  • This was my fastest lap of some TF time last week. I spoke to the driver of the Polo who indicated left. He said it was his first lap and he had no idea he had to keep right. I think it's about time the 'Ring have a note on the back of lap cards or some clearer signs.
    Car specs:
    MK2 Golf GTI 8v (125-130bhp aprox)
    Newman 268 Cam
    Milltek Exhaust
    KW V3 Coilovers
    280mm G60 brakes, Maxx discs and Ds2500 Pads
    Nankang NS-2R
    Full Interior, including spare wheel and jack! - 980kg

    I can definetly see why the price went to the moon. The sound and the feeling you get from driving a car like this is amazing, and a realy nice job driving there bud!

    Great GTI MKII and very good driving. I had also one in my young years.. No Cat-Engine with 112 hp base, tuned cylinder head, manifold, sintermetall clutch.. IDK how much power it had but i think like 125-130 HP.. Iam 170 km away from the NS but never could drive with it because the supension was to low :)

    It's a proper small world dude: I follow your build on e38, I have the royal blue 16v (Tom-uk). I work for Jaguar and I was out at the ring testing when we went out after work to see tourist fahren, I was telling my mate that I knew a guy on the forums who brings his mk2 8v out here and that I'm dying to bring mine and then you came round the corner- couldn't believe it!
    I think i must have seen you on a previous lap as there was way more traffic than this one ^. Good lap mate, maybe next year I'll take mine and see if I can post a better time ;)

      James Cope. Car looked ace man, brilliant change from the endless porsches and m3s you see over there! It looked really quick, we were at brunchen. No im an engineer, you aren't allowed to drive for work on the track if you have a license, I got to go out on a passenger lap in the f type svr with a pro driver tho 😬 posted around an 8 min I think. Currently at Nardo bowl in Italy where you can nearly vmax them: they let us drive here hahah

    Good lap, James. Without that Ford family car end of Brünnchen it might have been 1-2 seconds quicker. But we are not chasing lap times :-)

      exactly! this wasn't my cleanest lap but looking at the footage after it was the quickest, due to little traffic and no yellow flags :D

    I watched your video quite a few times. Love the grunt of its 8v .I have a 91 jetta 1.8 rv with a digifart 2 which i hate only 100hp. So did research find I can get close to 30 more hp with some mods according to the rules of this digi2 shit .So it's either I do this 8v or a later 2.0 turbo don t like vr6 cause it's played out. So I'm in the air with this .

    @James Cope You notice an outrageous improvement of your first videos in the circuit to this, congratulations is a time for the car that is. I also have a gti PB and it does not run like yours. a greeting

      Daniel Sanchez Lopez thanks Daniel, yes not only has the car evolved but so has my knowledge for the circuit. I feel like a sub 9 would be achievable with a different tyres

      Daniel Sanchez Lopez its a Newman 268 which is only a very mild cam. I think its around £200. I wouldnt expect huge gains from it. It did do wonders for mine - giving power throughout the rev range and generally seemed to "open it up" hope thats helps 👍🏼

    Nice driving You should have the golf dynoed it will help you to see the amount of power the car makes in the rev band and give you a better understanding of where to apply its power to achieve the upmost efficiency at the given time

      S.A. F.R.A thanks for the comment 👍🏼 although dyno tests do absolutely nothing for knowing a car. All they are good for is tuning (obviously) and pub talk power figures. Actually knowing an engine, its power and how its delivered comes from driving and getting experience with it. So with no disrespect i couldn’t disagree more with you. - especially when this engine has such little power on such a large track, every time you get back on the power your foot is buried to the floor, you may modulate mid corner but really you are mostly flat out for the majority of the lap. 👍🏼

      TL VAGA hey, yes i have a full build thread which spans over 10 years. I found the golf in a barn when i was 16. The full thread is over on clubgti. But currently all the links are broken due to the photobucket disaster! Once its back up and running ill send over a link :-)

    Anything done to the Air Filter? Sounds amazing, and I love the pops when shifting, I have the same engine with a Schrick 268 Cam, 16V Exhaust, 4 2 1 Exhaust Headers, but my car doesn't sound like that sadly ;(

