Eeeee
The zoom test, is that just optical zoom or is it with digital zoom as well on the Sony Mark 7?

So glad that someone actually reviewed this for photography and not just as a video camera
You're welcome!
Believe it or not - there are still some left who care more about the visual art aspect of capturing memories than those who walk around with a running video camera to capture what ever comes along.
One thing that drives me crazy about almost all of these reviews is that no one ever talks about how close the camera can focus, or it's macro capability. This is especially important on a camera with a fixed lens, because you cannot change the lens to a macro lens. It's also a pretty easy thing to test.
Thank you. A lot of the videos only talk about the recording Videos capabilities. Not the photos
The best and complete review of this camera so far.
Thankyou!
Great review BUT please add labels for side by side comparisons!
Yes sorry, I ran out of patience editing this one, but I've done them for my latest Canon G5X vs G7X video...
No problem man, and congratulations for your channel 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Fantastic review Gordon, and thanks for comparing to the relevant competition as well!
You're welcome! I have more comparisons to come including that vlog video I teased here...
I've been watching you for almost 10 years now. Always the best reviews.
Well done Gordon. This is an amazing little camera. You are the only big camera channel to compare this camera to the Canons or to even to mention them.
Thanks, I think it's important to do that.
Thanks for the video. Audio jack is the biggest addition to this camera. It was needed!
Thanks, I agree!
I like the added stabilization in 4K.
I love the colours of the photo's made by the Canon camera's.
Concerning photographing moving subjects: I use a Olympus TG5 and the AF is really great (when there's enough light).
Pany LX10 needs an update add mic input and better AF now but they need to keep the f1.4 lens - prefer the lower apertures over the zoom capability
I'd like to see that too.
Agree. Also they need to improve the autofocus and ditch the crop when filming. crops from 24 to 36mm in 4k and from 24mm to 30 in 1080p. Would like to still stay at 24mm at all times or possibly have a slightly wider lens to start with.
@@Johak1982 10mm to 50mm - f1.4 - mic jack - now that would create a different compact vlogging camera
the auto focus feature is the main selling point of this camera . i love it
Your reviews are the best - so detailed and reliable!
I am so glad you mentioned the part about the lessor touchscreen functionality. No one seems to mention that, but i really want it and they don’t ever offer it, while everyone else does.
Thanks, I always try and be as thorough as I can!
Did not know your channel, but I love the format.
Thanks, glad you found me! I'm actually the oldest camera channel on RUclips!
Thanks Gordon, as always giving comprehensive reviews.
Thanks!
Thank you very much for the comprehensive and insightful review, Gordon!
you're welcome!
From a long time Fuji user. This is my favourite digital camera. I still love my XT4 and use it for shoots and for leisure but on a day to day basis rx100m7 is coming out with me.
I've just returned from a 3 week trip with this camera alone!
Excellent review, Gordon. Thank you
You're welcome!
Great in depth coverage of this camera Gordon and it has served to convince me to invest in my first ever RX100 to carry when the A series is just not practical - thank you for your clear and concise coverage.

Much needed in-depth review of RX100 VII- full of information
Thanks!
Thank you very much for the indoor sample photos and for thus reminding me of the difference to the DSLR + Sigma F1.8 that I'm used to. This completely killed my desire to buy any of these cameras.
You're welcome! Those portraits were at 3200-6400 ISO.
RX100 V"B" with the same tech + mic input of the RX100VII but with 1.8-2.8 24-70 mm + built-in ND filter for $900 would be the perfect pocket camera
I'm in!
Life on Days off that would be too much empathy and flexibility from rigid japanese engineers rather producing fiddle gadgets
...or a 24-120/2.8 or even f/4. The point is that a lot of us would give up some of that tele for some speed. I think they're aiming more toward muggles than serious photographers, with this one. There are a lot more of them out there, after all...
@@Smaug1 the long range is obviously great for travel, but I agree, for greater depth of field control, I'd prefer a shorter brighter zoom - like the Canons.
I’m waiting for that too!!! Hurry up Sony! I actually wish they would do another type of rx100 with a f1.2 or 1.4. I think that would be smart of Sony because they are doing those separate features to the a7r, a7s, and a9 versions.
You reviewed the g7 m3 first, and then this. Your so much ahead in the ball game. Hehe. Thanks!
Thanks! I had to hold back my final G7X III / G5X II review because of this one! But I did get to test them all side by side which was great!
Best review of mk7, g7x and g5x on RUclips
Thanks! I'll be posting my dedicated vlog comparison on Monday!
Another very thorough review. Thanks Gordon.
Cheers!
Always good reviews you make Gordon 👍
Great review Gordon , very detailed keep up the good work !
Thanks!
What is really upsetting about this RX100VII release is the Canon-like handicapping and pricing, caused by Sony's complacence of progress and lack of competition in the market.
