- The fastest lap from my latest trip to the Ring. One of the best trips yet, did 1,000 miles, completing 10 laps, and lots of Autobahn runs at top speed.
Car Specs:
Mk2 Golf GTI 8v - No Power Steering (PAS), No ABS, No TSC, standard open diff.
Engine: 1.8 8v GTI engine, full stainless exhaust (4-1), Newman 268 Cam. (approx 120-130bhp)
Chassis: KW V3 Coilovers, Solid camber adjust top mounts, Stiffened wishbones, Polybushes, custom front and rear braces, standard roll bars.
Interior: Full 6 point roll cage, fixed bucket seats, 6 point harnesses. Full carpets, front sound deadening and doorcards remain.
Brakes: 280mm grooved Corrado front disc, Larger M/C, Braided lines, ATE type 200 fluid (superblue) DS2500 front pads, Tarox Strada rear pads, with standard discs
Weight: Approx 950-980kg
Tyres: Nankang NS-2R

That's a fantastic time. I had some KW V3 clubsport coilovers on my old s4 and they were v good. Incredibly well set up car and good driving to boot. Just shows you don't need masses of power to have fun and shows how food these cars were back in the day

btw i had one like this. gti KR which was replaced by 8v EV engine, but mine was in 6/10 condition, yours looks like a real gti should! respect

What amazes me is how the gears and braking points are almost identical to how I do it when I play a game like Forza or Gran Turismo. I guess they are very accurate and true to real life.
Its remarkably similar isnt it! Ive spent hours and hours on sims, and ive done around 40 laps in real life. Sims dont give you direct feedback but they do let you know whats coming over a blind crest which is always nice! 😅

This gave me so much inspiration for my nurburgring trip in my MK2. You're lucky to still have a working sunroof and full cage in place! Had to secure mine in place to make room for the top of the cage 😅

Id heard “bad” things about aftermarket ones and them making the car very skittish. But as the car has developed it is something im looking at. I’m hoping to get some aftermarket ones and weld a blade to the end so i have more adjustment 👍🏼

How did the cam affect the driving? any downsides to the Newmans?
Not at all 👍🏼 only went for a mild cam as i didnt want to lose torque, made a huge difference with the 4 brand manifold. As standard the power would tail off around 5k rpm, now it pulls hard right up to the red 👍🏼
Did you have to do valve work or did you just bolt on the cam?

I promise you, what you are doing in that Golf is more dangerous than most modern F1 events EVEN with the speeds they are going, and they are barely allowed to drive in the wet nowdays.. so called best drivers in the world and FIA acting like it's kindergarden I swear.
Yes perhaps! Ive tried to make the car as safe as possible (full 6 point cage, 6 point harnesses and bucket seats) but its still a 35 year old car…
