Nearly 40 years since he died, and still one of the most influential bass players in music, not just metal. He is the reason why I picked up bass
Just metal.
@bobobobee9708 debatable. He had studied classical music and other genres, he took inspiration to write many of his riffs. So for me is music in general
@@marcotaf6744 Of course its "Debatable" as music, with any art, is fairly subjective. But he is almost universally in _most_ bass players' top 10.
You have to take many things into consideration when discussing this: One very important one. Context. How many, at the time Cliff recorded THIS, where doing something similar? Wah, fuzz pedal, recording solos written and performed exclusively on Bass, fingerstyle, etc.
As said, in the early 80's. Not today. Context matters when discussing visionary players.
Today, 2024, finding a bass player that _doesn't_ use a wah, fuzz, and other effects playing percussive fingerstyle solos would be difficult. But in 1982? Psh. You had a very small handful and no internet to distribute their presence.
Thats what makes someone like Cliff so inspirational. Not only that but he wrote and played on only 3 of Metallicas _unarguably_ most iconic albums, of their entire career. Just a few years... And we are still talking about him today.
PS: "According to a 2011 Rolling Stone poll of readers, the top 10 bass players of all time are:
Victor Wooten, _Cliff Burton_ , Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones, Les Claypool, Geddy Lee, and Paul McCartney."
"Good artist borrow, great artists steal"
just metal.
@@marcotaf6744 that does not mean he was inspirational to players outside of metal. That’s what inspired him.
Cliff was also the only member who was classically trained and could read sheet music
Yep, imagine how much better their music could of been.
Never heard the song before....says ..soo euhhhmmm....turns around and starts playing. Gotta love Judson..🤘🤘
🤘
14:49 Nailed it! Cliff was HUGELY into the Baroque era of classical music.
This was a masterpiece left to us by the master Cliff Burton.
Cliff is one of the main users of the Morley Power Wah Fuzz from the 70s. Its a really unique pedal that allows you to use it as a volume, blend between fuzz/clean, wah, or fuzz and wah. It also runs off AC since it has a transformer in it. The way the pedal was contolled was very different from other wah pedals, that typically use a linear toothed gear that rolls a potentiometer. The morley pedals use a light detecting resistor (LDR) in order to conrol the effect. A light from a car dashboard which doubles as the on/off indicator, is mounted at the back of the pedal. When you move the treadle it moves a shroud over the the LDR to control the resistance the same way a pot does in other pedals. Its a very unuqie pedal that really shaped cliffs sound and to this day is a bit of a holy grail for bass gear nerds.
Need to show Judson the cover of Anesthesia from S&M2. That dude did a phenomenal job!! 🤘😤🤘
Rob?
@@Jdwdogg no, it was a dude from the San Francisco Symphony. It's on RUclips. Check it out.
Ohhhh
I was about to recommend it aswell ! The cover is by Scott Pingel and is as epic as the way he made it to SM2 (there is an interview on how he made it from the idea to the live performance on metalupyourpodcast)
this realization that the wash of feedback and distortion etc between notes, slides, pulls all of that is MUSIC, it's part of the loud styles of music to get lost in the maelstrom, then harness the lightning and pull it back towards something is so key to getting and loving this kind of shit. Judson gets it all, what sensitive ears. And Cliff, from the grave, transferred his message 100% once again. Through the mists and the haze, trying to bring the message to YOU
Cliff was the genius behind all the “prog” influence on the first albums of metallica. Thank you Cliff🙏🏻🙏🏻
Key thing when trying to recreate Cliff's sound, you must run your distortion BEFORE the wah. Then your shit will scream like a demon being ass raped by Cliff Burton.
The version of this by Scott Pingle on the S&M2 album is ridiculous. I can't watch it without being left sobbing.
Cliff Burton, what a fucking loss. Glad I got to see him do this live a few times before his untimely death.
🤘
The Hendrix of bass. Was great seeing Judson's face as those wild noises rang out.
Good shout on more from And Justice, much underrated that album.
Wow Ben Harper!! That’s a great artist man!
fresh cut looking fire 🔥
Good job fella's, loved this one.
Cliff!!! Love this.
They did their 2nd show with a symphony called S&M. During the show, James Hetfield brings out a guy who plays an electric upright bass who does an AMAZING performance of this. I had tears in my eyes when I first heard it.
Of all the reactions of yours I’ve watched, this seems to be your favorite. I agree. I saw them live in 1983, it was absolutely amazing!
