What subject matter do you identify with the most in metal lyrics?
**If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse and they’re ready to get help, contact us via email.**
thegreatmeasures@gmail.com
Lyrics about the internal struggle between the good and bad thoughts in our head and how to ultimately choose the positive mindset. Corey Taylor of Slipknot really focuses on this in songs such as “People=Shit, The Devil in I, Duality, The Negative One, etc.
Songs that deal with history, literature, and the arts. Also Dugeons & Dragons-type lyrics. In other words, Iron Maiden (for the former) and any incarnation of Ronnie James Dio (for the latter).
@@mournblade1066 Agree 100% but I would add also horror and darker lyrics of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate.
Define what a Jewish riff actually is... Lol
For sure metal from the beginning talks about the darkness in general but specially from religion like satanic topics (not just this kind of darkness of course, but for sure there's a lot of this)
Richard miming ''DIE'' and the cheers audiences do got me going aswell
Just noticed he does the parts on binge and purge, great measures!
Same, sitting in my car waiting for something, and getting all jacked up watching/listening to this. Ready to inflict some property damage!
just noticed what you did there. equally great measures from your side, mate!@@Psychograce93
Fast Forward?@@Chet_Philodenge
I got to be apart of that in 2018, James was about 10 feet away with the circular stage. Playing in front of me during the chorus, incredible
"Let it be written, let it be done".
Who knew I could use that piece of education one day?
That part is from the cecil b demille movie, not from the bible. But much of the rest of the song is from the bible.
The involuntary head movement started almost immediately 😂
Straws Pulled at Random - Meshuggah is a song i'd be very interested in seeing a reaction to, definitely one of their most beautiful pieces in my opinion.
Great reaction and I loved seeing Richard mouthing not only the “DIE” but also the MF that James added to the live versions! 🤘
I’m not in any way criticizing Judson’s opinion, as it’s the main reason I tune in to these…but he says the same thing another reaction channel host (a classical composer) has said before about being bored that some metal songs stay in either E or D minor. I think it’s important to remember that unlike piano, metal guitarists have to pick a tuning and the bassist and drummer must tune their instruments accordingly. Most older metal was in these tunings because a standard tuned guitar has a low E and the next lowest is an A. And part of “Heavy” in Heavy Metal is rooted in power chords sprinkled in between chopping and/or palm muting on the two lowest strings for maximum heaviness. Bands like Korn, Deftones etc. then came along with seven string guitars and the new (Nu) tunings went to B standard and drop A and so forth. Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to share that info because Judson is fairly new to metal. Love the channel and the interaction between you two!
It was Jason* who added the live ad-libs to Creeping Death! 🤘🏻
@@Scooby_DumIf you're referring to the "mf die" it was Cliff who started that. You can look up literally any live version with Cliff.
Cliff's driving Bass so strong in this one.
Unfortunately not in the mix 😢
Can't be heard though lmao. James guitar is dominating all the low end
This is like one of the most iconic songs ever done.
Love your reactions and discussions!
The songs name from exodus was "die by my hand"
The lowest note on the guitar… open low E string. Together with the 5th, it is creating a heavy power chord. That’s one of the basic characteristics of the genre and style. It’s inherent to the whole thrash muted riffs and guitar playing technique of this style. Goes to almost all the bands.
the chat after this one made me think of behemoth 'blow your trumpets gabriel', and the possible discourse you two could have over that one 👍
I personally would find it highly entertaining if they reacted to their music video for "O Father O Satan O Sun!" 😎
Have Judson listen to some King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Motor Spirit!
Have a nice one guys!
I second this! great song from a great album. moooootor
It’s a great live song , and always get the crowd hyped!!!
I remember getting this at 14, and praying to God that it would not replace Iron Maiden as my favorite band. Needless to say, I did not go on my first date for a very long time after that.
It's so awesome that this is sang from the plagues point of view. This is an absolute metal masterpiece if there has ever been one. I'll never forget hearing it for the first time reading the lyrics in the cassette insert. What a time! Thanks for what you boys do!
“What’s the piano song called?”
-Judson-> “Lick my love pump.”
Very interesting analysis, keep it up guys! 🤘
I highly recommend to check out the first track from the 30th anniversary Metallica Black List album. Metallica invited other artist to reimagin the songs flip them around how ever they see fit but keep the Lyrics. The Warning's Enter Sandman reimagining is outstanding on many levels. The OMV is outstanding as well, and you won't have any copyright issues with it.
Agreed 100%, a great suggestion!
So someone covered Metallicas ripoff of Excel's song? It's like taking a shit and eating it and repeat.
