I know there are APS-C sensors that are bigger, but I cannot shake my love of Olympus images - their color science, the fun of the camera bodies, the size and portability.
Having both I take APS-C DSLR with various lenses when I care about output and EPL-6 with 14-42mm, 50-150mm and 9mm fish when I want to have small light bag, but still have OK output :) Next step is Olympus Stylus1 or XZ-2 for daily carry.
It's kinda telling that after all these new releases coming out, Jordan still shoots with the GH5. If he can do this with a MFT camera that's released in 2017, what excuses do I have :(
To be fair, it is still an absolutely cracking camera, with just one flaw holding it back and that is Panasonic's insistence on DFD CDAF. Otherwise I'd have bought it by now.
@@iNerdier That part is true, but there is a certain ease that comes with using better tools, and these guys do so much work with their camera that they have to choose something that definitely *will* suit their workflow. So the fact that they chose the GH5 and have stuck to it for 2 years in spite of all the upheaval in the camera market shows how good it is as a tool for fast, professional results.
How is this a signal that MFT is still alive? They literally re-released the E-M1 II in a smaller body. If anything, this camera displays how little Olympus is willing to invest in R&D which confirms that MFT is on the way out.
@@youknowwho9247 It's a trickle-down product, so it is kind of expected. The XT30 is derived from the XT3, the G95 from the G9, etc. The fact that there is still top-down product development is a sign of life. The M43 system might not be in its best state, but it is still alive. Sony's release of the IMX492 sensor is also another sign of life, as there is still sensor development for this system.
@@IvanRiveraStagea To me it looks like Olympus is trying to extract money from the parts of their fan base who still haven't realized that MFT is overpriced and doesn't have a future. But hey, to each their own. If someone wants to pay 1200 bucks for a plastic camera that produces low res, high noise images when they could get an X-T3, a6400 or M6 II for the same money - sure.
@@youknowwho9247 While the three cameras you mentioned are excellent, great IBIS is a large selling point for M43 if the shooting situation allows for lower shutter speeds. I maintain both full frame and M43 systems because of this. I think most m43 owners entered this ecosystem knowing its limitations (at least I'd like to think so).
@@IvanRiveraStagea Fair enough. Although I see little reason not to just use a tripod. Produces sharper images than any IBIS and is called for in most static scenes anyway. I can see two situations in which I'd want great IBIS - dragging the shutter to show movement and static scenes in places where tripods aren't allowed. Then again, from what I've heard the IBIS in Nikon's Z cameras is good for 4-5 stops as well.
I’m a longterm olympus user and was like you hoping for something special seeing as we’ve waited so long, I think we should have had this camera a couple of years ago as all the tech is handed down from the E-M1 MK2, I also agree that you can buy from Amazon an E-M1 MK2 for the same money and yes its bigger and heavier and if you watch reviews from Olympus visionary’s that’s all they bang on about, I’m also glad you found it plasticky and would trade the 55grams for a metal body as i thought i was on my own with that opinion and have mentioned on other reviews had it had a full metal body my order would have been in on the release day but now I will have to wait and see what happens with the new E-M1 MK3 and hope to god that they don’t downgrade the body on that. Nice video I love the humour, keep up the good work.
Wouldn't expect much from an E-M1 III. The past few months have price that Olympus isn't investing into R&D for their cameras anymore because they know MFT is dead.
This is the 1st Olympus camera I've found attractive in years. I value compactness, low weight and am willing to forgo w a few features from the full sized models. It's 160g lighter than EM1ii, 240g vs G9. This model is a win for me.
It's a brilliant little camera, I'm waiting for a good second hand deal to upgrade my em5ii. Speaking of weight my m2 with a small but all metal lens (I have the zhongyi 25mm on it now) feels quite dense for the size, I'd love to see it in a shop and compare.
@@jwickerszh mark iii is 80g less than mark ii. Should be noticeably lighter. Also it depends on the weight distribution. GX85 is abt the same weight, but feels heavy bc the weight is very concentrated in the middle where the IBIS is.
I am impressed by this camera because it ticks so many boxes. But yes it hasn't got anything new, that is a shame. What I like about it is that it takes us back to the roots of M43, to a compact camera that is powerful.
