. I do not recommend this with an RX100VII if you want to keep your camera safe from damage. In fact I don't recommend that you do this with any Sony camera without a waterproof housing.

Tired of lugging around a dslr all the time but still want to have a camera with me for those unexpected situations.

Couple questions...
Looked at your samples on your Flickr acct Nice! You said you like aperture priority mode most of the time...Do you set the ISO manually or does the camera function do that automatically? Also, on your pans...i guess you switch to shutter priority to get the effect you want?
Lastly, do you use any type of cradle or bracket because it is so small i'm afraid i would accidentally drop it?

I shoot aperture priority with ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed and control the slow shutter speed pans by adjusting the minimum shutter speed. I outline all of the settings I use in my RX100VII ebook over at Patreon.com/markgaler
I'm a pro photographer and I am curious what mode you are shooting in... On a larger camera it's easy and fast to choose fstop and shutter speed in Manual mode...But with this camera it takes time .And we all hate to miss the shot...Since it seems you were happy with f4 were you shooting in Aperture mode?... Nice review. I have a Ricoh GRIII and love the fact that I can use it one handed for street photography which is my main interest. But I want a compact camera with a bit of zoom. What’s missing on the GR is the zoom and flash, which would be useful in street. Can this camera comfortably be used one handed for street? I notice it is just 30 grams heavier than the GR. Just an added comment, I was looking at the newly announced GRIII X at 40mm. But again, you are locked in at that focal length. Zoom would be really nice. Any replies would be much appreciated.
I have purchased a smallrig cage which has a large grip which attaches to the RX100 Vll in just 10 seconds. In this way I can pocket the camera or use it with a larger grip.
Had #1 and moved to #5. Amazing cameras. I'm not sure if I want to give up the 1.8 though... Anyway, watching this review in 4k is super. Can see all the detail very nicely. So easy to put on your belt and take a great camera with you without the weight.
Half of everything I shoot is at focal lengths over 70mm equivalent zoom and the figure ground separation at 200 equivalent is how I can emulate larger sensor cameras.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills mmm, I have to stand closer with the v5 😁 so by default everything is under that. From your pictures there doesn't seem a terrible hit from the higher 2.8 at widest while getting that lovely extra range.
@@orange42 Lot of people are shocked about the 2.8 how much more it is than the previous 1.8 and why people don't buy some cheap dslr or mirrorless instead. But for this money those have to be with kit lenses. Kit lenses start at 3.5 the very same people don't have any word about that. In the dslr world 2.8 is a decent aperture and going below 2 is something unaffordably expensive. Camera snobs often forget about that.
Okay, I've watched this video several times and I can't find the answer. (Please, excuse my ignorance, just got the RX100 M7 to shoot my son's Rugby games and getting back into photography.) Mark says @ 19:25 that he "slows down the "Shutter Speed." If you are in A-Mode, the ring changes the aperture. How do you change the shutter speed?

I have this camera but I don't think I am really the person who this camera was designed for. The RX100 VII is the camera I carry when I don't want to carry a camera bag so I am not sure why I need to go smaller. I used in underwater to capture that turtle (because the camera is waterproof) but I would have preferred to have been using a camera with a bigger and brighter screen to be able to see what I was shooting. The limitations of working with a fixed aperture, fixed focal length camera is something I am probably not going to invest too much time towards.
Bought one of these today and can't wait to give it a go as my point and shoot pocket wizard.
How would you review the camera after 2 years?
@@pellier08 Excellent "pocket" camera with good image quality, excellent zoom lens and many other features. The images are much better than using my iPhone. Very useful for street photography as it is vey inconspicuous.
Being a compact camera, I understand that this is aimed at travel/street photography but do you think this could provide the sharpness/macro needed for product photography in a well-lit setting? Thanks for a great review.

I'm a mk3 user and love it. I have bought and returned three more expensive cameras and lenses that couldn't match my mk3. I notice in the first motorcycle shots much more detail and crispness in the a9 shot of the rider's jacket over that of the rx. Is this just the a9 demonstrating its superiority or were you using a slower speed or something else-perhaps a different angle of illumination?
Nothing comes close to an A9 - Sony wants to market this as a pocketable A9 so I felt obliged to show one image from each captured just one lap apart. Both used relatively slow shutter speeds.
Thank you so much for this. I've always wanted to learn real photography but just never had the time. I'm almost 50 now and time to jump in. I really want a good camera and this sounds like a perfect jumping in point to learn the ropes on. I'm just deciding on this or the rx10 iv depending on if I think I'll need its range or this ones portability more. Any other reason to chose one or the other outside of the 2 reasons I just mentioned?

