This is one of the most energetic and epic songs live when played by Metallica, especially when the crowd starts screaming DIE DIE DIE... and when you add Jason Newsted’s vocals it becomes even better.
My favorite song by Metallica..The Four Horsemen. In fact, I posted it on my FB page recently & the bastards red flagged it! They said the content of the song was inappropriate & took it down! Freakin' Nazi's!!
I love how much respect and appreciation these guys have for all types of music. Most people don’t realize how difficult it is to play an instrument that well.
Metallica's intro hooks are the best in music. The first 30 seconds of almost every song (especially from the early albums) pull you in so completely that you get hyped for the rest. It's really incredible how effective they were.
James Hetfield is well-known to have an "iron wrist" in his right arm because the technique he's using to pick the strings known as "down picking" is hard to play consistently at the tempo he plays. So there is definitely some difficulty in what he's doing here. And the downpicking makes a lot of difference in how it sounds.
im a testament to that. i can play lead. but i cant play their stuff all down stroke even the ones that are suppose to be. like this songs verse riff. and master of puppets main riff and verse riff. those r the big ones.
@@deathgrinderb3284 What Hetfield does on guitar is virtuosity in its own right. To play like him, someone should downstroke all his life to get that level. Remember this guy lays down four tracks on top of each other, and precision is just out of this world.

I've been listening to Metallica since the late '80s and the slide drop into the "DIE!" riff in the breakdown _still_ gives me chills every time I hear it.
What James does with the guitar is most definitely NOT easy. Downpicking that fast and that cleanly is brutally difficult, especially when it's done for the entire song.
Actually with practice, downpicking is not that hard. I had to learn to do it in order to have the top Metallica tribute band in the world. Just practice. That's all it is.
@@Controllerbreaker Thanks. I should know, I had a Metallica tribute band, took me months of hours and hours every day of downpicking to be able to play their songs.
They had 0 radio play for the first 4 albums and they were still that popular. They played what they liked and wanted to play and didn't care what anyone else thought. They amassed this following during the glam hair metal phase of music.
About 20 years ago I was in a punk band that covered this song. It was the only song we played that brought people back IN to the club. Our guitarist was a metal guy so he was able to nail the solo note for note.
1 Kill 'em All 2 Ride The Lightning 3 Master of Puppets 4 Garage Days Inc. 5 ... And Justice For All 6 Load 7 Reload 8 S&M 9 St. Anger ... After this, I still bought every Metallica album put out, but the magic and inspiration became lackluster imo. What do you all think?
I bought this album, on cassette, in 1985. This old, dusty, furniture store had a small selection of cassettes. I saw the cover for Ride The Lightning and had to have it. After being dissatisfied with 80s pop and top 40 radio, I found my niche. They blew my 14 year old mind. This was my favorite song.
Man, this is what reaction videos are for! Seeing you guys jamming out and appreciating it rekindles that magic that us old fans felt when we heard it first. Truly love what you do and can't wait for the next Metallica or Tool or Opeth or whatever lights your fire next!
You should be there live when we all chant DIE DIE DIE DIE together in perfect synchronicity during this song. This song was released when I was 14. It went around on worn cassettes when I was a freshman. If we couldn't find one to buy, we'd record them for each other on metal mixtapes with Overkill, Exodus, Accept, Megadeth, Anthrax, and local faves like Gammacide and Pantera and Rigor Mortis. Yeah, I'm that old - Pantera were a local club band at Saavy's and Joe's Garage. You'll have to Google "cassettes".
Exactly! Just because something is more technical or faster doesn't make it better. A great riff is a great riff! Some of the most iconic songs in history are the easiest to play, and that doesn't make them any less iconic.
@@TheNothing6 Idk, don't get me wrong just because something is technical doesn't make it sound better. But as a guitarist and a drummer I can definitly appreciate technical stuff from a musical standpoint.
@@pizzakiep4157 Absolutely! I agree. I'm just saying that some of the easiest songs to play are some of the best songs of all time. Too many great ones in their first four albums for me to say for sure, but four horseman has to be in the contention for number one. Really you could just about pick any song off, kill em all, master, ride, or even justice and you could make a case for it being the greatest metal song of all time. Those four albums, and throw in garage days, and you have five of the greatest albums ever made.
This was my second song I ever heard from Metallica, (first one was for whom the bell tolls) and every riff in this song, including the solo, blew me away completely.
This song goes even faster and has so much more energy in live shows! If you want the highest energy version, their live in San Diego version is off the rails. They always drop the guitars out after the solo so it's just Lars going nuts on the drums with the bassist playing the riff, all while the crowd chants "DIE" at the top of their lungs
The live versions also contains the extended bridge, which contains a literal breakdown and simplifying of the song down to its most simple parts, which really adds to the song and makes it even better.