This camera does not have great technological advances and in fact, it comes a couple of years late, but it brings together a series of features that other brands have forgotten to implement or have done so halfway. Canon: 24p, variable display (M6MII), viewfinder (separate, really?) 4k with full sensor and autofocus, IBIS, sealed. Sony: Variable and fully touch screen, IBIS (6400 does not have), price (6600 is more expensive), sealed Fuji: Variable screen, IBIS, up to 29 min of recording (XT30 is limited to 15 in 1080 and 10 in 4K), sealed (XT30 is not). On paper it is the most balanced camera on the market, it would be necessary to see what the reviews are like and if people lose the fovia to small sensors. I would buy it
This camera costs as much as the X-T3, not X-T30. And you've conveniently forgot to mention that all the competitors you listed have one stop better subject isolation and noise performance, significantly better dynamic range, in some cases substantially higher resolution and offer much better autofocus.
The key word is balance my friend, and yes, certainly these sensors suffer from some more noise but nothing that with a good photographic technique can not be compensated; We will have to wait for the tests to see how it behaves. If M4 / 3 were so bad there wouldn't be so many happy people
Great review. I shoot on a GH5 (amongst others) but recommended an EM5ii last year to a beginner because I knew it would suit their food photography needs. I feel though in this modern market that Olympus and Panasonic have to be more realistic about their pricing and actually need faster product rollout cycles. I was looking forward to seeing this camera but after 4 years there's no way I could recommend it now in relation to the competition. I hate that they've made it cheaper feeling too.
I do wish the price was a bit more competitive, but theres nothing that competes with it that (regardless of sensor size) is as compact, has IBIS, a flip out screen, and has phase detect AF. Maybe the EOS m50 or 90D? Wait...no IBIS on those. The real question is: $1000 secondhand EM1-Mk ii or brand new $1200 EM5-Mk iii ?
Good point. I have a GX9 and I like it a lot. You can tell that Pana focused on keeping the cost down (the EVF come to mind), but at least that camera can be had for around 600-700 bucks.
@@tobiasmoeckel Exactly. I think the EM5M3 is worth around £600gbp which is about $650US. It should have been called the EM10 Mark 4 as well. There is absolutely no way I'd pay $1200US for a plastic camera with 12 year old USB technology.
Totally agree. The weight saving must be minimal using plastic instead of part metal. The em 10 all plastic mark 3 although a little bigger was heavier than the mark 2 which had a small amount of metal.
As always a well balanced review. Thank you for that. I suppose like many of the manufacturers they have to make distinctions between models. Overall there is enough here to attract EM-5 MKII owners to consider upgrading. I have the EM-1 MKII and am replacing my PEN-F with the EM-5 MKIII as my “Everyday carry everywhere “ camera. This will give me at least 90% of the M1 MKII features in that ultra lightweight small form factor. I could put this camera and my 5 primes into a very small shoulder bag and not notice any weight or bulk at all!
This camera and the EM1 mark II make Olympus very attractive for a mix of photo and solo video work like I do. Right now I use two M50 bodies and a M5, so Olympus stabilization plus solid 4k would be very appealing. It's too bad they didn't go with the battery in the EM1 mark II. The M5 mark III's initial price does feel a bit much but that's usually how camera companies do things. Another negative right now is that the 12-100mm is their only general zoom with IS that gives the extra stabilization. I really wish they make something at 9 or 10mm with IS that is compact (either a shorter zoom or primes).
Glad you mentioned about the plastic body. Robin Wong was making out it was an upgrade and was extremely offended when I said it was a shame it is made of a cheap material.
I encourage viewers to head over to London Camera Exchange to watch their review of this camera. They put this camera to a more comprehensive test and thorough review geared greater toward adventure minded people like myself, which to me, is who this camera is for. Just go look at what they did with this camera in a pitch dark cave with head lamps. Their stills are more pleasing too, unless you like autumn leaves. But they do lack the dad jokes and Jordan's always exquisite video based commentary to be fair.
Ummm, that's not a review. That's a promotional spot. So in other words if you don't want to see any of the cameras weaknesses, deficiencies, or compromises - go check out London Camera Exchange for their promo.
@@lakejindsay More like real world camera test, that's what they are doing, putting camera in many situation and see how it performs. Its not like canon fanboy channel, where they are going to review camera and not going to talk about dead weight and ugly looking camera.
