Since in the manga canon, The substitute is controllable by the Pokemon, Yellow came up with the big-brain idea of shaping the substitute into a surfing board and letting Pikachu control the surfing.
I love how after this fight, Lance becomes fucking terrified of Yellow. Seeing the big, bad dragon master becoming scared shitless of this sweet, little girl is both hilarious and awesome.

Is it wacky and convoluted? yes, but that's kinda how i understand it. This battle was way more hype than I was expecting especially because Yellow is such an underdog and really should not have a chance at all. Evil Lance is crazy but way more interesting than his other incarnations. I can't believe I've been missing such a good story all this time definetly needs its own anime to do these moments justice! My favorite moment was caterpie evolving to metapod to sheild Yellow and then to Butterfree looking lile Yellow has wings. And spirit lugia??? Not sure how that works but it was crazy cool either way! Great stuff dude, I'd love more greatest battles with Blue and Green too

I watched the other day the Red vs. E4 video and I was really glad you were making these in really nice ways instead of the average "Hey guys! did you know an Arbok get sliced in half? :O :O" way, so it's really exciting to see this bit of the fight covered too. The whole E4 arc is really enjoyable to me, everyone actively participating in their own role and fights.
As much as I love to hate Giovanni, in his defense, he didn't know that the whole island was a giant badge energy amplifier, nor that his badge was the one the Elite 4 needed.
14:36 I really like how this is very similar to the badge boost that is in RBY and FRLG (I don't know for sure if it's in any others.) A fun and creative usage of a game mechanic that is never explicitly mentioned.
I'm so mad. I loved pokespe. The books, especially the first seven, were my childhood. Many years ago, I lost the seventh book, so I just reread the first six, but oh man I missed seeing how they actually finished the Kanto arc battles. I haven't seen the chapters in the seventh book in forever!

So, Pokemon Adventures started before Pokemon Stadium released and not too long after the anime started, so when it came to interpreting how attacks would look, no one actually had a clue if the gameboy animations were accurate or just the closest thing that the game boy could approximate. So, Mato and Kusata decided to interpret the move substitute, not as a doll, but instead as basically Pikachu's stand, created from its own life force. This is all it was during the Red arc and while it got use, it wasn't too crazy. But.... if it's just Pikachu's life force, shouldn't it be moldable into non-pikachu shapes if Pikachu wills it? The answer to that is YES. THAT IS WHAT THE SURFBOARD IS. PIKACHU IS RIDING PIKACHU. IT IS ACTUALLY SO INSANE AND DOES NOT FIT INTO POKEMON'S RULES BUT IT IS TOO COOL FOR ME CARE. Anyways, back to being normal. Yellow has always been one of my favorite Pokespe protags and Lance just is my favorite antag and I love the back and forth they have. Yellow refuses to battle because she loves Pokemon too much while Lance is ready to commit genocide... because he also loves Pokemon too much. In the end, Yellow gets backed up against a corner because your ideals just don't matter if you don't have the power to back it up, the experience but Yellow says "Fuck that." and turns her love into power. It's cheesy, but I really like it. Yellow has only been able to move through the story because of her kindness. That's how she has people like Blue, Green, Bill and the Team Rocket Commanders banding together and now it isn't just an element of her character, it's the most dangerous thing about her. Also it's just incredibly funny that she basically becomes a magical girl for the last stretch.
This shows the true terror of the Elite 4 , what u are supposed to feel like in the games!, also shows why lance is the boss of the others and they obey him

Honestly the fact that the evolution cancel is canonically tied to having a pokedex is awesome, which I guess in a way also explains why golbat won't evolve into crobat in fire red and leaf green with it instead saying ? if you don't have the national dex. It'll be cool if the same applies to the running shoes, but I still found it weird how her graveler evolved when it wasn't traded for it's evolution
Id bring up the argument that graveler was given to Yellow by Brock and the evolution was being postponed, but in Red and Blue there was an entire chapter that debunks that.