      Ah really! It sounds like you have a similar set up. I used a standard airbox but its been drilled and the restrictive trumpet at the front of the box removed. I also use a k&n panel filter which may help for the sound 👍🏼

      @@Jimladvw Thanks, I think I still have the restrictive thing in there, but I also drilled into the bottom of the airbox.
      I'm going to get K&N Filter and maybe a new exhaust setup soon, I hope it'll sound like that

      @@voqzmk2 you can drill on the wing side of the airbox too, and the front. Make sure the holes are at the bottom of the box so the air still passes through the filter 👍🏼

      @@Jimladvw I can't drill the top or front of the airbox, because the police will probably see that, but I can drill some on the side too I think

      @@voqzmk2 no dont do the top, as the air wont pass through the filter. You wont see any holes on the front face or the side of the box 👍🏼

      Pingman its just an ebay job mate. They are all very much the same design, just a kinked metal strip with 3 holes (so you can choose how short you want the throw)

      Tim Osmond hi Tim what is it you’d like to know? The engine hasnt had a remap, these engines are too old for that kind of thing. You can get fuel “chips” but you only need them if there isnt enough fuel 👍🏼

    @James Cope what brand of oil do you use in the engine to withstand circuitry?

      Daniel Sanchez Lopez I use Mobile Super 2000. Its a 10/40 semi synthetic. Its a fairly cheapish oil at around £25 for 5 litres but it seems to cope with the higher temps fine. It does burn alot of oil when on track! But its an old engine so its expected 👍🏼

      James Cope Ok, thanks. Actually i use Total Quartz 7000 semi sintetic 10w40, 18€ 5Litres. But the Next change i Will use Oil fully sintethic 5w40 Oil Motul x-cess. My use is not track, only normal Drive. Mi engine not burn Oil in my normal use.

    Takes me back to my GTi days. Is the head flowed? I had a digifant 8v for a long time & yours sounds a bit lazy by comparison. Have you removed the oval plate & snorkel out of the front of the airbox?
    A tidy lap- you need to build the confidence to stay flat through the foxhole compression though- as you aren’t arriving mega fast

      No just a standard head. Yep airbox is cleared out 👍🏼 yep at this point id only done about 20 laps of the ring. id taken the foxhole flat once before but I felt it unsettled the car through the compression and compromised the following corners to Adneau Forst.

      Thanks for your reply! If you don’t mind me asking, would you happen to know the bore of the Milltek system? I don’t want to go for anything too large on mine and I can’t find any dimensions on the web

      @@jackharrisonbrown1598 Hi mate, no problem. If i remember correctly its a 2.5 inch system, or perhaps 2.25inch... either will be ideal. you don't want to go too big on an N/A engine as you said, it can have negative effects on performance :)

      fattony19961 it has a full manifold back stainless exhaust made by Milltek - which replicates the standard system. But im only running 2 of the 3 boxes. It was a newman 268 cam, head has been rebuilt. 👍🏼

    Straight piped 8 valves sound like tractors. My 8 valve backfires really loud from 3rd to 4th

      Austin Abrahamson awful arent they. You have to be really careful with 4 pots or they just end up sounding like a saxo with a cheery bomb 😂

      Pingman no they arent progressive. But the vast majority of my set up lies with the dampers! 👍🏼

      works out to roughly 6 kg/mm front and 5 kg/mm rear, how 'hard' do you find it on normal UK roads?

      Pingman its honestly brilliant, but again i find this is down to the dampers. I’ve previously had Budget FK coilovers which were awful, weitecs (kw v1) which were comfy but too soft for fast road/track. And now these V3’s. in “comfort mode” the car is as soft as my dads passat. In track mode it will rattle some bones! Best of both worlds :-)

      Real Scoot thanks for the comment :-) yes i agree, however this has always been a road car. Its it alot lighter now than in this video. Now has no rear seats, 2 lightweight seats and a full cage for stiffness 👍🏼 Its still fully carpeted inside, almost like a “clubsport”

      Snape 980kg was the factory quoted spec. This was before i had a cage in the car. So just a full interior