@@antiqueguy6397 ‘Tapping into the emotional void’ has a similar chord progression but not something that is unique, you can only arrange chords in an order that will sound right; chord progressions are not covered by copyright laws, otherwise 99% of all music couldn’t exist. I have heard both many times and wouldn’t say based on me being a musician for the past 50 years that Metallica may have found inspiration in their track but didn’t rip it off. As regards being disrespectful of the band in question, that’s just plain trolling!!!
Great suggestion, and got a thumbs up from Metallica, as well as every Metallica fan that I’ve seen watch it. The general consensus is “Wow, that was pretty cool.”
@antiqueguy6397 Sounds like something your mom would do.
About composing in Em, it's really because of the tuning of the guitar. It's way easier to chug the low E open string because it leaves your left hand free to do other things. You palm mute the E and you can prepare a chord on the other strings to play it ultra efficient and crushing. A palm muted open E sounds great too. A lot of Metallica songs use that and it's pretty much used by a lot of metal bands that tune to E standard.
I've always loved the vocal melodies in the chorus and that bridge section! Would love to see some Be'lakor! They're one of my favorite bands of all time, up there with TBDM (though different styles). Songs I'd suggest as starters:
-Countless Skies
-In Parting
-An Ember's Arc
-Much More Was Lost
Those second 2 are part of concept albums that tell stories. An Ember's Arc is the start of a story for its album and it's about the fusion in the sun creating a photon of light, so there's no needed context other than "it continues from there". Much More Was Lost is the last song of an album, so just for context the people that the kids come across in their adventures in that song are references to victims of tragic lives in the other songs. It's about the kids losing their innocence and blissful ignorance of the sadness of the world so to speak. The album as a whole is a collection of tragic stories of people living around a mountain over time
May I suggest a Metallica song reimaged by The Warning. Metallica invited them to cover it as part of the 30th anniversary of the Black album, The Warnings "cover" is the first track on the Blacklist album. There is an OMV and they did it live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX on 08/29/2022.
An awesome wave by alt j is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Nice playing mate
Another great song and review this is my favorite Metallica song of all time
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs, not just because it's great, but because I'm Jewish and as a Jew... we don't have very many decent songs to enjoy. Actually, there was a short lived Yiddish heavy metal band from Israel called "Gevolt" and they're great. I love some of their songs (basically heavy metal folk songs). "Tum Balalayke" & "Tshiribim Tshiribom" for example, but they've had a bunch of band members come and go and haven't released anything since 2015, but we do have Creeping Death (thank you Metallica) and The Ten Commandments is an awesome movie. It's missing a few key elements (story-wise) but it was already a very costly production at the time. I love that it's an abridged retelling of the story, not just the 10th plague and it's a high energy song which gets the blood pumping (no pun intended).
Playing Creeping Death is how I start my Passover Seder every year. 100% true. I just can't play my favorite live version (Moscow '91) because I do have a 7 year old niece.
Creeping Judson!!! 🤘🏻😎 YEAH!!!
He doesn't feel Metallica like we'll fans do. Period!
Metallica has been my favorite band for like 15 years, but he's into something...
What you mean
Also, E minor is where James's voice is at.
Although I am team Iron Maiden all the way, I have to say that "Creeping Death" is the single greatest heavy metal song of all time. It is totally badass.
Why must there be teams? One isn’t allowed to like both?
Iron Maiden = Em....😇😉
Sick Cryptopsy hoodie, Richard!! 🤘🏼🔥
And, you’re 100% correct about Kirk writing the part that was supposed to be part of an Exodus song. Can’t remember the name of the song though.
Baseball season started, good to catch up with you boys for this one especially.
The Four Horsemen next? :)
Props to Judson for giving voice to legit musician gripes. I played Metallica songs as part of a band set for a long time and they definitely do begin to run together due to everything being in E/m... the fact that I've been listening to them my entire life did little to ease the situation.
That said, Creeping Death is easily one of my favs and one of the only ones I never got lost in. Go figure
First. Great review and great song.
Loved the feedback and insight, I know what you mean with the disconnect.
The Live '91 Moscow concert interaction was best example of crowd interaction IMHO
Great Measures
Crreeeping measures!
I remember looking to get some speakers for my new stereo system and going to the local "audio corner" type store (remember those?), and had the salesman play this song thru a pair of Becker loudspeakers. Sold! bought them on the spot. My parents hated those speakers hehe
I was 24 years old when this album came out. Being a BIG fan of Zeppelin, Sabbath & Deep Purple from the age of nine, How could I deny this band? This song to me, Is their absolute zenith in songwriting. MOP is a flawless album, But Creeping Death was their first epic indulgence in quasi - classical metal. Cliff was the glue that put this song together... RIP Mr. Burton.
