@DrPsychedelic He did? That would be nice to hear more of - as I recall Lynard Skynard and Mr. Young were not always best friends... ("Well I hope Neil Young will remember / A southern man don't need him around")
@@Jonas013 yep. The listener is left to theorize about who was coming after the narrator. People just going about life when war happens. Could mean civil war given the song name. Could be either north or south. Bad stuff was happening on both sides for people who just wanted to be left alone. Haunting song. Always brings tears for this 66 year old guy. But yeah, as the story goes, it was to have been on a Skynyrd album but Ronnie died in the plane crash (per Wikipedia),
Powderfinger ... One of the best lyrical narratives ever written in the history of songwriting. Neil Young and Leonard Cohen are divine masters of their craft. What a pleasure it is to be gifted with such incredible art and music. Thanks Neil.
I took a Greyhound to Charlotte to see Neil and the Horse for the Freedom tour when I was a young man of 17 years. I wouldn't trade those minutes for any amount of money. Some things are priceless

After listening to him for thirty five years I finally got to see him in concert what made it even better was my wife and daughter were with me. Just wish my brother would've gotten to be there rip.
Damn, that's one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I'm old, must've listened to it a couple hundred times down over the years and it always moves me. I think it's one of Neil's best, though I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. Thanks for the upload, this is a great performance of it.
I really love this song for so many reasons; the main being it is king in putting you THERE. You can look around and see the mountains, trees... and the boat... I am transported completely each time. I'll never forget hangin' on the stage, right in front of Neil, while he & Crazy Horse blasted this out at the Cow Palace, Daly City, sometime in the early '90s.
I discovered this song back in 1995 when I was 21. At that time, my father was dying of cancer. I took a lot of comfort in listening to this song then and I still do now.
The day this musical genius passes on will be a very sad day. VERY SAD. Thank you Neil Young, for all your work over the last few decades. Keep on rockin' in the free world. ( and the next...)
Seriously, Live Rust hit me on 8 track in 1980 and changed my life forever. I love Neil. I took my daughter to a concert in 2014 and she enjoyed it. She may have been the youngest person there.
@@drberube1963 I also took my daughter to see Neil and Crazy Horse in 2012 in Toronto. She was 24 so I am guessing your daughter was younger. I knew this song was on the play list and I really wanted to see it live but she wanted to see Helpless, which was a potential encore. They played them both. So glad you and your daughter share the same experience we did. And 7 years later our father daughter dance at her wedding was "Here for You".
one artist who sends the chills up my spine, what control on his harmonics, the guy always wants to reinvent and sometimes it is hit and miss, but a prolific songwriterand well respected by most musicians. seen Neil probly 6-8 times and always have liked his different approach, like the shocking pinks show was a great rockabilly, I liked thr transformer period as well, the old stuff rules. 90's albums ragged glory, broken arrow and mirror ball rocked hard some of my faves love his acoustic songs
Most beautiful solo I've ever heard played on guitar. One of my top 3 musical influences as a guitarist of All Time along with Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour. Always playing what they feel instead of what's popular. That kind of playing is just what Musical Freedom means to me!
I used to be a drummer in a band that was put together 1983, lasting about eighteen years (without any changes in the personnel). Our setlist during those years of course evolved as the amount of our own material grew - but there was always a core of cover songs we played. Two of those were Neil's: Powderfinger and Like A Hurricane. And they were always a real, real pleasure to play.