When you are a part of it. You never forget it. Same with Reign in Blood by Slayer as well.

Guitar player here. Sometimes it's difficult, sometimes it's easy, but what it really boils down is those little melodic transitions are all about songwriting, for which Metallica are phenomenal.
Rhythm guitar player here. I forever thank The Lord Almighty for MetallicA who makes rhythm guitar interesting. I was never good at soloing, but forming Met tribute band gave me the chance to share some glory with our lead guitarist 😛

The Russia one is probably great by default. Though, my favorite version is from cunning stunts in ‘97

@@kaomatic One song, an instrumental. The other songs are about: electric chair, dying on the battlefield, feeling hopeless over losing someone and this one about the exodus from Egypt.
Right out of the book of Exodus lol...

Just reading it gives me chills. Lol
could you ever imagine a Bible story told like this in a metal song. A method to the madness. a story of old told in a new way.
Yes, listen to Bloodgood or Tourniquet
I’d go to that church😆
Fuckin Hetfield man....
My Southern Baptist Grandmother wanted me to listen to Christian music...I played her this!
I can. I went to a Baptist school and my buddy always turned in "poetry" that was Metallica or Rush lyrics and got an A in english class... but he got a F any other time. it was hilarious... back in the late 80s.
This song is a Metallica concert staple. The WHOLE CROWD, EVERY TIME headbangs and chants "DIE. DIE DIE" along during the part of the song where James is singing "Die by my hand I creep across the land..." It is insane, every time. This song just pumps people up so much. Glad you enjoyed it! You guys NEED to see Metallica live, even if you just experience this song live.
This song will break your right wrist. You can have my word on that
Left 1 gets a workout too
@@Erron_OnyxYup. blackened is pretty brutal to play through.
Nah, the only constantly downpicked 16th note section are the 8 notes in the: [003-003]-00222222
@@Erron_Onyx I learned it originally on bass, but I have to say, I never found that beat change to be harder. In fact I found it easier because if felt more in rhythm. Don’t get me wrong, that riff is hard to play, on bass and guitar, but that beat change never gave me any issues. I do love it though.
I fap to Metallica primarily with my left hand but sometimes I do alternate. You might be right.
Hearing these raw reactions is the closest some of us will ever come to hearing the song again for the first time. Glad you guys enjoy it so much, it's special to get to see it.
This is one of the most energetic and epic songs live when played by Metallica, especially when the crowd starts screaming DIE DIE DIE... and when you add Jason Newsted’s vocals it becomes even better.
Imagine them reacting to "The Four Horsemen". Lord have mercy .. they will be blown away...rightfully so
I’m definitely waiting for that one!
My favorite song by Metallica..The Four Horsemen. In fact, I posted it on my FB page recently & the bastards red flagged it! They said the content of the song was inappropriate & took it down! Freakin' Nazi's!!
Either alabama or the beginning part are what I really wanna see
"For those of you who thinks this is their way this song is called the mechanix"
It's an alright son. Not better than creeping death.
That's a fact
The first minute of Disposable Heroes is my favorite of all time.
Completely agree
James Hetfield is well-known to have an "iron wrist" in his right arm because the technique he's using to pick the strings known as "down picking" is hard to play consistently at the tempo he plays. So there is definitely some difficulty in what he's doing here. And the downpicking makes a lot of difference in how it sounds.
im a testament to that. i can play lead. but i cant play their stuff all down stroke even the ones that are suppose to be. like this songs verse riff. and master of puppets main riff and verse riff. those r the big ones.
Difficult and he's singing at the same time ( at least when it's live ) ....mad mad respect for James since FOREVER!!!
@@deathgrinderb3284 What Hetfield does on guitar is virtuosity in its own right. To play like him, someone should downstroke all his life to get that level. Remember this guy lays down four tracks on top of each other, and precision is just out of this world.
The genius of this band writing music that was so deep, thoughtful and timeless in their 20's always amazes me. The greatest band of my lifetime, bar none.
Fellas, your reactions are straight on point.
They were just babies when they made this record.
It was so hard and revolutionary, at the time, even the heavy metal radio station (KNAC), wouldn't play it.
But fans persisted and they became huge.
One of the best bands ever.
Absolutely! Metallica are Legends!
Yeah I love the big 4 maybe not so much anthrax but they were all very young when they started
Yes. I remember calling KNAC on redial with my friends in 84 telling them they sucked and Metallica ruled!