For $1200 prosumers can get an A6400 + 18-135 kit that is at least a stop faster and more versatile.
For $800 prosumers looking for pocketable option can get a brand new 2-year-old RX100V with a faster lens and internal ND, which matter more for serious vlogging and 95% of hybrid shooting, especially in low light.
For $400 casual vloggers can get DJI Osmo Pocket that can shoot 4K60p with a built-in gimbal.
For $100 anyone can just afford a DJI Mobile that can be used with any smartphone they already have.
Thanx Gordon great review bro :) Awesome channel, loving it. Please keep em coming.
Will do, cheers!
Excellent review Gordon! Very thoroughly executed and extremely informative. Great work mate.
Thanks, you're very welcome!
@@cameralabs Hy! Did the g5x 2-s autofocus changed since the video, i like it more than sony, but that lets me back...
Thank you Gordon for sharing your experience & expertise. Its really appreciated & most helpful. Keep up the good work!
Gordon, this was a masterful review! Great work! ...and thank you!
Thanks, and you're very welcome!
We should thank sony for adding animal detect so we get to see all these lovely pets reviewers own ! Solid review again.
Thanks!
Liked your video, and thanks for your simplicity of showing us all these topics.
Glad you found it useful!
Excellent video. Lots of valuable information and very well presented. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Such a practical definite review and comparison with the similar cameras. I’m gonna get the Sony and keep my iPhone 13 mini, now instead of waiting for s24 ultra. Love the fact that you decided to use the beach for “testing” zoom. So practical.😅
I think 6400 is the best bet here with an external holder for the mic. Thanks for a fabulous comparison sir.
@perfumeguruindia what lenses fo you use with your a6400? If you don't mind me asking😁
You are truly an angel! Thank you for this!
All 3 perfect for vlogging honestly get a tripod and rodeo mic you get the perfect setup
he is not riding the mic so a Rode (or Røde as it is named) would be better, a rodeo mic sounds a bit wild :D
Fantastic, Gordon! You've got yourself a new subscriber for that detailed and waffle-free review. I have just upgraded my G7Xii with the RX100vii, mostly because of the face detection AND the mic input. I was getting fed up with the Canon losing focus on my face when blogging. Can't wait to get stuck in and exploit the Sony's features. Many thanks, all the best.
Do you still use this Sony camera? What's your opinion after a few years of use?
Great review as always, Gordon! Personally speaking, I wish Sony would either revert back to their older f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens, or borrow Canon's 24-120mm equivalent f/1.8-2.8 lens. Since this is primarily a natural/available light camera with a smaller image sensor, I think the need for better light gathering should be put head and shoulders above a longer zoom range, especially at US$1,200.
The Mark VA is available with the 24-70 mm (equiv.) lens.
Okaro X ...but does the RX100 VA have the sensor and technology from the RX100 VII? I think not. And that’s the gist of my argument.
The colours of Sony RX100 VII have a green stich shown at 7:12.
Best eval of the stability and AF capabilities over the MK VI. Thank you - excellent as usual Gordon!
You;re welcome!
Nice review. I liked both the detail and positive honest caparisons.
Thanks! I'm posting a G5X II vs GX III video very soon!
I love it you got me I am buying this camera today
According to Sony, you can only record 5 minute max 4k videos. The Sony AX700 doesn't have this limitation as you can record in 4k for 30 continuous minutes with the AX700. And the AX700 has better stability from handshakes than this camera as well as dual SD card slots. But this camera is cheaper than the AX700 and more compact too.
I have the camera in my hands and actually demonstrated the feature. if you choose the milder heat warning, it becomes unlimited recording. It's an official feature, but the camera body will get hot and that can freak some people out.
Most APS-C mirrorless cameras are really small but premium compact ones have a future too.
Love this detailed review! Does it have a beauty filter by any chance?
Gordon fantastic video,I own a Sony A7m3 with 70-200 g lens but find this pocket camera very appealing
check out my recent travel light video...
Expert review style! So glad I found your channel! I'm snagging the SONY this week! :)

@@cameralabs Well, lucky for you, I DO plan on buying it at B&H! :)
@@michaelyolch79 great stuff, thanks!
Great review Gordon, very well explained. I love all your reviews for gadgets. I had Canon G7X Mark II and after comparing both Sony RX100 VII and Canon G7X Mark III, I am thinking to upgrade Canon G7X Mark III. Some blurry effect with built-in ND filter really helps me.
I will have a vlog comparison between them early next week, and a full G7X III review coming later!
If the RX100 Mark 5a came with a 1.4 lens mic input and the same Focus system the Mark 7 it would be unbeatable
A 1.4 lens would be lovely, but all they need to do is pop that mic input on there and it'd be almost perfect!
