People talk smack about "one string solos" but the simple fact is Neil Young can bring forth more emotion and feeling on one string than most players can with a full band.
After many years of hearing this song, I truly appreciate just how beautiful, haunting and touching it is. This has to be one of the best live songs ever.
Indeed it is an absolutely amazing song live, I was fortunate enough to see Neil in 81 at the University of Georgia Coliseum... A completely acoustic show, just Neil his guitar, harmonica and an old upright piano th truly haunting tone... That is one of my top 5 concerts.
Me and an old friend of mine rocked hard to this whole movie several times on mushrooms and was some of the best times of my life as a teen. Not many got why 2 kids in the early 2000s kept watching rust never sleeps over and over. But its because the whole movie is a fucking masterpiece that will stand the test of time!! Rock on niel!!❤🎉
I get it!! I grew up with NY. I too rocked out on Shrooms and many other goodies, while listening to him work his magic. Saw this show in 1979 at Chicago Stadium when I was 19..... man, wish I could go back.
@@donnahidder3092 I was at that show in Chicago. I was twenty and thanks to youtube I go back and revisit all the time. But yeah it was a great time to be a young "adult" lol
Wow! Watching in 2024 - first time I’ve seen this performance despite buying this album back in ‘79. My all time NY song. Thanks for posting this video.
The first time I heard Neil play this was in 1976 at The Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. My other stand-out memory of that show was Neil sitting at an old upright piano for A Man Needs a Maid. Talk about haunting......
Saw this show at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. I was 15 (older sister took me). Learned what a "contact high" was for sure. "Cortez the Killer" runs 8 plus minutes with no vocals for the first two: Fans had patience; Neil and crew mesmerized us (and not just because we were stoned). We screamed for Harvest and After the Gold Rush, but Neil blew everyone away with cuts from his new album, Rust Never Sleeps. Little did we know how this artist would continue to evolve for decades to come (excuse the pun)!!!
Played this (actually the long live version 18 min) to my nephew when he was about 8 years when we were at our summer cottage at fall and he listened the song so calmly, hardly said anything. I was so pleased not to hear any complaint about the lenght of the song or anything:) And I still am.
> Learned what a "contact high" was for sure. Same! 2012, Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Golden Gate Park. I'd only arrived in the states the day before, after a 13 hour flight from Australia. I stood in the crowd, seeing various other bands (incl. Beck, Foo Fighters), and inching closer to the stage for a good 6-7 hours. Everywhere I looked, there was at least one person enjoying some left handed lettuce - here in Australia, the sniffer dogs would be on you before you've even left the train station. I was about 3-4 rows from the front when they finally came on after the sun had gone down, and it was everything I dreamed it would be. They played all the good shit, plus a few numbers from Psychedelic Pill. By the time I got back to my hostel that night, I'd made sloppy oral love to a burrito thicker than my arm, and was feeling suspiciously good - if not floaty as hell. Good times.
In 79 I was working in a factory in Trenton Ontario on the afternoon shift. I would get home to my apartment in Brighton well after midnight. I lived in the upper half of an old law building,it was beautiful and I could climb the tv antenna to get on the roof. I used to take my stereo and speakers up there and I would listen to this whole album drinking a cold beer. I was just 20 then.
That guitar solo is still one of the most legendary Every note from Neil Young is THE perfect note in that moment. Accept no substitute...because there simply isn't one. This man has more passion in his big toe nail than the rest can hope for in a lifetime.
Ole hippie who just never gets tired of the good shit. Musical genius. I can listen to anything he's ever done from CSNY to farm 🎉aide with Willie. Today's music! EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE !
After seeing him live several years ago and him at 67 ish , Neil rocked across and around the stage like a 20 yr. old while blowing the house away with masterful chording. I love Neil Young for decades now! HAH...DECADES!!
Neil’s bouncing back & forth & up and down while the whole band weaves their magic. Lightly plucking of the guitar strings - a heavenly sound. LOVE!! 💖
