I wish I knew Ash's secret to catching Tauros
Obviously it's rng manipulation
That secret is the REAL reason the episode was banned!
@@rooislangwtf I can't believe Ash would cheat like that
@@PulseEffects he's the same guy that used a sprinkler system in a rock gym to win, I wouldn't put anything past him tbh
He used the “fly to cinnabar” trick.
Sadly all the runs that have been done for this catagory are invalid, because none of them saw Ho-Oh on Route 1
True.
Shiny ho oh that is
That's freaking evil of you, someguy
Ash knows people will want to be him so he made sure that nobody can be him
Even if you saw Ho-Oh, you would need Brock to catch one of the 30 Tauros Ash caught.
Fun fact, if your Pikachu isn't happy enough by the time you get to Bulbasaur, you can use potions at full health on Pikachu which will trick the game into increasing happiness.
Medicine applied unnecessarily and excessively in search of "happiness"... concerning.
@@Krixwell proof that Game Freak associates happiness with drugs.

@@stellarsub-orbital9922 Although any herbal medicine lowers happiness.
Benadryl challenge
I love how someone must have pointed out that Ash *technically* caught only 29 Tauros when first thinking of this category. Every Tauros adds so much time it must have been a relief to remove one of them.
Speaking of, the last time I remember Ash using Tauros in battle was in the Orange Cup championship match. Did Ash ever use a Tauros in battle again after that?
@@paperluigi6132 In a tournament in Johto in the episode Jessie traded Lickytung for Wobbuffet, against Gary in the Johto League and against Anabel in the Battle Tower.
@@dukemon6163That's some memory.
As someone who always loves the Awful Games Done Quick block, the thing that this run made me realize I wanted is an "Awesome Games Done Awful" event, where players take some of the best, most famous speedgames and run the most painful categories. We could have this, and Twilight Princess low%, and Hollow Knight low%, and SMO minimum captures, and multiple runs could be going on at once so when one runner is doing a rupee slide you could watch another catching Tauros. It would be amazing, and Awful, but also amazing.
I love this idea so much. The mental image alone of Link staring at a rupee on one screen while a runner has been catching Tauros for 2 hours on the other screen and chat is going "GIVE IT UP FOR TAUROS 15 LETS GOOOOO" brings me so much joy.
Unfortunately would take too much time up at a regular AGDQ event. But perhaps it could be done as its own event, I would love to see that.
Hollow Knight low%... sweet jesus have mercy.
Twilight Princess low%, if I remember right, takes over 24 hours with at least 17 of those hours spent staring at rupees, so it would be incredibly long and boring. However, I've always liked the idea of trying to make it work by having other runs going on at the same time. During those hours-long sections where the runner is doing nothing, another runner could speedrun a different, shorter game whose run should finish by the time the Twilight Princess run needs to pick up again. Maybe while the other game is going on, the footage of the Twilight Princess run could still be playing in the corner, so the audience could check up on Link as he slowly phases through a wall while staring at a rupee. I don't know, I think that would be fun and hey, speedrun marathons like AGDQ tend to stream 24/7 for multiple days in a row anyway.
@@werisekk3 Depends, true ending low% (which I assume was the one meant) yeah I agree. Regular low percent, weird but not much longer than an any% speed run though I imagine much much harder (I have not done either or practiced my mechanics enough to even come close).
So I am the reason why they offically banned RNG manips in this category (before me it was unoffically banned). I found a manip for every pokemon one has to catch, but I never found a Tauros manip with a guaranteed catch so I never completed a Ash% run with manips. Maybe some day I will find my motivation to do it again.
The hero we need but don't deserve. 😭
RNG manip could be a seperate category
Real Chads are the reason people ban fun things, excellent work brother
It's ridiculous they would ban RNG manipulation
Imo they shouldn't have banned RNG manipulation.
If nothing else, it resembles plot armour.
The run should include encountering pidgey, throwing a poke ball and having it pop out
That would mean you have to reset everytime you accidentally caught it.