Better written protagonist, better plot, story , world building and much more diverse side cast. The teams for the protags are much more unique too. Just came here to say my piece on Pokémon Adventures’ Lance. The craziest thing about his plan to wipe out humanity/civilization, and reset the world back to when nature and Pokémon ruled. Or at least begin a new world, really echos what would become the character N. This version of Lance, really feels like a precursor to N. Both are radical, yet philosophical, moral leaders, with an agenda. A point to prove. That, while their execution is questionable, their motivation, has some weight to it. The thing is, they both, while trying to upset the status qoe, aren’t too dissimilar to the man that tried to use the four Pokémon gods to reshape the world. Or the old man that sacrificed untold billions to bring back his Flowette. Lance and N, echo these men. They’re so convinced in their beliefs, that they can’t see they’ve become destroyers. Yet still, N and Lance had a point you can’t deny. Their actions to achieve their goals? That can be more easily objected.
Pretty sure the Surf thing is a reference to the event-Pikachu that knows Surf, which you could get in the old games. I think it had a special animation in Pokémon Stadium where it would whip out a surfboard too, when using surf.

I love that they built a world that was meant to function more like an actual Pokémon world (with all the nonsense included) from the games. Especially RBY, the early games had a bunch of ‘lore’ that didn’t quite make sense since they didn’t really know what they were doing at the time.
tbh, I completely forget every time/never realize that Giovanni just dips when Lugia shows up... and does nothing else. Like, I doubt he was really just doing nothing and just let Lances plan come to fruition, but we never get told what. Maybe he was going for the other badges, or he figured that since it's his Earth-badge that's making things turn for the worse, it'd help if he left or at least got rid of the badge, but Giovanni, after that banger of an entrance, did not deserve that kind of exit. I also just realized, slightly off-topic, but Lugia is specifically tied to the time of dawn in this, and just relatively recently, I learned that Game Freak considered time to be a major factor for the Gen 2 games and its Legendaries, with the introduction of the day-night-cycle, in-game events that change by the day, and Ho-Oh and Lugia basically forming a trio with the time travel Pokemon Celebi, so it's pretty interesting that even with Lugias first appearence in the manga, they managed to fold at least aspects of that intent the developers had behind Ho-Oh and Lugia in there.

Just finished the Yellow chapter today lol, I jumped straight to GSC after RBG so I thought I need to finish the Yellow arc too. With that being said, I only need to read XY, ORAS, SM+USUM, and SWSH.

Remember, this was durring the first 2 pokemon games (pokemon red green blue & yellow and Pokemon Gold, silver, crystal,) so a LOT of rules haven't been solidified. the more pokemon goes through the ages the more the pokemon manga stays in the rules of the universe.
It would had been cool if you played Gohan's theme when Yellow was 'powering up'. TBH, this fight is the only cool thing that we ever see of Yellow. We haven't seen her for like 400 chapters now since the ending of Emerald. She is kinda a wasted character despite having potential to grow as a trainer and numerous ways to have character development.

I love that they built a world that was meant to function more like an actual Pokémon world (with all the nonsense included) from the games. Especially RBY, the early games had a bunch of ‘lore’ that didn’t quite make sense since they didn’t really know what they were doing at the time.

tbh, I completely forget every time/never realize that Giovanni just dips when Lugia shows up... and does nothing else. Like, I doubt he was really just doing nothing and just let Lances plan come to fruition, but we never get told what. Maybe he was going for the other badges, or he figured that since it's his Earth-badge that's making things turn for the worse, it'd help if he left or at least got rid of the badge, but Giovanni, after that banger of an entrance, did not deserve that kind of exit.
I also just realized, slightly off-topic, but Lugia is specifically tied to the time of dawn in this, and just relatively recently, I learned that Game Freak considered time to be a major factor for the Gen 2 games and its Legendaries, with the introduction of the day-night-cycle, in-game events that change by the day, and Ho-Oh and Lugia basically forming a trio with the time travel Pokemon Celebi, so it's pretty interesting that even with Lugias first appearence in the manga, they managed to fold at least aspects of that intent the developers had behind Ho-Oh and Lugia in there.

TBH, this fight is the only cool thing that we ever see of Yellow. We haven't seen her for like 400 chapters now since the ending of Emerald. She is kinda a wasted character despite having potential to grow as a trainer and numerous ways to have character development.