God father of both folk and grunge… How can this be ? I listened to Live Rust on cassette in the local woods around a keg somewhere in western Pennsylvania many years ago. Has it been 45 since I was a Senior in High School? I guess it has. I am enjoying the ride … thanks Neil. Thanks for your catalog that unlocks my journey through my past ✌🏼
I've seen Bowie,Alice Cooper,Pink Floyd,Genesis,Black Sabbath Radiohead,Neil (solo) Neil &Crazy Horse and Cortez The Killer is without doubt the best song ( the longer the better) I ain't arguing it's my opinion and that's that, the feel you get from them 4 guys playing it is pure and how music should feel somewhere deep inside,😎😍
One of the best live versions of this like one of its kind of out of this world masterpiece that Neil Young and Crazy H stung us with. Rust Never Sleeps, for sure, thank God. And thanks for posting. Helps me get through the day, as days go by. As it has for years and will until the end of time.
Madison Garden Shows: up in the nosebleed seats in 73 with the stray gators, too. Caught a smile From Billy as he got into a limo by himself. My parents drove me and returned from Jersey to pick me up . The Palladian, Carnegie Hall. Best in 88 at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. 200 people front centerstage table of 6. 5 ft away. First in line. Two nights, Everybody knows Neil live is a life altering event.
I was there. It was first time I saw Neil and The Horse. Needless to say I I've seen Neil Young and Crazy Horse many many times since then. Is there a rust never sleeps show is seared in my memory banks. Feels like just yesterday
Yeah these are some of the best guitar effects I've ever heard. Absolutely perfect. The studio version is pretty bad, but I've always been in love with this live version- just perfection.
First thing I learned at my first Neil Young concert: You don't know Cortez the Killer until you've heard it, live. Live, it just goes "next level". (-as most of Neil's songs do, in fact...)
Those who seen this concert you are one of the lucky individuals. Saw this in 79 at the walk in theater frying on acid they passed out 3D glasses to everybody. Love Neil and always will. Thank you Neil and the boys for all your telent. From southern California. 🇺🇸✌️
Neil Young's electric guitar of choice, known as "Old Black," is a 1953 Gibson Les Paul gold top that's been painted black and heavily modified with a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, Firebird bridge pickup and several other small tweaks.😅
Liliana's are really rock and roll man and he's a very special man and whoever doesn't know that while then you filled yourself because there's nothing that this man he's a true hippie he can really belt out the songs and the lyrics and he's really got it that mean it's in his blood
Once that George Harrison said he could not tolerate Neil’s style of lead guitar. True his style would get out there, choppy and screechy at times. But truly brilliant here. Neil and Em min or A min, a natural.
I had no idea that Neil and Crazy Horse rock it and sound as good now on the 2024 Love Earth tour as back then.. Beautiful awesome song, and hopefully Neil and the Horse play it in Bend upcoming in.July. Wonderful love it. Great video. Thanks wow ❤

Saw this on a cinema way back in '79. Afterwards bought the double cassette tape and CD in the 90s. Now watching it in 2021 brings back those youthful memories. My next milestone I'll be 60, and I've heard countless groups cover this song. First time for me seeing this video and I'm blown away. Music from an era of real soul. No fake generated auto tuning, voice overs, and cheap inorganic corporate shit music.

It's art, not high jumping....
Technical mastery is great, maybe essential even, but then what? There is only exploration into the within thereafter
With one note
I couldn't have said it better 😅
You damn right! I just love how intense Neil is.

Making me cry, like it did 40 years ago
I saw these guys playing Cortez the Killer @ Rio, one of my highlights moments! Unforgettable.
Nobody does this song as good as Young with Crazy Hourse. They project pure gut wrenching emotion that gives me chills.
Crazy Horse! He is brilliant.
Almost cinematic. Cortez and Powderfinger are such powerful songs.🇨🇦✌️
That's probably my two favorite NY songs, but it's hard to say, he's probably the only songewriter/singer that I can't think of one song I don't like.

It’s awful as a history lesson, but it’s fantastic as poetry. And the guitar playing is totally inspired
Yeah, the lyrics are more than a bit naive, but wonderfully evocative guitar playing as always.