@@TheUltimateShade667 that’s the point
And ratatta eating stuff from your bag
You can also make pikachu happy by spamming potion on pikachu while in full health (around 4 to 6 times) means you only need 1 potion and stand and spam potion to pikachu (you can also check the happiness of pikachu by talking to it ( 1 heart to 5 heart )
Means you don't need to walk many time just to make pikachu happy to lessen the speed run time
I saw one of the Ash% runs do this! Any clue why this works?
@@PulseEffects
Probaly the game is coded to make pikachu positive attitude to + when healing it with item and - when losing a fight
Probably, the attitude + got bugged due to coding of game, because pikachu is already full health, the attitude + still get recorded as + even when the heal is not working (and since pokemon yellow is gen 1, they don't have things like patch that time to fix bugs/glitch in game)
My very first game was pokemon yellow and i still don't know how things work before, and just found things out by playing it for almost 3-4 years by resetting the data.
@PulseEffects So basically the code that increases Pikachu's happiness simply checks if an item was used, and doesn't have any kind of checks to see if the item actually worked or not. It would have been very easy to implement as far as I can tell (I don't know Assembly though) so it seems like the devs just straight up forgot to implement it and no one noticed.
@@CommanderWiggins Good old Gameboy era game code
@@SongokuJidai pikachu's happiness changes every fight and every steps, so it's not advisable to spam the potion before going to fight borck or going in mount moon, since the video is about speed run on ash journey, means its time consuming if the happines reverted after reaching baulbasaur
Might as well have been %Tauros speedrun
Wait. Ash gave Primeape away for training. Doesn't that mean that it should be put in the Day Care instead of released?
I'm pretty sure the reason it's counted as being released is because after that episode, Ash never sees Primeape again, so in a way, it kinda sorta technically counts
@@matthewkuscienko4616No primeape is not considered released it cameo again in the pokemon black and white opening, it is just training same with Charizard and Squirtle.
@thenameless7810 I know he technically didn't release Primeape, but it hasn't appeared in any actual episodes after he gave it away for training. Also, it appearing in an opening I'm pretty sure doesn't count
@@matthewkuscienko4616 Agreed, I always wondered even if Ash released his pokemon he could always still used them for example he technically released Greyninja and Goodra but he still have their pokeballs which he could still return them with. Also in the pokemon journey aim to be a pokemon master pidgeot return and decided to travel with Ash again which means that Ash still kept his pokeball. I imagine he still kept all the pokeballs of his pokemon that he had released in the past.
@@matthewkuscienko4616Yeah, but dropping it off at the daycare to never pick it up still fits more thematically. In both cases you're not actually releasing it, just giving it to someone else to train it even though you'll never see the result of that training
Fun fact: my first shiny was Noctowl in Crystal and I went "Cool! Ash's Noctowl is in the game! How fun!"
My first ever shiny was a Cleffa, in Crystal, from the egg you get from the daycare man, second was a rattatta in Sprout tower.
Mine was a Sandshrew I stumbled on accidentally and I was like "Wait it's green, is it sick?"
I’ve never encountered a shiny. Ever. 🥲
Reminds me of when in Sapphire as a kid I casually went 'Oh cool, Mirage Island is here today. That's neat.' and only many years later found out how enormously rare that actually was!
I had a shiny weedle. Thats how I learned how good Beedrill can be against psychic types. Of course, you have to outspeed or it might die.
The Squirtle squad episode doesn't have a gun...
It has a BAZOOKA.
The amount of assault rifles in that episode is insane LOL
@@PulseEffects I think the rationale is that other episodes are so over the top that they qualify for cartoon violence, but the Legend of Dratini having just the one hand gun was too realistic.
snake in smash bros logic
@@JadeyCatgirl99Yeah plus look at the Warden. He's based on Clint Eastwood
I kind of want to attempt this...
Honestly, you might suffer less through this than you did with beating the game with Onix. 😂
@@PulseEffects I don't know about that...the idea of playing through a Pokemon game with no candies or speedup already pains me LOL
If the route is actually designed for suffering, then losing before you even see the Elite Four should be the ending
if ash never battled the E4 that means we don't have to either
well thats it game over
Ash had a battle against Agatha after coming home from Hoenn.
