'Really appreciate the time and effort put into this thoughtful review, Jay. Thumbs up for sure and I'll be checking out more of your videos for sure. Thanks!
Thank you very much for the kind comments ;) I really appreciate it!
Just bought this camera 30th July 2024 ... Have the A7C had the A7iii and have the rx10 iv ...This rx100vii has the best natural colours ive seen to day --eye focus incredible ... just Wow
Thanks for sharing!
3 years after you uploaded this, it's still making a difference for people. It made a difference for me today, watching this video to learn my newly purchased (Yes, March 2023 buy) RX100 vii. I look forward to seeing your other videos on this camera, again being thankful now for what you created 3 years ago.
Cheers from Vancouver Island, Canada eh.
You're very welcome Mike and thanks for sharing :)
How do you like it so far? Really looking to get this camera mainly to shoot my 2 year old
@@IVAN2233 - One of the things that I've used it for a lot is shooting video in daylight of moving trains, at a local train museum. I like the autofocus and I Love the external mic jack.
My main negative issue with it is that in low light (such as dawn or dusk) for video, the autofocus struggles when there are shiny moving objects. I've learned that this is normal (shiny objects in low light will confuse an autofocus), but I wasn't expecting that. So maybe that's more my own issue.
Sir, you just cost me $1300! Seriously -- this is a fantastic review/overview, answered all the questions and misgivings I had. Yeah, I knew from other reviews that it was a great camera, but I wasn't ready for that astronomical price.
Anyway, I just ordered one and am very excited.
Re misgivings -- you also addressed them (things like inconveniences in the physical layout and not-great battery life), but there were so many features you covered that I just gotta have.
Thanks for a great review. I like that you have a personal touch along with lots of technical detail.
I've been looking for a powerful point and shoot for quite some time now, for more convenient travel photography and concert photos, but I've been hesitant to pull the trigger. This has, by far, been the most helpful video about the Sony RX100 VII I've watched this far, and Jason was SUPER helpful (and fast) in answering my questions. So grateful for this video, thank you so much Jason! Instant subscribe!
You are very welcome and thank you for the very kind words as well :)
After three days of viewing a lot of RX100VII's reviews this is by far the best one I've found. Thank you Mr Hermann, thank you so much.
You are very welcome Ricardo :)
The best most comprehensive review of the RX100 I have found on the web - well done Jay
Thanks Jim 👍 :)
Bought it yesterday and it arrives today! To go next to my 80D.
Just used the panorama set up, thanks to this video ... brilliant even with a shaky hand ...
Awesome!!
I have a full frame A7 with the 24-135 G lens but don’t use it much as I also have the RX100 mk v. I’ve used the mark v for several years and got great results. I print my vacation pix to 11 X 14 coffee table books and the mark v does a great job. As I don’t like carrying the A7, lenses, tripod etc anymore but wanted the flexibility of a longer reach, I broke down and recently bought the RX100 vii and used it for the first time a few weeks ago for a trip to England and Wales. I also took the mk v with me but to be honest, I only used the vii and got great results. I flip between auto mode for quick shots and full manual when I have more time (ie my wife is busy shopping giving me more time to be creative or just to play around). I love my mk v but the vii was excellent. With 99% of my photography being just vacations now, I may sell off the full frame equipment and just keep both the v and vii with me. The mk v will still give me better results in low light conditions and as both cameras use the same batteries and charger (I carry 4 at a time), taking both is no problem. I do notice the higher quality sensor, autofocus and overall updated internal equipment in the vii give really nice results and great colours. This summer I will do some side by side shots with the two cameras to see if I can see a real difference in sharpness, colour, saturation etc. As a pure amateur it doesn’t really matter, I’ll be happy with both results but I already know the 24-200 equivalent flexibility has won me over, the slower lens hasn’t been an issue so far.
I really appreciate you sharing your experience Ricoman :) It's all about having fun and what works for you! These tiny RX100 cameras have crazy power and excellent image quality 100%...
@@JohnSanders42069 wow, a comment on an 8 month old post. Obviously an enthusiast to watch old videos and read old comments. You are right, and I do take photos when not on vacation, but not like when I was younger. I still prefer the lightweight high end point and shoot when hiking in the mountains or cross country skiing, family functions and that sort of thing. I’ve even used the RX100 at professional tennis events. I’m never going to get shots like a professional photographer would but that doesn’t matter to me. I also prefer the RX100 to the results from my iPhone.