This camera does feel like a step-down from its predecessors in some more weird ways aside from the obvious plasticiness (yes I just made up that word). No more flash-sync port, loss of customizable buttons around shutter/front dial, and the new grip (ECG-5) is no longer compatible with HLD-6P, nor does the grip feature the headphone jack seen on HLD-8G for E-M5 II. It seems Olympus wants to make the 5 line into a smooth transition between the 1 and 10 lines. This does streamline the overall product catalog, but omitted some quirky (and welcomed) characteristics that makes the 5 line unique.
funghiman Now isn’t the time to be cost cutting and harshly segmenting a product line downward. It’s a free-for-all in the MILC marketplace. Either out-innovate, or play dead like Canon and get mauled.
I wish it wasn't so plasticky, but I still have every intention of buying it. An Olympus with a 20mp sensor in a smaller body is exactly what I want. I just wish the EM10 had the new sensor.
You guys are a bit harsh on this camera. I think it's a nice offering because all of the other brands leave out or mess up some feature and ask you to compromise, while this has a side flippy screen, phase detect AF, uncropped 4K, IBIS, a small size, weather sealing, and a wide range of quality lenses! For the enthusiast the only missing "feature" (which by far isn't standard in competitors), is a headphone jack. This camera seems to tick more boxes than others in it's class.
thanks for the footage, i have zeroed-in on this camera due to IBIS, had bought sony a6400 but it was so so so bad that had to sold that...which lens would you recommend for this one..i am a travel vlogger, so sometime we speak to camera while walking, mostly try to capture cinematic scenes and low light performance will be also helpful, any recommendation?? Thanks in advance
The 5MkIII is... well, an E-M1 MkII in a smaller body. I use an E-M5 MkII, and the MkIII does add some things I wanted improved (C-AF sucks on the MkII, especially in video)... but as far as what went into the MkIII... it could have come out a year or two ago.
in the past I have had an Olympus PEN EE half frame, an OM10 and OM1 film cameras but not really attracted to the current lines. Would buy a full frame with a more solid build if they did one. (I think that your outfit is very stylish Chris)
I think that you underestimated the camera and isn't an E-M1 mk III supposed to come out early next year. Phase detect, solid IBIS, light body, weather sealing, flippy screen, a zillion available lenses, high res. Drop the price by a few hundred and it looks pretty good. even with its compromises. Panasonic video is terrific except everybody whines about the autofocus when the subject starts moving around unexpectedly. My guess is that least one guy in Toronto is really going to like the E-M5iii.
I remember back when I was weighing the pros and cons between an E-M1 and E-M5ii, going over the features and trying to figure out which was better for me. I eventually went with the M1 but I still think the M5ii would've been better. It wouldn't be much of a debate now. There is no compelling reason to buy the E-M5iii over the E-M1ii. Better yet, with the impending release of the E-M1iii, the prices of the E-M1ii may drop even further and make it an even more compelling purchase.
I was kinda hoping for a camera that brought the EM5.ii up to speed, but it seems that Olympus have moved the M5 into the M10 territory, its dumbed down the EM5 and Im soooooo disappointed, yes its got some tricks from the M1.ii but then, they had to do something for it! it sounds like they've gone 'Plastic; with a massive P, I think Ill be sticking with the M5.ii , lets see what they bring out next year!
The G9 has seen substantial discounts. I can get one for £875 in the UK brand new. I've seen it for even less than this. The Olympus is £1099. That's quite a difference, considering the G9 beats it in almost every regard.
@@daveoum8586 That's an amazing price. I saw a good deal at the UK Photography Show on the G9 in March. If I remember correctly. £899 with the non Leica 12-60 kit lens, an extra battery, SD card and the official battery grip. Which is the best price I have seen for a genuine UK model rather than grey import.
@@youknowwho9247 Ah yes, let's compare second hand to brand new. Always a perfect and fair comparison. Let's also not mention the price of Sony glass. I've never seen a Mk3 for 900 quid second hand anyway.
Well...it is nothing groundbreaking but like our friend Gordon has pointed out: it is the best vlogging cam out there. Also: the usual weaknesses Oly had are gone. There is no weakness, unlike Panasonic (DFD anyone?). And while I use EM1.2 I would call myself a very clear Panasonic fan. Finally: I do not think canabilising on Em1X sales was a reason, it is I think a clear indication hwat Em1.3 will have next spring....