One of the all time rockers, great lyricist beyond words, plus playing with the great Booker T and MG's on this cut. What more can you ask for. Doing it for over 50 years, unbelieveable
I was listening to a very early version of this song on here, but am having trouble finding it now, Neil looked like he was 20 yo. My first & only album for along time was after the Gold Rush, I was about 13 & would listen to it over & over at night on my real crummy little record player. I love NEIL & still do finally got to see him live at a benefit concert he did at Cuesta College in their old gym near San Luis Obispo, CA, 4 the Red Wing Indians. There was only like 40 people there & I was about 15 & sat on floor near where Neil was standing, I was 15 yo & too shy to say anything to him but wanted to take him & show him my awesome county after the show was over...I think he was w his first wife so I probably would have had to take her along too...not what i had in mind 4 us. The Indians performed first & then Neil, they were both awesome & with so few people there it was once in a lifetime experiance. The next time I saw him was in Santa Barbara CA at their University & it was crazy with many students & including motercycle guys ( hells angels ? ) who were being assholes, people there were passing around cheap jugs of wine laced with LSD, luckily 4 me I didnt drink any as again I was not very old & would later learn the hard way I hate LSD & think its scary evil drug. Neil was with CSN&Y & of coarse they were awesome. Still have a raging crush & got all his albums really love Powder Finger & Rainbow Tepee, Cin Girl. I'm still here in SLO County & or Monterey County Ca, still madly in love w Neil whom I believe married another movie actress & left CA & moved back to his hometown in Canada. I hate Trump as much as Neil does but I am American so I must stay here & fight 4 our Country & the Planet here. Neil pls do not give animal ag any mo money, they r destroying the planet & r the main cause of Climate Crisis, corruption, & ecocide to CA & OUR PLANET. If u all want to support vital change support those who grow VEGANIC or at least ORGANIC FRUITS, NUTS , VEGTABLES, SEE; drawdown.org & climatehealers.org/the-science/animal-agriculture-position-paper/ & www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000008091680/climate-sustainability-agriculture-lobby.html
The Democratic party & mainstream leftists supported or coddled marxists...as sort of useful idiots to them , or to the party --- they fostered this culture. But now ? --- The idiots are more or less running the asylum
I am in the house band (bass player) and the gentle man that leads us is always springing great new songs on us so after averse i caught the chords by the time the song was over i was in tears and i cursed him out for it. I was embaresed . Music is so powerful .
One of my all-time favorites from Neil Young. I wish I had been there for this concert. My older brother turned me on to this album and I loved the sound and it marked the end of my wasting time in disco clubs (it was the women and not the music that had me there). I love the fact that Neil has always been about the music and re-inventing his sound and experimenting. To me, that's what an artist does...experiments, pushes convention, and constantly changes. As an artist, he's in my top 10.
+Brian Himes I have to admit, Live Rust is one of his best, I still have an old VHS tape that has the whole concert where Billy goes insane and destroys a bass guitar, and neil pretty much breaks all his guitars strings. Good times.
The same, tho’ 15 in my case. Eminently ass-kicking but tinged with such tenderness and mournfulness is what killed me; still gives me the chills and makes my eyes moist.
saw Neil last summer in Lincoln, NE it was our 25th wedding anniversary. the tickets were a gift from 2 of my sister in laws. almost made me cry when they gave them to us. I've wanted to see Neil since 1972. what a show.
I love Neil Young because he played what he wanted to play, not what the record labels told him to, and they did indeed try to control him if you know his story. Some of his oddball albums I did not like, others I loved, but I respect this fellow musician for his integrity to play his music. Now, if you've read this far, let me share that Neil is known for not always having the most well tuned guitar, as some of his recordings will testify. At the beginning of this video, Neil tunes his obviously out of tune guitar, which was used on the previous song too. So when he tunes his guitar, by ear mind you, he gets it close enough and says "Perfect!" and his band mate laughs knowing the backstory.
If you havent read his autbiography, check it out, very interesting I love Neil Young, my sister actually turned me on to him, she has almost all his many albums. He is very versatile, and you are right about him playing what he wants. That is one of the things I love about him. Rock on Neil!!!
I feel if you have any problem with Neil Young's voice, his presence on stage, how he 'plucks' as one dip put it, then move on nobody cares if you don't get it! You are limited and thats ok! I don't hate any music genera i love Alice in chains, Cypress hill, Tom Jones, GeorgeJones, Al Green, just to name a few Neil Young is a phenomenon that without him so many artist would have had a lot less comfort in their talent being reviled. he really is the song writers example to give my generation and the others a voice with individual style, realness and good for the soul rock and roll! and of course powder finger is my fave but dang what a long list it is of close runner ups! Neil Young songs) hope this is not coming off like a rant! should i post or not? that is the ? WHATEVER!