The choruses (partly) and that bridge where they repeat the chant “die” along with the other lyrics in between……”by my hand, I creep across the land, killing first born man”……is told in first person by the “Creeping Death” itself, which is one of the coolest/evilest/weirdest things (given the subject matter) ever! 🤘🏼
"THIS IS FOR MATILDAAAA"
Am I only person here who likes both Alt J and Metallica?
Nah alt J is a vibe dawg
not at all, good dude!
I've never heard of Alt J before, but "This is for Matilda" is probably the most iconic line from the movie 'Leon: The Professional'.
Jedson seems to like both lol
You guys were talking about exodus and I completely forgot about that band!!! Thx for reminding me lol
Stone Sour did a great cover of Creeping Death. Corey Taylor vocals and great drumming by Roy Mayorga
The Exodus song mentioned, which contains the bridge riff of Creeping Death, is Die by His Hand.
Mr. J rocking the Ralph Lauren sweater🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯
I saw that “die die die mother effer die” Jason Newsted backing vocals edition you did there. 😂
This is the best metallica song on the best metallica album.
Check out Septicflesh, a orchestral death metal band from Greece. They write entire orchestral compositions and mix it with death metal.
Songs i recommend:
Anubis
Persepolis
A Great Mass of Death
Portrait of the Headless Man
Coming Storm
Lovecraft's Death
@zZgroza Yes,yes!! 🤘
❤🤟
Would love if you could revisit Death as well, wonder what he would think of Spirit Crusher or Crystal Mountain
Ironically the die by my hand bridge part was taken from a Exodus song with similar title when Kirk Hammett wrote the rifff.
I think I remember Kirk saying that was the first riff he ever wrote when he was like fifteen or sixteen. Pretty dope ass first riff!
Loving all the videos, would be great to see you both listen to Wintersun's Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios of Time, Land Of Snow And Sorrow and Sons Of Winter And Stars.
They were just untouchable from 1983-1991. (I know the Black album is controversial with metalheads). But, I'm not sure any band has ever had so many absolute bangers on 5 consecutive albums... certainly in the metal genre. Just incredible song after incredible song.
I was laughing during your intro discussion. My Dad would also quote Yul Brynner all the time. Growing up if any of us kids got mad at a chore or something that my Mom made us do, my Dad would say "So let it be written! So let it be done!"...I never knew what it was from and then when I heard Creeping Death in high school I thought it was an original saying from Hetfield, so I asked my Dad if he listened to Metallica because of the quote and he said "hell no, its from The Ten Commandments movie" lol
great intro
Great reaction! You have to react, analyze "The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica!!! You guys are awesome!!! It's the best on RUclips!!!
And also react, analyze another hymn, another masterpiece of Heavy Metal: Metal Church "Metal Church", the title track of the sacred and classic 1984 album by this special American band!!!
Greetings from Brazil!!!
Dream Theatre- Pull me under 🙏🙏🙏
Would love to see reactions to these:
Death - Lack of comprehension (or Crystal Mountain)
The Faceless - Planetary Duality I & II
The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal (or Miasma)
Cynic - Veil of Maya (or The Space for This)
Opeth - When (or The Moor)
Crystal Mountain and Nocturnal would be perfect
Most of the metal bands are in Em or Am because E and A the lowest notes on the lowest strings which makes it easier to drone or chug on those strings. Even in the alternate tunings, they are in the minor key of whatever the lowest note they can play is
OMG I just got my first set of acoustic guitar for my 19th wedding anniversary. I guess he figured that will shut me up. I've been talking about it for 30 years.
Show him the live version in Moscow
20:40 "Die By My Hand" by Exodus
Alt-J are from my hometown. Leeds.
Hah!
"What kind of music is it?"
"They're English."
00:28 This has a Book Of Shadows kinda feel To it.
Its not Metal but its Zakk Wylde. You should play something off the first Book of Shadows album for the Pianist, Its good from beginning to end
yeah, talk about a perfect song
This is "The" Metallica song. This is their thrash anthem....
For a Thrash song it's pretty mid.
I'd consider Whiplash or Fight Fire with Fire much more "Thrash Anthem" than this.
The name of the Exodus song that has the bridge riff that you were talking about is “Die by my Hand.” And the Exodus guys were pissed about Creeping Death cause of that. But Kirk says he wrote that riff when he was 15.
Die by his hand is the song.
I thought Judson was playing "Lies" by Marina and the Diamonds. Very similar sounding. The Alt-J song is way more famous but I had never heard it.
Ha, he knew all the live James-isms to add in there. Like "emmer effer dIe!" (that was actually Jason if I remember correctly), and "I shall pass, emmer effer yeeeahh!"
It was Jason with the iconic “mother effer, die!”