Fun to watch as always. Describing the different Olympus models and their names when comparing features is confusing as hell (even when I'm familiar with their product line up).
Even thou there are so many new releases, nothing is compelling about them. Even the z50 touches all requirements, people still gonna go with Canon m50 released last year. I think price matters the most. And Canon m50 does the job well!
I was looking at the EMD5 Miii as the B cam for my EMD1 Mii. As you suggested, the EMD5miii has the guts. Of the 1 Mii. Since this camera sells for more than the 1Mii I’ll simply buy another 1Mii. That seems like a simple solution. Thank you for the review. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
England is my city? But the one advantage this has over the X-T3 (which is more expensive BTW) is the IBIS, and not just any IBIS but the legendary Olympus one. People have taken 5s exposures handheld with that.
@@xmlthegreat Even Olympus marketing only claims 6 stops of stabilization, so that 5 second hand held exposure would have had to be on a 10mm equivalent focal length lens. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Besides, most companies now have IBIS that's good for 4-5 stops and Olympus isn't making any advancements, so just the stabilisation is really not worth the other huge drawbacks that come with the tiny MFT sensor.
@@youknowwho9247 I shoot with an E-M5 Mark II with a 25mm lens (so a 50mm MFT equivalent) and can handheld with an acceptable sharpness up to 2 seconds. I can't even claim to have the steadiest of hands so provided that I can already do that with an older model, I believe 5 seconds is definitely possible when given to the right hands. I've seen some in DPReview forums and even in Robin Wong's older blog entries. Olympus may be lacking in a lot of respects compared to other brands but IBIS is definitely their strongest, and some people like me prioritize that (if not also the small size). Then again, once other companies finally figure out an IBIS implementation that's better or even up to par, then that's likely (and sadly) could be the nail in the coffin for them if they don't keep up with every other else.
@@elleporidae The IBIS in the Nikon Z cameras is virtually as good already anyway. And 'acceptable sharpness' is highly subjective. Personally I find MFT to barely be sharp enough on a tripod because the sensors are such low res.
I don't have an issue with plastic if it's used in the right places. I agree it doesn't "feel" as nice but when used correctly it can be a great way to save weight. That being said, the camera should cost less than it does. I'm an EM5Mkii owner and if I were to upgrade I would get an Em-1Mkii.
I agree with you on all points - However I have one on order as a second camera to the Em 1 mark 2 - But I think feel that the Mark 3 due next year will be my ideal last camera I will ever buy.
200th like here! Anyways, great video. Sorry to hear Alberta is freezing; I was out in a T-shirt today here in Toronto. ;) I'm a fan of the way the EM5 series looks; I can get away with some stealthy street photography and hide the camera in my coat pocket when needed. It's almost a fashion accessory. The PDAF is something I'm keen on, as is the rock solid IBIS, but otherwise it feels like it brings not a whole lot. I'm indifferent to weight; though the size matters to me. MFT has few advantages over full-frame so I feel like it needs to exploit what benefits it does have.
Though I no longer shoot Olympus, I appreciate them as a company and am a fan of the m4/3 format. That said, have they lost their minds? For the same money you can buy the beautifully crafted PEN-F. For $300 more, you can get the proven EM-1 MKII. Sure, you get a higher resolution sensor (which I wouldn’t particularly want in m4/3) and PDAF, but it seems like a parts bin camera and a huge step backwards in terms of build quality. Anyone wanting a smaller Olympus body would be better served with the current EM-5 or the EM-10. I hope this isn’t a trend...
I've been looking at this camera and the fugi xs10. I like olympus but I'm leaning towards the fugi. The kit lense for the om5iii is a 12-45 f4. To get this body with a 12-40 f2.8 is $2,000!. Even with the better lense I'm not sure the overall performance would match the XS10. What are your thoughts between these two?
I see no point buying this over E-M1 II. Saving about 100g is meaningless. Maybe a person with tiny hands would prefer the M5 (I'm looking at you, Donald J.! :), but in reality, 2nd card slot, bigger battery, more comfortable grip and suitable for both smaller and bigger lenses - that's all M1 for the same price. Plus headphone jack and 120hz EVF mode, which one can switch on and off...