(Granted, she was merely the temporary Stand-In Gymleader in the Viridian City Gym, but he did fight her.)
7:37 What kinda peeved me about this is that they shoot sakura petals. In the dub, they localized it to ice guns that shot snow, despite the petals looking nothing like them. They could’ve just left them as flower petals, or if they didn’t wanna use flowers, use confetti instead.
As soon as you mentioned the Tauros episode my stomach just sank because I knew what was coming.
oh my... when you said Safari Zone, I knew where you were going... and I just started laughing uncontrollably.
WHO WOULD SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO THAT!!!?????
The larger the speedrunning community, the more goofy speedrun categories they'll invent to one-up each other.
1:32 wow I never knew Gary's Eevee actually evolved differently base on how well you do.
If you lose Eevee evolves into a Water type, making it easier for Pikachu to deal with. If you win once Eevee evolves into a Fire type, which only take regular damage from Pikachu electric attacks.
But if you win twice Pikachu now has to deal with a Pokemon that im assuming electric attacks on Jolteon is ineffective.
Want to know two other weird things about gen 1 Pokemon games? A helpful tip is that you can change your moveset around though unlike in later games you can only do such in battle. Hover a move, hit select then go to another move and hit select again iirc. Another thing but completely useless for speedrunning is that most people believe gen 1 is the only Pokemon game where Oak doesn't give you free pokeballs but that would be incorrect. He does but only after the 2nd rival battle and even then only if you never evolve or catch another pokemon up to that point and never pay for your own pokeballs. If successful with the conditions and you talk to him he will give you 5 pokeballs with a dialog box that includes an error which show up even in Yellow I believe. Guess even the testers were unaware of it.
Bruh his name is Blue
Not before gen 3 and abilities. Gens 1 and 2 its just not very effecrive. Theres also the fact he could have 1 if his other 2 abilities.
@@RedPandaTables you could change move order in battle in gen 2 & 3 too
Let's not forget Ash beat Sabrina as his fourth badge gym, not Erika... Shouldn't that be part of the requirements?
Keeping the battle order could cause some weird problems...
I'm talking out of my memory and it is quite bad, but as an exemple... Ash would need to do the Lavander Town part first, then Sabrina and Sylph Co. last. What is actually possible with glitches to scape the Marrowak fight but the category doesnt let you use glitches.
Adding the "battles in order" and some other restrictions (like using the exact pokemon used), but forgiving glitches made to catch the impossible mons could be funny.
@@albertonishiyama1980
Isn't it technically to challenge Sabrina, lose, then catch a Haunter in Lavender Tower to beat Sabrina with it?
I'm imagining the worst pain possible. Running into the Viridian grass, only to hit the 1% Pidgeotto BEFORE the 55% Caterpie, and having to ignore it.
Top tip: If you try to give Pikachu a Potion when its HP is full, its happiness will still increase. You can do this over and over with the same Potion to get Bulbasaur quickly.
At the start I was like "wait... you have to catch all those Tauros in the Safari zone without glitches?". This speedrun must be a true test of patience.
Bye butterfree, I will forever remember your confusion spam.
This just seems like setting yourself up for a painful speedrun. Also, I always find it funny that Ash's Noctowl was a shiny and the first shiny I came across (excluding the Gyarados encounter because it's static) was a Noctowl and thought my game was glitched because I didn't realize what a shiny Pokemon was.
Seriously, I think that anyone trying to replicate Ash's journey in a real game is as insane as Kefka. XD
I dunno, Kefka has more productive things to do with his time. You don't become a god by pointlessly torturing yourself.
@@Zarvanis Unless you're the God of Torture, at least...
Kefka is still more insane, hes just smart insane.