+paulette colvert You're right. If it weren't for artists trying to be different and creative, we wouldn't have the Beatles, Elvis, Stones, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Doors, Bowie, etc. etc. etc. We'd have only auto-tuned bland noise to please the masses, unfortunately the norm in rock/pop today.
+paulette colvert When I was younger, bk in the day after I got of the Army had this cassette when it 1st came out i used to blast it until evy1 knew who Neil Young was/is & what that album was about. So many stories evy1 love it after that.
+paulette colvert you are right. if Neil came out after MTV he would have never got a shot. But he is pure rock and roll and never caved to the money despite other's pleas.
This ultimately is ONE of My favorite Neil songs. so much meaning, the music, everything about it. Plus of couseNeil and band singing it. I too, am an old die hard fan of Him, never get tired of hearing any of His music.
It's easy not to think of Neil Young, just a hippie playing what he felt. He never searched out the limelight, it found him. But you must admit, what music this hippie can play.
I've heard that same thing that Neil Young can't sing, but I have been listening to him for nearly 50yrs and he still has it all together. Keep on going Neil.

The day this musical genius passes on will be a very sad day. VERY SAD.
Thank you Neil Young, for all your work over the last few decades.
Keep on rockin' in the free world. ( and the next...)
What a performance. Best live version of Powderfinger in my view.
The two back up singers make it all worth while.in Neil's words "beautiful "
Seriously, Live Rust hit me on 8 track in 1980 and changed my life forever. I love Neil. I took my daughter to a concert in 2014 and she enjoyed it. She may have been the youngest person there.
Haha, just saw my comment from years ago
@@drberube1963 I also took my daughter to see Neil and Crazy Horse in 2012 in Toronto. She was 24 so I am guessing your daughter was younger. I knew this song was on the play list and I really wanted to see it live but she wanted to see Helpless, which was a potential encore. They played them both. So glad you and your daughter share the same experience we did. And 7 years later our father daughter dance at her wedding was "Here for You".
I took my younger brothers 12 speed 40 miles to see him in concert.
💖
And worth every mile!
His greatest song . All time classic ,.Superb .
Incredible rendition of this. Nothing like Neil live.
one artist who sends the chills up my spine, what control on his harmonics, the guy always wants to reinvent and sometimes it is hit and miss, but a prolific songwriterand well respected by most musicians. seen Neil probly 6-8 times and always have liked his different approach, like the shocking pinks show was a great rockabilly, I liked thr transformer period as well, the old stuff rules. 90's albums ragged glory, broken arrow and mirror ball rocked hard some of my faves love his acoustic songs
all his songs are good.................the man is a legend musically successful for decades...
Most beautiful solo I've ever heard played on guitar. One of my top 3 musical influences as a guitarist of All Time along with Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour. Always playing what they feel instead of what's popular. That kind of playing is just what Musical Freedom means to me!
TheNatureboy64 l also enjoy Mark Knoffler of Dire Straights. U have great taste.
The album version of the solo was brilliant! One of my favorites to this day. We covered this song in a band I was in back in 1980.
Beautiful solo ain't it? His shaky style but dear god so Soulful!!
That's one of the most beautiful guitar solos I too have ever heard. The man truely feels the music
He never gave a fuck...never will !!! God bless Neil Young and CRAZY HORSE !!!!!!
One of the best songs he ever wrote, among countless immortal songs he's come up with.
I have loved Neil Young for close to 50 years. I would probably faint if I ever met him. 😂
I’m honored to have the kind of love you show me. How are you today? It’s nice meeting you here btw
Honestly, what can you say, this man is phenomenal, just poetry.
Still one of my favourite Neil Young songs!
My absolute favorite Neil Young song 💕
A treasure!!!!!!
From the start till today❤❤❤❤
Whatever your standing or beliefs or politics or religion are in life, Neil will always give you an eargasm and a soulgasm. Cheers Shaky!!!
My FKN childhood. Saw him ,ACTUALLY won tickets,BUT GREW UP JAMMING ON HIS MUSIC.
Hey there! How are you today? It’s nice to meet you on here.