It is over 150 grams. I have the Em1.2 and keep it, I do not vlog. But 150 gram is a lot. A vlogger is not putting on a 100-400 Panaleica or 40-150 2.8 Oly.
I'm sure the real street price will be lower in very little time. I think that this camera will stay at around 900 euros and the em1mkii at 1200 euros till the em1mkiii comes out
After waiting all the years this is a real let down.....For a few dollars more the E-M1 Mark 2 is the better choice here. Thanks for the honest review.
Thanks for telling us about the outer shell of new camera, especially the plastic "prism". How depressing. 8:45 Well, which Olympus "42.5mm lens" enabled sync-IS in your setup?
Using a pro lens makes it similar in size (and price) to a full frame from, say, Sony. If size was not an issue, would you pick m4/3 or ff? m43 will get you longer zoom but ff gets you a bigger sensor and (my guess) a better low light performance, maybe a better dynamic range if you can use it. I'm still using APS-C camera from Sony and wanted to go either the smaller camera route (m43) or larger camera because they have better zoom lens selection compared to my non-stabilized A6000 (can't do a handheld shot at 1/10th of a second without getting blurred picture, and using a short shutter with high iso results in a crapton of noise). Maybe I should just stick to smartphones, I'm not a pro and pictures are for family album only...
How do you fare this camera against the Fuji xt 3?? As I wish to upgrade but I'm at a crossroads in my decision making.. Like the silver colour on both so retro looking. I don't need video recording just a camera that'll take amazing photographs..
EM1 mark II for me is the best value, after you have itemized its features side by side. Kind of a turn off having a plastic base plate? Did I hear that right?
I don't understand how this camera is a good sign for MFT. They re-released the E-M1 II in a plastic body. Nothing new, zero investment in research and development. If anything, this shows that Olympus has given up and is just trying to extract a few last dollars from the fanbase.
Although I like the sensor-processor-af upgrades as well as the overall features that make this camera quite complete, in this regard it is no better than latest releases from Canon, Sony, Fuji and Nikon. I say that with a little disappointment because M43 used to be an innovative system at this price range. Right now many aps-c models have caught up in features/size and price/feature ratios. It's a too long topic for a comment of course, but my point is that IMO such M43 bodies are mainly worth if you want a compact system (I mean you should own more lenses than kit zoom to really appreciate the size factor). Which for many is a very good reason. Like it is for me. The other point is the price, a little high. Adding very little puts it in competition with very capable cameras. Overall I like it a lot, don't get me wrong. My fear is that it doesn't take much to make it look average if a direct competitor will feature 4k 60fps or a new high performance sensor or whatever technological advance one may think. My wish is to see Olympus do it first, to innovate.
I think Olympus (and others) have hit the buffers for now in terms of tech innovation. Until we see a radical new sensor design such as an organic sensor or maybe RGBW sensor plus global shutters then we are stuck with new releases merely tweaking what already exists.
Why would you buy a bigger system at the same price though? The compact size is the main reason I get to enjoy mine, I packed a bag full of lenses and an em5ii in my backpack, and if I feel like cycling around during a rainy day I'll drop it in my bag with my 12.40 ... though that even fits in a big jacket pocket.
Why not just get the E-M1ii? Better build and, if you know how to shop, maybe even cheaper. Best of all, it's available now. You don't have to wait on a preorder.
The E-M5 mark II is a much better buy. Olympus constantly has sales on it for $500ish on the refurbished page, and it goes for $400 used. With it you get the same weather sealing, in a solid feeling body with a great EVF.
@@AlumarsX at this stage of the game, If the em5mkiii has the same AF algotrithms as the em1kii then the AF on the em5mkiii will walk all over the em5mkii easily and low light AF is hell of a lot better and more confident.
Its odd, I remember last your you guys shot some nice fall colors. And here its still mostly green, while I also shot some nice fall images last week of October last year. Odd nature. I love the look the Oly cams have. But so plastic. I wish we finally would get some higher mpx on 4/3rd. As a Fullframe shooter, I really find them hard to deal with in dynamic range, flare, noise. I loved my lx1002 and my G85, but so limited in post.