Excellent review. I love your real world examples! I’ve owned every RX100 and I’m so impressed by the versatility of the VII. You’ve inspired me to do more with this model! Thanks.
Thank you very much :)
Perfect video, for my work with DSC-RX100M7, thank YOU very much!
Hi, thanks for sharing real-world samples. It gives me a much better understanding of the camera's picture quality and capabilities.
You are very welcome and thank you for the kind words ;)
Just got the Small Rig cage for the MK7 and it is great. Cold shoe mount on top and side allows for mic mounting. Iv'e owned three of the Rx100's....the III the V and now the VII. By far the 7 is the best of the bunch. Next camera will be the new Rx10 V....if or when it comes out!
Very nice stable of gear you have there and I can't wait to see what the RX10 V has to offer ;)
Ergh - your videos just cost me $1600 (AUD)! I had pretty much convinced myself that I DIDN'T need this camera, then I watched this and the beginners guide and I'm sold :-) Excellent reviews, amazing details on the functions and you explain things in such a clear way. Thank you.
Glad I could help you iron out your decisions Rebecca and thanks for the very nice comments ;)
Rebecca, do you regret? 😀 I have the M3 and just waiting for some reasons to upgrade... So be honest, please. I dont have to buy it, right?
I just picked up one of these cameras, and I like it a lot for its anak but powerful size. It's worth it in 2023 to me. Jason's in-depth reviews were the information I was looking for to be certain I wanted this camera.
Jay, I just received my Rx100 vii and found your review. I really enjoyed it and found it not too rushed, and liked how you gave some very practical uses of the camera. I look forward to viewing your other videos on this camera. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this video. You've got a new subscriber here! Thanks!
Thanks for the videos... I just purchased this from B&H and I was pretty hesitant spending this much on a point and shoot. I have full frame Nikon cameras. But they sit home too much. I wanted something to always have with me besides a cell phone. So far I haven't returned it! Seeing your photos on this video has me pretty motivated.
Beautiful work!
Awesome review. I've spent so many hours researching the last few months for a travel cam. I want high quality video and photos. I think this is exactly what I'm looking for.
Thank you for the comments and I hope the camera works out well for you and your endeavors ;)
Did you get one? And if yes, what are your thoughts?
@@rainer6367 ended up getting canon G5X II. 1.8 aperture, and built in ND filter were the biggest reasons for picking this over the sony. Been very happy with it.
@@rudydoyle Thank you and have a great sunday!
OMG this is so soo sooo detailed!
Thank you ;)
So pleased I found your channel. I certainly did get what I wanted. Excellent. 👍
Thanks you :)
Very detailed and even today 2021 I am thinking of getting one
The quality looks phenomenal! Then I decided to check the playback quality on RUclips. It was on auto 360p. Once I switched it to 1080p, I was sold.
one of the best and elaborate review video on youtube about sony rx100m7 📷 ❤️
love from India 🇮🇳 brother ❤️
Thank you for your informative videos! I just purchased my own Sony RX100 vii and I am very excited!
You are very welcome and thanks for the comments!
I love portability sony rx100vii..thanks for this video
Great video!
I am planning to purchase the VII once B and H has the stock replenished. It seems that Sony is still having the RX100 VII in production at one of their factories. Based on what I see around the internet, the RX100 series is still very popular and selling in large numbers. I do wish Sony would announce the RX100 VIII soon. Unfortunately, no news on that matter as of now.
Jason, your video is outstanding about SONY RX100 VII. As soon as I can I will by one.
SUPERB! thank you, excellent Jay - really looking forward to receiving mine now! Bonus for the accessories too...
Thanks for the review. I'm hoping to make this my portable pocket mirrorless at some point.
Thank you for the comments and I'm glad you liked the review :)
Jay: Excellent reviews, but I especially appreciated your various (and hopefully ongoing) reviews and tutorials on the Sony RX100 VII. In fact, your review provided all of the final answers to questions I've had regarding this camera and just made the purchase. BTW, keeping-in-mind that time is always an issue when providing videos, if you could slow-down just a little. You are presenting incredibly useful information at a near perfect presentation. Thank you, so much. Keep-up the great work! :-)
You can control the playback speed. I do it to slow down tech demos and to speed up opinions/narratives all the time.
Your video looks fantastic! Clarity, lighting, detail, color, and sound are all perfect.