One fits in your coat pocket and the other in a camera bag. Image quality is the same (same sensor). 600 mm is useful if you intend to photograph wildlife.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Yeah so thats the key. How often will I need to take pictures in the 200-600 range. I can see how useful it will be in wildlife or events/sports, But not sure how often I'd do that. I'd mainly be taking pics of street scenes and the world in general. So it seems like the rx100 is best for that since it's always handy.
I know this is all individual, but how much time percentage do you spend photographing in 24-200 vs 200-600 range? Just curious. Thanks.

Hi Mark, I recently bought a RX100 V. I'd like to shoot in SS mode, with exposure comp on the front ring (control ring?)
To adjust shutter speed I'd like to use the rear dial by rotation, and to adjust focus point position I'd like to use the rear dial by toggle pressing the cardinal points.
Is this possible?

Its a Small Rig product. It attaches and detaches really quickly and is a very good fit.

What a great video , certainly shows what this little beast is capable of. I am in a bit of a situation where I need to save some money. I have a Sony a7iii with a samyang 135 1.8 and Zeiss 55 1.8, it's an amazing camera and I love it to bits. however I also have a young child and dog so when going out on walk or on days out the A7 and lens take up abit if room and can become quiet heavy over the course of the day. I shoot all types of photography but mainly photos of my little girl, dog and everyday things . I'm looking for something better than a phone but still capable of getting great shots something like this rx100. Do you think this is an option or would you say keep good of the a7iii. I do need the extra cash I would have left over so keeping both is unfortunately not an option.

My RX100 VII got the LCD screen scratched. I've purchased an LCD screen protector, but I also had an RX100 Mark 1 with a badly scratched screen and a soft screen protector that came with it from the factory was easy to remove. With my scratched VII, I can't seem to get a corner lifted up and wonder if it does or doesn't have a screen protector that came with it. Does anyone know?

No more expensive than a smartphone - good technology is never cheap. Use your smartphone if your don't need an 8x zoom
I am a novice in photography... I own a nikon D5000 and can somewhat handle it even with 300 mm zooming lens but when it comes to pocket sized cameras,( I own a Nikon S6300 ) somehow my hands shake especially in high zoom scenarios. Now my back isnt that good anymore and carrying the D5000 everywhere has become a huge problem due to its weight. So I am looking for something lightweight. My question is that do we need a tripod to take pics in this at 200 mm zoom?
None of the pictures captured at 200mm equivalent in this review were captured using a tripod.
Really nice review and images Mark! I have the RX100mkI since 2013. The mark VII has a lot that I would like to have upgraded. The slower max aperture holds me back somewhat going from f1.8 to f2.8 and I am also a little "disappointed" that Sony hasn't incorporated "Smartphone" tricks more into the RX100VII, like fake bokeh, handheld night shots et al. (such tricks could also be good for APS-C and even FF with the slow zooms).
The 1.8 to 2.8 is not a great loss for me as I can still hand-hold a shot at the first and last light of day with the f/2.8 aperture at ISO 100. I can get more bokeh or figure /ground separation by using the longer focal length of the VII than by using the f/1.8 aperture of the V. I made a presentation to Sony in Tokyo about how I thought Computational Imaging (as used by smart phones) should be incorporated into RX and Alpha cameras. Animal Eye AF in 2019 may be a sign of things to come.

I normally shot Sony FF and use the 35/2.8 when I want to go as compact as possible or a 28/2 and 55/1.8 combo when I want to still be compact but have more focal lengths to choose from. But at times the RX100mkI also comes out when I don't want a separate bag (I have it in a belt pouch). The one thing I would like to have updated the most is the AF-C performance and picking out the wished AF-point more easily. Both those things are rather slow om the mkI when one is used to the A9 normally.
The mkVII also lacks AF-joystick as the mkI does, but at least has a touch screen for AF-point selection I understand? How do you think the whole AF-point choosing works on the mkVII?
And also how is the flash light quality of the mkVII vs the mkI? Is it still finger tiltable for bounce flash? And finally how is the stabilization at around 24-35 mm? How slow shutter speed can one handhold it?

I can move the spot AF point by pressing the Centre button assigned to Focus Standard and then just use the Four-Way Control wheel to move the AF point. Pressing the Centre button a second time locks the AF button down, pressing the trash can centres the AF point. It's also a simple task to just put a central AF point on the subject and then let the AF tracking take over ( a focus a recompose workflow). I don't use the pop-up flashes on these cameras but h flash appears unchanged from all of the previous versions.