I had a lot of reservations when I preordered this camera and this review compelled me to cancel my preorder. Come on Olympus, release a PEN-F II that has metal. I don’t care about 50 grams.
I had the G9 but didn't like the grip, AF wobble, colors and sometimes that adobe ACR processed RAW shadow color with a purple tint. On the omd em1 ii I liked the colors, grip and AF but I wish it had a dedicated ISO button, OLED viewfinder and handheld high-res...I'm guessing that'll be the omd em1 iii.
Olympus never left the bandwagon that is now on the rise - proper colors right off the gate. Sony tech is amazing but I don't personally want to spend hours sitting on LR to try to make the colors acceptable. I want to shoot important moments with any glass i like and get good photos just like in the film days and Olympus gives just that. (along with fuji and other niche brands)
I think Fuji's got this segment of the market nailed with their crop sensor XT3 & XT30 offerings. I still like to adapt my good old Olympus glass though.
No because a lot of people don't want to deal with x trans and they have few 3rd party options meaning higher fuji lens pricing. The xt30/20 grip is a joke and buttons, ugh. Anyway, enjoy fuji and no, they have nothing 'nailed'. Where are they in BCN rankings, 4th or 5th?
@@kinachahue Personally I like it for the fact that you have your exposure triangle laid out in front of you like old school cameras without any menu diving , along with 4k60, 10 bit, 400mbps, and Fuji colour science, and my 16mm/1.4 35mm/0/95 and 56mm/1.2. Micro is very specialized system if we speaking about prfessional and enthusiast photography. It's awesome for macro, maybe for street photo and landscapes, if you some only-instagram-portfolio photographer and don't need big prints... But you need spend a tons of money on this 1.2 lenses if you want some real light capturing capabilities. On aps-c you can get slightly more amount of light with sigma 1.4 C trio for price of one Olympus or PanaLeica lens, and on FF you get even one stop more light with 1.8 lenses.
A nice review. To me this looks to have been upgraded in the same way as the EM10 v3. I think the EM1.2 and G9 offer better value, unless you want the small size factor
I think Jordan undersold the video features here. If you are a run and gun shooter and need footage that is beautiful right out of camera- the colors on this and the omd em1-2 are beautiful. But then again so is the g9 and g95- but the main issue is video auto focus. That's where the Olympus brings it home. Everyone I showed 4k24p 237 bit rate footage too from the omd- em1 2 was blown away and it looks so much better right out of the camera than gh5 or any sony … plus it has BOTH incredible ibis and phase detect af- something very few cameras can say. The glaring hole in the omd em1-2 is no 120p slow mo option- that is now solved here. If you are like me and have a ton of photography experience and just want idiot proof video that looks like you are a lot more experienced than you are- this gives you the most cinematic easy to shoot and fast to share footage on the market. Im speaking from my experience with omd em1-2 after the 3.1 firmware and if this is the same but takes away log but adds 120p slow mo- this is a winner. The no headphone is a non issue for me- I rarely record audio and when I need to- I can easily connect headphones with my monitor
Other camera companies have brought out newer models with supposedly better tech, but you still prefer to shoot with the gh5/gh5s. Not even the so glorified Fuji xt3 has replaced your gh5. I think that the stupid sensor size thing has to end. Mft cameras have amazing usability and great image quality for many types of work.
The market clearly doesn't agree with you. MFT sales are shrinking faster than any other sensor format, and for good reasons. Why would anyone invest into a real camera when the results aren't much better than a smartphone's?
@@youknowwho9247 Market and marketing very rarely show the truth, they obviously want to sell bigger sensor size cameras and bigger lenses which all are more expensive and will give them way better margins. Small, lightweight and cost-effective is not their thing you know. If this was true that between a cell phone sensor and a m43 sensor was no difference it will be the same between micro 4/3 and full frame, because there is more size difference between a cell phone sensor to micro 4/3 that from micro 4/3 to full frame. Have you seen a cellphone sensor?

So the fact that they chose the GH5 and have stuck to it for 2 years in spite of all the upheaval in the camera market shows how good it is as a tool for fast, professional results.

I was waiting for this review. Thanks for doing this. :) I was hoping for more from Olympus, but I'm still happy that M43 is still alive.
Loved the colours! The world doesn't always have to look like a TV commercial.
