      Yeah, I just bought a RX100 VA for less than 600€, a lot cheaper than the newer models, and zero downsides for what I do (faster lens, ND filter, I do not care about not having 200mm).

    Best RX100V real-world review I've ever watched. Being as an V owner myself, I still feel the need to learn how to take full advantage of it. Nonetheless, the RX100 series is the last defense of portable point-and-shoot against high-end smartphone cameras. I hope Sony keep it up with the Mark Vii.

    Thanks for your excellent review. You mentioned the zoom limitation on the Mark V. I’ve heard from multiple reviewers that Sony’s “clear image zoom” allows near 100mm zoom on this camera with very little image quality degradation. I cannot verify yet as my Mark VA is being shipped right now. Side note: The Mark VA might go down as the GOAT among RX100’s since it keeps the fast 1.8-2.8 lens but adds the Mark VI’s processing, software and image quality tweaks. No touch screen or fully tilting display, but maybe the best feature suite overall. Got mine from Tri-State Camera for “only” $718. Cant wait to try it out. Thanks again. Cheers!

      Vaughan Branch Hi,
      Thank you. In my opinion clear image zoom looks bad at full zoom. It is just digital zoom with some software processing going on to smooth things out. I use it but only when I am more concerned with capturing something interesting than getting good image quality. I’m glad it’s there because it’s better than nothing.
      Yes if I was buying one now I think I’d choose the VA. The 1.8 gives significant low light improvement and shallow DOF. The ND filter is essential for my outdoor video work too. I think you chose well, my friend. I think you will really love it. I still love my V.

    Excellent view, Roo! And very well produced. I started my channel a year ago with only a RX100V. A magnificent little tool! I have since added the A6500 with a couple lenses, but my RX has become my second camera on the shoot. The canned profiles are better than the A6500.

    Nice vid. I’ve only had my V for a few months but agree with everything you say about it. The menu system is atrocious, it’s fiddly in my big hands, has limited zoom and not much macro capability (especially compared to my G15 that it replaced as my point and shoot) but then you flip on the video and all is forgiven. Those frame rates are amazing, even better on a small gimbal, the image holds its own alongside my XA-30, 5D4 and 80D, and it gets you b-roll shots that nothing else can do at this price point. Just an incredible piece of kit. Love it.

    Your review is the most honest and synoptical I have seen, I also totally agree with You, that size and portability is such an amazing advantage of this fantastic camera! I have the RX100 M1 and was ready to buy the M3, but after realising that the HFR mode will give me a lot more creativity options, I decided to pay a more and get the M5. Honestly I am a little disappointed about the M6. Instead of 24-200 a 24-120 with F1.4-3,2 would have been a much better choice. That's just my opinion because RX always stood for very bright lens in a small Camera. Best whishes!

    I have the RX100M1 and it's a brilliant thing. I'm definitely going to invest in the M6 as it's a huge step up - maybe not so for the M5, but from the original it definitely looks to be worth it. My father was so impressed with the M1's quality but for him zoom is a big deal and it was the 3.6x limitation that put him off. For me this looks like an ideal compact to keep around when I don't want something bulky, and I bet those are the sort of people it'll sell to. This also looks like it'll be a great video companion to the Panasonic GH5 if you don't want to buy multiples of them, but maybe just for the B-roll.

    great review :) now with the RX100 VA out they changed the menu (so it's like on the VI) and the processor, but still kept it to be non-touchscreen, 24-70 f/1.8 and ND filters .. not having any RX100 yet, i think i will opt for the VA instead of the VI, mostly for the faster lens, but i'm not fully certain yet

  • @lamontgilliland9664
    @lamontgilliland9664 6 лет назад +2

    Nicely done... and whole hearted agree. Waited for months for the VI to be announced and just this week decided to go with the V. The extra reach of the VI was not worth forfeiting the f1.8. 24-70mm is a very practical range while keeping the lens bright and sharp. Otherwise, the only real addition was the touch screen on the VI -- which is not a plus for me. Add the premium cost of the VI and the V is a bargain.

      Haha yeah she's a crazy fluff ball. I have been so impressed with the Rx100V for video work that I'm starting to wonder if I should switch from the Canon mirrorless cameras to the A6300. I know video is excellent but how do you find it for stills?

    • @LinaForrestal

      Oh I actually predominantly only use my A6300 for still photography! The images are gorgeous, sharp, excellent in low light (photography on my blog if you wanted to take a look anythingbutsalad.com/). It's a powerful little camera, especially when you pair it with your fav lenses! I don't know much about the Canon mirrorless! We shoot video for my YT channel on the GH5. Totally the other direction - lol (because my husband is a Panasonic loyalist). But for video I also know that the sony a7riii is a monster.