Thank you very much! They are very far from perfect, but I greatly appreciate the sediment ;)
Some wildlife photography with birds in flight would be cool to see.
Very great and nice video.
Thanks you for the comments!! Unfortunately, I did not get lucky enough to capture that. 200mm is really not enough reach for birds in flight in most cases anyway honestly. Birds are small and to get that close is very difficult in the wild...
Got this camera. Paired it with Crane m2. It’s a great combo. Small and powerful.
Awesome combo!!
Again a super nice video and absolutely great description. I did not know that it could be that easy. Very dear thanks
Thank you very much Thomas :)
You are an awesome reviewer and have a great eye for photography definitely deserves more subscribers. Your hdr photos are killers. I’m tempted by the VII with the mic input but don’t want to part my V because I love the faster lens and low/natural light photography. Keep up the great work buddy. Btw I’ll purchase some of those accessories via your links to contribute whatever I can to your channel
Thank you very much for the kind words and support ;) I really appreciate it!
Did your temptation have won and do you have the M7 yet?
Thank you. Great effort. So detailed. Btw your kids are angels, congrats!
Thank you so much :)
Thanks for these in depth reviews and tutorials. I've had a 6D and a few modest lenses for 6 years and love it. I don't think it has any fault, but it is so hard to take with you when you are going to be out all day on foot. That strap really starts to dig into your neck. I have an iPhone 12 Pro which does well in good light and wide angle, but when you are out and about, it seems most of the shots need zoom. I finally started looking for a good compact zoom camera. I really wasn't planning on spending $1300 on one, but the Sony finally won me over. The image quality was really good through the whole zoom range, and the autofocus was very good, and fast, something I love about my 6D. The controls are small, and navigating the menu took some practice, even though the menu is pretty much like any DSLR menu. The view finder is great and the diopter adjustment works better than on my 6D. All and all, I think Sony's formula was to put a big quality sensor and a big quality lens on a compact and include all the other DSLR stuff they could. While it isn't the same as something like the 6D, it came much closer than I expected and I see this being my main camera from now on.
I totally agree with your assessment Robert and I'm glad you are liking the RX100 7 :)
Great review and tutorials, just in the market down trading from a big DSLR into a compact and finding your videos really helpful. Thinking to pull the trigger on rx100 vii..
So.. here we are a year later. Did you pull the trigger?
Here we are 4 years later... Did you pull the trigger on the vii?
A very nice presentation to compare the various moods of the RX100 M7 without the fuss, worth watching, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Very nice review and info. Thank you. I'm still enjoying this camera 3 years later and intend to have it as my primary point-and-shoot for the foreseeable future. (just subscribed)
Thank you for the kind words and sharing your experience!! Great to hear :)
Seriously great video. Loved how thoroughly you covered everything, and how many sample photos/videos you provided. Will definitely be watching your other videos. Thanks for your hard work.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for a super review of this technical little masterpiece, and for sharing some lovely pics and video footage.
The only downside is that I now really want this camera, but currently way outside my budget. So will have to wait a bit for a secondhand deal...
But thanks all the same 👍
Thanks for the very nice comments, and yeah it is very expensive for sure!
great video, I think I will spend the extra and get this model (was originally hooked on ZV-1)
Right on!
Many thanks for this review Jason. Very well done… 🎉
Thanks Dan and you are very welcome :)
Love it man lots of help. I am gonna buy this camera here soon.
Awesome! Thanks for the comments ;)
Thanks for the great review. I wish I could afford it. Meantime Canon g7x mark out is doing great.
Another great review, Jason! Thanks a lot for your time and effort. Great little camera.
My pleasure Dan and thank you for the very kind words :)
Great video. You have a new subscriber
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for your great review.
I just bought this camera. Love it!
Just want to remark that you can put on the grip AG-R2 and it still fits into the wonderful stylish leather case LCS-RXG. I can recommend them both for a better handling and protecting of the RX100 VII.
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for the review
You are very welcome and thank you for the comments!
Very informative. Lovely calm and articulate delivery. Excellent
Wow, thank you!
I just ordered mine today.
Thanks for this info just purchased this Sony vii very helpful info 📸
Glad it was helpful!
This is the exact review video about RX 100 VII that ive been looking for. Simple , clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great Review!
Long video review but i dont bored at all 👍👍
Just got this camera and I’m learning lots with your videos. I was wondering if you had any tutorials on the Sony 7r iii. Thank you !