I wonder if there's categories for ALL of ash's journeys. Some rules might have to be fudged for the pikachu rule, but it might be a neat concept
This is the most hilarious speedrun category ever
4:51 An easy way to max out Pikachu's happiness is attempting to use a Potion on it while it's at max HP. The game will tell you that it has no effect, and it won't consume the Potion, but Pikachu's happiness will go up. You can pretty easily max out its happiness this way. If Pikachu's happiness isn't high enough when speedrunners get to this point in the game, this could be an easy way to get Pikachu's happiness high enough to get Bulbasaur.
I actually attempted a run in Yellow very similar to this with friends on a modded Wii back in 2011-2012, but I believe we stopped around gym 4 and that save is long gone.
I was recently considering doing this again, only to find this video did it perfectly. Glad someone else had the same idea, bravo!
If there was an Alola Ash Percent would be worse because first you need a rockruff that has its special hidden ability THEN you a to get Maltan that you evolve into Melmetal in game (an impossibility to do without hacking)
I think shiny odds are better
Huge mistake in the entire category ash beat magmar with Charizard
I can't tell if this is sarcasm since he doesn't have a Magmar in game 😂
I used to use his team in Pokémon yellow bc my siblings told me the game would crash if I didn’t lmao
That's just evil LOL
Peak sibling moment
Great video. I loved every second of it!
You've seen no more than 2 minutes of video
I've done this challenge. Not as a Speedrun, though.
It was fun.
It was fun to catch 29 tauros!?
Yeah I used to do this as a kid too, no Tauros though lol
I would straight up cheat the Tauros thing. Doing it for an audience is one thing but playing a joke on myself isn't funny when no one is laughing.
00:25 im waiting for the rule "pikachu has to beat brock's onyx with thundershock" to be a thing
Ash’s first canonical interaction with Giovanni would be in Unova, making the run invalid after the Celadon City Rocket Hideout
"using pikachu without experiencing pain"? that's an auto fail for me. i'll stick to getting a volt absorb lanturn in kaizo. that seems like it'll hurt less. which says a hell of a lot.
Tbf va lanturn is actually pretty common and in lockes common enough it was an expected thing.
I'm not surprised. Playing as if you're Ash just means you never win anything legitimetly.
3:30 omg, the yourney of buterfree was so emotional. Such a good story arc.
6:20 so emotional
I just knew from reading the title that catching the 29 Tauros was the run killer.
Wait, Gary's eeveelution depends on whether you win lose or fight again? I honestly never knew that, after all these years. That's awesome!
Having to get a shiny for a speedrun sounds cool but insanely tough
The category should require you to overlevel Charmeleon/Charizard so he won't listen to you for half the game
Disobedience only happens with overleveled traded Pokemon! Charmander gets your own TID
@@PulseEffects Oh interesting I totally thought it was just based on level. That makes sense though
For the actual fun of it, would be better to just catch a mankey and evolve immediately so that you can over level charizard so that he doesn’t listen. Having 6 badges, you never get the real headache
As far as I can remember (it was when the games were new), when I originally got Pokemon Red, Tauros was the only one I was missing... I spent about 20 hours running around the Safari Zone and saw about 5 in total... And all of them ran away. Trying to get a Tauros was probably what made me decide not to play future pokemon games...
I always thought Ash’s Pokémon choices were either unfair (because he gets nearly every starter in each generation) or dumb (because of all the water types in generation 1, he chose Krabby).
Seeing it as a speed run shows a new perspective.
I did not expect 'make Red LARP as Ash' to be an entire category of competitive gameplay. But hey, how else are we supposed to kill time
somehow the thing that did the most mental damage to me in this video is gust being normal type. why. how. gen 1 is a magical place how did anyone figure out the type chart
What if I told you Karate Chop was also a Normal Type move in Gen 1. 👁
Bite was also normal
"Now that we have our starter pokemon" 1:25
(throw's pikachu into the ether)
7:35 And also that gun-crazy old lady in the Tentacruel episode.😉
Idk about other countries but the safari episode even aired in Greece as well. We even had that episode on Blue Ray xDD
What the Hell(as)?