I’d take the original f1.8 over this f2.8 mega zoom camera. Also, bring back the built in ND filter.
@@bryanbuff yes, basically the RX100 V lens.
Gordon Laing I watched your G7x iii vlog test and liked it better than this. The internal mic sounds pretty good too, relatively speaking. In your opinion, is the G7x iii a much better value?
@@bryanbuff I'm working on the comparison vlog vide I teased in this one, which should make a few things clearer.
Is it just me or is the greenish/yellowish tint of the Sony is back? The a6400 seems to have gotten rid of it, but in my eyes, most of the videos here lean towards green.
I agree the colour balance seems a little off or biased.
PS - it may be possible to correct the tint by applying a shift in the AWB settings.
Agreed
Thanks for this review Bro Gordon Laing!
You're welcome!
Superb review! Thank you for all the great info.
You're welcome!
well im off to pickup my Rx1000 Mark 7 which just came in today. Cant wait to test it out.
U seems nervous
I think high-end compacts are pretty much done, hence no VIII... as smartphones approach compact capabilities through computational photography and improving sensors each year. Mind you, phones don't *exceed* the RX100, but they *generally meet* the quality standard -- most of the time.
I'd like to see a Droid or iPhone with a 1 inch Sony sensor some day, that'll be epic. At this point, the benefit an RX100 offers over the latest Pixels and iPhones, really, is the 24-200mm optical zoom range, and the mic input. For typical JPG shooters, they're comparable. And for those working with RAW, they'll probably be looking at a Ricoh GRiii or perhaps the X100V.
Best Camera reviewer out there!
Thanks Shawn!
Great review, thanks. $1200 is a lot for a small sensor, fixed mediocre lens camera, regardless of all the wonderful features. Just my take.
yup, it's decent price should be ~400 at most
@@andreika6681 there are a lot of 400 dollar cameras on the market - you are free to buy any of them. Too bad not one of them comes even close in features and image quality.
@@baka_ja_nai i have rx100 mk5, paid 500e 2nd hand, mint condition and 1 yr of age, for me an object sold 1200 new, loosing half of its price just 1 year later (loosing nothing in its value) means its darn ovepriced for that it is. these cameras are made to last for 10yrs normally (with all programmed obsolescence they have, but still, rx100 are easy to repair, just 3 replacable blocks, mobo, lens, flash and à bit complicated cabling)
best review. greatly done
Thank you for yet another great review
Thanks!
Thanks for your review, it was very useful.

Nice video
This camera is ideal for light is right when I go into the hills or go up the local volcano for few night or two out. We have three one blew up and out the other is dormant (that’s the one you see in the lord of the rings) the other just simmers away and burps now and then
Gordon your reviews are brilliant enjoying your book thank you. Keep going back to it
Awesome Review as always !!
Thanks!
Since the front is not completely flat due to the lens always taking up some room there, they would be better off to put a small rubber grip on the front that is just slightly a bit more recessed than the length the lens sticks out when fully retracted. The front is a little too slick for no good reason.
There is a grip accessory, the Sony AG-R2 is a stick-on rubber grip which gives the body the same feel as the Canon G7X III
This camera is mind blowing! Just think about all the things packt in that small body!
Excellent review. Thanks.
04:20 it's possible to mount a cold shoe in place of tripod mount btw.
True
I have a Canon R6 with multiple RF lenses. I'm really considering this camera for when the family and I go out on trips. I have 2 little ones and it's getting really old juggling my gear and my kids. I'm just as worried about my gear as much as my kids LOL. This RX100 VII looks promising.
Check out my travel light video...
Interesting Sony with the body sizes layouts quite a few of the rx series and apsc Sony’s fit the same underwater housings definite advantage to keeping the same body re bags battery’s and used to ergonomics think Sony’s the only one if have previous model useful
Your boyd needs some stabilization :)
I have the rx100 mk3 great camera it came with grip and carrying case ,grip makes it 10 times better in hand, this camera delivers great images, and the camera is highly customizable without having to delve into menu system,I have a nikon d7500 but this is great to just put in your pocket and go out😁
I agree! I actually chose the Mark VII for the short UK trip I'm current;y on as my main camera.
@@cameralabs Do you have a link with some photos? Do you still recommend it today or is there another more recent super zoom compact with similar specs?
@@pellier08 here's an article I wrote about using the Mark VI - which has the same lens as the VII: www.cameralabs.com/sony-rx100-vi-best-travel-camera/ - also check out my Travel Light video at ruclips.net/video/q1NmJj7kkm4/видео.html
@@cameralabs Thanks! Did you notice differences between the VI and VI for picture quality? I noticed on your web reviews that the VI seem a lot sharper with better quality.
You can't beat a good comparison to give a proper measured idea about a camera. Superb as always Gordon! I can't say I like the green Sony tinge at all, frankly it made you look a little poorly, and I much prefer the brighter lens and grip of the Canon.