Sony should have put a mic jack on its hx99 and made a budget alternative to this camera. I like this camera but went with an a6400 instead. I already had an HX90v so they pair well. I only shoot 1080 and record separate sound. If I could only have one camera ... the RX100 VII would probably be my choice.
Well that would certainly be nice, I agree ;) The larger sensor on the A6400 is far superior though, especially with a good lens mounted up!
Great review as always - really enjoy your reviews and training
Thanks Jon ;)
Those puppy photos are amazing
I found out the hard way that with the grip add-on to the front of the camera, the Sony camera case didn't fit, because I didn't see this video of Jason's first.
such a great review man
Thank you :)
Another great video from you, Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for sharing and the great effort.
Thank you for the very nice comments and you are very welcome :)
Hey Jay :) Thank you for the great review on the Sony DSC RX100 MK VII. I have the MK V (No "A"), and I can shoot rapid 20 Mega-Pixel stills @24fps until the buffer fills up. I was surprised to learn the MK VII actually has dropped the speed of rapid burst stills down to 20 fps (Still a very quick rate). Great to hear about the improvement to the 4K over heating issue. I have 98 % of those features, but really would like to have direct external Mic input. Also, that zoom is awesome.
Hi Mark, and yes it did drop in max fps speed to 20fps, but it's black-out free like the Sony A9, and the Autofocus tracking abilities are far superior. It does also have a burst shooting mode where it can do 90fps however, but no AF Tracking as far as I can tell. Eye-AF for humans and Animals, the Pop-up viewfinder has also been significantly improved, LCD Screen articulation has been increased and is now a "touchscreen", mic input which is awesome, different lens which is slower, but way more reach, Slog-3 and HLG Gamma profiles for advanced video users, longer 4k video record times and Active stabilization has been added to 4k video, Interval Shooting or Time-Lapse has been added to the camera since the apps are no longer an option like on your camera. However, the RX100 V is incredible as well, no question and probably not worth upgrading unless you really want some of those features. Basically it's still an ultra compact powerhouse that takes phenomenal photos at the end of the day ;) Good day Sir!!
great vid buddy ... amazing explanation!!!
cheers
Thank you! Cheers!
Yet another awesome video!!!
Thank you :)
Fantastic review, thanks 🙂
Great video. I almost ordered this camera but 4k@30fps is still a dealbreaker, it's painful to watch
That review was awesome, watched every minute of it pre my Sony RX100 VII coming next week, I have subscribed and will be catching up with your other videos. C ;-) Byeee
Thanks for the sub and the very kind words Cris ;)
Great real world review. I love this camera! Will sell my m5.
Thank you for the comments and you can't go wrong with the RX100 VII ;)
Precious kids 😍 Gid bless.
Great video.
Thank you so much :)
Great review format, keep it up!
Thank you for the comments and feedback Ivo ;)
Another great review.
Thank you :)
Thanks Jay for the awesome video 👍 One question , you didn't mention the a ND filter. Do you use one for outdoor bright sunlight conditions?
You are fantastic, GOD Bless YOU!!! Thank you very much for this Video!!! : )
Thank you :)
Thanks, great video. Wondering if Sony is working on version VIII.
I have not heard anything about a new RX100 series camera, but Sony doesn't tend to let us know these things until it's officially announced. I would think and new RX10 series camera would come first, but it's really hard to even guess with the chip shortages and all...
Great review. I had the v and loved it but went over to my beloved x100 for photos
TBH I may generate income to save up for this wonderful camera to do video vlogs about the Fuji!
Great work..

Awesome, thank you!
Perfect review although the camera is of 2019. It is still perfect for hiking!
I totally agree! For hiking there is not much better for compactness, versatility, powerful features, and image/ video quality.

amazing review on this camera, fantastic footage and clarity, thanks for all the info. #chefstravels
Hallo, what about zv1 ? I am confused between these two camera with lots of similarities but with a very different price 😆
The ZV1 is a way more basic version of the RX100 series cameras... It has no electronic viewfinder for example and more pro oriented features...
Thanks for the great info! Liked.
I NEED this camera
Don't we all Brett? lol Thanks for the comments!