Even when I was a little kid watching the cartoons I was infinitely annoyed at how garbage Ash was as a Pokemon trainer... I can't even begin to imagine the pain of trying to do this meme-run.
I wonder which of all of Ash's journeys would actually be the WORST to speedrun.
Not saying it can't be Johto, but Ash certainly committed innumerable Pokésins.
Fun Fact: If your pikachu isn't happy by the time you reach bulbasaur, you can just keep trying to give pikachu a potion while it's at full health over and over and it will raise its happiness.
Dang, Ash really did rely a lot on dumb luck didn't he?
Oh yeah, catching 29 Tauros.
At least Ashes next BBQ's are delicious.
the tauros episode was aired in brazil and was pretty popular
"On top of keeping Pikachu in your party the entire game." That's not really a difficult task. I allways had Pikachu in my party even postgame. 😄
Well Pikachu in this one is kinda ass whereas the remakes at least maxes their stats to be somewhat competitive
@@DrakeKnight99 Still, for being so weak Pikachu isn't completely useless. Type effectiveness goes a long way and limiting Pikachu's must win encounters to just water+flying is plenty manageable.
In lets go games. You can get the starters in the wild
7:35 - Don't forget the machine guns, rocket launcher, and TANK Nastina uses against the giant Tentacruel while in Porta Vista in season 1!
Imagine trying the Johto Ash% and finding a shiny that isn't Noctowl.
6:17 "Besides krabbing Grabby."🤣
It's ironic that the safari zone episode only aired in Japan
The real Ash speedrun is when you don't use the bike past Viridian City
0:55 Pokemon Yellow is probably the best fit for this kind of challenge, because that version is loosely based on the Pokemon: Indigo League anime, and because you have Pikachu with you from the beginning.😉
when i saw shen in the beginning the title suddenly made so much more sense
Me: “this doesn’t seem so bad”
Me 8 minutes later: “oh no… no no no”
Mind you most of the other runs aren't even possible.
For generation 2, 4, 5 and 7 Ash gets multiple starters. For generation 6 he should be using Ash-Greninja, which is not available until gen 7 and similarly he uses Meltan in Gen 7, which is not available in USUM games.
Leaving Gen 1. Orange Islands (assuming you use Sevis), Gen 3 and gen 8 the only generations that can be legally finished.
But even then - gen 8 you need to use your original Yellow file and use Pokemon Home to get back Pidgeot at the end of your Journeys.
I do think though - if you ever actually attempt gen 7 or gen 8, with some changes (like the whole Raticate or Haunter ordeals). They would probably be the most fun. Especially gen 8 makes you go to all the areas around the Galar region.
Usually challenge runs that require you to use specific pokemon usually allow cheats and trading to obtain the pokemon that would otherwise be impossible to obtain
So I imagine the regions where Ash gets multiple starters would allow to transfer them in so long as the it is Ash
The reason they allowed the rocket launchers in squirtle squad episode because getting a rocket launcher is fairly unrealistic compared to getting a 6 shot revolver. I don't know the full law behind it but that is likely the reason why we didn't get that episode.
That doesn't explain the assault rifles
Ash's way of playing Pokemon is IRRELEVANT.
After getting pikachu, spam using the first potion from your pc while its at full health. After a bunch of uses its happiness goes up. You can max happiness before leaving town 1.
I feel like the problem with this speed run is that it's mostly RNG dependent. If you get luckier on your Tauros throws and manage that section in 2 hours instead of 3, there's barely anything another speedrunner could do to make up for that lost hour. Knowing my luck, I'd probably get stuck on the Pidgeoto step for 3 hours.
I played through the whole game, not knowing you can get Bulbasaur and Charmander as a kid. I just get through all the text boxes I didn’t pay attention.
Nice video! All those Tauros sound like Hell to catch, but somehow I am Tempted...
Also 6:50 'Walking With You' from the Xenoblade chronicles 2 playlist spotted!
