  • Both ginger and turmeric have antinflammatory and antioxidant properties which support our immune system and may help to reduce inflammation in the body.
I always have fresh ginger in the house, always use ground turmeric in my cooking wherever I can and buy fresh turmeric root when available.
I have been working on my own gut boosting shots, rather than buy ones from Zoe for £2 a pop (in single use plastic and sweetened with banana, strawberry and apple purée. I not a massive fan).
Yes the apple, strawberry and banana will give a sweetness, but since most of us are not children anymore, I think we can also handle tarter flavours.
I use more ginger than turmeric, and you could add some carrots to the juice for good measure. While turmeric is great for us, too much is also not good for us. A bit like Goldilocks we need to find the right amount for us.
I use just a splash of the this juice and mix it with live kefir yoghurt. This way our body benefits from the live probiotic bacteria in the kefir, as well as the active compounds in turmeric and ginger.
Adding black pepper to the juice adds a compound called pipirine. Research shows that pipirine increases our absorption of the curcumin (the active compound in turmeric) by up to 2000%.
Gingerols have been shown to slow a pro inflammatory signalling pathway called NF-Kappa B in the body. Curcuminoids are both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
    Turmeric- Ginger Gut Shot
    Method
    1. Juice 50g turmeric root with 200g ginger root in a juicer (not blender). The juice will last for a week’s worth of shots. Keep in the fridge in a jam jar.
    2. Add some freshly milled black pepper.
    3. Add a small amount to your café and enjoy.
While, I am in nutritionist, I am not your Nutritionist. So do check for contraindications between any medicines you’re taking and turmeric as it can amplify the effects of some medications. This is general advice only.