One of the all time rockers, great lyricist beyond words, plus playing with the great Booker T and MG's on this cut. What more can you ask for. Doing it for over 50 years, unbelieveable
40 years ago I saw Neil perform in a small open air venue in Philadelphia. Haven't been the same ever since.
🤘
A great song! Been listening to Neil Young for 50 years and am looking forward to more acoustic and electric jams that only Young can master! Thanks.
he is 75 now in 2021
I hope I live long enough to hear more from Neil: First heard him in my teens, now I'm 73 and always a fan of the great man from Canada!!!
Been my fav song since 1980
Hello, how are you today? It’s nice to meet you on here.
This song ranks right up there with Harvest Moon as my 2 favorite Neil songs. What a GREAT performance!
I can always tell the very second, it's Neil Young, oh and the memories these tunes bring, love everything about this man!!!!
!

Hello, how are you doing today? It’s nice to meet you on here.
I just have to close my eyes and what a vivid story Neil guides me through, Thank You Neil. 2021
I was a twelve-year old kid when I first heard this on Live Rust and fell in love with it. It's always been a real ass kicker!
+Brian Himes I have to admit, Live Rust is one of his best, I still have an old VHS tape that has the whole concert where Billy goes insane and destroys a bass guitar, and neil pretty much breaks all his guitars strings. Good times.
I remember going to the midnight madness at the movies so many times to see Live Rust when it first came out. Great times. great music.
I was older than 12 but Live Rust was the 1st time I heard this too along with my favorite song Hurricane
I was 16. I can say it changed my life. Ragged Glory was my adult favorite
The same, tho’ 15 in my case. Eminently ass-kicking but tinged with such tenderness and mournfulness is what killed me; still gives me the chills and makes my eyes moist.
THE ONE THE ONLY MR
NEIL YOUNG.GOD BLESS HIM FOR MORE THAN40.YEARS OF GREAT MUSIC.GOD BLESS
Neil always plays with a such emotion and genuine passion in each performance.
saw Neil last summer in Lincoln, NE it was our 25th wedding anniversary. the tickets were a gift from 2 of my sister in laws. almost made me cry when they gave them to us. I've wanted to see Neil since 1972. what a show.
My husband and I saw him live in Germany, my husband passed away a year ago. Think of him every time I here the beautiful distortion of his guitar
+David Phillips True on the guitar tuning, but in cold outdoor stadiums, metal strings do funny things, Neil Rocks
It's funny, when Neil's guitar is out of tune, he just bends the strings until it sounds about right "PERFECT"
+Larry Larsen it be what pro's no to do when not in a studio or prime conditions. RIGHT
Wallet Bailey True, and as Daniel noted, outdoor temperatures can wreak havoc on a guitar, especially cold temps.
If you havent read his autbiography, check it out, very interesting I love Neil Young, my sister actually turned me on to him, she has almost all his many albums. He is very versatile, and you are right about him playing what he wants. That is one of the things I love about him. Rock on Neil!!!
My eyes saw black and my face splashed in the sky, what a verse.
WHATEVER!
+paulette colvert You're an angel
+paulette colvert Right on. I read this after watching and listening, glad I did to save me reading the "pluck" or worse.
30 years today the young men and women in Tiananmen Square faced down their "White Boat". 10,000 died that day. Never forget their memory and courage.
I just turned 22 when this came out. Loved it.
this is THE SONG.
My God, what a classic! Thank you Neil for bringing musical greatness into this world.
This ultimately is ONE of My favorite Neil songs. so much meaning, the music, everything about it. Plus of couseNeil and band singing it. I too, am an old die hard fan of Him, never get tired of hearing any of His music.
Hello, how are you today? It’s nice to meet you on here.
no one manhandles a guitar like neil...always a treat to see him work
It's easy not to think of Neil Young, just a hippie playing what he felt. He never searched out the limelight, it found him. But you must admit, what music this hippie can play.
An excellent rendition of one of my favorite Neil Young songs. Backing vocals were right on time.
I've heard that same thing that Neil Young can't sing, but I have been listening to him for nearly 50yrs and he still has it all together. Keep on going Neil.