Whoever thought up of an Ash Ketchum speed-run must be pretty evil. Going through the majority of your game with only 1 fully evolved Pokemon then releasing it is pretty evil
For #3. Just have a friend trade you the Raticate at the beginning of st. Anne and then have him trade you back at the end of st. Anne.
I feel like you should have to the Gyms in Ashs order too, skipping Erika and Koga until you beat Sabrina first.
It can get worse: ASH FULL STORY. where you need to complete ash his entire journey.
Including the battlefrontier saga. where you have to use 5 moves with snorlax.
Forget that, imagine if all Pokémon Ash caught and released were Shiny? You imagine THAT pain?
the safari zone episode was absolutely aired in australia
I loved watching Shen doing these runs as a meme
7:21 -USA: gun in a kids animation ❌
-USA: minimum age for owner a rifle ❌
> Use Pikachu without experiencing Pain
I mean, Ash didn't manage that either. Guy got electrocuted pretty often.
The moment I saw Shen I was like "oh yes....the Tauros run"
Just a reminder you also have to lose every champion for at least 25 years
I use to do something similar when I played Pokémon games, which is why it always bugged me when Ash had more than 1 starter Pokémon in a certain anime arc or how the writers rarely made his Pokémon evolve or let him catch more then 5 new Pokémon at a time.
I did a somewhat similar challenge one time, in Sun and Moon, where my team was Pikachu, Vulpix, Tsareena, Turtonator, Togedemaru and Primarina. Those sound familiar? They're the main partner Pokémon of the main cast of the SM anime. It was a decently tough challenge, though the hardest part was finding a FUCKING PIKACHU.
I kid you not, I found and caught a literal shiny Grubbin before I managed to encounter a wild Pikachu.
The fact that the pikachu just walks on two legs in yellow is so infinitely funny to me
i had no idea that was how blue’s eeveelution was picked
Pulse, is there an Ash% for LGP?
Yes! It's called Bootleg Ash% 😂
@@PulseEffects Lmaooo Bootleg Ash
@@alexanderdejesus4986 So called because progression requirements and Pokemon availability changes make a 1:1 recreation of Ash's journey impossible (you can't catch Pidgeotto in Forest, you have to catch Oddish to progress, you still need 50 species caught to finish the game, etc.).
I feel like using long range trainer glitch would make getting primeape easier and should be allowed, but ditto can't be found until cinnabar in yellow so idk if any available trainers can give it earlier anyway.
This really puts into perspective how bad Ash was at his job...
3:48 - Yeah...no. Yes. Yes? Maybe... mostly no though. So, first off, that scene from Ultra Adventures is a meme that's gone too far. Ash getting Brock and Misty's badges "out of pity" isn't what actually happened. Anyway, here's the thing about those two. Ash won the Boulder Badge legitimately, just with a completely off-the-wall strategy that not only is impossible in the games, but isn't even mechanically a thing until type-changing moves like Soak were introduced. As for the Cascade Badge, that was technically given to him in a nonstandard way but it's because the match was unfairly interrupted. Had Jessie, James and Meowth not attacked Cerulean City Gym at the time, Ash would have won that battle, he already had a clear advantage by then. The two badges that Ash really didn't win were and had just been given were the Rainbow Badge and Marsh Badge - the Rainbow Badge was given to him for saving Celadon City Gym and the Marsh Badge was given to him because he won by default after the wild haunter he had befriended managed to incapacitate Sabrina with laughter, curing her psychosis in the process. However, people seem to look at those two specific gyms and automatically assume that Ash just bullshitted his entire way through the league. Which... he, well, did do, but in a completely different way - by using strategies that don't even logically make sense and somehow making them work.
This is just how I played Yellow as a kid.
the speedrun that makes the LGPE professor oak challenge look engaging and easy-going.
3:13 Well, technically no one in the Pokemon universe really "dies", because it's a fictional world where the animated personalities are indestructible.🤔
I've never had a happy enough pikachu to get bulba when arriving in cerulean for the first time WHAT
gary was one of pokemons most forgotten charecters by the anime directors
Must resist naming your rival anything other than Gary. I can see why this speed run would be a pain.
