we have done a map of the whole of our village & everyone knows their W3W address. Great for deliveries (if they use it) but even more important for all the emergency services.
Seeing these old mystery pipes I always try to find where it starts and how to make it usable again because it is so fun to play pipe detective. In my grandma's home there was basement, wet basement in witch water bubbled up trough the concrete floor like through some spring and ran down the floor into a concrete pit in the corner and in that pit was an 4inch cast iron outlet to some unknown area. all around the house there was level field. No well, no drain pit, no ditch. I was spending my summer break at their house so I took it upon myself to find where the thing leads to, so I plugged the outlet and I used the well pump to fill the basement with 10 inches of water and then I released the plug and suddenly a huge vortex formed and water started to drain away. I ran upstairs and started to keep my ears open to hear where I can find the secret outlet. And I found it! turned out that 400 meters away there was a drain ditch for the whole field underground drainage. I went there and saw in the ditch, inside the shrubs black water was bubbling trough and pouring into the ditch. Turned out that the cast iron pipe was tied into the clay underground drain pipe and it went to the ditch. It was a lot of fun. Another story is when I bought my fist house there was a basement, and out of the wall underground were two pipes sticking out, both with old rust threads and both 3/4 inch, seemingly going to nowhere. I decided the hell of it, I will find where the pipes go to, so I hooked up a temporary feed with a long flexy Friday line and I turned on the mains valve and water started rushing into both pipes. I went outside and started looking where it may show up. Suddenly I hear distinct gurgling from my shed where the previous owner kept his garden stuff. I go inside and I see water pouring from the mini attic. I stop the water and go investigate and found a cut pipe, left bare inside the attic sticking out from the brick wall near the very top edge of the slanted roof. Turned out the guy had a black iron tank hanging on the roof so the sun could heat it up and he could shower outside during summer. I dug around the attic's trash and found remnants of the installation: the cut end of the pipe with soviet backflow valve and a cast iron shutoff. I made threads on the cut pipe and installed a shutoff valve so I can install the solar heater once more because the pipe is already there, I will install a jet pump from the well in the backyard and use the well water to shower and wash my hands in the summer time in the garden. so I went to the basement once after and I turned on the mains again to see where the second pipe went. after searching for 15 minutes all round the garden I thought it was capped underground somewhere but I noticed the water meter kept spinning. Lol. The other pipe turned out to be the old greenhouse irrigation system, made from perforated iron pipe in the basement soil area about 10 cm underground. I found out when I saw that the greenhouse is getting very wet for some reason. I then looked around the abandoned greenhouse and in the shrubs next to the door of the greenhouse I found an rusty cast iron valve and was bale to shut if off. I then determined that the steel pipe underground did not leak anywhere and following summer I installed the well jet pump system for the outside shower and sink, and I flushed out and repurposed the greenhouse irrigation system and it works very well, with an electric valve and a timer so all crops in the greenhouse get watered daily automatically. I even found a cast iron drain pipe underground, plugged at the bell with a wooden plug that went to the main sewer from the old shower area so I was able to hook up my outside shower and sink to it so I have fully working drain system and water supply system in my back yard during summer time. I determined it was really hooked up somewhere under the yard to the main sewer when I took off the drain pit cover and I ran some water trough the cats iron pipe and it ended up in the drain pit. so its not like it was going to some unknown place. That summer was a lot of fun.
Im a commercial plumber/hvac mechanic in the US. I would have cut the pipe below grade like you did and mega pressed an 1.5" cap on there done deal. That would probably be 200 USD job for me though, not everyone has a press tool let alone one that does mega press with the set of jaws you need too. I like seeing how plumbers in other parts of the world work, keep of the good work brother!

Pretty creative my plumbing brutha. I don’t know your money. But that would of been about $ 460.00 US in Oklahoma for me. I love how up beat you stay. Even though the conditions were less than favorable
If you're going to the merchants (and charging time) to buy tools you should already have that's probably taking the biscuit, other than that if its specific to the job and your working on a day rate fair enough.
Maybe in future you could suggest the customer digs out and exposes the pipe first so a highly skilled man isn't clocking up time using a spade lol. I suppose you could argue there was a health and safety aspect as you were not sure what was down there. £150 plus VAT wouldn't have been unreasonable in my opinion, but if its someone local, and all that, it can be tough to judge. I underprice jobs myself all the time so,.. lol. A handy lil hand pickaxe is useful for excavating soil out the way I find, churn up the soil then remove with the spade, saves a hurt neck,
Thanks,.I have got coffee all up my kitchen wall when you said u love "Bean". & A us not for Aardvark its Arsehole, and you know rrhe rest, look forwards to these every week
Jimmy, has the pipe been completely disconnected both ends because you've created what's called a dead leg (I'm sure you know) and if the house draws from that pipe then they could be drinking stagnant water. It could also be returning back to the supply which is bad news.
Unfortunately I have no idea where it goes! It was shut off on an underground valve next to the hole. From there it's anybody's guess! I have a hunch it goes back to the main, but it's hard to tell. And it's not in my pay bracket! Thanks for your comment though mate!
Easiest option on a bit of old steel like that is a Primofit cap, just cut off pipe, fit cap and tighten up. About 25 quid and 15 mins! Love the channel James!
"I've never seen that. I've never seen someone drive their garbage down to the street and beat the hell out of it with a stick, I've never seen that" Ray Peterson. The burbs. Love it😅
As an private supply/agricultural water engineer it’s Nice to see a domestic plumber getting their hands dirty 😂😂 But I have to agree on a few comments here and say you ideally need your find where the supply originates (via cat and genny would be easiest) as long dead legs can lead to bacteria build up.
I'm wondering if it would be possible to sort this with nothing more than a spade, an angle grinder, a hammer and a welder. Cut multiple slots 1 inch deep alone the diameter of the top of the pipe. Perhaps grind the outer pieces, making them narrower and easier to bend with a hammer. Use the hammer to squeeze the slot pieces together, making a point on the top. Grind Don a few mm to make a flat pointed top. Weld the whole top, joining all the slots and sealing any gaps. Let me know please if this would be possible. Cheers, Al.
That 1.5 inch threader required was the killer. PITA. I'll tend to swing by a job like this with the calipers just for a look and get the pipe size. Figure out what the bloody hell I'm going to do then rebook when I've got a plan. Sort of bloody job where your profit goes on a new tool for the van which never gets used again. Grrrrrr.....🙄😅

100 pounds that's not bad was expecting it to be way higher. That translates to about $130 US. That seems pretty fair although more is always better sort of. I think we were charged $600 to come and join two pieces of pipe back together where we had a pinhole leak. I cut out a section and had trouble getting it to solder so we finally gave up and called the plumber who came in and none of their tools fit in the area so they ended up using my pipe cutter and a shark bite fittings. I was expecting proper plumbing, I could've gone to the hardware store and got a slip fitting I had I know they existed and would've been done with this project for 50 bucks. At the same time you can't be asking more than somebody's income because you can't build trust with them and get more jobs but you also can't be taking the ones who want it for nothing.