To add interest by choosing an alternative option, a performance of the iconic Metallica track Enter Sandman by a trio of 3 sisters from Mexico initially in 2014 when they were 9, 12 & 14 - a very creditable performance mentioned by Metallica themselves (now 25 million+ views) followed by their #1 track on the Metallica Blacklist album, a collaboration with an unlikely other (Alessia Cara the Canadian R&B singer), a reimagined version, completed on a 10 day schedule due to circumstances. The other complication was that TW were in Mexico and Alessia was in Canada and there were strict travel restrictions due to Covid. Despite this it was completed and in the can on time for inclusion in the album. It is an absolute masterpiece, their take on it has changed many real Metallica fans’s mind on their favourite version of it!
It would be really interesting to see what you guys make of them!
I always like musicians and metal head opinions on The Warning and this would be both. I'm willing to bet money they will both like it.
It's usually e minor because they need that pedal e note to be easily accessible, don't they? Unless they change the tuning of course.
This is a good probably even just okay song on this album. The lyrical content is basically what is awesome about the song. Also great drums as throughout this album. Too bad Lars gave up playing like this around the Black Album at least live but I digress 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯
8:55 -> ME! ... when i show this song to my "non-metalhead-friends" xD lol :D
Love the reactions guys!
I think the solo supports the feeling of urgency and flight as well as the tension and anxiety associated with confrontation and the effort to survive or succeed when your life is at stake rather than trying to align with the specifics of either the cultures or plot of the story.
Incidentally Jewish scholars have identified that the story of exodus is an amalgamation of a bunch of different older stories and Moses is an amalgam of about 3 or 4 protagonists from those stories. Ie the whole thing is hogswash.
Additionally Israel’s own archeologists have confirmed that the archeological evidence found since they took over the land shows that the hebrews lived in the area since long before the time period of the exodus story.
It’s a fanciful tail designed to give us a reason to thank god for our freedom and claim that our religious laws (which took the place of civil law in those times) came from god.
Today we continue to celebrate Passover despite these facts because Jews care more about their traditions than about the truth.
Specifically, it's about the ten plagues, especially the last one, and is told from the POV of the Angel of Death.
May I suggest The Gathering's "Eleanor" or "Strange Machines"? I think these would be worth you gentlemen the listen. This channel is good, really different, like it.
ben afflack and neil patrick herris talking about metallica
😂 I was going to point out your spelling and then I got it lol
If only there were a way to show Judson what the live version of the song looks like. But since that's not possible, we'll just have to make due with the retelling of what it was like.
Please react to Wintersun.... Sons of Winter and Stars then maybe Loneliness 🙏🙏🙏
minuto 1:37 la mejor parte ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wonder what he would think if he heard children of Bodom-Kissing the shadows or Symphony X The Odyssey
You must see this music / video life Moscow 91.... 1.5 million people.
You should do the song Red Sea by Theocracy. 19 min song about the similar subject matter.
GIVE THIS MAN A HARPEJI ASAP
James Hetfield reckons The Thing That Should Not Be, off Master of Puppets is the heaviest thing they've ever done. I'm inclined to agree - I can't think of anything heavier right now. I wonder how Judson would feel about it?
Have you ever listened to any Slugdge? (not a typo). Pick literally anything they've done. Literally anything. They're one of the few bands I can say I love their entire discography.
Imagine having an entire band at your fingertips
I like honest opinion
A friend of mine's dad was told that the distorted guitar sound on this album was a bass guitar, so he thought that's what bass guitars sound like...so he saved up and bought a bass guitar, because of an album that's famous for having virtually inaudible bass guitar. Anyways...he eventually decided he might as well learn what a bass guitar actually is, and how to play it. He's really good today. I think it was his first time hearing distortion beyond what you hear in 80's power ballads, so he literally thought it was a different instrument.
Your friends dad was probably being told about the descending intro riff from who the bell tolls.
I was a metallica fan for a long time before I found out that was a bass riff. ( no internet or youtube back then )
It's impossible not to chant "mother fudger dye" in the breakdown because of Live Spit Binge & Purge.
Judson I agree with you - whatever you say. :)
What IS te song he is playing at the beginningbin the piano?
KNOWER - OVERTIME PLEASE!!!
You should take a listen to Hand of Doom by Black Sabbath.
I wonder why they never sit together while listening to the song?
Man they were drunk stoned kids😂😂😂 this shit is hella impressive
Would be nice to see a reaction of Type O Negative.
I grew up with Metallica and metal music and have gone through prog metal to classical music and I kinda agree, this song is awesome but musically it could be even more awesome if the riffs varied a bit and there would evolution of the motifs throughout the song. The riffs return always in a similar way and it kinda gets too repetitive after a few times
The book of EXODUS!!!!!