    As a Wedding Pro, I have ALWAYS wanted more than my DSLR + 24-70 f2.8 zoom lens -- especially at the longer end. That said, I have that lens on the the camera for 80% of the Wedding. To have that in a pocket camera, would be awesome, but that 70mm zoom will never get any longer. I've heard that the lens quality has dropped with the Mark 6, so I'm in a quandary as well. Still thinking.

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah it's a tricky one when they add great features but take others away and make sacrifices. The extra zoom would be fantastic but if the rumours of the new lens being less sharp are true, that's not good news. Let's hope the final retail version will be fine. Time will tell.

      Atelier Digital anciennement Linstit - I’m with you. With these little sensors the more light we can get onto the sensor the better. That new F/2.8 lens will struggle in low light more than the RX100V. The zoom is amazing though. Some people will be willing to trade less light for extended reach. It’s nice to have options.

      Young360 I think it comes down to whether or not you need the longer zoom of the 6 or the faster (brighter) lens of the 5. I need faster and I also value the ND filter on the 5 too much to let it go. It’s so useful to me.

      They said they can't put internal ND filter on such a long zoom range, which sucks, as well as losing stop or so of light. On the other hand it does give an impressive and still sharp range. I guess its best to keep with Mark V for those that need those features. Its still made and less expensive.

    I bought a HX90v after I saw the price of the RX100. Since most of my video is seen only on smartphones or laptops, the camera is perfectly adequate for what I do. I bought mine used for $250usd ...instead of in the $1000 dollar range. I just can't complain about the 1080p video quality this camera can produce. There is a new model, the HX99 ... I probably wouldn't upgrade, because I don't shoot 4k. But if I was buying a new camera in this category .. no RX100 for me.

  • @WilliamParmley
    @WilliamParmley 6 лет назад +2

    If I had a Mk v I doubt I'd upgrade. But I have a Mk ii and I think I'll go for the Mk vi. I'll still have the f/1.8 on the Mk ii if I need it. I really want the better AF and the pop-up viewfinder, and the 200 mm zoom is more important for my typical uses than is the faster lens on the Mk v. Enjoyed the video, BTW.

    Excellent video! I have been looking for the perfect camera for about a month now and somehow I came across the rx100 series and I am intrigued. I am not a professional by any stretch and will only be taking casual photos. I mainly love to take photos nature in my backyard and family. So since I do not have experience with any of the Rx100's could you make a suggestion. The zoom of the vi appeals to me since I would like to take pictures of the many birds in my yard. My Iphone 6 just could not capture a bald eagle flying across the lake across from my house. And I can't seem to tear myself away from the Rx100 series. I have looked at the Sony HX80, Nikon B700, and a lumix of some sort but I keep coming back to the Rx100 series. I did not really want to spend $1200. But I dont wantto be dissapointed and have to purchase another camera. Any advice would be helpful. Also I have only seen that eagle once in 6 months. I keep leaning towards the M3. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  6 лет назад

      Michele Gateley Hi, it sounds like your main use would be for photographing nature, wildlife and family. You didn’t mention video or slow motion so I will assume it’s mainly stills you’re interested in. The RX100iii is a great compact camera and can be found at bargain prices. But like all the RX100s apart from the new VI, the zoom is very limited. So wildlife will be hard to capture. The VI would work really well for birds. If you don’t mind a larger body, the RX10iii is excellent for wildlife. It’s basically a RX100IV in a larger body with a huge zoom range. Then there’s the Panasonic Lumix ZS200. It has a huge zoom range (24-360mm eqv.), but the lens is not as sharp as the Sony. It’s cheaper though and still a very nice compact camera.

      Roo's Views hi - I went for the V rather than the six. Will be posting a video about why I did that, but, basically, I wanted the ND filter and the wider aperture. Hi great review and fantastic dog. I’m extremely amateur and I basically only take pics of my dogs running around with my origional mk1 rx100. The problem I have is the autofocus often randomly focuses on anything other than the dog, I’m thinking the mk6 with touch screen I can tell it to focus on the dog the af tracking will keep it there. I’m thinking the mk5 will have the same issue as the mk 1. I miss so many great shots because it’s focused on a piece of grass instead of the dog. Do you feel it’s worth the extra for me for the mk6?