Jay SonyAlphaLab just had a look at the Harvey Norman website... 2grand!!😮😮😮😮 naaaaa... I'll think I will just stick to my Panasonic TZ80 for the time being

Great information! Is there a silent mode on this camera? Can you turn the screen off and just use the viewfinder? I do a lot street/travel photography where I want to be noticed as little as possible.
Yes, you can turns the audio signals off, and set the camera to use just the viewfinder. There is no dedicated silent mode though like some of the larger cameras.
Hi sir,can make one video on Panasonic Lx10 camera like photography & 4k videos please
How do you solve the problem lacking of ND filter?
Lens filter kit solutions like this: amzn.to/2swkXer
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks
another solution (better - lighter and more secure) is Lensmate.
The zoom didn't seem to make any noise. Is it really that quiet? Low light quality is amazing on my RX100 Mark IV. Love it!
It does make a little noise that you can hear when there is no background noise.
What do you think about this camera being used in a woodshop - instructional type videos, with decent dust collection keeping the camera from being completely covered in dust!
It would certainly work, but I would be nervous about all that dust. Do you plan on using a microphone or just the cameras built in Mic?
@@Jason_Hermann I was planning on using a shotgun and a lav mic. So the dust is a risk - I thought since it was mirrorless it would be less of an issue 🤦♂️
@@Jason_Hermann sorry Jay, I forgot I had messaged about the RX100. I thought I was asking about the a6500, when I responded a few minutes ago saying it was mirrorless
Thanks for the content. Is it acceptable to compare between Iphone and Sony RX100 mark 7 camera specs ? I am planning to get a camera (I don’t have any at present) to capture fall colors and also for our vacation. I’m in a confused state to pick between Iphone 13 pro and Sony RX100 mark 7 ?
how is the image "The silky water effect" at video stop 6:25 possible?
That photo was an HDR photo which is multiple exposures combined in post processing. More on HDR Photography Here: www.sonyalphalab.com/sony-cameras-and-hdr-photography-tutorial/ The smooth water was achieved by slowing the shutter down to about 1/15th of a second or so. It was fairly dark out, so this was pretty easy to do. In bright conditions you would need a ND filter to help slow the shutter down. Be sure to check out my Camera Modes tutorial which will explain the shutter speed concepts in more detail here: www.sonyalphalab.com/sony-rx100-vii-tutorial-camera-modes-explained/
Hi Jason. Great review! I want to buy a camera for taking photos of my kid and for street photography. Do you recommend this camera? Or, should i buy a interchangeable lens micro 4/3 camera such as Lumix DC-Gx9? Your recommendation is important for me. Thanks in advance.
Well for kids I would recommend really good auto focus. If you were to get an interchangeable lens camera with good AF, it would not be the GX9 based on what I have seen. Perhaps look at the Sony ZV-E10: geni.us/ObFCBGY The RX100 VII is also a great option, but ultra compact, so it's not the best ergonomically if that matters to you. Plus the sensor is significantly smaller than the M43 or APS-C... Interchangeable lens cameras give you a lot of options for fast aperture lenses also, which you cannot get with the RX100 VII, which can help in low light situations and background blur/ separation... I Hope that helps, Jay
Thanks
The cover of the usb port seems very fragile, same with the other 2 ports. I use a aftermarket charger instead of connecting the camera to the charger.
Hy, i am in search for a Camera to take pictures and videos and slowmotion of myself riding my supermoto on Track , or to take pictures and so on of some motorsports Events i Visit during the year , would you recommend the RX100VII or the Sony A6400 with its 18-135 Kit lens to start with?? I would Love to Go with the RX100M7 cause its lightweight and small but i dont know If the lens is Good enough with its Smaller sensor for fast Moving objects?? Pls Help want to make myself a nice Christmas present 😂
Hello, have you considered the RX10 IV? bhpho.to/2MLu2bh The RX100 VII will do the job, but it's a really small camera and does not offer the flexibility of alternative lenses. The RX10 IV would be a better option for an all in one camera and extended recording I would say, but it's much larger than the RX100 VII. The Advantage to the RX10 IV is the 24-600mm effective zoom range which would really do wonders for you at the track! My RX10 IV review is here if you want to check it out: www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-rx10-iv-review-real-world-perspective-lots-of-testing-and-tutorial-videos/
Alternative if you want the most flexibility, the A6400 offers the ability to use any of the E-Mount lenses as you can see in my guide here: www.sonyalphalab.com/guides/sony-e-mount-lens-guide/
Does that help? Jay