Cliff was one of the greats
i can relate to judson how he explains things and thinking out loud, love his insight on music
A favourite of mine for three whole decades
One of the songs that pushed me into bass guitar
I was lucky. I actually got to see Cliff Burton play this live. April 1986 in Chicago.
soooo good!... have a great day you two! \m/
Do Jasons bass solo from Seattle 1989 next
He was the best ever in my opinion and loved your reaction
Cheers
Wow, great to hear about the background..
Thanks
Today's two for one:
Metallica AND Ben Harper.
Nice😮
I heard this solo for the first time 41 years ago, blew me away and confused the hell out of me at the same time. Loved it then , love it now just as much...just seems really weird not launching into Whiplash, I tend to view them as the same song but maybe that's my mistake. Great choice gents...and to Judson...don't forget John Scofield, a key component (admittedly occasionally!) to the awesome Medeski Martin Wood groove , and probably the coolest guitar player around for the last 50 years. Again Gents, you're knockin' it out of the park with these vids...keep it up and stay happy, sane and centered. Thanks.
Saw this live in a bar when they released the album what a show
The rendition from the San Fransisco Symphony collaboration would be great for you guys to react to!
Disposable Heroes next!
Made me start playing bass in high school. RIP Cliff. Still playing at 42
Listening to Judson speak about his favorite artist near the end reminds me a lot about what I like about my own favorite band, Vildhjarta.
You guys checked them out and didn't seem to know what to make of them, but I highly encourage you to try them out again.
"Brännmärkt" is the song you should check out, really hits on all the elements that make them special.
There will never be another bass player like Cliff Burton he wasn’t just technically brilliant he was also unique
Morley fuzz/wah was a game changer for me, yet another thing to thank Cliff for.
For those who may not be aware, "Metal up your ass" was refused by the record company so they went with "kill 'em all"
As in, "kill all the record distributors!"
James mentions this on the old VHS tape, "Cliff 'em All"
Love how you're describing that string slide sound - Cliff played his bass with gains at what other guitarists describe as 'Fire-Breathing' levels. I first heard this describing Randy Rhodes' style - That he somehow mastered a guitar that screamed at the lightest touch and managed to draw a full range of dynamics out of an instrument that should, by all rights, ONLY be producing a cacophony of noise.
Cliff distilled that same mastery of touch of his instrument, drawing out the full dynamic range from something that should be so sensitive it ONLY produces noise.
Love seeing some ben harper representation. Hes a legend
Here here
I'm in Australia. I remember reading about the Bus accident in November 1986 in a monthly music magazine..that's how I learnt about Metallica. The music he could have made if he was still around. wow
No one like Cliff Burton. Greatest heavy metal bassist ive ever seen. I said what I said.
In my hour of need...
Sounds like Jud would love Terry Kath's - Free Form Guitar from the album Chicago Transit Authority. If he's not already familiar with it. Music concrete to entertain the most arduous Pink Floyd fan.
When I first heard this album or cassette as I said at my boyfriend's house and we just listened to really loud music kill em all was the best that I had heard and can we play that one again.
Fuck and the next song instantly plays in my mind, Disposable Heroes blasts your brain some more after such an amazing bass solo.
WHIPLASH!!
I think this was my most favorite expectation.
judson killed the intro holy crap
He really doesn't know Metallica nor Lars! Loved hearing him mention that the drums were too loud. "Of course, Lars has to stand out always. Even if it sounds like beating on pots and pans!" I hope he hears/learns of Lars turning the Bass all the way down on And Justice..., the last album I can really enjoy. Thanks Lars!
Thats how B.S.o.D. (Andreas Bettinger) plays his guitar too! Love it!
BSOD? Who are they?
can you do a video where you explain the tattoos? i'm curious about those backstories
Can't find the Welcome Home (Sanitarium) reaction video, hope to see this one day ;)
You should play one of the concert vids of this for him 🙂
CLIFF❤️🤘🏼
RIP Cliff, the best ever.
Grew up head banging to Metallica and the like in the 80s, discovered MMW in the 90s. And here I am hearing you contrast the two right now. What a long strange trip, eh?
ren ,,youll love his music
I think I'll be analyzing this solo for the rest of my life
🔥🔥🔥🔥
🤘🤘
I guess I had the same thought like Richard at around 9:10 when Judson was playing :)
That's funny, i also thought for a long time, that some guitar must be there for a while, whether it would have been Kirk or James. I always loved to concentrate on the base line in songs, so this one fulfilled my dreams.
It goes into track 06; Whiplash
🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
if yall did Welcom Home, it ain't up on youtube yet.