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  5 лет назад

      P J Hi, The V has tracking focus too. Mine is set so I can press the centre button to lock onto an object, then it will track that object wherever it goes and maintain focus. A touch screen is not necessary for that.
      If the touch screen on the VI was more useful I would recommend it for that but it’s so incredibly limited. What really makes the VI a worthwhile upgrade for many is the 200mm zoom lens. For me though, I can’t live with the ND filter being missing on the VI.

    I bought a M4 used for really cheap. The M5 has larger buffer and better auto focus, therefore I don't feel missed out. I use it for stills as I got a Blackmagic for video.

    you also forgot to mention the lack of the 3-stop ND filter on the VI. For my use, having the slower lens + no built in ND filter just doesn't compensate for the additional reach =\. For a non- photographer/videographer though the extra zoom is probably worth it though

    • @Roos-Reviews

      WushuSinned I agree. The ND filter is so useful on my V that I don’t think I could do without it now.

    I would go the M5, and if you need zoom or mic inputs, get the RX10 M4. Though I would like to see an M5 come out with 4K/60p. I hope they don’t compromise speed for convenience though.

    The target audience of rx100 and g7x alike dont need the high burst photo frame rates nor the extended lens range. Mark6 is a failure, so here’s what im waiting for the mark7: better battery, better stabilization, reliable af, longer 4k record time, 4k/60fps, f/1.4 lens and a mic jack for vlogging. Smartphones are catching up fast with their sophisticated AI software, soon these point and shoots will see their demise if these camera manufacturers dont innovate.

    Nice review and very mellow to watch. Well done. I just rented a RX 100 vi to take to a indoor concert venue where they always make me check my Nikon D750. So I wanted to see what I could do with something that fits in my pocket. The video result was pretty amazing. The other images were not bad but are grainy in low light and nothing like a full frame DSLR with an F2.8 lens. So - is the mark 5 going to be better in my indoor concert venues? Better bokeh and lower resulting ISO with less grain? Can anyone tell me what they have found?

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  6 лет назад

      Chris The F1.8 lens on the V versus the 2.8 on the VI makes quite a big difference in low light. These little 1” sensors, amazing as they are, do struggle in low light, so the the wider the aperture, the better. But the great thing about the VI is the 200mm focal length which would be useful at concerts if you aren’t close enough to the stage. It’s a tough choice.

    I am considering buying the mark 3. Could you tell me your thoughts on the video and image quality on that one? I know it does not have 4k video but I heard that the 4k function on the mark IV and mark V causes the camera to overheat. I'm also not sure I could play 4k footage on my computer?

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  6 лет назад

      Megan Brennan The mark 3 is still a great camera and is now much more affordable. 4k on the later models is not useful to me because the camera overheats after a few minutes and before long it powers off. By the time I have everything set up and have done a couple of test shots, it overheats. So for me the 4K feels like a gimmick. The iii doesn’t have high frame rates for slow motion and its buffer is smaller. However, if I hadn’t needed the high frame rates (120fps and higher) I would have been very happy with the iii. It takes great video at 1080p 60p and the lens is sharp and fast.

    I'm still comparing the RX100V (and newer VA) & RX100VI. One thing that I've heard is that Sony "store" doesn't work anymore for any Sony cameras and getting the Time Lapse app is pretty much impossible with a newly purchased camera. It doesn't appear there's any software/firmware based time lapse option possible anymore and that would require an external intervalometer. Is this the case? Seems so silly of Sony to take away such a feature from a small camera and require an external unit nearly the same size of the camera for this basic function. Kinda bummed I didn't get a 5 with this feature earlier. Any advice or some option I'm missing?

    • @Roos-Reviews
      @Roos-Reviews  5 лет назад +1

      Eric Mitchell Yeah that’s the case currently. When I bought my RX100V it still had the app store feature but despite many attempts, I couldn’t get the time lapse app because the Playmemories store had a bug in its payment system and on the website. PlayMemories feels very much like an old, unsupported, abandoned service.

      suzie Killick Those would be huge prints. The files taken on the RX100’s 1” sensor just won’t look good blown up to that size unless you’re standing quite some distance away. Prints that large are the domain of higher resolution sensors as found in the Sony A7Rii, Nikon Z7 or medium format cameras.

    can we put only the RX 100 VI lens part to the RX 100 V body.. if we could do this then we could achieve something great camera. since the both RX 100 V and VI bodies are exactly same in size, looks and likely to be exchanged the parts of their bodies in one to another. if this is possible then we can get both camera in second hand then make legendary camera out of these two bodies in one.. :D