"That's an Ikea!!" YOU guys seriously do the best job of education and entertainment.
Thanks Toby! We love your work too!
I freaking love you two... Y'all are gold...
1/7th of an Noct!!! Oh boy, you guys weren’t joking!!!
This is the 1st Olympus camera I've found attractive in years. I value compactness, low weight and am willing to forgo w a few features from the full sized models. It's 160g lighter than EM1ii, 240g vs G9. This model is a win for me.
The Pen-F is 434g and can be yours for $700 refurbished from Olympus.
@@AlumarsX It doesn't have good AFC+tracking though. And no 4k
@@bourbakis No MFT camera has good af tracking.
I really want to use Olympus for video. I love the image straight out of camera. Maybe it's finally worth picking one up.
Great review. Sums up how let down I feel about this camera after 4 years of waiting.
The best new feature of this camera is that is automatically makes the mkII cheaper.
I think if a company is going to go "el cheapo" with the build quality/materials then this needs to be reflected in the price, which it is not here!
@@greggpedder EM10.4, when it does come out, will be 600GBP.
really disappointed with Olympus going with an "upgraded EM-10" here, ignoring the EM-5 mk2..

Very good review. Thoughtful, informative, funny, natural and entertaining.
My god, you've finally got your mojo back. Thumbs up for educating, informing and entertaining. Thank you. Going to finally subscribe to DPReview.
That's why I upgraded EM5 MkII to EM1 MkII instead of EM5 MkIII. The 3.1 firmware upgrade plus two cards and no need for a grip with the EM1 MkII.
Cool, Watching here from Calgary. You really helped me nail down the right Camera. Moving from the Sony A6000 to the EM-5 MKiii. Have an awesome Day
I feel the same about the plastic body. Too sad. Loved the feeling of solid metal.
The best review on this camera so far. Well done guys.

More like real world camera test, that's what they are doing, putting camera in many situation and see how it performs.
Its not like canon fanboy channel, where they are going to review camera and not going to talk about dead weight and ugly looking camera.
I love Olympus I love the results but I always feel I want to upgrade and I’m frustrated why as if your happy with the results ( right ! )
Phase Detect heals all wounds
funghiman Now isn’t the time to be cost cutting and harshly segmenting a product line downward. It’s a free-for-all in the MILC marketplace. Either out-innovate, or play dead like Canon and get mauled.
I'm an Aussie and I used to live in Edmonton...Love your videos!!
Yes I think it's a nice camera but price should be 990 Eur. Cheers

Thanks in advance
What was your bad experience with a6400 ? I was also considering A6400 or em5 iii.
Thumbs up for the Noct measurement unit.
Anchovy Breakfast Club All we want is a perfect camera
Haha, when he was complaining about the features I thought he was gonna get hit by the olympus cripple hammer 😂

Great review. I wanted to buy the camera but now, after this video I ordered the EM1 Mark II
Really enjoying the new Jordan Noir thematic explorations.

Thanks for the great review guys. Can't help feel x-t3 is a better option. Love from the England.
Then again, once other companies finally figure out an IBIS implementation that's better or even up to par, then that's likely (and sadly) could be the nail in the coffin for them if they don't keep up with every other else.
even the X-T30 is a better looking option
@@elleporidae The IBIS in the Nikon Z cameras is virtually as good already anyway. And 'acceptable sharpness' is highly subjective. Personally I find MFT to barely be sharp enough on a tripod because the sensors are such low res.
I bought this little camera for travel only, now I use it every day. My beloved D750 full frame is collecting dust.
I would venture a guess that the em-1 mark iii will wow us. At least I hope. Now we wait? Maybe by next spring?
There are credible rumors from within Olympus saying that they will shut down their consumer camera division next year.
Landscope 360 Boy, I hope not.
Nice video, camera, and the stills taken with this thing are GREAT.
I agree with you on all points - However I have one on order as a second camera to the Em 1 mark 2 - But I think feel that the Mark 3 due next year will be my ideal last camera I will ever buy.
200th like here! Anyways, great video. Sorry to hear Alberta is freezing; I was out in a T-shirt today here in Toronto. ;)
I'm a fan of the way the EM5 series looks; I can get away with some stealthy street photography and hide the camera in my coat pocket when needed.
