  • Formula One (F1) is the highest class of open-wheeled motor racing defined by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body. The "formula" in the name refers to a set of rules to which all participants and cars must conform. The F1 World Championship season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, held usually on purpose-built circuits, and in a few cases on closed city streets. Each winner is presented with a trophy and the results of each race are combined to determine two annual Championships, one for drivers and one for constructors. The World Championship for Drivers is held since 1950, after the Formula One standard was agreed upon in 1946. The Constructors' Championship was added for the 1958 season and has been awarded ever since.
Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most race wins in Formula One history, with 103 wins to date. Michael Schumacher, the previous record holder, is second with 91 wins, and Sebastian Vettel is third with 53 victories. Kimi Räikkönen holds the distinction of having the longest time between his first win and his last. He won his first Grand Prix at the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix, and his last at the 2018 United States Grand Prix, a span of 15 years and 212 days. Riccardo Patrese holds the record for the longest period of time between two race wins - more than six-and-a-half years between the 1983 South African Grand Prix and the 1990 San Marino Grand Prix. Mario Andretti had to wait the longest time between his maiden victory at the 1971 South African Grand Prix and his second win - coming five years, seven months and 18 days later at the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel holds the record for the most consecutive wins, having won nine Grands Prix in a row from the 2013 Belgian Grand Prix to the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen is the youngest winner of a Grand Prix; he was 18 years and 228 days old when he won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. Luigi Fagioli is the oldest winner of a Formula One Grand Prix; he was 53 years and 22 days old when he won the 1951 French Grand Prix.
As of the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, out of the 774 drivers who started a Grand Prix, there have been 113 Formula One Grand Prix winners. The first Grand Prix winner was Giuseppe Farina at the 1950 British Grand Prix, and the most recent driver to score their first Grand Prix win is George Russell who took his first win at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix. Three Grands Prix, the 1951 French, the 1956 Argentine and the 1957 British Grand Prix, were won by two drivers sharing a car.
This list includes the winners of the Indianapolis 500 race between 1950 and 1960, as they formed part of the World Championships, even though they were not run by Formula One regulations, nor are they referred to as Grands Prix.

The number of wins isn’t the measure of the drivers skill. In the early years of F1, they may be only a hand full of races, so the number of wins in a season still remains a small number. The measure of a drivers skill is better judged by % wins, then that would put at.
    No 1: Juan Manuel Fangio - 47.06%,
    No 2: Alberto Ascari - 40.63%,
    No 3: Jim Clark - 34.72%,
    No 4: Lewis Hamilton - 33.01%,
    No 5: Michael Schumacher - 29.64%,
    No 6: Jackie Stewart - 27.27%,
    No 7: Alain Prost - 25.63%,
    No 8: Ayrton Senna - 25.47%,
    No 9: Stirling Moss - 24.24%,
    No 10: Max Verstappen - 21.82%.
Some people may be surprised by some drivers who didn’t make the top 10.
I have added to my original comment:
    % podiums agains race starts.
    No 1: Dorino Serafini - 100% (only interred in 1 race 1950, finished 3rd)
    No 2: Luigi Fagioli - 85.71% (only interred in 7 races 1950 51, 6 podiums)
    No 3: Juan Manuel Fangio - 67.31%
    No 4: Louis Hamilton- 60.88%
    No 5: José Froilán González - 57.69%
    No 6: Giuseppe Farina - 57.14% (first F1 World Champion 1950)
    No 7: Alain Prost - 52.48%
    No 8: Alberto Ascari - 51.52 (double world champion 1952 & 53)
    No 9: Michael Schumacher - 50.32%
    N0 10: Mauri Rose - 50% (only entered in 2 races 1950 & 51, 1 podium)
    Sam Hanks - 50% (only entered in 8 races 1950-57, 4 podiums)
Again it my surprise some people by drivers that are missing from this list. But can this change who is the best F1 driver is/was.

Even that isn't the correct metric as many didn't get a championship-winning car until later in their career and even later the team goes shit, for example to say a driver is more skilled winning in 2020 Merc than a guy in let's say in 2012 Merc is a stupid comparison if we're talking about the skill alone so a better metric will be pole position to win ratio of course for people who have had multiple races wins more than 2 I can be wrong though but that's how I see it.

So the best sollution is maybe to use absolute victories and % at the same time. If you only use absolute numbers you'll find Fangio, one of the best of all time, on 12th place while he has won an incredible 47% of F1-races counting for the championship.