Judson needs more instrumental songs. For example what will he react to the sublime metal ballad The Rome Pro(G)ject "Seven Hills And A River" (2016). Quite recommended
Try Diablo Swing Orchestra
15k usd is around 47k today.
there was a band called Sleepytime Gorilla Museum that made most of their interments bicycle parts and power tools and guitars and violin great male and female vocals they we amazing to watch live very much organized beautiful noise too bad they never made it big. Give em a shot I recommend "Sleep is Wrong"
Now watch him play live 1983 Chicago
Interesting take on music.
the winter is for lovers because the summer is too hot for lovin
🤠
You have to do some Mgla, Exercises in futility II or V 😁
Bach was a big influence on cliff
Yes this song actually transitions smoothly into "Whiplash"
You need to hit Judson with Low Man's Lyric haha.
Cliff was known for putting things together
That never belong in the same piece
BRB, gonna listen to the rest of this song....you know...Whiplash.
I bought this album in 83 and I cannot hear Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) without hearing Whiplash right after it.
So Judson might like Mr. Bungle then?
The key to Metal Up Your Ass was the cover that would have gone with it, depicting a toilet with a hand holding a sword coming up out of it. LMFAO
There is metalhead reacts, there is pianist reacts. Maybe in the future you should both react to something you both don't know?
We’ve done that a couple of times with Nightwish and Epica. Planning to do more in the future! 🤘
@@Greatmeasures Must've missed that, i'll be sure to check it out.
Maybe if Judson like noise so much you could try some noise rock?
@@regeman100 yeah, I’d be willing to do that. I’ll run it by him
@@Greatmeasures try Squarepusher-Dark Steering
"Let me tell Metallica how to engineer.." is something someone should have said during ...And Justice For All.
Someone should have told them how to engineer that St. Anger snare, because that was a mess too lol
Why is Jude playing a Death Magnetic song on piano?
Does Judson have a Super Bowl 21 tattoo??? Or does that XXI mean something else?????
Something else..
👿🔱😈... and almost forgot..tardigrade inferno.. Clockwork God 🤗
HAVE HIM REACT TO TAKE NO PRISONERS !!!!!!
Well... the drill sound effect...
Agree with the drums.. however, that’s the pulling teeth. The in your face crashing drums. The open section is as the anesthesia starts to kick in, middle section is drifting off, and the drums is pulling teeth. It’s meant to be jarring.
REACT TO OCTAVARIUM BY DREAM THEATER PLEASE ❤
"I love just noise".
Someone sent Judson a copy of Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music". 🤣
"20 minutes of preparation" yeah that was weed and a couple beer as is tradition for him. legend.
edit yeah i should have said "was", but he still is. GOD: MAKE ME A SONG OR PERISH!! Cliff: gemme 20 mins
Cliff and Steve Harris taught me how to play bass (indirectly).
Love playing along to this (clean) but give up when the drums come in because they dominate far too much. This live version is perfect for that tho:
ruclips.net/video/2kdUJ5NAnTc/видео.html
ok, the drums dominating isn't the reason why I give up that part.. far too fast with the effects that I don't have, sounds silly to play and I can't tap a 6-string bass that accurately
Glash breaking
I would like this pianist to hear some prog rock of 70s like Firth Of Fifth by Genesis. That would be much more interesting than metal stuff, come on
Noise rock please. Thee oh sees
Time for some European thrash metal: bring in the Kreator
To everyone who gives shit to Kirk about using a pedal think about who taught him maybe they both learned something
It's funny because every time this guy plays something and says you know what that is the other says no and to honest no one knows what the F he's playing because not one song has sounded anything like the original but OK. Good musician but just play one song that we car recognize
I can't deny his influence and writing on the band, but I think this is one of worst things ever recorded. I know people will get mad, but it's alright if you like it, it just sounds like a fuzzy boring mess to me.
This song defines why I don’t care for Cliff Burton’s bass playing. Don’t get me wrong. I acknowledge his skills and impact on the metal scene….however I hate distortion on a bass guitar. Along with his style of choosing to play bass like a lead electric guitar. Lots of licks, solos, and melodies, but lacking on groove and rhythm, which I believe is more important for the bass guitars focus.
Some like, some don't. His talent was undeniable. I assume you've heard Eugene from Jinjer. That probably fits your happy place.
I mean he plays it "regularly" on all other songs, though i understand the sentiment.
@@Dimchek970 Except the intro in For Whom The Bell Tolls.
@@Dimchek970
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Call Of Ktulu
Orion
Damage Inc.
Those are the main examples I can instantly think of when it comes to hearing Cliff’s signature distortion, wah peddle, and leads. But I’m sure another fan can name more.
The whole band lacked groove, blame that on Lars
Too much noise. I personally don’t like electric bass sound.