Thanks1 Yes, I agree the colours in the Canon portraits looked better to me
One thing I don't think you touched on enough was that the Canon lenses are pretty soft. I could see it in your static video. So not only is Canon good at blurring the background, it's good at blurring EVERYTHING.
Yes, the Canon video doesn't look very crisp
Great review!!!!
Thanks!
Bloody thorough mate.
That's my aim!
Awesome video! Any difference in IQ when using Electronic Shutter vs Mechanical Shutter? I really like the no-black-out viewfinder and rear screen in use, so wondering if there's any negatives associated with the function?
The on-board sound was pretty good, actually preferred it to the RØDE, the background pick-up with the on-board gave some atmos without distracting too much and your voice was clear and full.
My problem with sony still is color science. The shot comparison shows it very well, on canon you look great on sony you look alien.
Here in Australia, $1,999 just a bit ridiculous..
I hear you mate 😩
Not just Australia. $1200 US would get a person quite a nice SLR or µ4/3 outfit. However, if you think of the AF performance, in the hands of wealthy family people who can't track their kids, along with the general quality, a lot of people will be willing to pay it.
Im sad they dont give a option to buy with the old lens of the mark 4 et 5
me too
You mean the lens with lower f? If i could have it, i nearly would have bought it. But i don't need another camera, i need to use the ones i have.
YES! They could easily make an RX101 Mk. VII. Almost all the work is done already.
For rx100 mk6 they have rx100 va (old Len)
I bet for mk7 they will Ra version of it for sure.
Great review. Thanks for sharing. Still not a clear decision between g7xiii and rx100vii. 🤔 maybe canons new m50 due to be release could have the answers, despite being a little larger.
Thanks!
The Sony "Zeiss" lens is sharper. To me, that's a big one.
well if anything this will make my MK5 worth more when i go to sell it in favor of the q2.
Very helpful - thank you.
You're welcome! It's worth coming back again when RUclips has rendered it fully!
Hi Gordon
excellent video, how good is the image quality with say a m43 camera
keep up the excellent videos
Thank you Gordon!
You're very welcome!
There is a Sony made stick on grip available for all RX cameras, only £12 on Amazon (Sony AGR2 Grip for DSC-RX Series).
But why can't they have that already installed? Its not making camera any bigger.
@@kiisseli1337 You have the option of very sleek, trouser pocket friendly or rubbery tactile grip, marginally less pocket friendly. Got to love options.
Which one takes better pictures between canon g7x iii and g5x ii?
Did you ever figure that out? That is my question now
Vanessa Camarillo i actually did not a reply from him so I still don’t know...
Very good review as usual!
Sony pushes its strongholds even further while forgetting some basic features altogether. Af was already top of market and now even more (including a7r4) but menu and touch functionality is from middle age. Don’t understand why. Like a7r4, packed with top class features, unbelievably capable camera. But price... I bet Canon competition you just compared will sell more.
Great video. Have you tested the interval shooting? Would love to see the time-lapse and night-lapse capabilities of this camera
I knew Sony would do it!!!! A compact with mic jack and viewfinder. All Sony has to do is introduce the RX200 for those who want a shorter zoom with a faster lens; a update on the RX100 v. Yes Canon all you had to do was to include a viewfinder and mic jack on both G5X ii and G7X iii. But the former having the longer lens not 120mm but 200mm telephoto, and made the latter keeping the original lens 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 which it does. Ok may im asking too much from Canon.
Great and very objective review. At that price would I be better off going to a camcorder? What do you think?
BTW Gordon I bought your book on Amazon..all the best!
Thanks, much appreciated! Hope you like it!
$1200 USD...you have to be kidding right??!! That is ridiculous!! ( _Great review by the way.. as always._ )
Thanks! Well, you are getting a lot for your money, but yes, something like the G7X III is almost half the price.
@@cameralabs Just throwing this in from left field. In the format discussion of apsc, full frame, m4/3 which will die, imagine if this kind of quality/spec comes down to £500, in a truly pocketable format? imagine if compact cameras are the future.
@@liamlavelle7188 why does anything have to die? It's just RUclips clickbait. They can all survive.

glad to see the return of steven seagull :)
nice review. I love the idea of the rx100 viii but the value of an a6400 just seems much better to me?!
Other than size that is.
I'm gonna do a head to head!
Yep, and that's the ONLY factor (other than being better than a phone) for a lot of would-be photographers.
The facts are - that this camera is now 4 years old and today in 2024 still the best pocket camera on the market - according to my personal experience carrying this jewel in my pocket wherever I go.
I agree
Yes i would love buy this sony cam 😢 but cant afford it..so choose canon g7x mark2
Your the best! Got another sub!
