    I love the RX100 VII, but it's amazing to think it came out five years ago and they seem to have forgotten about both it and the RX10 series. It's also hard to get hold of new in some regions including the UK. But yes I agree, when my back started hurting - actually it was my knees in my case - I downsized to the RX100 VII and made a video all about travelling light. I ended up trading the zoom for the fixed lens and bigger sensor of the X100V for my travels, but I'm very happy with either.

    I bought the RX100V second hand with its great 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens and 1st in the range to have phase detect autofocus with subject tracking. It also has an active ND filter. The RX100 models after went to a greater range on the lens of 24-200mm at F2.5-4.5 which seemed a bit of a compromise for low light situations.

However, I did just weigh my camera backpack with the Canon 6D, 80D, Tramron 24-70, and 70-200 f2.8 lenses and a few other things in there. Around 17 libs. May explain why it gets left home a lot. I wish companies would make these again. I buy cheap $200 phones, never the $1k+ flagships that finally have serviceable image quality, so I need a real dedicated compact camera.
    I love these because I get to leave the stresses of my phone behind and not my photography. No distractions.
    Plus:
    🔹Lossless quality optical zoom 🔎
    🔹Flip screen so you can see yourself and use the best lens at the same time ✌️
    🔹Built-in ND for video exposure 😎
    🔹A nice big 1" sensor for great pocketable IQ and DR. ✨
    🔹Dedicated ergonomics built for purpose and custom modes to ensure fast tactile operation which at times can be set while powered down ⚡
    🔹It doesn't waste my phone battery or storage while shooting 🔋
    🔹It doesn't need to be updated every year for another $1k because they killed the battery life and RAM with updates. 💵
    🔹It looks touristy so I'm less likely to creep people out taking photos of them on a compact than with my phone. 😊
    I checked out the Xiaomi 14 1" sensor with the shutter button module, but it costs more than my GRIII for way less camera. Personally, I'd rather spend more to get more camera, and watch RUclips on a cheapo Samsung.

      I wish they would update it to a bigger sensor, perhaps APS-C, but keep it small and inconspicuous. The so-called 1" sensor is very small. Sensors marketed as "1-inch" measure only 0.52″ X 0.35″. For non-Americans, that is 13.2 x 8.8mm :) The image area (116 mm2) is about 3 times smaller than the APS-C

    And just got back from Disneyland Paris and it totally worth its money. You kinda don't want to take a bigger camera in such a crowded environement , where extension sticks/monopds are forbidden. So as a holiday trip camera paired with a carbon monopod as shooting "handle" and a couple Gopros or any other action cam you are pretty much covered.

    Its a great camera ive owned the mark 1 version for years. It has one major flaw and that is if you get dust on the sensor like i did then it is crazy difficult to clean the sensor and it has to go back to Sony. Sensor dust can happen in a flash even if you are careful. Next camera for me Panasonic G100 m 4/3 where you can access the sensor easily.

    • @StraitKnopfler
      @StraitKnopfler 4 месяца назад

      Yes this is definitely a big issue. I have a similar camera (TZ200) and I don't know how hard it is to clean the sensor but I modified it by putting on a filter adapter, so now it has a UV filter and a lens cap. It makes it more bulky and fiddly to carry and use but gives me a more peace of mind that it's protected from dust and will last a few extra years. These are great cameras but I don't like the way the lens opens. I'd really recommend adding a filter adapter.

    • @Mr-S.C.
      @Mr-S.C. 4 месяца назад

      @@StraitKnopfler It's very difficult to clean as I had a TZ10 and that had sensor dust issues. I had to bin it in the end because it was impossible to work with a blob on the image. Nothing else wrong the camera just the blob. Nothing i did got rid of it as well. Don't forget dust can enter from the sides on the barrel lens as well as it folds away dust gets blown into the camera. The lens cap will help but the barrel is the real issue here. Keep it clean and dust free if you can.

During my trips, my backpack was heavy because it was packed with many travel related stuffs other than the cameras. In many occasions, I was so lazy to take my APSC or FF camera out from my backpack that I just shoot the scene using the RX100.
    The image quality of the photos from the RX100 was good enough, although still noticeably not as good as the APSC or FF cameras if compared side by side. In my recent trips, the numbers of photos that I took by the RX100 were more that the photos taken by the APSC or FF cameras.

    My RX100V (consciously chosen over VII for the focal length and used price) is showing its age but comes in clutch when I do not want to bring out my main A7 body for casual photos. Smaller body means I can also switch to a smaller/lighter bag.

    Nice camera, but I doubt camera choices make that much of a difference. Exercise, do some mobility work, lift relatively heavy weights 2-3x a week and stretch…the latter I often leave out and that’s when my back gets sore. I’m approaching 70. Still, a nice camera! I like mine, but would be very tempted by the older V as well…faster lens, but less zoom.

    Thank you for the great video, Jason. From one old guy to another, is there another compact zoom camera that you'd recommend might have more zoom than 200mm but does not have aperture degradation and still compact enough to get through security? I like to bring these cameras to basketball or football games where security will not allow "professional" cameras. I use to use an Olympus Stylus 1 which had a good balance of size, zoom (28-300), and fixed aperture 2.8. Are there other cameras I should consider other than Sony RX100 vii?

    I personally use a Sony RX100 VII. In terms of portability, I admit that the RX100 VII does not perform well in low light conditions, such as indoors, compared to full frame cameras (I compare it to my other Sony A7C II). I think the reason Sony has not yet produced a new model may be because Sony prefers to produce things that make more money and are more appealing to the general public, such as selling new lenses that make more money.

    Hum... I'm curious. How does the RX100 compares with Panasonic and Canon 1" competitor cameras? Is the quality really better? Significantly so?

    • @chennyye28
      @chennyye28 7 месяцев назад

      at least for Lumix, the video autofocus shall be much better, as Panasonic didn't use PDAF for a long time.

    • @okaro6595

      Canon uses older versions of the sensors. The current ones use the same as RX100 Mark IV. Canon does have faster lenses but they go to only 100 mm and 120 mm. Sony does have the VA model which is faster but goes only up to 70 mm. Sony has high frame rate video modes that Canon does not have and fast electronic shutters. So if you are interested in fast action stuff, then Sony is the way to go. To normal photography Canon may be better.
      Panasonic has two models, one is f/1.4 at the wide angle but slows fast when zoomed and it is old. Another is a super zoom up to 360 mm but again much slower

    With modern "AI" noise reduction software, these pocket cams (especially the 1" cams) go way further than they did when released 5-15 yrs ago. It's not even that crazy to shoot good 1/1.7 chips now that ISO 1600 is actually salvageable in LR.
