You know whats funny about that Phrase the Hoyo Team told you to describe her beauty?
Fish are sinking - Kiana gets memed to be a Tuna Fish
The Geese are Falling - Durandal gets meme to be a Goose
The Moon is hiding - Kiana meaning Moon or Moon Goddess in a different language
The Flowers are ashamed - Durandal is Wielding the Abyss Flower as her Weapon
idk if it was intentionally picked like this but its rather funny coincidence xD

The phrase is also famous in other Asian country too to reference "extreme beauty that even nature jealous", and the similarity we are seeing in the game is unintentional. Or, perhaps, the community is making "natural beauty comparison" as well.
In Vietnamese, it is translated exactly from Chinese phrase: "Chim sa cá lặn, hoa thẹn nguyệt nhường"
If I may, in English, it would sound like this: "Fishes dive, birds fall, flowers shy, moon hides." I really like how Mihoyo captured so much Asian, specifically Chinese, culture and philosophy in this design.

  • @keinzeit
    @keinzeit Год назад +91

hard relate to being a third-culture kid and sometimes feeling like you don't belong in either world. more and more i feel like what mihoyo is doing across all of its works, from games to music (especially with regard to hi3), is modernizing Chinese culture, just like what this battlesuit does for li sushang. great analysis!

I'm quite thankful you decided to make this video. I am currently working on three characters, one of which who's outfit is heavily based on Chinese clothing and largely inspired by Honkai's design philosophy. Separate post cause I don't want the two topics mixed together - I would love to see more outfit analysis on Honkai battlesuits. Fu Hua's Azure Empyrea in particular both in her base form and in her skins, and Sentience since I think hers is a very interesting look and I'd love a more detailed overview from someone that knows about costumes and costume design. I think there a quite a few skins with interesting looks even among Valks where the base battlesuit is designed with a function focus.

Li Shushang's design reminds me so much of Ling'er in the first Chinese Paladin game! She, too, had the blue/white porcelain colour scheme in her costume design. It took this video for me to connect the colour palette with porcelain & I'll likely go stare at that Guo Pei collection to sigh over how pretty it is after this vid.
This was such a fun video & I would love to see more "video game fashion analysis". The battlesuits of Fu Hua, designs for Ningguang and Xingqiu, and The Ever-Classic Chun-Li (another porcelain action girl!) come to mind. i think it would be extra cool if you "live reacted" to the designs of characters you've never played, trying to guess what they're like based on costume alone (this is an excuse for any of your friends/chat regulars to drag you into their own fandoms, lol). I, obvs, submit the character designs for the 1st & 3rd Chinese Paladin games for any such analysis. Thanks for such a cool video! Li Shushang hype, let's goooooo!

Finally got around to watching this!! Very cool breakdown :0 the jade bracelet reminds me of the viet “explanation” for it is the bracelet absorbs all your bad luck and negative emotions (and I believe it’s supposed to darken in colour) and it’ll break when it’s too “full” or to protect you. Could be superstition but my mom likes to say that the reason her old bracelet broke was to protect her wrist when she fell one time. Her wrist was fine, but the bracelet was broken. (She’s replaced it since then, this was years ago). I got a bracelet when I was super young from my viet grandma, but it doesn’t fit because I’ve grown since then lol. I’ll probably get one when I stop growing for sure, because the bracelet is very difficult to get off/never gets off :>

If you're specifically interested in Sushang the main game won't help much. She shows up very late into the story and her presentation clearly expects players to either already know about her or do their own research. Which is fair - she's not a main player in the story and just randomly shoving her backstory, sloppily into the chapter would be worse. But it does mean you either have to ask around people that know or track down the VN where she first appears. Now I'm not sure myself which one it is - I know Seven Swords is a VN where you see the story of Fu Hua and her martial arts school where one of the disciples is Sushang's mother (I think it's her mother), but I don't know how far things are explore in the VN and if Sushang's story is shown elsewhere. Anyone that knows better please clarify. I'm trying to be as vague as possible in order not to spoil any plot from the VN in case you want to play it. I know there is no official EN translation of it though and I'm not sure of the state and quality of the fanmade one.

Would be cool to see you talk about Senti’s design, really cool learning about all these Chinese things that make up these characters.

I learned some new things about my culture haha thank you Ying XD
I never knew- not even my parents told me that I should wear more red when my zodiac birth year comes around bruuuhh 😭 I always thought it was a year of good luck but y e e t I guess NOT
I also feel very disconnected from both cultures because I know damn well I don’t understand a lot of these traditional Chinese things being American born but I don’t entirely fit into the latter one either simply because I grew up in a different environment asdnfjnweksmql

Really nice breakdown on SUShang's fit! I dunno if you've planned for this, but maybe you could do the same thing for other battlesuits/outfits that have more of a Chinese theme. I for one would look forward to it!

I love that you’re mentioning Ben Ming nian, I’m not Chinese but am interested in astrology (western primarily), but halfway through my last Ben Ming nian i got more into Chinese astrology because, omg it was so bad I was like wtf is going on and found out about it ? I don’t own a lot of red clothing items but I wore my only red scarf religiously (a girl is superstitious regardless of origins), and now I watch out for my friends and family’s Ben Ming nian like I would Astro transits 🤣♥️

... cheesy comment aside, thank you for making this vid!
... also white and blue booba illuminated by cybernetically glowing jade rings waohhoo

Pretty much got most of it. As for getting past post chapter 9...take a deep breath, this is the most stressful part of the story and it doesn't let up for the next few chapters. If you haven't looked through the chronicles yet, all but the one about the Vodka girls are from earlier in the story at this point and may or may not bring some clarity to a few story points that have come up or are about to.