The only reviewers who aren’t kissing Olympus butt right now . You guys are awesome. Would this be a great RUclips creator camera ?
I am be curious about the continuous autofocus CAF and face / eye AF between these two !

I love Olympus cameras but crossing the roading to their service center in Bangkok is quite difficult.
E M1 Mark 2 is selling for $799 new and E M5 Mark 3 is selling for $1199 USD in Hong Kong so is pay extra $400 worth for E-M5 III over E-M1 II ?
I see no point buying this over E-M1 II. Saving about 100g is meaningless. Maybe a person with tiny hands would prefer the M5 (I'm looking at you, Donald J.! :), but in reality, 2nd card slot, bigger battery, more comfortable grip and suitable for both smaller and bigger lenses - that's all M1 for the same price. Plus headphone jack and 120hz EVF mode, which one can switch on and off...
I agree. but I do wish my em1 ii had an OLED ovf, then it'd be nearly perfect...oh and handheld high-res.
Momchil Yordanov 160 grams. and smaller form factor. It makes a difference.
This new camera kinda says "Go buy E-M1 II".
We just zoomed the 12-100mm F4 IS to match the frame of the 42.5mm F1.8
I have the Oly PEN EPL-5. How awesome is that?
It is states the video was shot on a GH5, but what were the studio close-ups of the Olympus shot with?
I'm happy that M43 is still alive.
I sold all my K-mount stuff. Over past couple years I decided to move to m43.
The video segment of the Em5ii has beautiful colors and highlight rollof!
I'm going to get this camera to replace my E-10. Size, weight and capabilities are a perfect fit for me. And I don't have to buy any lenses.

Here's hoping the E-M1 II gets 120 fps via firmware update. It has the same processor as the E-M5 III, so we know the camera CAN do it.
I had a lot of reservations when I preordered this camera and this review compelled me to cancel my preorder. Come on Olympus, release a PEN-F II that has metal. I don’t care about 50 grams.
Chris Hanson, Pen-F is a dead line I think? I don’t have high hopes for Olympus’ future.
My point is that it looks like Olympus is aiming for the same market segment, and IMO Fuji is a better offering. Your mileage may vary of course.
@@kinachahue Fuji is certainly doing a lot better than MFT is.
I am still an Olympus fan! Not sure about OM System though.
These videos are good for buying lenses. I shoot FF Canon and a friend wanted something light weight to carry along and learn so I got them the OMD-D 5EEMS iii...... I took the camera out today to the lake and the image quality was cell phone quality :/
Great review guys, no headphone jack...why do camera companies cripple these things.
Cripple hammer incoming ...
Finally someone that points at the downsides of this camera after the deluge of hype from those invited at the events... My same feelings
i waited for you , for very long !!!!
Have you seen a cellphone sensor?
these two guys are funny, i enjoy their banter and small personal clips. "Thats a IKEA" haha
This or the GX9? I'm coming from the Fuji X line and I use it for both video and photos.
What fujifilm camera do you have I really like fujifilm look. I'm a new to the camera world.
Plastic? Did they borrow some design cues from the Yashica Y35? Video colors are on point though.
Great video as usual guys but darn, no mic jack:-/ Almost the perfect camera!
There is a mic input. It hides behind the top-most rubber flap on the left of the camera.
Yup, so sorry I confuse the mic with the headphone jack! This camera seems to really be amazing for such a small size.
as a mountain biker that wants a camera to have in the bag I won't go for this then, as the plastic parts are concerning. I guess I can have it in a protective bag, but still, and the plastic really screams use a strap to me. but good idea anyway, but not a good thing for sports photographers I guess, like someone crashing a bike into you or a basketball or whatever hitting the camera. will breaking the plastic cover break the waterproofing if there is any?
I think it’s a great little camera. The price isn’t right though when the G9 and EM1.2 are better and near the same price.
Especially since the E-M1 II and G9 are already overpriced.
I don't how of G9 and EM1 are better. They are all crippled one way or another. There is NO prefect hybrid camera and the will never be one
@@snowwalker9999 The a7 III is pretty close though. Much closer than the MFT options anyway.
@@youknowwho9247 I am curious why a7 iii is so popular. Is it because of its video features?
Interesting video. Thanks Chris and Jordan. Always a pleasure to watch. 👏😉