Oh man, Ryan, you're going to love The Four Horsemen!
They haven't done The Four Horseman!?!?....
They do mentioned 'Sweet Home Alabama'... please do the bastardize version 🤭😉
Please do the four horseman!!!!! Awesome track!!!!!
This and Seek and Destroy are usually two of the last songs they’ll play at most concerts. Hearing a full crowd chanting “DIE!! BY MY HANDS!!” Its f***ing amazing in person. You all need to experience it if you can.
An entire stadium of metalheads pumping their fists felt like something like a Nazi Nuremberg rally.
My first 2 metallica concerts opened with creeping death. Can't be touched in my opinion for an opener
Can’t wait to be able to chant die at a Metallica concert
This one's even better live. Seattle 1989 was legendary
Was there, I was 22. Just turned 54 and saw Metallica pre-pandemic in Spokane December 2018. Monsters of Rock was great also July 1988 in Spokane.

I've been listening to Metallica since the late '80s and the slide drop into the "DIE!" riff in the breakdown _still_ gives me chills every time I hear it.
Hell yeah
What James does with the guitar is most definitely NOT easy. Downpicking that fast and that cleanly is brutally difficult, especially when it's done for the entire song.
Actually with practice, downpicking is not that hard. I had to learn to do it in order to have the top Metallica tribute band in the world. Just practice. That's all it is.
@@jarbarianexactly, and practicing to that level can be brutally difficult no matter how much you love the music.
@@Controllerbreaker Thanks. I should know, I had a Metallica tribute band, took me months of hours and hours every day of downpicking to be able to play their songs.
@@jarbarianThat sounds pretty freaking difficult.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Not difficult, just practice with a metronome 2 hours a day, just down picking.
Metallica's riffs are all mostly simple, but they are downpicked so fast that they become difficult. James is a downpicking god.
the most underrated riff guitar player in metal history imo, some of metallica riffs are harder than 90% death metal
Underrated???...it’s the almighty hettfield ...everyone knows who he is and what he did
Hetfield is a downpicking god for sure but rhythm guitar as well. The rhythm guitar on Justice is just phenomenal.
@@mikemedrano8579 100%, James' downpicking often overshadows the rest of his playing. He's an amazing rhythm player and is pretty good at solos.

@@Yabuddy53 Could be. But to be fair I love Metallica and am not really that familiar with their greater body of music 😏
This song reached perfection when they speed it up a bit and got Jason Newsted to sing back vocals.

Truly love what you do and can't wait for the next Metallica or Tool or Opeth or whatever lights your fire next!
at around 11:38, the crowd goes nuts with the "Die, die, die" chant!! What a killer song, one of Metallica's best! Glad you guys love it too!
You guys hands down break down a song with passion and understanding of music better than the rest. Props 🤘
It's not about how easy the guitar riffs are. It's about how awesome the riffs are. This band is too great to come up with these ideas.
I see people putting down music all the time and their argument is that it's easy to play. That's not a good argument. I've been playing guitar for 26 years and I'd say I'm pretty good. Music shouldn't be a competition to see who is faster or more technical, and I'm pretty fast and technical, but, quite frankly, some of the most technical guitar virtuosos I find tedious and boring.
Hot take:
James Hetfield's riffs are more impressive and more important to the Metallica sound than Kirk's solos (which I love, don't get me wrong).
